Weekend Meanderings- Cool Xmas Stockings, Men’s Holiday Gift Ideas, and Faux Trees

December 2, 2022 By kimwheeler 24 Comments

On this weekend’s meander..men’s holiday gift ideas, some fresh ideas in Christmas stockings, my new faux tree, a wonderful local floral design studio and more..

Well it’s been a busy week and I kind of hit the ground running this month getting two trees up, which is not the norm for me, but I was in a holiday home tour this week (more below) so I was motivated..unlike my usual procrastinating self! I did manage to make a decision and buy a faux (not fake- per Juliet) Christmas tree.

I had been coming around to the idea as real trees have been getting pricier, less nice, and harder to come by..and I had mentioned before often become a stick in our dry climate here by Christmas..which is worrying. I ended up getting this flocked Fraser Fir tree ( I know also shocking I got white ) at Home Depot. I kind of fell in love with this one as soon as I walked in. It had soft dot lights and some brown and green bits which made it look more natural to me!

I haven’t decorated it.. but I’m trying some of what we have and not use ALL the ornaments and keep it to the ones I really love and the sentimental kid ones.. I also am adding branches and greens to give it a less uniform look..

It’s also my first year using a tree collar! Similar tree collar here and here and I recently saw this collar in woven black on someone’s tree and it looks great.

Let’s talk stockings..

How’s your stocking game? I always like to add one new one each year that catches my eye. We don’t do matched, rather coordinated. I like arty looking stockings (aka socks to my family), and everyone has something different.

Our mudroom right now with a few cute stockings and some greens.. I will add some to the fireplace area later this week.

I had to share a few stockings that I am loving.. these by Marimekko at West Elm are ADORABLE!

These faux fur stockings are on sale and can be personalized..and this linen white and gold bead stocking has a fun modern feel.

You can have a custom made Liberty fabric stocking if you order by December 4 on Etsy..(more prints available…and These stockings in mixed fabrics are also beautiful.

I love these mod Jonathan Adler stockings..

Then there are these sweet block printed stockings with bells..and this collection is good if you want neutrals..There are also William Morris stockings, and these in mud cloth on Etsy.

Beautiful Holiday Wrap

I recently came across this cute and whimsical shop RubyStripe, on Etsy making darling wrap and tags. This is a small, women owned business and their tags and wrap are next level pretty. The shop says ships from San Jose, so they came up as a local seller for me.. This is just a snippet of their holiday collection. They have so much more if you like handpainted and feminine.

Gifts for the Guys

I know a few people asked for suggestions for the guys, and since men make up most of my family..I have a few ideas for you.

These Ugg slip-ons are a great gift for anyone… and they have outside soles so they can wear them on a coffee run or something too. They come in black also.

This cozy sweater is great for a younger guys. I know my 24 year old son who likes fun sweaters would love it.

I bought all the men in our family these four way stretch 7 Diamond plaids last year. When I felt them at Nordstrom, I knew they’d love them. They are a bit more pricey, so I opted for one of these in place of a sweater. I even got my dad one. They are soft and super stretchy and very warm and come in many colors.. They are their favorite shirts and like outerwear they are so cozy.

I bought my college son this Rumpl Puffy blanket last year that comes with a cool stuff sack. It has extreme warmth and he takes it camping, to tailgates and always has it in his car. A fun idea for anyone who camps or loves the outside. Comes in nine different designs.

This half zip fleece in a fun patterns is also popular with young guys and this is a good price. Especially for the kid who always ‘loses’ his every year! Griffin, I’m talking about you..

This RVCA Crewneck , below in grey, has a classic fit and feels so soft inside and out. I bought one for my dad who likes old school sweatshirt style, but appreciates the warmth. I’m thinking of getting one for the Utah son too.

And this zip up fleece hoodie on right, has a cool pattern both my sons would love.

This sweater by Marine Layer is a bit pricier, but super nicely made and a classic for those ski guys or just like that retro style like my oldest does. This sweater is heavy cotton and so nicely made.

Two years ago I got Max this Ugg robe and he still loves it!

The other thing the boys always want is socks… like this 3 pack from UGG are so, so soft…and these Bombas sport socks hug your arches and you never want to wear any others for sports once you have a pair.

Lastly..This Hatch alarm clock/sound machine/reading light was a hit last year, so I am including it again. A great gift for anyone -and for those who want the phone out of the bedroom.

I just bought this for my sons.. Joshua Weisman’s, An Unapologetic Cookbook, is supposed to help you find your cooking intuition. The recipes were absolutely delicious looking dishes my guys would want to eat and could make.

I got these packing cubes for both the guys as they are traveling more now and a good price for a really useful gift! I bought these two options, but there are also black and other simpler designs available.

This UGG sweatshirt is nice and comes in four colors..

