gun control laws

We Owe Our Kids a Better Country

February 18, 2018 By kimwheeler 23 Comments

Okay, this was going to be a post about beauty products. It just seemed wrong this week. I’m too sad. I cannot begin anything without addressing the Florida school shooting. I have shared my thoughts on gun violence before. As a Californian, I am pretty lucky we have some of the strictest laws in the country and people here generally are not gun toters. Still, I fall apart when these massacres happen. How sad is it that I have to speak of these in plural terms? Good grief, our country needs help and if we adults cannot have the guts to fight for change, then by God the children will, as those in Florida promised this week. They seem to be our only hope as we finally have people up-in-arms and screaming for change in a state with some of the loosest gun laws. I cannot believe about Florida and how it’s been held hostage by one woman and her NRA agenda.

Most importantly, do not buy into this argument that it is a mental health thing. This is gun issue. I care very much about kids and others who are distraught and need help. Yes, there are many with mental health issues, but those people also exist in Australia, Scotland, Canada, England, Japan and so many other countries with strong gun control and less guns. Those nations have zero school massacres. We don’t have more unstable people, but we have more guns and there is the problem.

Calling this a mental health issue is the number one tactic of the NRA, those in Congress who receive their funding, and our President; all using the same agenda to benefit gun manufacturers. It’s sickening. Yet the same Congress and the President revoked an Obama era law in February that made it harder for people with mental illness to get a gun.  His new budget calls for funding for the mentally illness to be slashed and even money for school safety to be cut $25 million.

Some people say they will never give up their Second Amendment Rights and that they are not safe without a gun. That is faulty logic as those who own guns are more likely to die from their own gun in the home by accident or suicide than use it on an intruder. The facts are that the risk of homicide is three times higher in homes with firearms.

To those who hold their guns so dear, I ask these questions… Can you give up your weapons for the safety of children? Can you give up your guns for the safety of your community? Can you give up your weapons for the good of the country and in the hope of creating a more safe nation and a less violent world? Would you give up your gun if it meant never to hear again of a school massacre? Can we agree to disagree about Second Amendment Rights? Can we agree to forgo some of our rights in return for the safety of our children?  We have agreed as a country to do this already for safety from terrorism from abroad.

If we can frame the message in these terms I believe in the good of the people in this country and the hope that they can see the insanity of the gun proliferation we live with here. In the U.S. there are 88 guns for every 100 persons. That has turned us slowly into a country that abides vigilante justice and glamorizes weapons of war.

These are the things this week that got me choked up and unable to think straight today and every day since this shooting.

  • Someone’s quote that ‘Children must die so guns can live, ‘ from a reader in the NY Times.
  • From a Washington Post article comments section, what people are actually thinking
    • Parents of one little girl put a door stop in her backpack with instructions to put it on her classroom door if she hears shots – she’s six years old.
    • One little kid told reporters that he would rather die protecting his classmates because he wouldn’t want to be the only one left alive if they’re all dead – he’s 10 years old.
    • Another little girl told her mom that she couldn’t wear her blinky shoes to school any more because the shooter could track her in the dark. She’s 8 years old.

What We Can Do

We need to get gun owners to see the change they could make by changing their minds. We need to get very single human who is eligible to vote on the next election to vote those beholden to the NRA out and those for sensible gun laws in. We need to keep up the dialogue, let our voices be heard and share the facts about scourge of guns in our country. We not let the mental health excuse cloud our ability to see that the guns are the problem. We need to spend billions not on a wall, but on fixing our gun problem and protecting us from our own American grown gun toting terrorists.

I feel powerless, but one thing I was able to do was start a fundraiser on my personal Facebook Page. I did it for Everytown for Gun Safety, one of the best anti-gun groups. I was shocked friends donated almost $700 in 24 hours. People want to make a difference and this was a way and their Facebook page makes it easy and people can use Paypal. I highly recommend that if you have friends and family who feel the same about this. Here in California where we already have strict gun laws, we can help by donating to a national organization can help change the laws in all our states, which is what we need.

Let’s hope we get a huge groundswell on March 24 when the March for Our Lives will take place in Washington D.C. and across the nation, not unlike the women’s march. This was begun by students and we must join them in our towns and cities to let the world know we are better than this. This is not the nation I love. I refuse to put guns above the lives of children. Let’s be the change and get off our butts and do something. Our kids deserve to not live in fear and go to school in happiness without dodging bullets and cowering in classrooms sending their last goodbyes to loved ones on their phones.

Thanks for listening. I’d love to hear your suggestions on how we can stop the madness in America.

Kim

Be the Change- Guns Are Ruining This Country

October 3, 2017 By kimwheeler 19 Comments

Yesterday was a horrible day that will live in our memories as Americans. I just could not go another hour without sharing my thoughts on this. It has so affected me I refuse to believe we can’t do more to change the laws here.

Beautiful humans- mothers, brothers, fathers, sisters, sons, daughters and friends lost their lives in another senseless act of gun violence. We cannot pray or say our hearts are with the victims anymore. The words are sounding hollow, especially as they were echoed by multiple congressional Republicans yesterday whose own campaigns have been padded with NRA funds. Something must be done before our country as we know it is gone forever.

The fact is America has put the right to own whatever weapons we chose, above the safety of us all. After Newtown and the slaughter of small children in their classrooms with their teachers, we still did not pass gun legislation. Unbelievable. Our apathy knows no bounds. The NRA continues its reign over the Republican congress who seem to have black hearts. How they live with themselves I do not know, and this group includes Paul Ryan and Mike Pence. Trump spoke at an NRA gathering in April and promised to ‘Come through for them,’ and that he would ‘Expand gun rights.’

