Fall Beauty Favorites

October 29, 2019 By kimwheeler 5 Comments

I spent the first part of my working years, during college and after, as a beauty consultant at Nordstrom and later doing freelance makeup. I’m still a huge beauty junkie and love to keep up with what is new so I was excited to get to a beauty event at Neiman Marcus in Palo Alto with my friend Jeanne and a other gals a few weeks ago where I learned a new tricks and tried out some very cool products!

Once a year or more, I think it’s important get to a beauty counter and see what’s new and sniff around a bit. With skincare and makeup, things are always being reformulated and improved. As we get older it’s easy to get stuck in a beauty rut, but that can age you. You won’t know what a difference something can make unless you try new things. Fortunately. they make foundations and powders now that give skin a flawless look and reflect light without being heavy. No one should be wearing foundation that cakes or settles into your pores anymore. If you still wear the same foundation you did a few years ago, it’s time to get some samples and see what is new. Most new makeups create a beautiful blur that makes imperfections largely go away.

Thanks to this beauty event, (that is my cute friends with above all taking notes during this show), I also found a new foundation and a new to me line to love, Chantecaille. I’d been using a tinted moisturizer so I went a step-up in coverage. This is my first time wearing a foundation in a jar, and one that has a peachy tone. I am ruddy because of rosacea, but have yellow undertones. I feel like this doesn’t look like makeup at all on, yet really gives my skin a beautiful glow. I believe the primer/sunscreen may be a factor in this too. I don’t notice my pores, lines and darkness with the two on. This is what I am using..

Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation is creamy, yet oil free. This is adjustable coverage you can layer if you want more. It feels like nothing on the skin and contains botanicals to calm, soothe and protect. This line is all vegan and cruelty free.

Chantecaille Sunscreen Primer. A little goes a long way and I have been loving how this protects my skin, SPF 45 without making it white. It is anti-inflammatory, protects against free-radicals and collagen loss. This, the foundation and all the other beautiful Chantecaille products like their Radiance Gel Bronzer, their Mermaid Eye Color (love this too)- are on sale at Neimans right now during their Beauty Sale and they come with Chantecaille gifts.

Neiman’s now carries the line KohGenDo from Japan. Formulated by a film star who wanted her skin to look perfect, this powder is a perfecter you dust on and it gives a soft glow to the whole face. This is not the heavy old- school powders that set on the skin and can age you. This will soften imperfections, which is what a modern setting powder should do.

Another discovery was Marc Jacob’s Beauty, his new skincare and makeup line and the women were going gaga for it on this beauty event. My friend Jeanne and I both bought the Highliner Gel Eye Crayon. They go on like butter and stay all day. I bought one called Brownout. Right now they are on sale for $21 so I may have to stock up on a few other cool colors like Stonefox, Violet Femme, and Jazzberry. This amazing product won the 2018 InStyle Beauty award for best eye pencil! If you want a smokey look you can smudge it right after applying, or let it set for 15 seconds and it won’t budge. It has 12 hour waterproof wear, yet it’s easy to remove with a regular cleanser.

Marc’s line also makes a wonderful new creme called Youthquake and it feels great and improves hydration and skin texture with pineapple enzymes and other wizardry to create hydrated and smooth skin. I love how pretty my skin looked from it. It’s on sale now too for $50. All of the Marc Jacob’s products are so innovative. The colors and formulations are really fun and have a retro vibe, like something your mom may have used in the 70s, and they are fairly good price points.

At Neiman’s I was given two other samples – a lip oil from Lilah B. a new line with some very lovely dual products that work for lip/cheek and eye. Her line is supposed to simplify and streamline beauty so you have less and I love that idea. All the products are vegan, gluten, synthetic and cruelty free. The lip oil is like gloss but with treatment. I am ordering the tinted lip balm in Savvy , below the perfect fall tone.

Grown Alchemist is another line we learned about and I am crazy for their cleanser. This line is the creation of skin scientists and nutritionists and is made with high quality performing ingredients. I’d love to try all their skin mists, hand and body cremes too.

The other win from this beauty day was discovering ReVive Moisturizing Night Creme which retexturizers, brightens, firms and renews the skin as you sleep. It feels so good going on and when you wake up, your skin looks radiant. For the cost, I would hope so, but it is on sale also right now.

In other beauty news, Neiman’s is now carrying Borghese here. I thought perhaps that line and it’s wonderful Italian muds was gone forever. Even their cult Crema Saponetta cleanser is in the newly repackaged line, so check it out if you were a fan of their lovely Italian products. My mom swore by the cleanser and the mud and I sold this line for a while a Nordstrom and it always had a huge fan base, due to the results people saw from it.

