The Best New Slides for Spring

March 14, 2018 By kimwheeler 6 Comments

Of course the week I plan to do a sandal post it decided to rain cats and dogs here in Northern Cal!! I’ve been obsessing on these easy pool slides that are everywhere now. I admit it took me a while to not see them as the ‘swimmer’s shoes’ they once were in my 1980’s high school days. They always looked comfy and with their contoured footbed and rubber souls, the latest incarnations are the same, but with a bit more style. Still, some of the coolest outfits have been with the original Adidas versions, seen below. I love these because I love a shoe I can just pop on and run out the door.

I recently spotted this pair of Tory Burch soft pink slides and bought them as a Valentine’s gift to myself! They were perfect on my latest getaway to Indian Wells for the BNP tennis tournament where I wore them on the plane and also for a long day on my feet watching matches and also for a day at the La Quinta Spa. I wore them with denim shorts and a flowey pink blouse. My only thought is next time I might get the black footbed version as they can show a little dirt, but like a true shower shoe you can take them in the shower with you, give them a little shampoo and they are like new again..

Nordstrom has a huge selection and I’ve shared just a few of the prettiest choices below. For warm weather and travel they are perfect as they are light for packing! This selections below run the gamut on all price points…

The Tory Burch slides  I bought also come in navy, and black.

Another Tory Burch version with a quilted look.

This slide by Gucci is fun with it’s flowers.

I like this Botkier version for spring!

This glamorous version by Badgley Mischka would be fun for a night out when you need comfort. It also comes in a black, tan and pink versions. I’d wear it with distressed jeans and a silvery top or sweater.

These are the original Adidas versions in a new look. They also still come in black and navy in the original stripes still here.

For the person who wants an upgraded version of the pool slide, this J Slides look with a suede footbed and woven top is less waterproof, but as comfy and easier to wear everyday. The pewter color is great with so much, but it also comes in a denim blue, tan and coco colors.

I personally love the minimalist look by YSL – the pool slide for one who can really splash out…No pun intended!! It also comes in a pretty nude color. Don’t think I’d be getting these wet for the price..They are leather.

Pedro Garcia has all kinds of pretty versions. This is another that could go from day to evening and does have a rubber sole. Versions in black and pink as well.

Garcia’s disco ball version is fun and comes in gold as well.

Gucci has a few more versions in the rubber sole with the gold horse bit (also in hot pink and black) and also with the pearls and traditional Gs pattern…

Gucci has about ten versions including mens!

Valentino’s Rockstud slides come in 5 shades.

Melissa Slides I have seen in a lot of boutiques including Trina Turk. They look supremely comfy and also come in an array of colors like the blue and floral.

I can see a few teens loving the fact that they are fruit scented!

This pink above is another Melissa version which also comes in two florals not pictured.

These Joshua’s are also darling for teens and anyone with a sense of humor.

These Vans slides – pictured in pineapple slice color, come in multiple hues and at a great price point.

Finally I couldn’t resist adding this fun silver Marc Jacobs….

And this tapestry version from Steve Madden.

Nordstrom really seems to have to corner marketed on these pool slides with literally hundreds of versions – both women’s and men’s versions here.

Here’s to warm weather sandal season soon!

Making White Jeans Elegant

May 13, 2014 By kimwheeler No Comments

Love this casual chic look on Christy Turlington.
Right now it’s the school year’s end, and almost Summer and there are so many school events and gatherings.
I’m always stumped about what to wear to these things.
Dresses can feel sometimes too fancy.
You can easily throw on the same jeans or yoga pants, but why not have a little polish?
Sometimes just a bit more effort makes you feel good and people take notice.

It can be as easy as upgrading to white jeans!

Last week, I tried to dress up a bit for the school book fair I was working.
I threw on some new white jeans, simple Patagonia sandals from many years ago, and a Joie silk sweater with a Banana Republic leather tote I love.
Surprisingly, my friend Elizabeth was in something very similar, white jeans with a soft grey sweater.

I realized when I saw her, how much I adore the beauty of this understated combo. Also, my friend Elizabeth has this simple and elegant stuff down to a science.

Her addition of pretty pewter braided sandals with the palest polished feet hands and toes looked so Jackie Kennedy to me.

Take note of those sandals and pale pedicure!

Elizabeth has the kind of style that makes me want to chuck it all and redo my home and wardrobe!

Her hair always has that just blown out look and she usually carries a luxe looking handbag with a simple design. She inspires me to strive to look a little more finished with my hair and clothes.

