Summer time

Getting Back in the Summer Mindset

June 27, 2016 By kimwheeler No Comments

Hi friends I’m back. We were away on a European adventure and before that both my sons graduated – one from high school and the other from middle school.  Leading up to that I was consumed with the year end celebrations and also preparing for the trip which we insanely planned just three days after the graduations! To say I lost my mind a bit would not be an understatement. I couldn’t even think about my blog and when we returned from our holiday I was in a jet-lag and laundry induced haze. I’m just coming out of it and I plan to share about the trip and more summer-themed posts.

I just LOVE summer and the summer way of thinking. I relish the time to recharge, relax, read books, reorganize, de-clutter, and take stock and sometimes just do nothing, but watch the hummingbirds in my yard with a cup of tea. Best of all, are the days that unfold with no plans. Maybe we’ll get frozen yogurt or do a craft or bike to lunch. The rest of summer we will take a few road trips, do an annual camping trip to the Sierras with the whole family and then get our oldest ready to go to college, which will be a big adjustment for us all. I just can’t wrap my head around it yet.

Most of all I look forward to the things that make summer seem like a little vacation each day-swimming, popsicles, bike rides, fruit from everyone’s yards, growing my own tomatoes (which are almost ripe!), lots of alfresco dinners, happy hours with friends, family movie and game nights with the boys and reading as many books as I can happily squeeze in.

Thanks to my dad, I have some wonderful tomatoes coming up. He starts them all from seed.

Artichokes are quintessentially Californian and we ate them and grew them when I was young.

Recently, I read an article about how the childhood summer of old has gone away. Kids are expected to use summer as a time to get ahead in school, camp after camp so they are not bored, (god forbid) and internships and pricey summer enrichment programs for the older ones.

When I read that I feel fortunate to have had a 1970’s childhood of summers doing squat. I think I remember doing 2 or 3 summer camps over all the years of my childhood. The rest was spent flying around the neighborhood on my banana bike, making homemade popsicles, water balloon fights, lemonade stands, visiting the library each week for piles of books, and a lot of the time watching cartoons, Gilligan’s Island repeats and often just watching clouds and making daisy chains. That’s the truth and though we were often bored and sometimes got into mischief, we were free-ranging big time and I am afraid kids today just don’t get that.

One of my favorites of the youngest trying s’mores camping.

Did it harm us? No. Did we go to Stanford? No, but we grew up contented, happy, self-sufficient and able to appreciate that life is not a race, but an adventure daily. We found what we love to do by messing around with stuff, and success without being daily soldiers to a planned existence during our summers.

We scrounged money for bike rides to Quick Stop for Slurpees and brown bags filled with Jolly Ranchers, Bubble Yum and other tooth-rotting gobs. We bartered for Archie and Veronica or Richey Rich comic books, made sling shots and ramps to fly our bikes off of and rip our knees up. I remember having never ending series of band-aids on knees that never healed. We had sunburned noses and we painted our own frosted pink toenails. Mom never worried where we were. We were at a friends or in the neighborhood and we always came home around dinnertime. Mostly it was for BBQ burgers and jello on summer nights. Mom would try to get us to eat an iceberg lettuce salad with Thousand Island dressing and toward the end of the summer my dad’s corn and green beans would start coming up and we’d have those for a few weeks.

Parents don’t feel guilty if your kids are bored, streaming shows or dribbling snow cones syrup all over and you are walking with sticky feet throughout the house, this is summer in it’s element. Savor this that can only happen in summer months. I’m trying to kick back and put my feet up, let the dishes sit in the sink and the food stick to the counter. Let the mess happen. My wise 99 year old grandma says that there will always be time to clean the house. Enjoy the sun tea, blooming flowers, the cut grass smell, the BBQ and the gooeyness of melted s’mores. As my neighbor Kim said this week when I announced we are making snow cones for the neighborhood, ‘Summer has arrived!’

Here’s to enjoying every minute!

By the way, I’m seeing lists on Pinterest like 100 ways to help your kids have a 70’s summer. I’m afraid that defeats the purpose people if you’re ticking off boxes. Perhaps though some people just can’t imagine going a day without a plan. Kids who are used to being told what to do cannot cope. Well start by doing it yourself and give them some space. You might just find you all learn how to live in the moment and let the days unravel before you! Don’t throw this opportunity away. They’ll be busy and free summers will be a distant past.

I’ll be back more often with little tidbits as I am trying something new, blogging more about less, but the trip posts are coming too.

