How to Shop Homegoods, An Easy Weeknight Dish and White Jeans

March 24, 2023 By kimwheeler 36 Comments

On this week’s meander, tips for shopping Homegoods, an easy one pot dinner for weeknights, white jeans, a great moisturizer, a book and more..

It’s time for our weekend meander with Elizabeth and Juliet..Can you believe it’s spring already? The weather felt like Tahoe this week, and it’s still raining with more to come, but let’s see what we can do inside to make it feel like springtime.

When I am sick of looking at things, the first thing I do is mix up my throw pillows. For spring, I take out the wool or fleece pillows and put out my cotton florals and brighter cotton throws stuffed in the closet.

I will put a green plant on the coffee table or island and maybe change up the books I have around.

A succulent plant on a kitchen island
This plant is so happy in any location. I don’t know what it is!

In the bedroom change up your duvet cover and maybe the throw? Can you add pretty pillowcases or use brighter ones in your closet? Add a throw and a small posey next to your bed.

When it’s time, I put a new plant by the front door and add a pillow by the bench at the entry. I had done this a month or so ago, but the storms were too much for them and I will try again soon.

I was really craving some color in my neutral main space so I added these blue pillows from Homegoods I found this week.

The Edgewater Chairs and Stella rug (super marked down) are both on sale 20% off now at Serena & Lily.

Tips for Shopping Homegoods/TJMaxx

When we are sick of looking at the same thing indoors for so long, it feels good to add a few new things. You can move stuff from other rooms around and try them in different spots. When I just need something fresh to inspire me, I will occasionally hit Homegoods at this time of year. During seasonal changes they get big shipments and it can be the best time to peruse their offerings.

I found the Vogue book and the box for a spring update for my rattan tray. ( On sale 20% now.) Someone told me the box looks like one of the Aerin pieces!

Why go to Homegoods? Sometimes the answer is simply, it’s not at the mall, and it’s nearby. No other place has so many home related items plus clothes. You can find some good things and I did a small PSA on it on my Instagram this week, but you need to be smart about how you shop there. Mixed in with some real finds is also a lot of junk, to be frank. At times it can look like a cyclone hit it. Other times it’s a treasure trove.

A few tips:

  • Go with a mission. Know what you need or it can be overwhelming and you’ll bring home stuff you don’t need. Last week I went for pillows and a box for the coffee table remotes.
  • Look for name brands and nicer looking pieces. Homegoods buys a lot of one-offs and that is something I like. It’s a bit of a hunt and if you are into that kind of thing, you can have luck here. You need patience. Often you will need to make a few passes on an aisle to see something, often under other stuff.
  • Search out pieces that bring your certain look to your home. Could this be found at a nicer boutique? Does it feel special and something you will like for a long time? These are the questions I ask myself before buying.
  • Certain times of year they have promotions like Treasures of Asia, World Traveler, Made in Europe and such. These are times to get some quality pieces that they have small amounts of. Right now the Provence promotion is on. I also look for items made in America.
  • When shopping for throw pillows, find cotton or linen pieces sewn nicely with zippers that allow you to replace the inserts. I found some beautiful block print pillows this time for $20 each. I keep my eye open for them everytime I go, and I snagged them. They haven’t had them since last summer. If you replace with your own inserts, (I love these and I buy 22 x22 for the 20 x 20 pillows), they look custom. Avoid synthetic materials. Beach towels from Turkey are amazing, so are the decorator and coffee table books.. and the rugs- many good ones. Look for wool and name brand rugs.
  • What to avoid… I have learned the hard way the furniture is not a good purchase. Two outdoor wicker sets failed me within a year, an indoor bench lost its leg and broke. Sheets seem to be hit and miss and often not sized right or poor quality. Seasonal things – i.e bunnies and hearts, signs with sayings, fake florals and wreaths – just say no to all those. Stick with nice accessories and try not to overbuy. Your goal is to not change up the whole house with new stuff, but find one to two things that inspire and freshen things up with what you already have! Remember quality not quantity.
  • Locations can vary hugely. Right now the Almaden location is loaded with things, but a day later I stopped by the Cupertino location and they had none of the items I shared. Some may get their shipments later, or a completely different mix.

You can also buy online and they update their site daily. Right now some quality offerings that caught my eye..

This Fortessa (great brand) hobnail glass set, Floral Goods cotton pillow, this pretty blue ceramic vase, , grey ginger jar, this yellow hand block cotton pillow, and and this Kinfolk Travel book I want.

This week I had a facial.. I try and do that at least quarterly and it’s a nice re-set for the new season. The aesthetician recommended Epicurean Hydro Plus Moisturizer... I am sensitive and dry and yet can’t do heavy. I am so happy with it and my skin loves it too.