We tried to take a selfie- NOT! You get the idea though..White jeans and a pullover.
Take Elizabeth’s cue, white jeans with a loose sweater is the perfect combo for May.
Add in a flat sandal and you are finished and ready to go.
When I stress about what to wear to an event, I need to remember this clean, simple look always exudes taste and class.
You just need a few tweaks to keep it from being bland….

Upgrading from simple to simply elegant:

Pair with a silk or linen sweater vs. cotton. (It’s worth the extra money for the wear you will get and the feel and expensive look.)

White jeans vs. regular jeans.

Pretty flat sandals vs. flip-flops. ( I know it’s easier to step in flip-flops, but a flat sandal is a game changer for the whole look.)

A tote or bag in a soft leather or solid vs. a complicated heavy or designer logo bag.

A fresh natural manicure and pedi with Essie’s Mademoiselle or pinky sheer vs. bright, white, dark or frosted.

Clean shiny hair done and styled.

Minimal and simple jewelry.

I just replaced my old white jeans from a few years ago that were looking tight.
It’s good to refresh this basic every year or so.
These are my new white jeans that I just found and loving.
I was also contemplating these Paige ones.
I’d love another pair of white jeans with this boyfriend fit , and if you are short as I am, these J Crew ones are a terrific price right now.
I also love these dressier streamlined white crops from Karen Kane.

Remember the addition of the pretty flat sandal makes this look more Cannes than Santa Cruz.
One more tip: Always buy your white jeans a size up. Skintight is never good in light colors.
Stay chic!

What to wear to a Summer Wedding or Occasion II

June 5, 2013 By kimwheeler No Comments

Kate Moss attending a wedding.
Summer is coming fast and along with that so many special events. That means weddings, graduations, reunions and vacations.  I’m thinking that is why one of my most popular and older posts is what to wear to a Summer wedding… It can be a bit stressful finding the right thing to wear that is flattering and is appropriate. Sometimes you aren’t happy with your body or your closet.
Try not to worry. Remember the most attractive people are those who are confident and fun. It’s never the thinnest or ones wearing the most expensive clothes! Heck I personally think it’s the women who think out of the box and wear something older or vintage or totally different that impress me!
Jessica Alba is perfect here for a Summer wedding.
The thing is you need some time to plan what you are going to wear to any special event. You probably shouldn’t be looking the night before! Go through your closet a few weeks prior. This may be a good time to do a Spring cleaning out. Try on all your potential outfits. See what fits, what still works and what needs to go. Be ruthless. Take a good look at what you still love and has lasted. Notice what flatters you and forget trends. Know what you feel good in. That way if you need to shop you have some idea of what works for you. You won’t buy something just like you already own or buy something that just doesn’t flatter.
I just did this and for me I noticed the dresses and things that I still love and have lasted were J Crew. I also noticed shift dresses stay in style and I have several that are over 20 years old. One is a raw silk sleeveless shift with pockets and a scalloped hem from Ann Taylor. Also sadly, some dresses like halters no longer look great on me. I honestly look better more covered up than showing all my moles and spots off. I realized the most flattering length for me is right above the knee.
I purged my closet of 6 bags of clothes that had been there a while. It felt great to have a clean closet and smaller wardrobe. Everything had to fit perfect and be really loved. Shopping after doing this was surprisingly easy. I came home with nothing the first few trips because I knew exactly what I had and that I didn’t want to add anything that wasn’t going to be just what I needed. Loving this white bracelet, but…got one already! Another striped top was darling and hey I already own about 5. You get where I am going. It felt liberating to walk out of stores with nothing.
Time is crunched this part of the year so I have resorted to online shopping and it’s been amazing how many store I can hit from the couch. I’m especially enticed by the free shipping and returns at Nordstrom. You really have nothing to lose. I also find I can tell by the models body type if something is going to flatter me or not. I also read the customer reviews on items at the bottom of the page. Some customers state their height, weight, size and body type and will let you know is someting is too big or tugs or they had to order a size up. Very helpful.
Kate Bosworth in a floaty dress, clutch and pretty sandals at a wedding.
Another friend who is short on time calls the personal shopper at her local Nordstrom and they have many choices in her size already waiting for her along with possible shoes and bags. It’s all complimentary and many store have this. If you hate shopping or just can’t find the time, use these services! It’s just like when the stars use a stylist. They do the same for you. It’s great to have the opinion of someone who puts together clothes all day long. They know what works and what doesn’t! It’s free. You tell them your budget and they will work on making you look good within it.
I’ve linked to some of my favorite picks of all the pretty things out there this season. I have to say I spent some serious time online and there are more dresses than ever. I particularly like the sites that have culled certain dresses together and grouped them as wedding guest dresses. Makes it way easier. Nordstrom was one in particular and you can find it here.
For a Summer wedding the easiest option is a lovely dress, a pretty clutch and a small wrap or scarf to drape on your shoulders. Notice below. She’s got chic hair, small bag (don’t even thing of bringing your regular daytime shoulder bag), wrap or sweater, dressier earrings and pretty shoes. Simple.
In my search for a dress for my son’s graduation and to pack on my travels, I came across quite a few that are perfect for many occasions. I’m sharing some of my favorites and hopefully there is a link to each one on the description should you want to buy or find out more information!
Michael Kors at Nordstrom
One of the day looks that is flattering on almost everyone is the shift dress and if it has a print you can pair it some terrific wedges or a bright clutch for a graduation. I’d skip a necklace and add some larger drop earrings. Love this Michael Kors.
Trina Turk