I will try to add to this list as we move through the season and update it if things run out..

Holiday Home Tour 2022

I was lucky to be invited to join a Holiday Home Tour this week. There were five days of fantastic and creative holiday decor ideas and Juliet and I were part of Wednesday’s tour which was living rooms/ dens. If you missed it, I shared my little pink Christmas tree I have in my little office/den area!

pink Christmas tree in white room

Juliet shared her beautiful and cozy blue library and all her pretty and festive decor..I loved her mantel!

Links also to Cindy, Mary Ann and Annie’s homes along with all the talented ladies and their homes from all over the country is at the end of this post..

Juliet and I also did our first LIVE on Instagram. Though we were a little shaky in the technical parts at first, it was a lot of fun sort of like coffee hour-and great to chat with those who popped by and left comments! Hopefully this might be a regular thing, so if you aren’t following along on Instagram, please do. We love to interact with you all. You can watch our chat here!

DO you make a December bucket list? There are so many holiday activities. The best part of the holiday are the rituals I think! For us, it’s always baking cookies, going to San Francisco for lunch and shopping, and one night to drive by the lights of Willow Glen and a few others. I just alwasys hope to squeeze it all in..If you need ideas for fun things to do, Elizabeth had a great post this week chock full of ideas! I’m printing it out and trying to add a few more.

Tomorrow is another one of those special December things- our town of Los Gatos has it’s annual holiday parade. It’s the biggest holiday parade west of the Rockies! I’ll share and write more about it next week on a post with a few other on hometown holidays. Plus festive outfit ideas are coming on Tuesday for December’s Signature Style…

And that is my weekend meanderings for this week. Please stop over at Elizabeth and Juliet’s blogs to see what fun they are sharing..

My Two New Favorite Christmas Treats to Give

December 23, 2017 By kimwheeler No Comments

ARE YOU FINDING TIME TO BAKE? Sorry that wasn’t meant to be all caps, but seems appropriate. I have NO time to bake, so instead of making a day of it as I would in the past, I’m making a batch here and there- sometimes while watching a show at night, sometimes whipping up a few in the afternoon or in the morning before breakfast. I have even baked some late at night. To me it’s not a drag as I like this part of Christmas so much. I will do anything to fit it in. Same with cards. Some people can’t be bothered anymore and I get it. I truly enjoy the whole process of writing notes and sealing them up while sipping a cup of tea and listening to holiday tunes.

It helps me a lot to look at each little part of the season as something that makes it fun! Today is wrapping day and my youngest Griffin helps me with that. When he was small he liked wrapping and helping. When I was small my grandmother taught me how to properly wrap and not waste paper and how to make a pretty ribbon, I think mainly to keep me occupied and I did the same with him.

Anyway, about the treats, this is another post that should have been shared earlier. I was beyond crazy a bit, but I love making new discoveries each year and thought I might share though it is late in the season. These are now going to go into the family recipes for holiday baking.

First, the anise cookies are something I came up with as an alternative to biscotti. If you like traditional biscotti you’ll love them. I usually make biscotti to gift at the holidays, but they are a heck of a lot of work with the twice baking, etc and don’t make so much. I was deciding whether to make biscotti or a refrigerator cookie and thought let me see how it is substituting the anise flavoring for the vanilla and add some aniseed plus some chopped pecans.

They came out better than I hoped and even my kids said they had a great taste without being too sweet. I love that they are similar to the biscotti, not so crisp and very simple. These are great with a cup of holiday tea! I gave these in cellophane bags to my tennis friends and also to my neighbors with homemade tags and black twine. I found the string in Switzerland this summer in the cutest shop in Wengen for 8 Swiss francs and I am loving it on all my presents this year.

Anise Refrigerator Cookies

2 sticks butter softened

3/4 C granulated sugar

1 egg

1 t. anise flavoring

1 t. aniseed

2 1/2 C flour

1 t. salt

1 cup of chopped pecans (walnuts  or sliced almonds can also work)

Raw sugar to roll logs in

Mix butter and sugar until fluffy, add in egg and anise flavoring. When mixed, gently add in flour, salt, aniseeds and nuts. On a floured surface lightly knead to combine nuts and seeds and divide into two. Using parchment, roll each into a long log and roll some raw sugar on the outside. Wrap each log and refrigerate an hour or overnight. When ready, slice cookies and bake at 350 for around 12 minutes depending on size of cookies. They should be lightly golden on edges.

The second new treat that I couldn’t resist trying was Two Ingredient Chocolate Bark from Cup of Joe. I shared this earlier this week on the blog’s Facebook page. I love anything that looks fancy and seems easy. The recipe takes less than ten minutes to make and it sets up on the counter in about an hour. It looks beautiful and makes a pretty gift.