I caught an NPR talk this week about self care and setting boundaries, and many people praised this book by Bay Area writer Mia Birdsong. They call, How We Show Up the most inspiring and uplifting book they have read in a long time. Another person said their book club was obsessed with it. With that endorsement, it’s my next read.

I have been getting many compliments on this Essie nail color, Sheers To You, which is pinky with a bit of reflection and makes your nails look fresh. The Treat and Color is also good for your nails.

These Madewell Perfect Vintage Straight Leg White Jeans are highly rated and come in Petite and Tall sizes and 25% off now. I love the look. Comparable, but with mid-rise are these by Rag & Bone (also on sale now!)

A friend sent me this link to the darling Flower Magazine and this article about using vintage brooches on handbags, clutches, headbands and other ways. I found it inspiring and am digging out my colorful brooches to see what I can play around with.

An easy weeknight dinner

Max and I often buy boxes of dark baby greens and use them in sandwiches and meals all week long. One easy dinner I often do is tortellini cooked and then drained. I sauté mushrooms, (sometimes zucchini too), and then add the cooked tortellini, and add a bit more olive oil and grated fresh parmesan and a bit of salt and pepper. I serve it on a big bed of the greens and top with toasted walnuts. The night I took this pic I added some leftover tomatoes and sliced almonds. This is a good end of the week meal to make with the veg left over in your refrigerator and some frozen tortellini. A one dish meal with all your greens.

If you missed them, Juliet did a great spring table idea post, and Elizabeth shared 13 Self-Care Ideas for Spring.

On last weekend’s post, I checked out the first Evereve store in Northern Cal, and a vegan restaurant, toile pieces for spring, some beautiful woven bags, a book on J.Crew’s history, and more..

Thanks for stopping by and have a happy weekend – with some sunshine I hope!

Weekend Finds & House Talk

August 25, 2018 By kimwheeler 10 Comments

How was your week? I am just completely overwhelmed with house stuff like looking at tile, faucets and trying to get my house plan STILL approved by the city I live in. It’s been extremely worrying and stressful, and stomachache inducing as we are paying rent at the rental and building hasn’t even begun. I’ve finally nailed down my bath tiles and floors. A peek of some of it here.. and my dying feet at the tile store- don’t you love that herringbone set tile?

A few pics from the Ann Sacks showroom in San Francisco. I love the tile on the floor with the marble- maybe for my master. For the boys I am thinking a combo of grey, off white tiles and some dark denim blue colored accents like these cute tiles for their shower floor and in the shampoo niche or in a stripe going around the shower. It’s hard to see the true blue colors in a photo.

On the bright side, our rental is larger than my own house and my landlords are the kindest, sweetest people who I adore.  They were so cute and came to get some mail and I invited them in. They were very kind and their daughter and granddaughter said they love my way of decorating. I was surprised as I have such a crazy mix here, but I guess together it all works. They made my day and were so sweet. I am what is described as a nester. I am happiest at home and wherever I am, I have to make it my own. A lot of people say they would do nothing to a temporary rental, but I would find it hard to live here without making it mine in some way.

What they liked was my colors in my bedroom, quirky colored handbags as placed about, and some pops of color with white. They have a wonderful trough planter under the desk window and I replanted it with little flowers, so the white and pops of color kind of worked well!

Sorry for the messy bed. I love these lampshades I found at Homegoods again.

Throw was from a mill in Leeds, England and wonderfully soft also from Homegoods. ( I almost typed Homegods, but they kind of are for affordable stuff.)

Love, love, love this desk and the view. I use my baskets (This from the French Basketeer,) as filing areas of a sort.

There is a good mix of blue, natural woods and rugs and throws here. I’m a bit of a throw ho.. Sorry I couldn’t resist- but they do easily add color and fun to the home and spice up things.  I’ve also found some nice accents at a local chain called Harvest I adore.  I like plain furnishings, so I can change things up with the seasons and frankly when I get sick of looking at things. I think visual people are that way and if you are someone like that, it’s best to stick with a lot of white, solids and blacks. You have a lot of choices when you do.

It’s been summer, so I’ve had all my blue out and in this rental I was lucky to have a wonderful spot to display some of my blue books, glasses, plates and vases with a mix of coral we have from vacations over the years.  How awesome is this built in? It fit my record player and I created a nice wrap station too in one of the drawers for the upcoming holidays.

This cute throw is from the Los Gatos Harvest store.

