Oscar 2020 Chat

February 10, 2020 By kimwheeler 11 Comments

It’s that time again friends. Grab a latte and let’s dish on all things Oscar!! I have to say I wasn’t so excited about this Oscars because the film selections seem less exciting every year. That said I did love Judy, Little Women, 1917, and Ford vs. Ferarri and sort of Jojo Rabbit. I have yet to see Harriet or Parasite and a few others. I don’t do violent films like The Joker. Still it’s always good fun to watch the show and have some frivolous stuff to get worked up about with the past few weeks of politics right?

The kick off with Janelle Monae was exuberant. This gal is so talented. Here she is with Billy Porter.

Let me just start by saying the Red Carpet pre-show by ABC sucked. Billy Porter and the other gal, Lilly Aldridge were just awful interviewers, and Billy, dressed to the nines himself, knew squat about clothes. He didn’t know what a peplum was or what to call ruffles and called Billy Eilish’s Chanel outfit with a zillion CCs a Gucci, so the man needs to be reassigned to the after-parties or something. I suppose I should have changed over to the E channel for the pre-show, but I am not sure what’s up over there now without the Fashion Police. Things are very PC now and it’s kind of boring. You could tell the interviewers were so careful not to ask who the designers were and focus on the actor’s accomplishments, but on the red carpet we really want the fabulous fashion facts, no?

The show felt like it lacked continuity without a presenter. It also was missing some lightness and humor that comes with a spot of comic relief. Chris Rock and Steve Martin, came out in the beginning, should have done the whole show. Thanks to no presenters, many of the musicians weren’t even introduced at points and no names appeared on screen, so it was odd. I had no idea who some folks were. Did anyone else feel that too?

One cute thing was a song with all those who voiced Elsa in film versions around the world, which was original and a treat. Eminem also made a surprise performance. The musical parts were all exceptional I thought.

Other good moment were when Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves rekindled their onscreen flirtation from Something’s Gotta Give. She was authentically Diane in her checked ensemble. I loved her black rings and nails. He is ADORABLE as ever… and likes older gals. Could this be sequel? I know a lot of people who would see another Nancy Myers’ film with them!

I was glad to see Renee Zellweger win for Best Actress. The Judy movie was one of the best I have seen in the last year and she really was fantastic. Her singing was very good and I’m surprised they didn’t have her sing one of Judy’s songs from the film.

I loved her simple elegant look.

My favorite look was Penelope Cruz in vintage Chanel!! She looks amazing close up so natural. This dress had pockets. This spot where they take pics is overlit and they all look better in the actual theatre.

With Salma Hayek, also lovely.

Other favorites for me were Brie Larson… This was Celine.

I like this trend of almost naked makeup and less or no jewelry. Gorgeous up close.

I also thought Regina King was beautiful. Loved this dress.

Charlize in Dior was stunning.

Cynthia Erivo’s dress was also really special. This woman is so darn talented starring as Harriet Tubman and she sang the most beautiful song from the film last night. I had no idea about her and I can’t wait to see Harriet.

Zazie Beetz dress was shorter, but I love this look!

Caitriona Balfe was in Ford vs. Ferrari, but I know her from Outlander so I was thrilled to see her on the Red Carpet. Her fashion sense is very dramatic and this was Valentino. Loved it. Are any of you Outlander fans? I can’t wait for the new season next week!

Brad Pitt…So happy to see him get an Oscar for acting. He’s like an old boyfriend you haven’t seen for ages, but darn, still appealing. I think he’s coming into his own. I like his look here- totally Brad, no artifice there.

Mindy Kaling really lovely in this gorgeous yellow. This necklace was a real one from the Ocean’s movie. She had an armed guard stay outside of her home last night to protect it. She didn’t want to know its real value (in the millions), as she said she’d be too nervous wearing it.

Geena Davis – another cool dress with pockets. Geena received the humanitarian award as she is the founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media which works to avoid gender bias and stereotypes of female characters aimed at kids. (Wow. ) She also works at the United Nations and was a chair on the California Commission on the status of women. That’s just a little of what she does!

I thought this gold frock on Scottish writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who wrote the screenplay for 1917, was beautiful.