In the category of very affordable, my other fall must have are the beauty staples from the brand Glossier. Have any of you tried this brand? It has a huge following thanks to its Boy Brow product. I love the small wand and perfect amount of color for brows it leaves.

I also have their Brow Flick pen, so precise in drawing in each little hair of your brow if you want more definition and fullness.

And now..I’m in love with their semi-matte Generation G Lipstick (Like is the most flattering deep pink) that gives your lips the perfect just blotted look. Their Lash Slick Lengthening Mascara gives full fluffy lashes and stays on all day, without smudging and comes off easily. These products are excellent and so affordable. The lipstick and mascara are my daily!

Going into fall and winter, I use a lot of great products from Europe that are found in pharmacies there and we are now lucky to be able to buy here at home. The EU has much stricter standards for beauty products, so I always feel good using items from there.

My hair really becomes dried out like a haystack once cool weather hits. Highlighting it more often actually helps, but I also cannot live without Phyto 7 Creme from France. This is a leave-in conditioner that I use after my regular shampoo/conditioner. I rub about a nickel size, into the ends of my hair and around the face framing strands in the front when it’s towel dried. This line is all plant based and I’ve been using it since I sold it a Nordstrom ages ago. I have yet to find a similar product as good as this and if you have coarse hair you can try Phyto 9, which is a bit richer. I have fine hair and 7 is perfect for making my hair shine and look healthy without weighing it down. Their Rum Shampoo is another wonderful product I will occasionally splurge on. Phyto products are all made in France and botanical based and I usually buy them at Nordstrom.

While we are on hair, I recently rediscovered Klorane Blonde Highlights Shampoo with Camomile I had used as a teen. Back then, it was so exotic coming from France. It was rare to find an imported beauty product back then. I thought I’d give it another try as it’s having it’s 50th anniversary. It still is amazing and is better than any blonde shampoo making your hair look baby shiny and the color fresh. Klorane’s famous Dry Shampoo is also super clean without a smell and lifts the hair as well as making it feel great, not leaving a dirty dry feel some can. Klorane makes all kinds of unique hair items and many can be found at your local Pharmaca store, like ours in Los Gatos, or here. Their brand uses only botanicals it grows, is vegan and cruelty free and a portion of their profits goes to fund school gardens in the U.S.A. through the Budding Botanist Grant.

Lastly, as I have mentioned before, I cannot live without Weleda Products, from Germany, most importantly their Skinfood. I apply this about zillion times a day to my hands, and before bed to my feet and heels and back of my neck etc. This stuff is amazing, but you have to learn how to use it.

It’s uber thick and has a eucalyptus scent. Start by putting a blob on the back of one hand and rub the two backs together, then take the remainder and work it into your cuticles and between the fingers. Seems simple, but people can be put off by the thickness. If you have dry or old lady looking hands like me – nothing is as good, or fakes young skin like this stuff. This and all Weleda products are super pure, plant based. Skinfood can be used for chapped facial skin too, or as a moisturizer in very dry months. I have heard some like it as a highlighter on the face. I personally take it skiing. I’m super sensitive and have never broken out from it, it’s so pure. I also love their Baby Calendula Face Creme, a lovely pure creme I pack over any treatment products I wear at night. Check out their whole line – amazing plant based products. Find Skin Food at Whole Foods or here.

Lastly this is my autumn fragrance I’ve been loving, Boy from Chanel. I was drawn to it because my life is filled with boys. I also read the Chanel’s Riviera book this summer and this fragrance is inspired by her British boyfriend, Boy Capel, and Chanels’ love of masculine dress. It is the nicest sort of fresh scent with some musky undertones. The website describes it as lavender and geranium with woody notes. Perfect for this season!

I’d love to hear your beauty favorites or discoveries you’ve made lately. Please share below. I always want to hear what works for others as there is just so many choices out there!

Some links on this post may generate a commission, so thank you for supporting this blog.

Have a good week. I am especially keeping all those in California in my heart right now and hoping these winds and fires get under control soon. It’s becoming an annual fall tragedy and it isn’t good.

Take care friends,

Kim

My Spring Beauty Favorites

May 19, 2015 By kimwheeler 21 Comments

Some of you may know I’m a bit of a cosmetic junkie who worked in the beauty industry for seven years. Because of that, and for the blog, I am always trying new beauty products. Some are meh and others are great finds. I’d like to try to share with you the gems and hope to publish a regular post of my latest obsessions.

