Weekend Meanderings -Live Like an Italian, Easy California Dresses, a Day in Aptos & More

June 25, 2022 By kimwheeler 75 Comments

It’s time for my Weekend Meanderings with Elizabeth and Juliet and all our obsessions of the moment.

As someone said yesterday, ‘I am sick of living in unprecedented times’, and I could not agree more.

I couldn’t post without expressing my outrage on the the unbelievable striking down of Roe v. Wade yesterday. I felt sick about it and also so angry. We now have less rights than our mothers over our own bodies. My mother and grandmother would never believe this. We are one of four nations in the world banning a women’s right to choose – Afghanistan is another. That tells you who our peers are on human rights now.

What I think upsets me most is the people (so often infuriatingly men) bragging about how they’ve been working towards this for years. What exactly were they working toward? Pressing their religious beliefs on others? Making sure that every child conceived is born? Making women live with an unwanted pregnancy? It’s ludicrous. And it’s going to be deadly for women in so many ways.

This law will affect women of low income the most. We know that 60% of all women seeking abortions ALREADY have a child. This is a choice between women and their medical doctor. A friend’s very religious mom said to me why is there even a law? She believes this is between a woman and her doctor. Now in America now have a law telling woman what they can do with their bodies, but there is nothing about men’s bodies.

Why do we want more babies born into poverty, minimal education opportunities and dire family situations? It’s a recipe for more crime, poverty and more societal woes. If we are ‘pro-life’ we should care that every child that is born to have the best upbringing, food, shelter, love and education. In states where these mandates are happening, they have records of terrible support for women, families and social assistance.

Conservative church groups promising formula, diapers, and baby blankets aren’t going to fix that. And those same people, who so celebrate these births are NOWHERE to be found once these kids got to school hungry, in crap neighborhoods with broken families and later become teens on the streets. Pro-life means caring for all stages of life and clearly that is not happening after birth with these groups. The same pro life people are okay with assault rifles wreaking havoc in our children’s lives and letting any 18 year old have a weapon meant for war. You can’t have it both ways people. You can’t care only for the fetus, but that is exactly where their concern ends.

What we need is a nationwide walk-out, a strike of all women and men who want to say no this is not America and we won’t accept it. We need to register every warm body to vote in the next election too.

Today this is how much this law affects our nation via the New York Times...

………………………….

We are officially in summer now and I am loving it. It’s been a bit warm, but the promise of summer gets me so happy, even if it’s just a late night trip to get ice cream or a day at our local beach. It’s not even the doing, but the thinking of maybe doing, that gets me happy. I am also enjoying people’s travel posts and seeing where in the world people are going. It’s a joy after two years of staying close to home.

Aptos Gems

Speaking of local travel, Max and I did a fun beach day last week, at Aptos. We left early before the traffic backs up on highway 17, and had a very long walk on the beach, called Sumner or to locals, Beer Can Beach, then hiked up the trail to Seascape Resort. I did this walk almost 5 mile that day), in flip flops, but I would recommend something with more support, especially for the path to the resort. You could make the walk longer or shorter depending on how far you continue down the beach.

We love this beach and it’s kind of a quiet one. You can walk both ways and going north you hit Rio Del Mar, another beach town with a few eating spots. We planned on grabbing lunch at Seascape, which is south of the stairs but they seemed to be understaffed. Instead, we walked across from the resort to the Seascape shopping center, a little enclave that is under the radar! We ended up at a very good Mexican spot called Palapas upstairs with ocean views and the nicest people.

Stairs to the beach and lunch at Palapas.

Afterwards we checked out the cute shops and I am now officially a fan of Seascape Foods a small grocery/deli/bakery and general store. I was amazed at the just made gourmet sandwiches and noticed they have morning burritos, the freshly baked cinnamon rolls, house made bread, salads, juices and fresh local coffee. The store is owned by a couple and one does the baking. Very fresh produce is everywhere, along with staples and snacks and just cut lavender from a local farm and plants! My photos don’t do this place justice..

I went home with a beautiful throw and a basket to hang a plant. I had to hold myself back from buying more baskets. The owners obviously have a good eye and you can find gorgeous home items. I can’t wait to go back. It was like a beautiful bazaar!

There is also a darling women’s store in this center, where I bought a new hat, a pizza spot, wine shop, flower shop and lots more.

My hanging plant basket, new throw and hat…

This is excellent stop to grab a lunch to go at the deli ( or eat on the benches there) or have a Mexican lunch with a view. For parking, this beach is accessed through a neighborhood, but you must go early!

How to be Italian!