A sleeveless shift here from Trina Turk is paired with flesh tone pumps. Some bright thick bracelets would look great with this.

J Crew

I’m loving this J Crew dress which is currently on sale and also comes in a coral. You can glam this up for evening with silver accessories or make it more day wedding appropriate with strappy sandals, a bright clutch and fun earrings.

Laundry at Bloomingdales

Have to admit, I’m loving all the prints and florals this year.

Carmen Marc Valvo at Neiman Marcus

Tory Burch

Modcloth

Nordstrom

This above, would be very cute on a young teen or pre-teen.
J Crew

DVF at Nordstrom

The lace trend is pretty and feminine. This DVF dress is perfection and also comes in navy and white lace over grey.

Vince Camuto
Eliza J- Nordstrom
Warm colors are so attractive on most people…

Sue Wong
Alice + Olivia at Neiman’s

I’m trying to include some sleeved items for those gals that want them like above. This would look great on anyone.

Ralph Lauren

One shoulder looks are flattering on many body types!

BCBG

Colorblock Tank Shopbop
Loving the blue this year as well.

Kate Spade at Nordstrom

Maxis dresses can be cute, but for a formal wedding, you’ll need to add heels and a wrap along with dressier hair if you plan on wearing one. The fabric shouldn’t be t-shirt material if you are wearing it to a formal event.  Most maxis are beach and cover-up attire so keep that in mind and I don’t think I need to say here that flip-flops are not an option-unless it’s a beach wedding..Then anything goes!
Nordstrom

Lili Pulitzer at Bloomingdales

Patio Cross- Back dress – Banana Republic

Ralph Lauren at Nordstrom

This could be cute for a younger gal as well as a stylish mature lady…Don’t want to forget them.

Lili Pulitzer at Bloomingdales

Have fun whatever you do! Remember the fun people are always the most attractive no matter what they have on.

Do you have a go to you wear for weddings or do you shop for each occasion? Love to hear what all you ladies out there do!

Sweaters and Shorts

May 28, 2013 By kimwheeler No Comments

This time of the year, I’m ready for shorts and dresses. However, the weather can be flaky and days can fluctuate from warm to rainy and cool like we had this weekend in Northern California. The perfect solution is sweaters with shorts. I personally love this look.
I’m not talking the tacky cut-offs with raggedy edges and pockets sticking out -So Britney Spears ladies! Class up your shorts wardrobe and find some that are neither too short nor too tight. You don’t want them so long either..In fact a shorter length can sometimes hit at a more flattering spot on the leg than a longer short can, so try on many..

Loving the cable knit and penny loafers. Something about a sweater is just so cozy and yet the addition of shorts say Summer. It’s very East Coast where Summers in Maine and those regions can be very cool.

I’m not a huge Taylor Swift fan, but she looks very cute with these flats, little bag and sweater.

This Chanel sweater jacket looks great paired with relaxed shorts and perfect for a night out on Gwyneth Paltrow.

Kate Moss is known for wearing her cut-offs, but looks lovely in these classier shorts and cardigan.
My personal rule with shorts is always wear flats or a very low heel. There’s something about high heels and shorts that I find tacky. Pretty flat sandals or ballets are perfect.  (Being over 40, I am careful where I wear shorts. I wear them at the park, beach, shopping and running about. Otherwise, I default to skirts, especially when traveling.)
I love a V-neck boyfriend or slouchier sweater paired with shorts, long necklaces and flats for day and jeweled T-strap flat sandals for night. In fact some of the best sweaters are probably in your husband’s closet right now! If not, J Crew has some great ones here and here and here. I’ve even bought them in the guys departments in smaller sizes as well.
Olivia Palermo (above and below), is the shorts queen and wears them with everything.
With a sweater and your shorts you can stay cozy, but still keep your Spring mindset!!
What do you think? Do you have any opinions on shorts? Do you think they look okay on woman over 40? Tell me what you think!
Have a great week!