Mark Ruffalo and his wife Sunrise Coigney make a elegant couple. I adore Mark and all he does for climate change. You can follow Mark here on Instagram.

I think Rebel Wilson was great in Jojo Rabbit and I liked this old Hollywood look so much on her.

Not sure this was her best look, but the green on Greta Gerwig’s gown is very pretty. I would have gone with no necklace here and some long dark gloves and drop earrings.

Janelle Monae in a specially made Ralph Lauren. Up close this was amazing.

I just adore this gal Beanie Feldstein from Booksmart so much. She looks cute.

Gal Godot’s Givenchy gown was dreamy. I don’t think it needed the necklace at all.

Natalie Portman’s gown had a cape with the name of those women director’s who were not nominated embroidered on the trim.

Best Actress winner Laura Dern with her mom Diane Ladd. Sweet. I have to see the Marriage Story too. I’m really behind.

Jane Fonda killing it at 82. This woman just keeps going and is currently a climate warrior. Her life revolves around fixing climate change now according to an article in the new Vogue. So inspiring.

These two dapper guys, George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman were the stars of 1917 and what a film. Please see it if you haven’t. They both should have been nominated.

This little gal, Julia Butters was in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I have to say this would be my childhood dream outfit! Very cute.

Some other took fashion risks and I’m not sure they worked..

Florence Pugh from Little Women. Not loving the belt and the matching shoes. Too Bridemaidly to me. Color was beautiful. Hair and makeup were pretty.

Hmm. All I am going to say is Billy Eilish is 18 and appears so. Are these nasty fake nails going away anytime soon? I’m so over that trend.

Kristin Wiig took some serious fashion risks with this and with her short do I think it looked pretty cool.

Olivia Colman is lovely, but not sure this was the most flattering dress. I like her new hair though!

Margo Robbie was in a beautiful Chanel that I would like to see it without the arm bits. I think her dark roots and the extreme makeup keep giving her a harsh almost scary look that reminds me of her superhero films. Love to see a softer side of her. I still have to see Bombshell. Her performance is supposed to be great.

Saoirse Ronan.. What is this? Looks like a bad idea. Cute hair and makeup.

Lucy Boynton in what appears to be Chanel, but it’s just frumpy to be honest. The top does not fit right.

Rooney Mara..It’s odd, but sort of pretty. It works on the right person who is probably her.

Scarlett’s hair and makeup were beautiful. This gown was the loveliest shade, but it almost looked like it was going to fall off her chest from the side which bothered me. Fit may have been an issue.

Timothee Chalamet’s suit was different. He like to take chances and he’s young. What did you think? People said he looked like the car valet.

Big trends of the evening were less necklaces more bare necks and large earrings, or nothing at all. Rings were having a moment especially oversized cocktail versions worn on the forefinger as Caitriona is here..

Other looks that were popular were slicked back hair into knots or sleek looks. I love Spike Lee’s wife Tonya Lewis Lee’s simple chic hair and makeup. Her dress was gorgeous too.

Minimal makeup or neutrals like on Brie here.

Gleamy skin as seen on Renee, looked fresh. That’s a highlighter on cheekbones, jawlines and collarbones she is wearing. The Glossier highlighter is my favorite for this over a powdered face to get a little natural sheen.

When a necklace was worn, it was large. Zazie Beetz was a standout in the beauty department with her natural hair and makeup and sported a stunning necklace with her simple dress.

This was finished at 2 a.m. so I hope there aren’t too many errors!

Okay friends let’s hear what you all think. Feel free to tell me I’m wrong on any of these opinions and who I may have missed mentioning. And what are your thoughts about the show?

x Kim

Oscar Chat 2019

February 25, 2019 By kimwheeler 6 Comments

Good morning pals. I was dead tired putting this together last night, but I thought I’d throw a few of the best pics together and do a little round-up anyway so don’t kill me if I left your favorites out… and there could be typos..

Gaga fixing Rami Malek’s tie on the red carpet.