A wonderful little book, How to be Italian, came on my radar last week and I ordered it straightaway. I am just beginning this fun guide which is a perfect summer escape and reminds us how to slow down, savor life and enjoy the little things. There are lovely photographs and chapters on Italian thought, culture, fashion, food and dolce far niente: the sweetness of doing nothing. If we can’t get to Italy this summer, at least we can try and live like one!

Rails Dresses

With the weather so warm, I just want to live in dresses that are light and comfy. A friend wears a lot of Rails which is a California brand and has the California casual vibe. These are the kind of dresses I will grab over and over again and make it easy to look pretty on the hottest days. Just add some cute sandals, a straw bag and pull your hair in a bun and you’re good to go. Some of the Rails dresses:

I’m loving this Valentina Dress in white, this green floral Constantine Dress

Also super easy is the Tara Dress in blue stripe and the Ashlyn Dress and the Arielle Dress..

You can find more Rails dresses here and here. The run pretty true to size and I am a medium in these.

Target

On my quick trip to Target this week, I spied some seagrass lanterns that are excellent quality and would be darling on a table or in the porch or yard. They come in two sizes, $20 and $25. I love when Target has something so affordable and looks nice too. I’m obsessed!

Target also has some of the new solar outdoor candles for these which is so easy. No more batteries!!

While at Target I also found a dress.. This sundress is so nicely made and our store had the only the floral Hawaiian print, but I loved it. The smocking on this dress makes it look expensive, is flattering and you could possibly get away wearing this without a bra. The smocking camouflages a lot. It also has pockets!

Just a few of the other prints it’s available in.. This is a nice quality dress!

Santa Cruz Beach House

This little beach cottage showed up on the listings this week, It’s the perfect size for a beach cottage and I love the shingle style and shabby chic look of the interior. This cottage has a view to the ocean along a river and it’s in a great area near Pleasure Point. It is so charming I had to share here. Now if it was only about a million or so less..

Listing here.

A hopeful video on NYTimes..

A lot has happened the past few weeks, but I haven’t stopped reading and doing more research on the gun violence epidemic. It’s heartening that we passed some legislation to help, though I wish assault weapons were banned, and it’s horrible the new Supreme Court ruling that people do not need a concealed weapon permit.

One heartening piece in this time of dismay was this video about how a CDC researcher who wanted to use gun statistics to end gun violence and and an NRA advocate in congress who crafted some of the laws restricting gun information, came to be dear friends. The man who crafted the laws, came to regret it and later was working for change and gun control. It shows we can come together and solve these issues when we listen to each other instead of retreating to sides. Both of these men really seemed like good people. If you can watch the video, I think its gives one hope, which we so need now.

Well that’s my meanderings for this week. Please stop by Elizabeth and Juliet’s blogs and see what’s on their radars this week..

PINECONES AND ACORNS

Weekend Finds

July 25, 2020 By kimwheeler 21 Comments

Hello! Just a quick post to share some goodies I found this week! Max and I started the weekend by venturing out to a small restaurant in town we love. It was the first time we have gone to outside dinner in our busy town of Los Gatos. The restaurant had tables well spaced, and we wore masks until we were eating, but still there was a lot of foot traffic about. We enjoyed actually being out, but I felt a little stressed about the whole thing. I think we might stick to take out in the backyard for a special nights, and try to support our favorite restaurants that way. What has been your experience with dining out?

I did notice everyone was dressed up! People are clearly making the most of their outings. I felt the same and wore a new top that has been gathering dust.

I have been trying to do more online shopping so I decided to try a new company, Faherty which has very cute summer things. I could use a few summer dresses and I find it difficult to find easy, light things. So many dresses I notice are of heavy fabrics, not something you want in a summer frock! This brand was started by two twin brothers from New Jersey and its growing. Their dresses are made of beautiful light fabrics and they are committed to sustainability and quality!

This dress is the Gemima dress and I bought it in small. It is light and soft and feel great on for a hot day. It has pockets! I may have been able to go down a size, but I like the length and the looser feel. I guess that is a personal preference. I think the quality of this is just tops- sewn beautifully and excellent fabric. So if you need a few more summer dresses – check them out. This is the same Gemima dress in different fabrics and also the sleeveless Isha and the Hana linen shirtdress. All darling! Now that I know Faherty and it’s quality I hope to add another dress this summer to my mix.

Nordstrom is getting ready to have their Anniversary Sale with fall items, but before that happens there are still some great buys on nice summer things. There are some serious discounts this year on account of people shopping so much less – so this is the time to grab any summer items you might want before they trot out all the fall looks.

I’ve been trying to notice the things I wear the most and replace those or get something similar and these Tory Burch sandals are on sale now so I am going to add these to my summer collection. My other pairs from her are 5 and 3 years old and they still look good.

