Shaking the Winter Doldrums With New Denim & Shoes

February 10, 2017 By kimwheeler 12 Comments

To me, this has been a dark beginning to the new year. With the election, the extreme weather -for us non-stop rain, and many days of darkness, I’m beyond ready for spring and some sunshine. I dragged myself out to shop a bit last week and bought some new Vince platform sneakers that are making everything look a little cooler and fresher. As much as I love my boots, I’m pretty sick of them by now. I don’t believe I’ve worn anything except boots since October!

I have Vans, but they tend to get beat pretty quick. I wanted something casual, but a little more mod and could be dressed up. I wandered into the Vince at Stanford with my friend Jeanne and she showed me these new Wallace slide-ons she bought. I love the little platform on them yet they feel like sneakers.

As the Vince platforms sneakers were so comfy, I found a similar pair by Steve Madden in black, also cute and comfy and costs quite a bit less. Now I have both. I also splurged on this amazing sweater from All Saints. It’s like butter. Super soft wool and thick and feels wonderful on. I also bought a long t-shirt dress there to wear with these sneakers as the weather warms. I am loving their quality and beautiful collectable pieces.

I try to add at least one good sweater a year to my rotation and remove one. This one is very me- oversized and I know I will wear it a million times.

Sorry for the lame kitchen photo, but with the weather this was about the only decent place to snap a picture. So here you have it..Me in me habitat, this is my California girl uniform pretty much daily in the winter! This sweater by AllSaints is my favorite thing I bought this year and will hopefully last me many seasons. It’s super soft and thick.

There are a lot of cute ways to style these. many found on my Pinterest like below. I’m looking forward to wearing both of them with casual t-shirt dresses and skirts come spring as well as my new fringed jeans now.

My fringed jeans (worn above), were another a winter addition to the wardrobe. McGuire is my new favorite jeans. I found mine at Anthropologie. At the checkout all the girls were telling me how fantastic this brand is. I had no idea! Now I’m on the hunt for another pair. They are amazingly comfortable and best of all…do not stretch out much. That’s a big problem with a lot of jeans. Look for ones with more cotton, less polyester.

This is the pair I got. No longer carried at Anthropologie, but I found them at Shopbop. Anthro has another pair of McGuire on sale now though these Gainsbourg cropped version I have my eye on.

Something about new denim styles jeans and sneakers inject a little fresh in the winter wardrobe and are two things that can easily transition into warmer weather.. Here’s to warmer days ahead!

Have a good weekend!

Kim

While we are talking about these jagged hems- check out my friend Dawn’s blog-  Fashion Should Be Fun. On this post she tells you how to do this with jeans you already have and a steak knife! Why not? Love this idea to update something you already own!

I absolutely love every look in this post! Love those adorable Vince and Steve Madden sneakers. Just a bit more dressed up than a plain pair of sneakers and they elevate every outfit. I have a pair of Steve Madden's that I wear all the time. I think I need that Vince pair! And those jeans……I want a pair of those too! I love how designers are playing with the hems and coming out with something fresh every season! You are so right… the rain needs to stop! I'm seriously ready for some sunshine and I appreciate every sunny day we get now! April xo

Thanks so much Kathy! They are true to size I think as they don't stretch. I wear 27 and they are slightly loose which I like, but don't get saggy. Have a good weekend! xo

Aww thanks so much for sharing my post, Dear! You look super casual chic and on point! Perfection! And yes, January is always a tough month for me anyway. Post-holiday blues, gloomy weather, the death anniversaries of both mom and dad …. I'm glad for February and a vacay coming up!

Kim you wear jeans and a sweater so well you California Girl! I love it. Those shoes looks so stylish yet comfy, perfect.
Sorry to hear you've been having the hideous grey weather, ugh same! We've hardly seen the sun the last six weeks I'm going bonkers. I'm taking vitamin D twice a day and forcing my family to take it too. We're headed in South Carolina soon and I am literally counting the days!
Fun post, thank you, and I hope you and your boys are well. xx

Loving the whole outfit Kim, especially the dark sneakers which are so much better for winter (especially with all the rain CA is having). I'm really looking forward to Spring too so I'm with you there! 🙂 I'm a big fan of your kitchen too so thanks for posting. Not lame at all! And I probably shouldn't admit this, but I didn't know the word 'doldrum' so I learned a new noun today thanks to your title. hehe!

My blog is about an easy Valentine or Galentine‘s dinner you can recreate. I tried to make this super simple because the whole point is gathering with your people and having a good time.

I did make ahead dishes and used pink items already in my home for the table. I added primroses from the hardware store for extra prettiness and for take home favors. 💕

The weekend post is up with chat about the trendin The weekend post is up with chat about the trending colors for 2023 in home decor and fashion.. Did you love the 80’s? If so this is perhaps a more sophisticated version with sherbet tones and bits of magenta, greens and navy. Here I added a bit of these Easter tones to the coffee table with a grass cloth box, one of my books and a candle. I think the best way to update things is to add touches to the home and closet that appeal to you and mix them in with neutrals..
What do you think of these colors? I think they’re fun. Some clothing pieces bring me back to my Esprit loving days. It could be fun to add a shirt, shoe or bag in these tones and I selected a handful to consider..

Also on the blog, a few good white jeans, skin cleansers you may need and more!

A January PSA- get in your closet and get those wh A January PSA- get in your closet and get those white jeans out! I found mine at the bottom of my closet today in a basket and thought -yes! I love the look of a classic white jean, paired with a chunky sweater or turtleneck in black, beige, tan, creams- neutral colors always look fantastic. Today it was warm enough that I could go sockless and wear my Madewell loafers with them and a little jacket I have from Anthro. Get your white jeans out. it will give your winter wardrobe have a little kick. White jeans can be worn all year and they even look great with winter boots and coats.

This is also a great time to look at your white Jean inventory. 🤍If you don’t have a pair that’s comfortable and straight leg, in a thicker material…this might be a good time to look. I’ll share some on the weekend blog as well.

Sunday beach trip… We made it to Santa Cruz to c Sunday beach trip… We made it to Santa Cruz to check out the coast after these rough last weeks. Aptos looks pretty good and poor Seacliff is terribly battered. So sad to see what people have lost. My heart goes out to them.

We had the beach to ourselves and the weather was winter perfect. ☀️Cold and sunny. We had a picnic of sandwiches from Zoccolis deli and took in the sun and sea air while watching surfers and birds.

This song just seemed to fit -and relatable as I could not sleep last night! No idea why. Isn’t it maddening?

Hope you get a chance to take a winter beach walk.. They are the best.

I have to share a snippet of just some of the wisd I have to share a snippet of just some of the wisdom that was Martin Luther King. He will always be one of my biggest heroes and ten years ago I wrote a small post highlighting some of his very meaningful words and quotes that we could all use as a life guide. Link to the post in my bio and more on my stories.

Do you know he is the only American to have a holiday for him that hasn’t been a president? He also had a low approval rating when he died. That has changed. Now people around the world use his teachings of living in peace and the fight for justice as a model we can strive for. I find his words so very needed in a world that is polarized more than ever. ❤️