Green Team

October 18, 2012 By kimwheeler No Comments

They said oxblood was the color of the season. It may well be, but I can’t help noticing all the deep green tones that are turning up everywhere. Green is just one of those colors that seems to look good on everyone. It’s fabulous on brunettes, but equally as appealing on blondes and was made for redheads.
It’s gorgeous with gold accents and leopard.

Deepest green are perfect for Autumn and Winter.

Kate Middleton in what I think some call, “bottle green.”

Deep green and tortoise look so rich together. Tory Burch bag

How I want to dress for Fall!

Dorothy Draper collection
Love!!! Someday I’ll start collecting bakelite bracelets.

You can order vintage books by color via Retro Reading.

I particularly adore mixing of green shades.

Colored kitchens are getting very popular.

A Fortuny wrap from the 1920s. Can you believe how gorgeous this is?

I think green is a color that just makes people feel good!

Do you think you’re on the green team or not? 🙂

(A kind of a joke because I’m on our elementary school’s Green Team- and love it. – Totally different post of course!)

A Backstage Pass to Fall Trends..

September 24, 2012 By kimwheeler No Comments

Well, I left the home front behind Saturday morning and made my way to my first professional gig as a blogger! I was flattered to be included in Stanford Shopping Center’s blogger preview for their Fall fashion event, which is called Simon Fashion Now. I won’t lie and tell you I wasn’t totally stressed a bit about what to wear and more. Though after I met all the lovely fellow bloggers and the Simon people I was quite thrilled to be there!

Learning how they run it backstage from Jacque’.

We all loved their stylist’s Miu Miu sequin and stud tennis shoes!

After meeting everyone, we got a special behind the scenes look at the clothes, models and hair and make-up. We even got to peruse the outfits put together by their stylist, making notes of what we wanted for ourselves and taking pics.

We all loved this leather dress from Bloomingdales, which they showed with a white chiffon blouse underneath.

This coat from Rachel Roy was also very popular.

Anne Sage of The City Sage admiring the gold leather pants. And Jessica Ryzenberg, below of Ryzenberg On, checking out the racks backstage. As well as being nice, these ladies have amazing style blogs. You need to visit them!

Stylist Erica Sanae below also has a terrific site and Rommellyn with camera writes a blog called The Stunning Post.

And hey guess what I got to wear? I’m press, baby!!  No doing laundry today people.:)

First up we got to see the Design Wars fashion show from The Art Institute of California. It was Project Runway on a small scale. I loved seeing the student creations . There were a lot of very theatrical dresses. The winner was the dress with the full cream skirt and leather top.

The Bloomingdale’s runway presentation used many of our favorites from backstage racks.  The only thing this show was lacking was some happening music! I seriously love to hear some inspiring tunes during a fashion show. The items below all are from Bloomingdales. Some of the Fall/Winter trends I noticed on my favorites below..

Primary colors are deepening and paired with similar tones of the same hue. Mixing tones is so right now.

Peplums are still big.

Furla plastic satchel.

Leggings and layers.

Colored cords seem to have taken the place of colored jeans for Fall and in more muted versions of the primary colors.

Lots of tops and dresses with longer draped backs. Neon colors as a foil with black.

Black mixed with metallic tones and leather.

We loved this J brand jacket with leather sleeves. Wearing white jeans year round with wintery sweaters looks chic and seems to be the thing now.

Booties with dresses and skirts.

Tweeds and Chanel inspired jackets.

Men’s clothes have also seen some brightening. The dusky versions of primary tones look brilliant together. It’s a welcome change from the usual blue and browns.

Not sure if I love this mix, but he has a darling smile. My fellow bloggers agreed. 🙂

Loved this look on him.

Simon did a great job with the fun interactive events. One was Ready, Set, Style! Contestants from the audience competed in two teams, to style an outfit on a model in a few minutes.  Really fun to watch and two of my fellow bloggers, Erica and Jessica helped out the stylish gals from the audience.

Running..

The results below. Not bad for a few minutes!