I’d love if you shared what summer is to you. I know some of you have come from different places and everyone has their own unique summer memories.

Kim

Pismo Beach camping 1997 with our first car purchase a green Land Rover. Loved that car and kept it until it fell apart. We also never got the sand out, hint- don’t take a new car to the sand dunes! Duh.

All these photos are my own originals from summer’s past.

This Last Week of Summer & Other Chat

August 11, 2014 By kimwheeler No Comments

Happy Monday friends. Just checking in with you all… How’s your summer? Still savoring?

Well, we have officially a week left if you go by the school calendar! That’s not much. What the heck happened to starting after Labor Day?

We did a little day trip to Carmel yesterday. My boys spent some time building sand sculptures.

I spent some time holding the blanket down, and reading. Twas so nice.

We had lunch at my favorite restaurant, Casanova.

I highly recommend a stop there for the Soup de Jour and homemade bread and butter. It’s especially cozy and warming after a foggy beach walk.

Yesterday cream of artichoke with spinach was the soup. That with fresh olive bread was AAAMAZING!!

Did I ever mention they make the soup in small batches and bring a copper pot out and ladle it into your bowl??? Where else do you get that? I know I’ve gushed about this place before.

Loads of charm at Casanova.

Don’t be intimidated by it’s small size from the front. It’s a veritable maze of quaint rooms and patios behind the front cottage. It’s easy to pop in for lunch. Dinner may need a reservation.

We also have been trying to enjoy as many dinners at home alfresco.

Eating outside always feels like a special night.

The boys love it too and stay a little longer at the table which we like. We just discovered a new favorite wine, Cuvee Los Gatos, from our hometown winery, Testarossa. The 2011 Chardonnay is wonderful and try it if you can. It can be bought at the winery, but our local Lunardi’s store has it currently. It’s around $24. We are so spoiled by good wines that we rarely pay that much, but this is worth it.

The tomatoes have liked the unusually hot summer we have been having.

I can’t say the same!! I miss our 80s and high 70s with cool nights.

We did get some summer rain which was so nice and unusual.
I’m really hoping for some real weather this fall and winter.  We barely had any last year.
On the bright side we swam so much this summer. Not a day went by that my kids didn’t use the pool.
They will kill me for using this, but I am anyway. 😀
My oldest Jackson is going to be a junior next week. Unbelievable. Hard to comprehend.
Seems like just the other day I put this photo in a frame from a trip to Pt Reyes.

Looking at the sizes of them I guess it was a few years ago actually.
How is it they grow so much in that 12-15 year old span? Your not noticing it and then you see a photo, and your baby has become Lurch!
Argh!!

On a lighter note, still trying to keep the Hawaii vibe from vacation alive in the home.

Hawaii has a lot of these vintage postcards. I tuck them in mirrors and on pinboards.

I’m going to try to have my guide to my Big Island favorites out this Thursday. I don’t know what happened to my blogging time this summer, but it’s been weekly at best and once school starts I’ll have more time for more posts.

Keeping it real though, a lot just didn’t happen this summer.

You know all those plans to clean out closets, pantries, and garages? It never got done and it sure isn’t this last week.  I have however threatened my 12 year old hoarder with no new school supplies until he purges his room and desk!!

The pets and the man cave..aka le garage, have gotten some quality time though. Don’t look at this disaster with workbench projects, (we are building a robot apparently), gaming devices and everything else.

I just close my eyes when I walk through!

When I get aggravated at the slacktitude, (my husband’s word), I try to remind myself they’ll be cranking out school work soon enough. (I hope!)

Yes, back to school, it’s not all BAD! I’ll have a bit more time for myself. I’m looking forward to fall and fall clothes. I can’t wait to clean out the closet and look at what I can do with the old wardrobe.

Just popped into Anthropologie in our town and fell in love with this…

This Bloomfield Tee is so easy and I love the front pockets and colors.

Florals are still having their moment and apparently pastels are going to be happening for fall and winter as well. We are talking Easter colors, according to Vogue and others!! Should be interesting…

So maybe this could be a cute transitional piece?

One more fashion note, I did buy a tote already for fall. It’s easy for running around. I love having a bag to throw my shopping in as I go about the day. It’s light and perfect for travel too. I don’t know why, but light totes are my new favorite and I just don’t see the appeal in the heavy and structured bags anymore. It’s either these or a wristlet. Okay sometimes a clutch. I’m enjoying streamlining right now.

What do you think of totes?