I am an almost 50 something, who was kind of a disaster skin-wise. I’ve had bouts with acne, rosacea, dryness, wrinkles, enlarged pores, dark spots and everything else. Right now, (knock wood), my skin is the best it’s been in years. I feel like I’ve finally found a few products that really work, and  an IPL treatment at SkinSpirit helped too. (I wrote about that here.) I have my regular arsenal of Retin A and such, but I do try and switch things up. I’m forever reading up on what is new and I strive to look for products with less harmful, more natural ingredients.

So here’s my current crushes I thought I’d share..

First, I’m in love with a fragrance that is so pretty, it’s truly like spring in a bottle. This Tracey Reese Eau de Parfum, was a Christmas present from the husband.

Why I love it…

It’s soft and light floral that lasts without being too strong.

The main notes are lavender, magnolia, green tea, sandalwood and musk!

Prettiest packaging- love the bottle.

My boys tell me I smell good! I love that.

Mine was bought at Anthropologie and it seems like they may be carrying it exclusively right now.

My other favorite new thing is the Color Control Cushion Compact from AmorePacific.
I first tried their products in Hawaii. It’s a Korean based company and AmorePacific is their high-end line. They also make Laneige products sold at Target. If you are reading up on skincare you’ll know that Korea is on the cutting edge right now of everything skincare related and have the latest and greatest!

My friend Kim and I both bought foundation, $60, which is liquid below a screen that becomes a soft finish when patted on the face with their patented puff. Each comes with a second refill for the compact as well, which means this will last quite a long time. Kim found the twin of this compact at Target for about $35, made by their lower line Laneige. You can take home a sample there, but are limited by only three colors!

The higher end Amore compact has the addition of their special green tea, bamboo and red ginseng, with an 8 hour release to continuously nourish the skin and revitalize it as you wear it. It’s skincare in a compact. Currently there are only four shades. I used the Tan 104 and I’m more yellow undertones with some redness and fair. It goes on invisible to me which I like.

This product won the Elle magazine genius award and also Allure’s Best of Beauty. After wearing both versions for several days, I prefer the Amore version as the Laneige changed color and darkened on me during the day. It also looked a bit heavier to me.

Why I love it..

SPF 50 with 4.5% titanium dioxide and 9.8% zinc oxide, which are good sunscreens.

Made my pores look virtually invisible and did not need touching up later in day.

Convenience of patting it quickly on and adjustable coverage, you can layer on for more cover.

It’s without parabens, sulfates and phthalates.

Makes my skin look the best it has in a long time.

Amore version available at here at Nordstrom.

While I was buying my compact, the ever alluring MAC counter was next door and I tried a few lipsticks on. I’m always on the lookout for a pink that isn’t too bright or barbie like. I think I have found the best yet. It’s called Hug Me from MAC and it’s soft, pretty and flattering.

 Why I love it..

Neither too dry nor glossy- the perfect soft finish.

Stays on well and leaves a nice color even after eating.

The perfect neutral pink, but still gives a good pop of color. It’s not a nude.

I sometimes use the Etcetera liner with it, but looks modern alone just a fresh slick of color.

MAC’s Hug me available here, at Nordstrom and their own boutiques.

Thanks to friends I often get tips about new things and even samples! My chic friend Leasa recently gave me a little goodie bag from Guerlain and now I am hooked on some of their products as well. I never would have known!

Guerlain, a French company around since 1828, and has been a beauty innovator. They were creators of the world’s first bronzer which still has a cult following, and their Meteorites highlighting pearls, which do as well. They are branching out using the Meteorites fabulous effects in other products.

Meteorites Light Diffusing Perfecting Primer looks like their famous meteorites but in a bottle that you pump out into a light liquid primer. I adore this stuff. You need very little to create a soft base for your foundation.

Why I love it..

Takes away that dry flat look I sometimes get with foundation alone. Brightens the face with it’s prism of colors.

Can be used as a highlighter-works wonderful around the dark corners of eyes and tops of cheeks.

Is a perfect canvas for your foundation and calms redness and sallowness enough to be worn alone for a pretty natural look.

Lovely for evening -use it on your bare shoulders or mix it with a bronzer for a glowy tan on the face.

Find it here, at Nordstrom, and other high end department stores.  I also want to try their Meteorites Baby Glow foundation which looks perfect for summer travel as it’s sheer and has SPF 25 and comes in a little tube.

The other little surprise in that bag was the Guerlain Cils d’Enfer Maxi Lash Mascara. Unlike any mascara I have, it’s light and pretty on the eye. I have straight blonde lashes and this makes them pop without weighing them down like so many of the new heavy formulas. I’m fair, but I always go with black. It might be fun to try the marine or violet colors available for evening out! This mascara is $30, but I figure it’s worth it if you use it for 3 months which I usually do, sometimes longer.

