Life at My New Kitchen Counter with Serena & Lily

September 24, 2019 By kimwheeler 32 Comments

I’m so excited to share our home remodel with you guys and I thought I’d begin with my favorite space, the kitchen. It’s finally fall this week and I’m ready for baking and warm comfort foods! Do you all feel the same? It makes me so happy right now to spend time in here.

When I was planning this house, I used a binder to collect all my dream images, and in that were Serena & Lily catalogs that I used for inspiration. I bought some of my favorite pieces for the house from Serena & Lily, my Malibu Chandelier in my dining room, and my Capiz Scalloped Light in my entry. I am in love with both and they have made the spaces in this home look modern and stylish.

Everything they do is very light and pretty and has a California casual aesthetic, which, if you’re a frequent reader of my blog, you know I adore. I had to read my email twice when they asked me to partner on a post about Life at The Kitchen Counter. I rarely do partnerships, but this is a company I have loved for a long time. They are based in Northern California, Sausalito in fact. Their products have turned out to be the best quality pieces I chose for this remodel.

Since everyone gravitates around the kitchen, having a big island has always been a dream for me. I wanted to have room for us to spread out and for the seating to be comfy as well as stylish. I found both in these Balboa Counter Stools from Serena & Lily. The mix of the grey rattan with the brass accents is so elegant!

In the kitchen, as in the whole house, I went with my favorite materials -woods, natural stones and variations on white and grey. It’s livened up by the brass accents on these stools and my dark gold drawer pulls and knobs. The bits of gold are like jewelry for the room and give it a touch of glam and fun.

Worry not that I’ve chosen white cushions and have boys in the house! The white basketweave chair pads are made of Perennials, a stain resistant fabric that repels water and resists fading. They look chic, but they are also comfy and the guys have been hanging here and I am okay with their tacos etc… Everything just brushes right off! How cool is that?

Known for their fresh take on casual dining and home, Serena & Lily were the perfect choice for the look I was going for. They embody the California lifestyle very well with materials that are luxe and casual chic, yet never stiff or formal. Inviting is how everything feels and looks.

This Serena & Lily’s Seaview Rug is my other favorite thing in the kitchen. I wanted a long runner for the kitchen, something cool with a pattern, but that would wear well. This rug is made of recycled plastic and is water and UV resistant, yet feels like an expensive wool rug underfoot. It’s nice that you can spot clean it and also hose it off outside if you need to! Helpful with all these young guys who like to cook. So far everyone’s a fan, including the cats, who we have to step around when cooking dinner.

I like that you can flip this rug and use the other side at some point. I think this affordable rug was a smart investment and I am going to order another for our hallway.

This is the grey color of the Seaview Runner which is 2.6 x 10 feet. I also love the Turnstone Rug made of the same material.

For an open light feeling I went with open shelving on the uppers and have some of my pottery pieces from my trip to Positano here. Next to the stove I placed this cute ceramic Spinnaker Tray with rattan handles. It plays well with my mix of materials and I love that it reminds me of Hawaii with its tropical look.

The tray is handy next to the stove and holds my olive wood spoons from my travels and today these pretty Brela Napkins. I also use the tray on the island to hold more cloth napkins and bites when entertaining like below.

I am kind of a tray addict as they are a chic way of displaying your things, while keeping areas tidy. Serena & Lily has the most wonderful selection of trays in many colors and materials. This Spinnaker Tray also comes in Navy. My other favorites are this gorgeous Stonington fossilized clam shell tray (would be stunning on a bar), this Leila Bone Round tray is elegant for a bathroom or vanity counter, and I am in love with this set of three Marine Trays made of enamel and brass, so cool for a coffee table. I also have a crush on this wicker Bedford Tray and want it for an outdoor bar I hope to set up soon.

Isn’t this a fun way to set up a casual entertaining? Have everyone grab their items from a tray.

We’re loving our island for most of our meals now. I feel bad for the dining room, but it’s just so easy to cook here and set a cute meal quickly. I’ve been using cloth napkins exclusively now for years and I would never go back. They give meals a quality that paper napkins just can’t. I do one load of cloth napkins a week and never iron them, just fold them when warm.

