This year’s Golden Globe show was the best one I have seen and no red carpet was needed. The women took charge of this ship and you could feel them steer it with their messages in many ways tonight. The sexual harassment, discrimination and abuse women have endured in Hollywood, and elsewhere got addressed and it felt good. Speeches empowering women and girls, thanking the women who have inspired them personally, some by characters they play, were uplifting. Comments like Natalie Portman’s remark presenting the best director award, ‘All male nominees,’ she powerfully interjected, felt right and about time. Oprah got the Cecil B. DeMille award and brought the house down with an inspiring speech that got everyone fired up. Barbara Streisand capped it all it by calling out the fact that she is the only women to have ever won the director award and that was 34 years ago! How have we not had more women getting this award in the meantime?

Natalie Portman, America Ferrera, Emma Stone and Billie Jean King, whom Stone played in The Battle of the Sexes film.
I can’t help feeling this is a great beginning to what will be a better things. Also, how unimportant do the clothes on the Red Carpet seem right now? I LOVED that everyone wore black. It really brought the focus on the performances and the work didn’t it? It was not about what they wore on the red carpet.
Maybe the red carpet thing has been part of the problem all along. These shows have women out there vying to be rated on their appearance. It seems ridiculous, as if being nominated for work wasn’t enough, they must look fabulous too. However if everyone wears black, almost like men wear tuxes, the emphasis stays on the work and the performers! This isn’t a fashion show, but it sort of became one. We need an environment where even celebrity women are not all about appearances and tonight’s effort by the women was a huge step forward for this. How smart and chic everyone looked in their plain back, less makeup, little or no jewelry and more natural looks. Could this be the future? These celebrities can lead the way for us to also care less about appearances, something that women are made to place far too much importance on.
I’m feeling excited tonight that the world is going to change in a lot of ways this year and beyond for women and we may actually be the largest architects of this. Hopefully that will come by not what we wear and look like, but rather what we do.
Hi Kim, I really enjoyed the awards too, and I am now rooting for Oprah to throw her hat into the field in 2020 (even though I don’t have a vote)!! I agree that the black looked great – and still so many different looks. However, here’s another perspective from Lainey Lui, a Canadian who writes an excellent gossip and entertainment blog – I think you might enjoy the blog in general, she now has several different voices writing for the blog and they are often very thoughtful and insightful.

Hi Patricia, Thank you so much I will click over and check it out. I would love to see Oprah run. Clearly she succeeds at all she does. I’m ready for more women to be world leaders. I’d like to see the state of the world with women running the show.
By the way, Kim, Lainey is also on the panel of a daytime lifestyle show in Canada called The Social. Usually they have different segments but today’s show was a ‘postmortem’ of the Golden Globes. Some good discussion about the issues as well as the fashion. If you’re interested you’ll find the link to today’s episode on the home page here:: https://www.thesocial.ca/
Thanks!!

Elizabeth, I didn’t even think about the president. Funny she wore red. Agree with the Italian! She should be president and I do hope she is seriously considering. There is nothing she cannot do well. Oprah and Barbara made the show and great to have strong women speaking out. Proud of everyone last night!
Oprah has done so many things to perfection…She has inspired us to be our authentic selves, to be grateful, to live out lives to the best of our abilities no matter what hand we are dealt…I see Oprah bringing us together as a country, giving us what we cannot find for ourselves, a united states….a we the people democracy…I see this as her crowning achievement and the one she will be revered for in history…I believe she can run for president, win and heal our battered and scarred democratic (not party)
souls…I pray this is not my imagination taking a spin in the universe…DIANNE
Oprah has a great way of bringing us together and that is what we need for our country. Who doesn’t love her? I am with you Dianne, hoping this could actually happen. We need a strong leader and Oprah is damn smart and works hard, succeeds at all she does. God help us in our current state…
AMEN…..

Great post, Kim! I hadn’t thought about it but I’m thinking they need to do away with the red carpet. You are spot on about that! Too much emphasis on appearance and so much pressure for the ladies. Although I am missing your commentary about the dresses. 😉 Oprah’s speech was so good and so incredibly inspirational. I sure hope she runs in 2020!! April xo
April agree. As much as I love fashion, I think this show should be about the work and honoring the people! Yay for Oprah. xo
I don’t often enjoy the red carpet thing at awards shows, it’s funny because I’ll plan to watch it and then it’s so disappointing. All I can think about is how those women have probably not eaten in days in order to look slim on the carpet, aargh so yucky. This show was a breath of fresh air and I think you’re right, the women all in black were equal to the men in their no-fail tuxedos! I’m kind of hoping the black trend will continue.
Oprah is amazing and inspiring and a healer, if she doesn’t run I hope she at least has her hand in choosing the next candidate for the Democrats. I think she knows what America needs, and she’s not afraid to tell them either.
Dani it was great to see everyone focusing on the films and shows and the acting. The clothes were secondary and maybe that is better! Oprah would be good to be part of the process at least if she won’t run. Love to see her influence as everyone seems to like her and look up to her good advice about life. I love that she’s straight up! Thanks for your comments!! Loving your blog lately Dani! xo