I love the brown and black combo and the polka dot lining. It’s called the Kerrington Shopper and it’s from Tory Buch Fall 2014 line. I was in the store the other day there are too many cute things to count. Love the whole fall clothing line and it coordinates with these bags.
I want to buy the small coin wallet in polka dot to match when I can.

I’m wearing the tote with my white outfit for Adrienne of The Rich Life’s How I Wear My White post.  Some chic styling ideas for wearing white. She’s also got a fun series started with videos of makeup tips with a very talented makeup artist, Veronica. Something to check out if you want to freshen up your look and get a new visage for fall.

I’m done meandering here and if you are still with me I’ll be back later this week to share my fun visit to California designer Trina Turk’s digs in Burlingame and the fabulous things she has for fall wardrobe and also for the home.

Happy week!

What I Did On My Summer Vacation

August 21, 2013 By kimwheeler No Comments

It’s back. School year has descended upon us once again. Sigh. I have a bit of angst usually about this time. Part of me is sad the lazy days of summer are at an end. I didn’t miss cracking the whip on homework, making lunches, or being chauffeur. It was so good to have a break from all that.

However, there are some benefits to the school routine- namely more free time! That’s otherwise known as,”me time,” people, and let’s be frank it’s been scarce! Really scarce.
I foolishly had plans to paint, organize and redecorate. Yeah right. My poor blog has suffered as well.  Time just escaped me. After my big reunion, we fell fully into school ready mode, orientations and all that jazz. I did begin my big fall purge where I basically throw out all the things I can while no one is looking!! But I digress. . .
Deep breath, exhale.
We have had some lovely 76 degree weather for a large part of summer.

Oodles of time to do nothing much. Exactly as it should be.

Have you read about the latest studies that show more sun exposure actually makes you smarter? My secret weapon against those moms who put their kids in achievement academies all summer. 😀

Much outdoor dining.
Alfresco nibbles and wine tasting at Testarossa, our in town winery. They have a fabulous patio among old oaks and wonderful wines.  If you are in Los Gatos don’t miss it!

Fun with sisters, Unathi and Leia and their new puppy Ramona.

Camps. Grif and buddy Nicholas gearing up for a night hike.

                                Road trips

A wonderful family reunion in Discovery Bay given by my Aunt Wendy.

The kids had a blast with all the toys they have.

Quality cousin time.

Camping!

Visits to one of my favorite spot in Northern California, Pinecrest Lake! It wouldn’t be summer without a trip here with my brother Peter his wife Line and their three kids.

Quality time with all the family members…

Apparently my home puts a few to sleep!

Gardening was another summer joy and thanks to my dad’s help I had the best tomatoes ever this year!

This neighborhood cat, Luke is ubiquitous around these parts. He’s my garden buddy too.

My youngest made this bean bag chair/tower his spot in the garage- aka boy cave. Lots of slacking off in there as well.

I wasn’t stressing too much about the downtime as both tried some things they never did before. The eldest worked as a assistant at the local youth science program. Some grunt work like making slime  and untangling first grader’s fishing lines, and the like was his assignment.

Otherwise he was addicted to Reddit, gaming and swimming- or sort of…

The youngest made a four day Scout backpacking trek into the Sierras on the Pacific Crest Trail.  While I wasn’t so crazy about him sleeping without a tent and carrying a very heavy pack, after I saw the photos, I knew it was a once in a lifetime trip.

Luckily, my husband got to go along and took these beautiful photos.

I’m going to frame this one I think.

They hiked to three different lakes- The Dardanelles, Round Lake and Meiss Lake and made camp each night. That’s him and friends Jinyu and Liam packing out. They had some big packs for 11 year olds.

The Sierras has the most gorgeous and diverse terrain. Almost made me want to go too. (Then I think about the bathroom situation and the sleeping in the open.)

Apparently last week was a perfect time to go. Weather was not hot and the colors are starting to look like fall a bit already. It quickly gets too cool to camp in the Sierras at night come later September. The window is pretty short.

The granite lakes are just too gorgeous.

Finally, I had to share some exciting news about my dear husband Max and his start-up. I told you a while back about his decision to try his hand at beginning his own company. Their product finally launched in it’s finished version a few weeks ago and it’s been doing terrific! Yea. It’s been a ton of work and I’m so proud of him! And all of us for living through it! (Only kidding.:)

It’s called MYND and it’s a calendar app that is really smart. It’s accesses your calendars and brings you a wonderful visual version of it each day along with reminders of appointments, when to leave to give you drive time, estimated traffic and weather, even maps right a touch of your finger. Even myself, a strictly paper and pen diehard, am loving the look of my day view and it’s managing of my crud. It’s also saved me a few times by telling me to leave NOW to get somewhere on time. My estimates can sometimes be just a bit off… (Friends laughing here.)