What did you all think of the show? I thought it was a little odd without a host to be honest. It seemed to be missing some flow and some of the acceptance speeches were droning on while people read the names of every human they’ve ever come in contact with. It was a bit of a mess at the beginning. Then it seemed to gain some rhythm and it always ends well when there are some inspiring acceptance speeches. Olivia Colman proved again she is the most likable and cute actor out there. Rami Malek is darling and I was so happy he won and he brought his film wife who is now his real-life girlfriend. Barbara Streisand had the best intro to a film – Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlannsman saying she loved it for being funny, entertaining and telling the truth, something really needed now. I so want to see it. In my opinion the best parts of the night- The Queen opening with the original band members and Adam Lambert- and Gaga and Bradley Cooper singing their Shadows song..

The internet was freaking out when he left his microphone and went to sit with her on the piano bench. Wowsers they have chemistry. People were asking how does he then go back and sit with his girlfriend? LOL

In the end Green Book won, which had some controversy, but I thought it still a great film and eye-opening about a lot of things people have no clue were happening in America just a few decades ago. Personally though, I thought Bohemian Rhapsody was amazing – the story, the music and I kind of was hoping it won.

Some of the best looks of the night…

Best Actress winner Olivia Colman in custom made Prada. I can’t wait to see her in the new season of The Crown. I thought she was good in The Favorite, but the movie was a dog.
Brie Larson’s look was my favorite. I loved her hair, makeup and her Celine gown! Wow.
Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh is 56 and looks better than ever in Elie Saab.
Kiki Layne. Absolute perfection
Gemma Chan in Valentino. This looks so comfy with the pockets!
Amy Adams in Versace. This was a gorgeous dress and the photos don’t show it. I like her natural hair and makeup.
Regina King won Best Supporting Actress. I have not been able to see If Beale Street Could Talk, but I hope it comes back as it wasn’t here long and in just a few theaters. Loved her all white and beautiful earrings.
Charlize’s Dior was a gorgeous blue. A totally different look for her.
Laura Harrier wore this beautiful blue Louis Vuitton.

I thought this dress was beautiful on Kelly Ripa.
Lady Gaga looked great, but I’m used to her being so over the top in cool things that this look seemed almost a bit too safe to me. What did you all think?

Both Melissa McCarthy and Glenn Close were stunning. Melissa must have gotten a new stylist as this looked so great on her. Glen’s dress by Carolina Herrera had 4 millions beads and weighed 42 pounds she said. Note they both have capes here. The cape look is still hot.
Isn’t this fabulous? Glen on the red carpet from the back. I am sad she didn’t win, but I do love Olivia Colman. Has anyone seen Glen’s movie? I have heard The Wife is great.
Emilia Clarke in Balenciaga. Really lovely.
Dame Helen Mirren always looks fab not frumpy.
Marie Kondo in pink which was very big last night and is flattering on so many.
Rachel Weisz’s rubber dress was different.
A beautiful look on Jennifer Hudson who sang a song from the RBG documentary.

Best Actor winner Rami Malek and girlfriend Lucy Boynton. I thought her dress was a bit classic for such a young person. He looked terrific.

Not the best looks these people have ever worn…

Emma Stone. Don’t know why, but I don’t like it and she could look a LOT better.

I’m a floral lover, but this was too much on Maya Rudolf! I’m having flashbacks to Mrs Roper. Her earrings were awesome. She would be fab in a more sleek and modern look with the same earrings.
Linda Cardenelli’s Schiaparelli gown was more showgirl than Oscars.
Sarah Paulson is so pretty, but this gown and her hair did not flatter.
What did you all think of this tulle number on Kacey Musgraves? I was not a fan.

I love Tina Fey, but she could take a few risks. This is not so hip or flattering. I’d love to see her in a long sleeve dress with a cool sheer print and her hair back.

Things are changing though. You can tell people are caring less about being ‘red carpet’ perfect and are dressing to please themselves. This seems a result of the backlash a few years ago when all the carpet was about was the designers and not the work these people did. Now we are seeing more individuality and less styled people.

Some cute couples who did their own THING…

I was happy Mahershala Ali won tonight. I loved him in Green Book. He is a local guy. He and his wife do dress eclectically. She is also an artist.
  • Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa in pink.
  • Pharrell in what looks like Scout uniform with his wife.