Do you use a step-stool in the kitchen? My friend Erin came by and saw my new Teak Step Stool and flipped out about how cute it was. I think the wood and white is darling. Being on the shorter side, I’ve used it a ton already for my high cabinets and to get to my top open shelves. It’s sturdy enough that Max has has been using it for putting up bulbs and things. It is super durable teak and would be cute in a kid’s bath at the sink as well. Everyone can use one of these!

I hope you are loving the change of season as much as I am. Do you find yourself at the kitchen more as the weather turns cooler? I sure do. I’m looking forward to making soups and baking, pumpkins, pear tarts, and all the goodness that is coming. I hope this gives you a little glimpse into my new kitchen and some autumn inspiration!

Thank you to Serena & Lily for collaborating on this post and helping to sponsor the blog. As always, all opinions, writing, photos and mini-pumpkins on this blog are exclusively my own. 😉

Friday Sharing

February 17, 2017 By kimwheeler No Comments

Hello everyone. Well we made it to Friday and yay for it being a three-day weekend for those of us here in the states. Some of us even have a full week off for schools. Californian schools get a ‘winter recess’ about now and it’s nice. It would be even better if a series of storms weren’t blowing in, but we’ll try to make the best of it. We were going to head down to Santa Monica for a few days, but the weather forecast looks even worse for them, so we will stay closer to home and do a day trip to SF and possibly a small overnight to Carmel if we get some sun.

We did have a sunny Valentine’s Day here and I took the opportunity to wear new suede flats I had bought a month ago. The pink color was something I did not have in my closet and I thought they would be great for spring. I paired it with a heart dress I found at a vintage shop a few years ago and  still love. For $7 this dress has been the best! The shoes, I will pair with my new fringy jeans and blouses for a ladylike vibe. Something about pink shoes just made me feel happy all day. I hope you all had a good Valentines.

In the meantime, I’m looking forward to warmer days ahead. The few sunny days we had this week made me really get that spring feeling and the impetus to try a few new things and plan our summer  travel.

This week I have also been furiously researching ideas for my home remodel and fell in love with this home from the March Martha Stewart Living. To me, this is the perfect Northern California home, though it’s owned by a record exec and his family and is in Southern Cal.

I’m crazy about the white and black and the wonderful windows. The photos were not on the Martha site yet, but get the magazine to see this whole home. I love every single bit…The brick porch, wood shelves, vintage music posters, simple kitchen and more…

What a cute family!

Planning my remodel, I have looked at a ton of homes, and overall I want less fuss, less things and more light, more windows, more indoor-outdoor living. I want to use as much of the home I have and just tweak it to refresh and update it. I don’t want to build a huge house..I want my home to honor the neighborhood it was built in and the ranch style that it was meant to be. I want it to feel roomy, but  be just big enough to still be cozy. This home above fits that bill exactly.

For more black and white chic, you might follow my friend Annie of Lovely Things blog who has the most darling home in Connecticut and adheres to a black and white aesthetic that is also cozy and beautiful. This week she shared a fun project you might tackle if your stuck in this week. It was turning her chalkboard wall into a big calendar with different grey hues. I love seeing a whole month calendar each day, even when I use my phone one. This is such a cute idea for a family space like the kitchen.

LOVE!!

On the remodeling subject, who does not love Fixer Upper? I have to say even my husband thinks Chip is cool. Who hasn’t dreamed of moving there and having Joanna help with a remodel? Dale, a fellow Nor Cal gal, now living in Texas, visits their Magnolia Silos to have lunch and shop with her cute family and tells you how to plan a visit, whether you are in Texas or out of state on her Savvy Spice blog.

Dale and her little daughter, Wilhelmina.

Another thing I really hope to accomplish this week is donate a bunch of things I’ve cleared out of the home this winter. Janet of The Gardener’s Cottage shared the idea of eliminating 5 things a day, from the home which is just what we all need. I first saw this on Annie’s blog and had to share as we could all do this. A home with clutter is stressful, yet by doing this daily it’s not a huge effort, yet also keeps the mindset that everything we bring into the home should be something we really want and need. Check out Janet’s blog as she really has mastered the art of living mindfully and beautifully at the same time.

Janet’s pretty California home.