Myndcalendar.com
Seriously cool and it’s free right now in the App store. You click on the link above to get on the MYND site. So check it out if you have an IPhone and hopefully it will soon be available for others.   I’d love to hear what you think of it!

Hey, it’s not even Labor Day yet! There’s still time to complete that summer bucket list!

My son Griffin’s below.

Here’s to squeezing a little bit more summer in!

Back soon with the Netherlands and Germany leg of my travels.

My Summertime Bucket List

June 14, 2013 By kimwheeler No Comments

My youngest son and his friends are making Summer Bucket Lists and it’s very sweet. I love the happy start of Summer and all it’s possibilities just swirling about in my head… Ah, the potential of it! I thought I’d make my own Summer list.. I’d love to hear some of yours as well!
On my list. . .

Getting my toes pretty and wearing my sandals everywhere I can..Don’t you love these retro Salt-water sandals? I don’t know about you, but growing up in 1970’s California this is all we wore. Colors were either  red, navy, white or brown. No toe protection for flying feet and yes many a toe were skinned.

Biking as many places as I can around town. Getting misted by a nearby sprinkler adds bonus points! Already biked to lunch with the sons to our town’s hot dog and malt shop. 🙂

Love to look as cute as Garance Dore above photo by her Habitually Chic boyfriend.

Many bike trips to the library and lots of lazy afternoons reading with a glass of ice tea on the patio.

Repeat this daily! Let this be your Summer mantra.

Don’t forget to smell the lavender and all the other lovelies blooming. Fill your home. Right now I’ve got a whole bouquet of gardenia next to my bed courtesy of my pal Jen’s garden and it’s heaven. Making dried lavender sachets tied with ribbon is a fun a activity for the kids as well.
Beach days!

         One word: naps!

At least one road trip is in my future. I make playlists for each of my trips so I can relive my vacation  when I hear the songs again! So fun.

Pack up my “dream car” this white Defender and head out.. Yes I suppose a Defender is a thing not a moment, so forget I said that. . .
Hey did I mention I like the ones with the snorkels?

I will consume as much mint, basil, figs and watermelon as humanly possible.

                               Alfresco baby!

Pup tents under the stars…Or in the garage a few hours later…”Mom, we heard noises.”

I hope to get to two of my favorite Northern California spots- Pinecrest Lake and Lake Tahoe. I love being with the mountains, the smell of the pine trees and time with my whole family.

Still looking for my dream hat that covers enough, looks stylish and doesn’t look like Darth Vader…(You know what I’m talking about? Some scary sun visors out there!)

Picnics and croquet! Croquet tournaments -even better.

Badminton! Net or not…

Poolside with a hat and book. A little shade would be nice. My husband laughs because my optimal temperature is 79 and I would prefer it to stay that as much as possible. Thank you so much.

A little romance? Just saying..Isn’t this the cutest?

At least one boat ride across a lake. .  Did I mention I do have a tiny fear of boats?
I think I can do very small lakes however.

                             Beach walks!

I’d love to have a retro pool party!

Let’s have guys in white shoes and mint jackets, girls with big hair loud prints…That Tequila song playing in the background. This is so my childhood. Anyone still got a cool swim cap? 😀

Okay sorry off track here..,but the umbrellas really were cute weren’t they? (Slim Aarons’ photos)

I need to watch some of my favorite chick flicks again like, “It’s Complicated.”

And I’ll be thrilled if any of my men here at home will watch the original, “A Room With A View,” with me. I am still enchanted by this movie after 25 years with it’s fantastic characters, and views of Italy and England. Based on the E.M. Forester novel it’s a great Summer read as well.

Best movie kiss ever.

A young Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith before she became the dowager of Downton.

Travels to new places near and far.

Exploring the parks of the world..

or appreciating stuffed Eiffel Towers while wearing chocolate crepes

Trains, planes and automobiles! I love the romance of travel.
Let’s do this!
Now tell me all about your Summer bucket lists!

School Daze Screeches to a Halt..

May 31, 2013 By kimwheeler No Comments

Grif and buddies Nicolas and Liam in colonial garb.

Its almost the last week of school… This week just about put me over the edge. As my friend Kim said, weeks like these, you wake up hyperventilating. Really. Why does it all have to get crammed in at the last minute?