My takeaways from this show.. Leather can look pretty as trim on silky dresses and paired with soft, sheer blouses. Adding a bit to your closet will look current. If you want look smart,  you need a pair of short booties to wear with dresses, skinny jeans and leggings, preferably with a wedge. I would also get a scarf, bag, dress or a standout coat in one of those deep teals, reds, magentas, or mustards that are so fun.  To top it off, a tweedy Chanel-inspired jacket to pair with distressed jeans and you are set for the season.  I  believe in just adding a few chic pieces to your closet is all you really need to do. You have to pick what you like and what flatters you.
Thanks to Simon Fashion for a wonderful day and getting local bloggers together. I truly feel so fortunate to have met so many inspiring and talented new friends.
Did this give you any inspiration for Fall and Winter?
Have a great week!

California Weekends- What to Pack for Carmel and Monterey

May 6, 2012 By kimwheeler 13 Comments

This eternally popular post is all about what to wear- and pack for a getaway to the Carmel/ Monterey area. It can be tricky as it’s a California coastal area, but more often than not can be cool, though sunny. As we are very casual in California and your key word for this trip – laid back luxe!

The original post on this was written in 2012, after a little getaway to Carmel to celebrate my husband’s birthday. It has become so popular I update it quarterly. As a Bay Area and Northern Cal gal we get there a lot, so I feel qualified to advise.

You’re going to love this area and if you pack the right things, enjoy it too. This updated post has some newer links and photos to help you plan a trip in 2023 and beyond.. Lots of inspiring looks for you to copy here too.

Carmel is one of the most gorgeous places on the planet and I am continually thrilled by its beauty on each trip.  I am so fortunate to live here in Northern California and be nearby. When I say Carmel, I also mean the whole Monterey Peninsula area, which encompasses Carmel by the Sea, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel Valley in the hills to the East.

You could be staying in the warm and sunny Carmel Valley, but will most likely end up at some point in the foggier and cooler town of Carmel, too. For this reason you need to pack for two climates!  I kid you not  If you don’t believe me try spending a day in town here and you will see how many Carmel sweatshirts are sold to tourists. It’s not unusual to see winter coats and sweaters worn here especially during summer time. Carmel Valley, up the road about 20 minutes from Carmel is a warm wine region and not unlike Napa and Sonoma. So you really have to think before packing.

Most of my visits to Carmel I have wandered around like Jennifer Aniston above, with sandals, yet burrowed up in a big sweater!

Carmel is a cosmopolitan place where people dress very well, but casual. Carmel Valley tends to be a horsier set where as Carmel by the Sea, is a little more luxe. Monterey where the aquarium and Cannery Row are, is super casual.

Bottom line…This is the capital of casual chic. People dress well, even though they are dressed down.

What to pack for a weekend in Carmel and Monterey. . .

White jeans.

Even in winter. They look great with heavy sweaters and pea coats.

Two I like.. this thicker white cropped pair, these very nice mid-rise jeans and these vintage straight ones

I love this look of Linda Wright and her daughter- both making white denim look chic in cool temps..Look at Linda’a Instagram for a lot of inspirational looks with white denim..

Other white denim looks that could work for Carmel…Dressier here like below..

Alternatively, khaki or black jeans ..

Black jeans are versatile -with sandals or boots and you can dress them up for dinner..And these classic straight legs from Frame are a versatile choice that will feel great too.

Blue jeans of course…

I love this relaxed version and this one .

I love the mix of straw bag and sweater – and sweater plus sandals..A little summer and winter together works by the sea.

A Woven or Straw Tote..

I love this classic straw bag with a leather handle by J. Crew – the perfect tote to pair with your sweater and for travel.

I also love this medium market tote by Mersea  ( also comes in a small) ..

This woven leather bag is another casual tote that’s luxe looking.

Button down shirt in white or denim for day.

Great for layering with chunky sweaters. Can also double a a cover-up by the pool if it’s longer.

A great shirt here and this  classic white button down here.

Comfy flats.

I always have a pair of ballet flats and a cute pair of tennis shoes.

Ballet flats are another good thing to have on hand and a good a sneaker alternative. Love the look and shape of these Sam Edelmans,  and also here which come in a few colors..and also these classics by Tory Burch  and these are a modern update on the ballet flat with many pretty shades

I love a good white sneaker

Vejas are so California classic and neutral in all their variations. Perfect for up and down the hills of Carmel and a day of walking. Also more Vejas here and many styles of them here.

And these New Balance are quite popular..and also a neutral.

Flip flops for the pool or beach.

I have this pair of black rubber  Tory Burch that have lasted years. They make everything look California casual chic and upgraded. Great to wear to the spa or breakfast as well.

Tory Burch Black rubber Flip Flops

I also like this new style  Tory Burch has a take on the rainbow flip-flop of the 70’s she has in many colors and the soft pink is pretty..