The key here is using nice chocolate bars like Ghirardelli and I found white chocolate from Valrhona at Whole Foods. They sell it in bulk chunks off a huge white bar. Make sure you melt bars, not chips which do not temper well. You want your bark to be shiny, so chop it and then alternate a bowl of white and dark 20 seconds at a time in the microwave and slowly stir.

Pour the dark in a big 1/4 inch thick puddle on parchment and drizzle the white over any way you like. I topped mine with hazelnuts and flaky salt, but you can see other variations on her blog. You can get a fancier look if you use a toothpick and swirl the chocolate, which I didn’t do. Fun and easy and is looks very gourmet and tastes amazing. It would also be great with dried fruits, other nuts or chopped candy pieces- whatever you like!

Happy Holidays!

Kim

I did a little field trip and braved the heavy rain yesterday with my friend Elaine to visit the new @westelm in Campbell. It’s nice having a home store you can drive up to and park nearby. I bought a few new glasses for my shelves and a pretty decanter. Will share more about this new shop on my stories.

Stay cozy today. ☔️

Here we are again. More families destroyed by the Here we are again. More families destroyed by the inability of our nation to take a stand against the gun lobby, manufacturers and politicians supporting them. Little children and their teachers gone. I don’t want to hear about freedoms.. Those are faux freedoms gun culture enables.

What about the freedom to go to school and feel safe without being gunned down? The freedom to go to the grocery store, the movies, a festival or a concert, a nightclub without fear of being killed? We all are in danger in all places. States with strong gun laws are at the mercy of the states with the weakest laws, as we have no walls between us.

We don’t need to live this way. We just need to get together and stop the madness. NO OTHER first world nation lives lives this way with guns and weapons meant for war, easily had by anyone who wants them. People are afraid to vacation here. It’s only a matter of time before every one of us is touched by this unrestricted gun culture. Let’s stop being complacent. We must absolutely demand our politicians use their power to change this. The Tennessee Representative for this district sent out a holiday card with his family holding automatic weapons…like it’s some kind of joke. These are children’s lives. And what about those who are left behind losing a loved one or experiencing this horror and surviving?

Well after all this weather, and so much indoor ti Well after all this weather, and so much indoor time, I’m officially sick of everything and I am ready to give the home a little refresh. Homegoods and TJMaxx have some great spring items and a promotion with items from France, Italy, etc. They can be a good source for outdoor pots, new pillows, rugs and decorative bits. It’s good time to find a ‘few’ emphasis on few, new things for the home. They carry unique items, many one offs, but you have to be a discerning shopper.. What to look for and what to avoid on this little clip.

I’ll be taking more about how to shop smart at these sort of places on the upcoming blog as well. What’s been your experience at these stores? I have had good luck and bad and I think you have to be smart about what you choose and don’t fill a home with these things.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on shopping there. More tips from my last trip there on stories and saved on shopping tips.

I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room today as my builder @mikemccloudconstruction shared it too. I still love the way it came out! I had saved many inspiration pictures of how I wanted this to look. I was lucky Mike helped me make this happen. A good builder who listens and has ideas as well, helps so much. I’m sharing some of the extra details up close.

I loved this blue sort of organic watery tile for a pool bath. I also knew I wanted an open shelf for all the pool towels so people could grab them on the way out the door. The @serenaandlily mirror definitely has that nautical almost porthole, sort of look and picked up the unfinished oak color. I used an RH pendant light and the sink is Victoria and Albert. The counter is from a slab of @vadaraquartz that I spilt and used in the laundry as well as the boy’s bath. I choose an inexpensive cement tile for this space and the connecting laundry/mud room which works with drippy pool feet! It’s been almost four years and all still looking great!

DM me if anyone wants details I left out! I thought I did a post on this, but maybe not! I need to do that with all the baths.

Hope you all have a good week and get some nature in the first day of spring!

We went in the beginning part of the tournament which we always do, and got to see Andy Murray, Sabalenka, Zverev, Raducanu, and so many fantastic other players. We basically eat, slept and breathe tennis for two days straight and we loved it! You can still catch play on the @tennischannel 🎾

I separated the sectional and sort of like it apar I separated the sectional and sort of like it apart. This RH couch is a LOT of maintenance and can look pretty deflated after a weekend of hanging out. In hindsight, I’d buy a couch that does not require so much fluffing and cushion alternating. I snapped this pic because it was one of the times I had the pillows looking nice on it. You also need a lot of pillows to not get swallowed up by it. I call it the great white.

The local RH actually has a cleaning team that steams and fluffs their couch and I’ve seen them before the shop opens. I found it hard to get reviews on this couch before buying because RH does not have them online and if you notice they don’t do social media… so I’m just putting it out there. I will share what I love here, but I think it helps to be transparent about what is a disappointment too.