Boot Camp

Last week it was School Picnic and Boot Camp, Open House Night, Colonial Days and a Fifth Grade Music Concert that we failed to get the notice about… Yes, he survived. All for the fifth grader these activities. I forgot to add Bike Safety Night too, and that the big state report was due along with treats to share state related to class..We had Maine so it was blueberries in dixie cups for 30. He remembered about that 9:00 p.m. the night before of course.

Grif and classmate Seraphina on way to school for Colonial Days. Our Jack Sparrow Halloween jacket has served us well!

This week it started with a class water gun party that they earned. He had to bring treats to share and a water squirter (of course none of ours are to be found and new had to be bought),  electronic gadgets could be brought to class and a change of clothing for those going to after school rehearsal for the Beatles chorus.. Yes, they planned the upper grades chorus show for this week. Not sure who made that decision…

Goofing around at the chorus concert with neighbor and friend Abby.

Usually its been a few weeks earlier. Sorry, but even the Beatles can’t revive the checked out kids.. Chorus practices this week after school until 6 and shows Thursday and Friday. Big book report due today. Tuesday night was a special Scouts meeting and Wednesday night was the big picnic and music show for incoming fifth graders at the middle school.. We dragged over to that to catch a few tunes after the chorus rehearsal.. Almost forgot Tuesday was dress like another era day and at 7:45 that morning we were trying to recreate Richey Cunningham here…

Now we just have to get through next week’s trip on Monday to mini-golf and water-slides, Tuesday is something-forget now. Wednesday is the picnic for all graduating fifth graders at the park, and finally graduation. Whew. I made it   Oops, we made it through. He is our last one at elementary. I dearly love our school, but I have been there for 11 years with the two boys. I think I’m ready for middle school and less parent involvement! Oh wait piano recital on Sunday after..

Notice I haven’t mentioned the ninth grader? The first year of high school is just about over and like everyone said it flew, literally whipped by. I’m starting to believe what they say about high school going really fast and it makes me a bit sad. He has already checked out. Seriously. After starting so enthused. things are falling between the cracks worryingly. I have heard this is a ninth grade boy thing and that they are done and burnt out by this time. I hope that is it..On a bright note he did bring home a gorgeous table crafted in wood shop class.

I’m working on getting a few things lined up for them for Summer. It’s a fine balance to get them doing some fun activities, but letting them chill and enjoy the pleasures of Summer. My best memories are lazying about swimming pools, riding bikes with my pals around the neighborhood, popsicles and lemonade stands and Lake Tahoe.  I don’t want them to miss just being kids and the feeling of no schedule. That only happens for a short part of their lives.. With that attitude they would say we may not be Stanford material, but I think we are okay with that. I’d rather have happy kids than perfect kids….

On that note, here’s the best thing I read this week. A blog some friends shared on Facebook. This mom gets real about the end of the school year and I just want to hug her.. Read this is you need a smile and some perspective!

http://jenhatmaker.com/blog/2013/05/30/worst-end-of-school-year-mom-ever

Have a good weekend and if you are a parent you are almost there!!

xx

Do you love @rails beautiful California clothing? Do you love @rails beautiful California clothing? I don’t know what your weekend plans are, but on Saturday the new Rails at Stanford is having a fun event with 20% off, light bites, and a little gift with purchase..

I’ll be there for a few hours to help you pull together looks for summer or shop for a Mother’s Day gift - maybe for yourself?

If you haven’t been to a Rails store, they are so inspiring and have the whole collection for women and men. It’s great to see the clothes up close and how gorgeous they are.

Please pop by if you are at Stanford Shopping Center and say hi! I would love to meet some of you. I’ll be there 11-12:30, but the event is on all day and the Rails team is so great!

Maybe a fun day out to shop with a friend or your mom and have lunch after at Stanford?

Looking forward to this and meeting some of you!

Oh little PSA on a key piece for your spring and s Oh little PSA on a key piece for your spring and summer wardrobe- the small jacket! These little pieces will be the workhorse of your wardrobe and are hugely flattering. They give you a pretty line and are so much better than a soft cardigan as they define our shoulders, slim, and give us a tinier waist! They’re fantastic over the summer dress or skirt too.

I have a nice collection of these in my closet and if you don’t stop by the blog tomorrow… It’s May’s Signature Style and @cindyhattersley and I will be talking Summer Wish Lists and I’ll have some of my picks of small jackets and more good things on my wish list!

By the way I keep adding captions on top, save and they go away.. I had to add these at the bottom.. Frustrating!