Tory Burch Rainbow style flip flops

I also have bought two pairs of her Cloud Miller Sandals that feel great on..

If you want to go a little more luxe this Gucci pair is very Carmel…

I would pass on heeled sandals for evenings.  Streets are hilly in Carmel by the Sea.  Heels will look ridiculous during the day and are impractical with the hills here and the beach.

Cozy cardigan or wrap

You need this for cool days and around the room as a robe over your night clothes. Any cashmere wrap is also perfect for that and layering!  A wrap similar to below..

Even warmer light quilted or puffer jacket, moto jacket, blazer or trench to layer. These Herno puffers are gorgeous and very popular in Carmel. If you need something less pricey J. Crew has these cute quilted puffer jackets too.

Here I am a few years ago with my son wearing a scarf and my trench coat in late summer! A few trench options here at J Crew, and a cute look here at Anthro.

A cashmere wrap is a wonderful idea for this area to ward the chill off in evenings and for an extra layer. This one by J.Mclaughin is lovely and will be a travel piece you can count on wherever you go.

A Swimsuit

I always prefer a tankini or a bikini with a rash guard to layer. This is a flattering tank I love and another by Tory is a classic and beautifully made suit and this is universally flattering and and so is this from J.Crew – so cute.

Cute cover-up & hat

I love this shirt style  coverup for the pool or spa if there is one, or the beach. I take a felt rancher hat I always take to Carmel and this is a similar and comes in a lot of colors.

For dinners dress warmly.

Almost all evenings are cool in Carmel, once the fog rolls in.  A pretty blouse paired or soft sweater with nice denim is the norm. I’ve never felt warm enough to wear a dress to dinner, but if you do, bring a wrap or light trench or coat.

I think you can’t go wrong with a black pant/ sweater combo for dinners – chic and warm.

A chunky cable-knit or similar sweater. Cute with shorts- or jeans, depending on the day.

 A casual skirt or shorts

If should the weather turn warm. One of my favorite looks on a warm day in Carmel is denim shorts and a long-sleeved T or sweater. Perfect for places by the coast where the weather is sunny yet cool.

Cozy pants and soft T-shirt

Great for lounging around the room. PJs could also work. I do like to have something cute and warm with me to wear to breakfast without getting dressed for the day yet.
Yoga pants or leggings and a wrap sweater could work with a soft T for breakfast. Add boots to your leggings and a swingy sweater or poncho and you have an outfit…

A nice travel layering piece, especially for Carmel is  a cardigan like this cute option or a this cashmere poncho

Boots

They are worn year-round in Carmel. I didn’t pack mine last August and was so mad at myself. All the gals wear them in summer too. Of course people have Uggs, but a classic tall black boot like this, in black looks chic and preppy too.

New Year’s Sparkle

December 29, 2011 By kimwheeler No Comments

Tory Burch at a party earlier this year.  Vogue.com

What are you wearing for New Year’s Eve?  Are you going to a fancy party or just hitting the couch to watch the ball drop? The latter was what we did for many years when our kids were very small. Now, we have been lucky for the last few years to get together with fun friends whose kids are similar ages. The kids have a blast waiting for midnight and we adults dress up a bit and ring in the the year with good pals. With the kind of party we are attending we get sparkly, but still dress comfy. We’re talking jeans and cute tops with a fun accessory or two. I’ll try to  bring it and wear something that feels fun! I am right now contemplating wearing a ruffly black blouse, jeans and black motorcycle boots or a sequin sweater tank top in grey and some skinny dark pants from J Crew. Or maybe I’ll go shopping…

Here’s a few stylish ideas.
Love this if I was going to a fancy party. Michael Kors via Vogue.com.

What about a cute sequin skirt and a soft long sleeve sweater?  I would love this with flats or boots. With heels you’ll look like you’re trying too hard. Classy vs. crassy if you know what I mean.  Less can be more. Nordstrom.com

Hey, even easier, this is a dress. Like the relaxed appeal. Nordstrom.com

I’m loving one-shouldered tops. This Rachel Zoe top is cute with jeans.  Add a fabulous earring or cuff bracelet. Nordstrom.com
Simple and elegant. Love this blouse especially. Hair up would look cute with this ruffled collar. Vogue.com

Pretty pale look from Club Monaco. Do you feel like a bit of time travel?  I’d be channeling some fabulous British drama like, ” Passage to India”, or something in this. Oops wrong party! Darn.