As I mentioned before, I’m using this bad weather to plan some sunny getaways and I was thrilled this week to see my pal Dani, of Mop Philosophy share her wardrobe plan for an Italian Riviera getaway. Dani has an amazing ability to coordinate the prettiest mix of hues and always creates a sort of color story each season and for holidays. Some of her packing pieces…

Also cool is that Dani shopped her closet for her trip. She is a advocate of buying quality clothing and keeping it. She collects unique and special pieces, and sometimes finds things from past seasons online too. She inspires me to buy better and find things that are already out there, not necessarily new, and to shop my closet. Wonderful for the planet as well.

In that trip planning mode, April of MsBintheBayArea, wrote about her trip to Charleston this week and her photos make me want to go now!

The homes alone are worth the trip yet April always finds great hotels and restaurants. I love her tips and her photographs, here and below. I have yet to get to this part of the states and I know I will love the southern hospitality as well.

Thanks to all the bloggers for letting me share their photos! I hope to be back to share some pink I added to the home and also my new favorite hotel in San Francisco.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Kim

I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room today as my builder @mikemccloudconstruction shared it too. I still love the way it came out! I had saved many inspiration pictures of how I wanted this to look. I was lucky Mike helped me make this happen. A good builder who listens and has ideas as well, helps so much. I’m sharing some of the extra details up close.

I loved this blue sort of organic watery tile for a pool bath. I also knew I wanted an open shelf for all the pool towels so people could grab them on the way out the door. The @serenaandlily mirror definitely has that nautical almost porthole, sort of look and picked up the unfinished oak color. I used an RH pendant light and the sink is Victoria and Albert. The counter is from a slab of @vadaraquartz that I spilt and used in the laundry as well as the boy’s bath. I choose an inexpensive cement tile for this space and the connecting laundry/mud room which works with drippy pool feet! It’s been almost four years and all still looking great!

DM me if anyone wants details I left out! I thought I did a post on this, but maybe not! I need to do that with all the baths.

Hope you all have a good week and get some nature in the first day of spring!

Are you watching the @bnpparibasopen ? I just got Are you watching the @bnpparibasopen ? I just got back from three whirlwind days with pals and we had a ball. It was so good to be in the sun and and warmth -with snow capped California mountains as a backdrop. We went in the beginning part of the tournament which we always do, and got to see Andy Murray, Sabalenka, Zverev, Raducanu, and so many fantastic other players. We basically eat, slept and breathe tennis for two days straight and we loved it! You can still catch play on the @tennischannel 🎾

I will share another Reel of all the stylish people.. Something about tennis brings out the sharpest dressers and there was excellent people watching.

If you love tennis, this is a bucket list tournament. They call the fifth slam and it’s getting crazy popular so plan a year ahead of you want to go. We reserved our hotel that was walking distance a year ago. More tips on my BNP post that I update each year.

I separated the sectional and sort of like it apar I separated the sectional and sort of like it apart. This RH couch is a LOT of maintenance and can look pretty deflated after a weekend of hanging out. In hindsight, I’d buy a couch that does not require so much fluffing and cushion alternating. I snapped this pic because it was one of the times I had the pillows looking nice on it. You also need a lot of pillows to not get swallowed up by it. I call it the great white.

The local RH actually has a cleaning team that steams and fluffs their couch and I’ve seen them before the shop opens. I found it hard to get reviews on this couch before buying because RH does not have them online and if you notice they don’t do social media… so I’m just putting it out there. I will share what I love here, but I think it helps to be transparent about what is a disappointment too.

Have you ever made a rustic style scone? These are Have you ever made a rustic style scone? These are the only kind I’ve ever made and it all started when I had one in Paris at the @rosebakeryparis years ago. My sweet mom later bought me their cookbook. I was thrilled and have made scones with their fantastic recipe ever since.

I was missing my mom and thinking about her as today is her birthday, (actually tomorrow she was a Leap Year baby) and made these yesterday. She also loved lemon so I tried a variation adding Meyer Lemon zest and juice and lots of almonds and it was SO good! These are a great treat for a rainy afternoon with tea. ☕️ Recipe is on my story.. and I’ll add it to my cookery highlight. The Breakfast Lunch Tea book from Rose Bakery is a treasure if you can still get it with many delicious recipes using whole grains and healthy ingredients.

It’s raining cats here! Def scone weather!