Why I love it..

Curls and lengthens while making the lash line stand out.

Pretty and striking lashes yet natural.

No clumping or flaking.

Has a special formula to set the curl of your lash.

Easy to remove!!

As above available here at Nordstrom, and also at higher end retailers.

Something I really love having in my bag all year is a face spray.

Jane Iredale Pommisst Hydration Spray is addicting. It’s a ultra fine face mist that I have carried in my bag now for almost 2 months. If you read about my recent makeover at Halo, they used Jane products on me and it’s where I purchased it. It’s wonderful to mist your skin if you live in a drier climate as I do and I especially appreciate having this in the car as I tend to flush and get red.

Why I love it..

Calms my skin and cools, especially on dry days.

Helps prevent flushing and redness. I use it after exercising and tennis and it really helps.

Smells lightly of a pomegranate and feels like a treat.

Mist is so fine it’s perfect to set makeup and lasts 3xs as long as an Evian small spray.

Jane Iredale is now fortunately sold at some nicer salons like Halo, which I adore, and can also be bought at Nordstrom and nicer beauty supply shops.

Because it’s been a dry year here everyone I knows is looking for a good moisturizer, especially for night. I love waking up to dewy and soft skin.  During Whole Foods Beauty week I bought the cute bag they had created for the event and inside was this great little tube of cream from New Zealand skincare company Trilogy.

I pat this Vital Moisturizing Cream on at night alone or sometimes over my Retin A or a serum. I always wake with wonderful results.

Why I love it…

It’s key ingredient is certified organic rose hip oil, which is Trilogy’s signature ingredient in many products, and which fights environmental aggressors.

The whole line uses natural plant oils and botanical extracts.

Trilogy is huge supporters of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation and other
environmental charities.

This company is completely organic and eco driven. Read more about them here.

You can find it at Whole Foods, so it’s easy to throw in your cart when your doing a milk run!

It can also be found at Amazon.

Lastly,  one more product I’ve really grown to love is NUXE Micellar Cleansing Water. I originally bought this in Paris at a pharmacy and just found it again. It feels like water and is excellent to remove face, lip and eye makeup with just a cotton pad.

Why I love it..

No oily residue like other removers, just fresh soft skin.

Does not sting eyes and safe to use over lips too.

Wonderful alone when I’m too tired to wash, or perfect to remove makeup and sunscreen before using with a face wash.

I saw improvement in my skin after using this. When using daily sunscreen on the face, you need another step to help remove it before washing so your pores can breathe. Sunscreen can be very hard to wash away.

I found many of the lovely NUXE products at our local  Walgreen’s in store beauty boutique. If you don’t have one, it’s also at Amazon where it’s a little cheaper as well.

I’m excited to tell you about some super sun products for hair and face coming in June!
Please share your own beauty and skin products you adore as well in the comments. I’d like to get a little monthly beauty forum going on the blog. Let’s hear what is new and wonderful that I may have missed!

Have a lovely week!!

The weekend post is up with chat about the trendin The weekend post is up with chat about the trending colors for 2023 in home decor and fashion.. Did you love the 80’s? If so this is perhaps a more sophisticated version with sherbet tones and bits of magenta, greens and navy. Here I added a bit of these Easter tones to the coffee table with a grass cloth box, one of my books and a candle. I think the best way to update things is to add touches to the home and closet that appeal to you and mix them in with neutrals..
What do you think of these colors? I think they’re fun. Some clothing pieces bring me back to my Esprit loving days. It could be fun to add a shirt, shoe or bag in these tones and I selected a handful to consider..

Also on the blog, a few good white jeans, skin cleansers you may need and more!

I love the look of a classic white jean, paired with a chunky sweater or turtleneck in black, beige, tan, creams- neutral colors always look fantastic. Today it was warm enough that I could go sockless and wear my Madewell loafers with them and a little jacket I have from Anthro. We had the beach to ourselves and the weather was winter perfect. ☀️Cold and sunny. We had a picnic of sandwiches from Zoccolis deli and took in the sun and sea air while watching surfers and birds.

I have to share a snippet of just some of the wisd I have to share a snippet of just some of the wisdom that was Martin Luther King. He will always be one of my biggest heroes and ten years ago I wrote a small post highlighting some of his very meaningful words and quotes that we could all use as a life guide. Link to the post in my bio and more on my stories.

Do you know he is the only American to have a holiday for him that hasn’t been a president? He also had a low approval rating when he died. That has changed. Now people around the world use his teachings of living in peace and the fight for justice as a model we can strive for. I find his words so very needed in a world that is polarized more than ever. ❤️