Some of the after-party looks are actually better than the awards show…

Gabrielle Union Wade wore this to the after party and I think it looks so elegant and yes the pockets are making me love it even more.
Renee Zelwegger at the same party. Love this dress though she is almost too thin!

Tell me your thoughts on the show. Who did you think looked great or who needed help? Did your favorites win?

Have a good week!

Oscar Red Carpet Chat 2018

March 5, 2018 By kimwheeler 10 Comments

The 2018 Academy Awards awards were off to a beautiful start with the prettiest set I’ve ever seen at the awards with the proscenium arch resembling the inside of a geode with differing permutations of color throughout the show. I am always intrigued to see what the design is each year ever since my 7th grade art teacher Mr. Hendricks gave us an assignment to design the set for the Academy Awards. I was really clueless at that age, but it made me think of what goes into it ever since.

Jimmy Kimmel was funny, but there wasn’t enough of his jokes and a bit where he dragged other celebs into another theatre to surprise people was boring and not funny. The rest of the show was okay. To be honest it wasn’t one of the best and a little bland I thought. I wasn’t as thrilled about the nominees like I was last year. I did love Lady Bird and Darkest Hour though and was glad Gary Oldman and Allison Janney won as they were both excellent. Not so sure how excited I am to see The Shape of Water, but I do still want to see Phantom Thread if only for the sets and the acting.

The stars of Black Panther on the Red Carpet.

Highlights-

Eva Marie Saint, the 1955 winner for Best Actress. A recent window, she was sharp, poignant, funny and elegant. I loved her dress- one of the best.

At age 93 she was more chic than most!! What an inspiration to women everywhere. Keep moving she said.

The amazing Mary J Blige, who performed a soul stirring song and was the first person to ever to be nominated for both acting AND original song in the same film. Yay Mary. I want to see that film, Mudbound. I hear she is excellent in it.

I loved this look on her.

Another classic leading lady was there, Rita Moreno..

Rita Moreno wore the same dress last night that she wore in 1962 to receive her Oscar for West Side Story. Looks like she altered the neckline. Pretty, but she could have done with less accessories- maybe no headband? Still guys she is 86!! I could only hope to be drinking champagne backstage and having fun like her at that age. Go Rita.

Some favorites dresses..

Saiorse Ronan in Calvin Klein. Love her simple elegance.

Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot.

Zendaya in a beautiful chiffon gown.

Sacramento girl Great Gerwig in a dress that looked so her.

Allison Janney in a stunning Reem Acra.

Jennifer Lawrence’s disco ball dress was fun.

Then… lot of white dresses.

Laura Dern in a Calvin Klein gown looked fabulous.

Margo Robie’s Chanel gown and crystal purse.

Jane Fonda amazing as always. She is 80!

Danai Gurira was in a pale pink Gabriela Hearst gown.

Gina Rodriguez in a dreamy Zuhair Murad gown.

Emily Blunt in a soft and feminine baby blue.

Lupita Nyong’o  lovely in gold.

Some ladies just missed the mark I think..

Nicole Kidman. I don’t know, but was this was just a little too Jessica Rabbit to me.

The darling Sally Hawkins is only 41 and this dress is just too matronly for her.

I’m all for pantsuits, but this Louis Vuitton number Emma Stone was wearing just looked unmatched and uninspired.

I love Taraji P. Hensen, but this was bordering on bedroom attire.

Salma Hayak in a custom Gucci that didn’t flatter and the addition of the crystal chains was too much.

Andra Day also just had too much going on with this billowy dress.

Lindsay Vonn was also over accessorized with a busy dress. Love to see her with less eye makeup sometime.

Many men stepped out of the box tonight and showed more style than usual.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman showed some flair with an embellished coat.

Call Me By Your Name stars -Artie Hammer looked great in his velvet Armani as did Timothee Chalamet in all white.

Now tell me please who you thought looked fab and who didn’t…What did you think about the show?? I love rehashing it with you all!

It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth and Juliet. 🧡

This weekend I shared how I spiffed up the front with a few mums from the local Ace and Trader Joe’s .. Happily, these baskets I bought last year at Target are still looking good, and are available again. I link to them on the blog.
My wreath of petrified leaves bought last fall at my local @buncheslg florist seems to have survived the garage pretty well. ( Miraculously!)