A more casual top with sparkles from Nordstrom.com. I’d go for an authentic Northern California look and add some cute ripped jeans and keep the hair natural as shown. If you’re entertaining at home, go barefoot if you dare and currently have a good pedicure status. 🙂
Speaking of pedis you might have fun wearing this… Rainbow Connection by OPI.
If your outfit is not sparkly try to find a fun bracelet or a glittery purse to go along. You shouldn’t be all  glitter, just one or two pieces. If your outfit is already shimmering, maybe just one or none. This is one time adding a bright red or dark pink lip applied perfectly can look so right. Remember to keep the rest of your face clean and just do the lip for a modern look. Like this look below.

I love this $20 clutch from Nordstrom.com

Sequin and bead clutches from Club Monaco
How about this pave link bracelet? J Crew.com too.
Club Monaco
Tasha earrings from Nordstrom again.  If you’re going to wear earrings as your main bling then go big or go home!

Loving this $58 jacket from the juniors department. Nordstrom .com Perfect topper to keep you glamourous but warm. At least here in Nor Cal. Sorry if you are in Chicago, this is probably not going to cut it.

Speaking of accessories, one that screams New Year’s Eve is the fascinator!  If you don’t already know, fascinators are all the rage now thanks to the Duchess of Cambridge, (Kate Middleton), who wears them to many of her formal events instead of a hat. A fascinator is a headband with feathers or often a small hat attached. They are the perfect sassy addition to a sparkly New Years’ ensemble. My talented friend, Meilei creates them and I was so lucky to grab one myself for my New Year’s Eve. Fascinators say you are ready to party and they are not for the faint of heart!
The Duchess in one of her fascinators.

Meilei modeling one of my favorites.
Love this one.
Meilei with some of her fun creations.

If you have never worn one, then you have no idea how much fun you are missing! To contact Meilei, you can email her at mrenns@yahoo.com.

I’d love to hear how you all ring in the New Year. Leave me comment and tell me about it.
Hope you have fun and look fabulous!
Kim:)

Fall Style !

October 11, 2011 By kimwheeler No Comments

Bracelet piling- very big this year. Short painted nails also look very chic and fresh.

Now that October and cooler weather has arrived, I thought I’d throw out there a few style pictures for inspiration. In case you don’t follow the fashion rags, here’s a capsule of the latest trends for Fall.  I don’t know about you, but I enjoy seeing what’s hot and how women on the street are working it into their own looks!  These pics are from Tommy Ton of Style.com. Enjoy!
The faux fur vest seems quite big this year, ( literally!)
Love the jacket and clutch with tassel. Aren’t tassels fab?
Check out her colors and more bracelet piling!
Dots are big too. Check out the bright clutch and again the bracelets.

Bracelets again and mixing metals.
Floppy 70s hats are apparently back. The trench is still a good investment and animal prints are still  hot.
She’s working the animal prints and the bracelet thing.
Capes look fabulous darlings. I just want to be her! I had a cape in 3rd grade.

Citrus people! Embrace it. Drink your orange juice!
She’s adorable. Love the color-blocking and her shades. Pony looks cool too.
More floppy hats. You could steal this from your kids’ Indiana Jones costume.

Stripes are still chic and wearing your purse as a clutch. I know if I wore this I’d get Bee remarks from my family…

She’s working the stripes into her Fall.
Love her trench and scarf.  Notice how she ties it? It’s all in the tying and it’s got to look like you did it carelessly, but of course if it looks good you didn’t!  Got that trench wearers?

More brights and chunky jewelry. I’m digging the ring.
Black tights are back in a big way and color-blocking with black is too.
Black tights and some pops of bright color are on my shopping list. I don’t think you need a new wardrobe, but just a few little pieces to make it fresh and current. I’m going to try my nails short and dark with a ton of bracelets too. What do you love or hate for Fall?

Another dark morning, but trying to brighten the k Another dark morning, but trying to brighten the kitchen up with some blues and greens! I think we need to bring the sunshine in ourselves. I did a little field trip and braved the heavy rain yesterday with my friend Elaine to visit the new @westelm in Campbell. It’s nice having a home store you can drive up to and park nearby. I bought a few new glasses for my shelves and a pretty decanter. Will share more about this new shop on my stories.

Stay cozy today. ☔️

Here we are again. More families destroyed by the Here we are again. More families destroyed by the inability of our nation to take a stand against the gun lobby, manufacturers and politicians supporting them. Little children and their teachers gone. I don’t want to hear about freedoms.. Those are faux freedoms gun culture enables.