Tell me what about gun rights needs to be expanded?

Just one of the great charts by Vox show we have too many gun rights.

Polls show a majority of Americans are for safe and effective gun control. So why aren’t our politicians following through on this? No one needs automatic weapons and machine guns. We need to follow the example of Australia, who changed the gun culture in their country after a mass shooting by buying back guns and making gun laws much more stringent. It has been amazingly effective and they have now one of the lowest gun violence rates in the world. This great article with gun facts and studies on Vox tells the statistics and facts we should all see about how gun ownership affects our safety in so many ways.

What makes us defend weapons that kill so many? No idea. Apparently some believe it is for personal safety. The NRA keep peddling myths like guns will be confiscated and you’ll need to defend yourself. Don’t forget your Second Amendment Rights. ( Written at the founding of our country when we needed a militia.) You have the right to bear arms. Against what? The zombie apocalypse? The crime rate in the United States is the lowest it’s ever been. Statistics and study after study show that those who live in homes with guns are personally more at risk for homicides- to be killed with their own guns or to have a family member commit suicide.

Allowing any kind of gun purchase with no regulations on the internet and without background checks leads to anyone buying them. Other nations have tough tests one needs to pass to register and use a gun and rules about storage of firearms you must obey. Not here. Each state can have its own laws, which makes it easy to buy in one and bring to another. Storage? Go ahead and leave it under your bed if you want. Frightening.

It is also easier to get a gun than a driver’s license thanks to the NRA’s insidious influence on our laws. Thus we have a country where we openly carry guns in some places and some even believe in vigilante justice, taking the law into their own hands to protect themselves. I ask you has any of these shootings been stopped by gun toting individuals? No.

I do not wish for my children to live in such a world, do you? We can do better. Let’s look to other nations who have less guns and their correlating death rates- lower suicides, homicides, and mass murders. This video is excellent in pointing out the fact that remains indisputable – less guns equal less gun deaths. It’s simple math and cannot be refuted.

We’ve got this. We are stronger together. There are so many of us who are done with this way of living among guns. Let’s be the change by doing all we can to save our country from this scourge. By pushing for laws, only voting for those who support gun control, and beginning initiatives like gun buy-backs through independent endowments we support or start we can make a strong start. Read here about how this excellent buy back program in Australia caused deaths to plummet. These are just some ideas, but we need to hear more and think out of the box. If we begin today and work towards this every single day, maybe we can make this country safer for future generations.

I refuse to live in a nation that is normalizing mass shootings and where moms carry their guns in their baby bags to Walmart. I want us to live in peace together without weapons.

Let’s value the lives of humans in our country over the ability to own any weapon we want.

Thank you for listening,

Kim

I’m super excited because today Juliet and Eliza I’m super excited because today Juliet and Elizabeth and I are starting a virtual brooch/holiday pin party for December and we want you to join us! ✨

I know many of you probably have some lovely little sparkles that are sitting in a drawer or box from your mom or grandma, or perhaps just ones that you haven’t worn for a long time. Get those lovelies out and let’s see them.

During the month of December, tag us with #showusyourbling or #christmaspin and we will share your pretty pins on our stories.

This is another way to get creative with your outfits during this festive month ! It also sparks so many nice comments and conversations. I’ve been chatted up by so many people wearing my mom or grandma’s brooches and I enjoyed hearing about theirs as well.

It’s a way to keep those who we inherited them from, close to our hearts at this time of the year . 🥰 I always think my mom or grandma would be so thrilled to know I’m wearing their special brooches.

Men are wearing brooches now too! So we’d love for the guys to join in as well.

Stop by our blogs today for more ways to wear your pins and links to some good ones if you’re wanting to start your own little collection like I have!

I just had to put this out as I’ve already had s I just had to put this out as I’ve already had several friends saying they are stressed about not doing anything for the holidays yet -and it’s not even December!!

Then yesterday my dad said he felt some anxiety because all his neighbors had their Christmas lights up and he hasn’t done his.
That really made me upset. My 84 year old dad!

This is not a race.

The person with the most things done is not the winner in fact, that person may not be enjoying the season as much as somebody else who’s taking it slowly and going at their own pace, and doing less.

Remind yourself to enjoy the little things this season that matter to you. Also say no to things . You don’t need to do all you think you do. Let things go that aren’t bringing you joy.

This holiday season shouldn’t be about stress!

That’s the end of this PSA from a person who has bought two gifts and still has Thanksgiving decor up!

Is anyone else feeling overwhelmed?

Tell me below, have you made the season better by doing less? Are you a late shopper or card writer? That is okay.

Do you know people used to shop and decorate the tree in the days before Christmas just a few decades ago??

It’s the weekend blog time and I’m sharing the It’s the weekend blog time and I’m sharing the fourth part of our travel to the UK with our visits to Chatsworth House, Bakewell and the medieval walled city of York! I loved this area and if you are a Jane Austen fan, you know 500 year old Chatsworth was her inspiration for Mr Darcy’s Pemberley and in many of the films. It’s amazing it’s been in the same family for 16 generations and you can have the best day there walking the house and grounds and lunch..

October was a magical time to visit these places with foggy days and fall weather! We absolutely loved it and York has to be one of my favorite cities now. The walls were so fun to walk and we stayed at the most charming hotel..@grayscourtyork