I love these multicolored mums from Trader Joe’s. I missed them last year and they go fast!

Other fun things on the blog are an inspiring home book, some great pant options for fall, and a few cottages in Carmel that are for sale!

I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly P I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly Pinterest, but I’ve had it forever. I need to remind myself this quite often!

Our mindset is everything and I was inadvertently raised to worry about things. My mom was one of 8 kids and her mother warned them about the dangers of everything to keep them all alive in her mind. I think that was seeped in my dear mom’s bones and passed onto us.. by no fault of hers.

My brain defaults to that and I have worked hard to stop that sort of internal monologue.

Remember worrying never kept anyone safer. We don’t care more about someone by being a worrier. We just need to expect good things will happen.

Being a person who is always worrying is not good for those around you either. It hurts your family and their own feelings of security. The more I realize this, the more I feel the need to reassure, not stress and trust all will work out… and might even be fantastic!

Hope you all have a Happy Friday - and trust things will work out!

I’ll be back tomorrow with the weekend post!

I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to re I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to remember we may already have what we think we need to look great.

Right now the season is changing and I - like everybody else, am super excited for fall clothes, adding new things to my closet, and refreshing my look.

Hold off though. Before we buy anything or get ‘influenced’ from people like myself, we have to first look at what we have.

I am constantly reminded that the best dressed people have less clothes and wear great pieces on repeat!

Get in your closet and you may see you already have that perfect fall sweater or the ballet flat that’s everywhere!! The truth is your pieces may be cooler than the new offerings that are out there- and no one else will have them.

Make this a goal to go to your closet before you buy for fall and I promise you’ll shop smarter and get what you really love and need.

Have a beautiful Friday!! Here’s to sweater days soon. 🍂

I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I jus I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I just realized yesterday how very much I’m enjoying being at home especially now windows wide-open and the beautiful weather. We couldn’t be more lucky here in California when the weather is as it is now. 🧡

My tomatoes finally turned red and my new fig plant that I added to the front yard in spring already has figs on it! Marlo is enjoying the sunshine and fresh air too. She’s nearly 18 years old.

Nothing better than this late summer early fall…Still the goodies of summer and the promise of fun things in fall without all the heat.

If you didn’t read my weekend post there’s a wonderful inspiring story I shared about getting together with your neighbors and creating small micro neighborhoods…. and how the French love this time of year for socializing again too.. Lots to look forward to!

Have a beautiful day.

What do you do when it’s rainy and cool in Tahoe What do you do when it’s rainy and cool in Tahoe? Well someone asked me today and actually there is a lot to do and it’s one of the best times to go!

Last weekend it was a cool 48 degrees and it felt like November even though it was Labor Day weekend. We enjoyed some sun and breezes so being layers!

You can pack a lot in the two days with great hikes and walks..and food! Two good hikes- one at Ward Creek, another at Sugar Pine Point.. are perfect for now! Have some lunch by the river @riverranchlodge, take a walk on the lake and a drive on 89, end it by playing games and have a cozy dinner in with pot pies from Tahoe House bakery. ( SO good!)

Tahoe when it’s shoulder season is the best kept secret. Though normally Labor Day would be hot here. Make some plans to enjoy the fall here! 🍂

Here’s to an early fall! I added a few autumn touches to our tiny cabin while I was there..

Yes I snapped that 🐻 bear! He was crossing the road. This is their season to bulk up so you leave no food in your cars..

I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to Princess Diana, my original style idol. I recently found this book my dear mother bought me way back in the 80’s. Tucked inside was this torn page from American @vogue about this new girl’s style….Oh if they only knew what this young woman would be to the world. …

She was so much more than what she wore. She was a real life princess in her heart as well as title- touching so many lives. Who didn’t she care about or show kindness towards? She had it in her heart and that radiated in her face.

These are a few photos that are my favorites and a few that show her fun personality that always shines through.. 🩷 Of course everything she wore is back in style again like this vest - the caps, the blazers, and floral prints.

This day makes me hugely sad.
If it wasn’t for the nasty British press ( who are still horrific), and paparazzi she would be here.