What about the freedom to go to school and feel safe without being gunned down? The freedom to go to the grocery store, the movies, a festival or a concert, a nightclub without fear of being killed? We all are in danger in all places. States with strong gun laws are at the mercy of the states with the weakest laws, as we have no walls between us.

We don’t need to live this way. We just need to get together and stop the madness. NO OTHER first world nation lives lives this way with guns and weapons meant for war, easily had by anyone who wants them. People are afraid to vacation here. It’s only a matter of time before every one of us is touched by this unrestricted gun culture. Let’s stop being complacent. We must absolutely demand our politicians use their power to change this. The Tennessee Representative for this district sent out a holiday card with his family holding automatic weapons…like it’s some kind of joke. These are children’s lives. And what about those who are left behind losing a loved one or experiencing this horror and surviving?

This photo from @shannonrwatts - please follow her. This is a child today being brought to a reunification center for parents awaiting news. ☹️

I know some of you only want happy posts, but can we agree we aren’t doing enough here and we all need to take part?

Call and donate to your local politicians who take a stand on gun control. Know where all of them stand on guns and share it. If you can, donate to those in other states who are fighting the good fight and need the support. ❤️

I love this country and I really want change.

Well after all this weather, and so much indoor ti Well after all this weather, and so much indoor time, I’m officially sick of everything and I am ready to give the home a little refresh. Homegoods and TJMaxx have some great spring items and a promotion with items from France, Italy, etc. They can be a good source for outdoor pots, new pillows, rugs and decorative bits. It’s good time to find a ‘few’ emphasis on few, new things for the home. They carry unique items, many one offs, but you have to be a discerning shopper.. What to look for and what to avoid on this little clip.

I’ll be taking more about how to shop smart at these sort of places on the upcoming blog as well. What’s been your experience at these stores? I have had good luck and bad and I think you have to be smart about what you choose and don’t fill a home with these things.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on shopping there. More tips from my last trip there on stories and saved on shopping tips.

I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room today as my builder @mikemccloudconstruction shared it too. I still love the way it came out! I had saved many inspiration pictures of how I wanted this to look. I was lucky Mike helped me make this happen. A good builder who listens and has ideas as well, helps so much. I’m sharing some of the extra details up close.

I loved this blue sort of organic watery tile for a pool bath. I also knew I wanted an open shelf for all the pool towels so people could grab them on the way out the door. The @serenaandlily mirror definitely has that nautical almost porthole, sort of look and picked up the unfinished oak color. I used an RH pendant light and the sink is Victoria and Albert. The counter is from a slab of @vadaraquartz that I spilt and used in the laundry as well as the boy’s bath. I choose an inexpensive cement tile for this space and the connecting laundry/mud room which works with drippy pool feet! It’s been almost four years and all still looking great!

DM me if anyone wants details I left out! I thought I did a post on this, but maybe not! I need to do that with all the baths.

Hope you all have a good week and get some nature in the first day of spring!

How beautiful is this? We are the embodiment of lo How beautiful is this? We are the embodiment of love in our actions. This is a wonderful account and @yung_pueblo ‘s book ‘Lighter’ is top of the NYTimes list too.

Happy Monday. 💛
Are you watching the @bnpparibasopen ? I just got Are you watching the @bnpparibasopen ? I just got back from three whirlwind days with pals and we had a ball. It was so good to be in the sun and and warmth -with snow capped California mountains as a backdrop. We went in the beginning part of the tournament which we always do, and got to see Andy Murray, Sabalenka, Zverev, Raducanu, and so many fantastic other players. We basically eat, slept and breathe tennis for two days straight and we loved it! You can still catch play on the @tennischannel 🎾

I will share another Reel of all the stylish people.. Something about tennis brings out the sharpest dressers and there was excellent people watching.

If you love tennis, this is a bucket list tournament. They call the fifth slam and it’s getting crazy popular so plan a year ahead of you want to go. We reserved our hotel that was walking distance a year ago. More tips on my BNP post that I update each year.

I separated the sectional and sort of like it apar I separated the sectional and sort of like it apart. This RH couch is a LOT of maintenance and can look pretty deflated after a weekend of hanging out. In hindsight, I’d buy a couch that does not require so much fluffing and cushion alternating. I snapped this pic because it was one of the times I had the pillows looking nice on it. You also need a lot of pillows to not get swallowed up by it. I call it the great white.

The local RH actually has a cleaning team that steams and fluffs their couch and I’ve seen them before the shop opens. I found it hard to get reviews on this couch before buying because RH does not have them online and if you notice they don’t do social media… so I’m just putting it out there. I will share what I love here, but I think it helps to be transparent about what is a disappointment too.