These Roxy Oceanside Linen Beach Pants are also marked down to $29 are and something I’ve been needing in the wardrobe. Many nights I want to get comfy and my sweats and pjs are too warm, plus I think these would be good for the short trip we may take to Tahoe later this summer where I’ll need my legs covered at night. Looks like they run small from reviews, so I am ordering up a size.

I also just bought this light summer lotion that gives a little sheen for bare legs and shoulders…

Also adorable in the summer category is this Tommy Bahama coverup dress. I love the white and the pockets and would probably wear it as a regular dress too. I always like the quality of their things…

If you’re thinking the off the shoulder look isn’t for you, my stylish friend Cindy Hattersley did a post this week on off the shoulder looks. If the question was can you still so this look at a more mature age, the answer is absolutely! Cindy shows how great she looks in a lot of lovely looks- all chic and showing a little shoulder!

Cindy inspired me to pull out some of my own off the shoulder tops this week and I realized I cannot get through another summer with the lame strapless bra I have. I ordered this one from Spanx. It’s highly rated and people claim it actually stays up thanks to some smart grip technology – so I have high expectations! I’ll report back…

On the lingerie, subject the Faherty dress is very light and so I added a slip that I had from under another dress to make it less transparent. I think with the very light linen dresses, you may want to add a slip. You want a slip that isn’t heavy or tight fitting. This adjustable slip from, believe it or not, Amazon, seems to be the perfect size and weight for summer dresses.

Lastly, this film Summerland, opening next week looks appealing.. It’s coming to theaters and on demand. I could use a good British film about now!

I miss the whole theater experience.

Happy weekend!

Kim

My Summer Essentials

June 24, 2020 By kimwheeler 9 Comments

Does it seem crazy we are almost to July? Summer doesn’t feel like summer without the usual things that mean summer to me like travel, camping and watching Wimbledon! Nevertheless, it’s warming up here and though I’ve shopped the closet and cleaned out, I could use a few lighter things to get through the rest of summer. With all the home time, I’m wanting some easy things that feel cool with a bit of style. I’m sick of seeing myself in the same old shorts and Ts! Here’s a few things I am ordering in case someone might actually see me at grocery or we venture out to grab a lunch or dinner to have in the park…

Right now I am loving the shape and feel of tunic dresses. They are finally having a moment here after seeing so many women wear them the past few summers in Europe. This ombre Anthropologie tunic is something easy for at home and for errands out too. Just add some flat sandals, a bun in your hair and a basket as your purse and you have the epitome of summer ease. I also like this simple Sundry ruffled t shirt dress.

This cute oversized tote from Trina Turk would be adorable in an entry for shoes etc, as well as for the mom whose holding everyone’s things for the beach!

As a Californian, I live in shorts during the summer and I need at least one pair of white denim. These J.Crew shorts are very highly rated and have the perfect amount of stretch and roominess. They run slightly large and have a hem you can fold to adjust for length. I’ve already gotten a few people asking where I got mine, they are a flattering length!

One thing I wear all the time is flat sandals during summer and besides my Tory Burch flip-flops, slides are my go-to. I love the mix of textures here and the cork soul and mod look. I can see wearing these J/Slides from Anthro with so much and I like the slight heel.

This Nordstrom exclusive Chanel Paris- Biarritz eau de toilette, is a light crisp scent for summer with notes of mandarin. I’ve been thinking of adding it to my summer fragrances rotation which are all on the light side.

These Lilah B. Tinted lip oils are a little discovery I made after a free sample and they are perfect for summer for keeping my lips from drying out and for long wear color. It’s vegan and free of toxic ingredients too. Lilah B. also makes Marvelous Matte Creme Foundation that is nice for summer. I want to just be able to buff something on and go. I also like the face spray and the whole lovely line.

…..

I want to say thank you to every one of you who read, commented and supported my last post about the issue of racism in America. Your notes here and on Instagram were so good to hear. I loved your concern and care about the state of this country. Some weren’t pleased with me getting political here, but I look at this as a life matter and not politics. I truly believe if aren’t part of the change, then we are part of the problem. I’ve been amazed at the marches and calls for change in the past few weeks in little towns and big cities and across the wider world about this. It’s 2020 and it is unbelievable we still have to call out racism and hate in the United States and also know what part we may be inadvertently playing by remaining in our bubbles. Read my post and all the thoughtful comments here.

We have keep the momentum going in this country. I’m going to keep adding things to the end of each blog and I welcome your comments as well about how we can bring about change in this country. It’s all about holding up our end as individuals! This is a good post by local PBS station KQED about showing up for racial justice– what we can each do. Another place teaching us about the racism in this nation and trying to change it is the Southern Poverty Law Center ,an excellent place to donate, but also educate ourselves. They teach tolerance, fight hate, seek justice and right now are focused on voting rights -so important before this next election!