It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth and Juliet. 🧡

This weekend I shared how I spiffed up the front with a few mums from the local Ace and Trader Joe’s .. Happily, these baskets I bought last year at Target are still looking good, and are available again. I link to them on the blog.
My wreath of petrified leaves bought last fall at my local @buncheslg florist seems to have survived the garage pretty well. ( Miraculously!)

I love these multicolored mums from Trader Joe’s. I missed them last year and they go fast!

Other fun things on the blog are an inspiring home book, some great pant options for fall, and a few cottages in Carmel that are for sale!

I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly P I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly Pinterest, but I’ve had it forever. I need to remind myself this quite often!

Our mindset is everything and I was inadvertently raised to worry about things. My mom was one of 8 kids and her mother warned them about the dangers of everything to keep them all alive in her mind. I think that was seeped in my dear mom’s bones and passed onto us.. by no fault of hers.

My brain defaults to that and I have worked hard to stop that sort of internal monologue.

Remember worrying never kept anyone safer. We don’t care more about someone by being a worrier. We just need to expect good things will happen.

Being a person who is always worrying is not good for those around you either. It hurts your family and their own feelings of security. The more I realize this, the more I feel the need to reassure, not stress and trust all will work out… and might even be fantastic!

Hope you all have a Happy Friday - and trust things will work out!

I’ll be back tomorrow with the weekend post!

I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to re I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to remember we may already have what we think we need to look great.

Right now the season is changing and I - like everybody else, am super excited for fall clothes, adding new things to my closet, and refreshing my look.

Hold off though. Before we buy anything or get ‘influenced’ from people like myself, we have to first look at what we have.

I am constantly reminded that the best dressed people have less clothes and wear great pieces on repeat!

Get in your closet and you may see you already have that perfect fall sweater or the ballet flat that’s everywhere!! The truth is your pieces may be cooler than the new offerings that are out there- and no one else will have them.

Make this a goal to go to your closet before you buy for fall and I promise you’ll shop smarter and get what you really love and need.

Have a beautiful Friday!! Here’s to sweater days soon. 🍂

I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I jus I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I just realized yesterday how very much I’m enjoying being at home especially now windows wide-open and the beautiful weather. We couldn’t be more lucky here in California when the weather is as it is now. 🧡

My tomatoes finally turned red and my new fig plant that I added to the front yard in spring already has figs on it! Marlo is enjoying the sunshine and fresh air too. She’s nearly 18 years old.

Nothing better than this late summer early fall…Still the goodies of summer and the promise of fun things in fall without all the heat.

If you didn’t read my weekend post there’s a wonderful inspiring story I shared about getting together with your neighbors and creating small micro neighborhoods…. and how the French love this time of year for socializing again too.. Lots to look forward to!

Have a beautiful day.

The best part about fashion right now is there really are no rules and we just had to find what works for us and our lifestyle and our bodies!

This quote! Only we can make ourselves truly happy and as women we so often taught to look outside of ourselves for that and that’s never a good thing. We have to learn to ask for what we want without apologizing and go for it ourselves.🩷

Happy Friday friends!

What do you do when it’s rainy and cool in Tahoe What do you do when it’s rainy and cool in Tahoe? Well someone asked me today and actually there is a lot to do and it’s one of the best times to go!

Last weekend it was a cool 48 degrees and it felt like November even though it was Labor Day weekend. We enjoyed some sun and breezes so being layers!

You can pack a lot in the two days with great hikes and walks..and food! Two good hikes- one at Ward Creek, another at Sugar Pine Point.. are perfect for now! Have some lunch by the river @riverranchlodge, take a walk on the lake and a drive on 89, end it by playing games and have a cozy dinner in with pot pies from Tahoe House bakery. ( SO good!)

Tahoe when it’s shoulder season is the best kept secret. Though normally Labor Day would be hot here. Make some plans to enjoy the fall here! 🍂

Here’s to an early fall! I added a few autumn touches to our tiny cabin while I was there..

Yes I snapped that 🐻 bear! He was crossing the road. This is their season to bulk up so you leave no food in your cars..

I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to Princess Diana, my original style idol. I recently found this book my dear mother bought me way back in the 80’s. Tucked inside was this torn page from American @vogue about this new girl’s style….Oh if they only knew what this young woman would be to the world. …

She was so much more than what she wore. She was a real life princess in her heart as well as title- touching so many lives. Who didn’t she care about or show kindness towards? She had it in her heart and that radiated in her face.

These are a few photos that are my favorites and a few that show her fun personality that always shines through.. 🩷 Of course everything she wore is back in style again like this vest - the caps, the blazers, and floral prints.

This day makes me hugely sad.
If it wasn’t for the nasty British press ( who are still horrific), and paparazzi she would be here.