And may I suggest one more thing to watch? Black Panthers: Vanguard of The Revolution an Independent Lens documentary was our family viewing last weekend and it was excellent. Growing up in the Bay Area in the 1970’s, all those names and events unfolded on my nightly ABC 7 News that we still watch today. To see the power of these people and what they did together to fight the system of oppression was huge and we are living through something very similar right now.

Have a great week

Kim

It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth and Juliet. 🧡

This weekend I shared how I spiffed up the front with a few mums from the local Ace and Trader Joe’s .. Happily, these baskets I bought last year at Target are still looking good, and are available again. I link to them on the blog.
My wreath of petrified leaves bought last fall at my local @buncheslg florist seems to have survived the garage pretty well. ( Miraculously!)

I love these multicolored mums from Trader Joe’s. I missed them last year and they go fast!

Other fun things on the blog are an inspiring home book, some great pant options for fall, and a few cottages in Carmel that are for sale!

I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly P I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly Pinterest, but I’ve had it forever. I need to remind myself this quite often!

Our mindset is everything and I was inadvertently raised to worry about things. My mom was one of 8 kids and her mother warned them about the dangers of everything to keep them all alive in her mind. I think that was seeped in my dear mom’s bones and passed onto us.. by no fault of hers.

My brain defaults to that and I have worked hard to stop that sort of internal monologue.

Remember worrying never kept anyone safer. We don’t care more about someone by being a worrier. We just need to expect good things will happen.

Being a person who is always worrying is not good for those around you either. It hurts your family and their own feelings of security. The more I realize this, the more I feel the need to reassure, not stress and trust all will work out… and might even be fantastic!

Hope you all have a Happy Friday - and trust things will work out!

I’ll be back tomorrow with the weekend post!

I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to re I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to remember we may already have what we think we need to look great.

Right now the season is changing and I - like everybody else, am super excited for fall clothes, adding new things to my closet, and refreshing my look.

Hold off though. Before we buy anything or get ‘influenced’ from people like myself, we have to first look at what we have.

I am constantly reminded that the best dressed people have less clothes and wear great pieces on repeat!

Get in your closet and you may see you already have that perfect fall sweater or the ballet flat that’s everywhere!! The truth is your pieces may be cooler than the new offerings that are out there- and no one else will have them.

Make this a goal to go to your closet before you buy for fall and I promise you’ll shop smarter and get what you really love and need.

Have a beautiful Friday!! Here’s to sweater days soon. 🍂

I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I jus I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I just realized yesterday how very much I’m enjoying being at home especially now windows wide-open and the beautiful weather. We couldn’t be more lucky here in California when the weather is as it is now. 🧡

My tomatoes finally turned red and my new fig plant that I added to the front yard in spring already has figs on it! Marlo is enjoying the sunshine and fresh air too. She’s nearly 18 years old.

Nothing better than this late summer early fall…Still the goodies of summer and the promise of fun things in fall without all the heat.

If you didn’t read my weekend post there’s a wonderful inspiring story I shared about getting together with your neighbors and creating small micro neighborhoods…. and how the French love this time of year for socializing again too.. Lots to look forward to!

Have a beautiful day.

Last weekend it was a cool 48 degrees and it felt like November even though it was Labor Day weekend. We enjoyed some sun and breezes so being layers!

You can pack a lot in the two days with great hikes and walks..and food! Two good hikes- one at Ward Creek, another at Sugar Pine Point.. are perfect for now! Have some lunch by the river @riverranchlodge, take a walk on the lake and a drive on 89, end it by playing games and have a cozy dinner in with pot pies from Tahoe House bakery. ( SO good!)

Tahoe when it’s shoulder season is the best kept secret. Though normally Labor Day would be hot here. Make some plans to enjoy the fall here! 🍂

I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to Princess Diana, my original style idol. I recently found this book my dear mother bought me way back in the 80’s. Tucked inside was this torn page from American @vogue about this new girl’s style….Oh if they only knew what this young woman would be to the world. …

She was so much more than what she wore. She was a real life princess in her heart as well as title- touching so many lives. Who didn’t she care about or show kindness towards? She had it in her heart and that radiated in her face.

These are a few photos that are my favorites and a few that show her fun personality that always shines through.. 🩷 Of course everything she wore is back in style again like this vest - the caps, the blazers, and floral prints.

This day makes me hugely sad.
If it wasn’t for the nasty British press ( who are still horrific), and paparazzi she would be here.
