Classic Style- Hand It Down, Dress It Up, Wear it Out

June 2, 2017 By kimwheeler 9 Comments

I often think there are too many choices in life today  Life hasn’t been made better, but just messier. We struggle to for quality, but the quantity of life, and an abundance of things, like clothes, often prevent us from living the life we want. Classic Style by Kate Schelter is a guide to life as well as style and aims to set us straight in a world filled with too much spending, shopping and indecision. The author’s reverence for simplicity in our closets and regard for what is old, beat, handed down, thrifted, found and treasured is something I personally love.
Kate Schelter is an artist and has had spins as a Vogue photographer, celebrity stylist, and a brand consultant. This book is her little guide to life and it had me at the sub-title: ‘Hand it down, Dress it up, Wear it out.’ That is all I believe in a nutshell about clothes, style and spending!
Kate shows us the current culture’s obsession with new, shopping as a hobby and continuous consumption does not translate into style, but rather a messy life and wasted money. A beautiful life isn’t something you get with a credit card, but curated over time. Kate helps us appreciate the greatest hits from our pasts- like Vans, Vaurnets and Top-siders and as well as family heirlooms. In this view, classics never look old, and when they do wear, they get even cooler.
Classic Style will have you shopping your closet for past favorites, and coveting hand-me-downs again. Kate is practical as well as chic and reminds one that style cannot be had with the latest, newest and most expensive looks. Chic comes from your personal mix of old and new and sometimes McGyvered clothes. It’s all part of what creates real style, something that will not only make you look and feel good, but bring a calm to your life. Cultivate a look, a uniform and stick to it with daily injections of quirkiness and fun via little additions and tweaks.
Kate advocates for less and making firm decisions. Closets overflowing are a distraction from life’s more important and wonderful things you could be doing. You should love what you have and wear it all, but have less. Quality items are worth spending on. Treasure those things you have kept and wear them often, wear them out.
An original watercolor by Kate from her site.
Some of my own closet treasures are hand-me-downs. My grandfather’s lime green golf sweater, my mother’s 1960’s leopard corduroy tote and my father’s Coast Guard tunic are all items I wore and treasured over the years. I have a cameo necklace from a grandmother that is an Avon piece from the 1970s. It’s not worth anything, but sentimental value, yet it’s beautiful and people always remark on it.. My mother’s wedding and anniversary rings are stacked on my right finger and keep her in my heart always. My tiny diamond earrings, a five year anniversary present from my husband when we were young, are precious to me and will always be my preferred, over my larger and more expensive ones. These kind of the things give you a look all your own and tell your story too.
What you add to that mix should be things you find along the way- from your travels, from vintage stores, from happenstance and serendipity. Reading this will retrain your shopping brain.  Reuse, modify, shop your own closet and second-hand stores. The most lovely finds are the items no one else has and already exist. Expensive and new does not equal stylish.
The best message of this book? Frugality is cool and you already have all that you need.
I seriously LOVE Kate and her book. Check it out for a fresh perspective and to break yourself of the consumption addiction, add more simplicity to your life and hone your own brand of chic.

Hi Kim, I am very interested in this book. One of my new de-cluttering rules is to only buy books (I had a book addiction :)) that I absolutely adore and Kate's book is not yet available at my library…so I must wait. If being frugal is cool, then I am the coolest of the cool!

Love love love this! Of course for me it really means learning to buy and care for quality items in the first place. Do you offer lessons?

Hey Kim, great post. I am onboard and fully with you on this concept. I have been following a great simplifying blog called "Be More with Less" for a couple of years now. The author, Courtney, has helped me de-clutter and pair down our lives. I also have been using "ThredUp" (sell and buy used) for the last year or so. I love that it is becoming cool and that celebrities are advocating and using the service. You are spot on that classics are always stylish and jewelry pieces with a story are extra special. I'm going to look up Kate Schelters books – perhaps one is suited for my book clubs summer reading list. Thanks again for your thoughtful post. I love Kate's floral artwork by the way – also simplistic and beautiful!

Dianne, Yes! The library is the best place, or at a recycle bookshop, but may take a bit as it's just out last week. I am guilty of the shopping for escape too. Sometimes I'll just go browse and come home with a pretzel. I get the same feeling and less guilt. LOL!

And I would guess that most of us are doing the same.. wearing 20% -80% of the time!

I have a book thing too. I have been trying to do a annual purge/donate of them at the recycle bookstore and the library's friend donation store. Yes I am guessing frugal is coming back as cool. Just wait and see. I think being extravagant is on it's way out. Kelley you have always been cool though!

Yes isn't her artwork lovely? I'd love to have one of her florals someday. 🙂

Reality check on what’s really going on around her Reality check on what’s really going on around here! I’m so excited I am finally getting a Crate & Barrel atmoire/chest I’ve been looking at for three years. 🤯

In order to make it all work, we had to move everything around like Jenga and hope it fits. I’m liking having this older chest in my office and the chairs back where Griffin’s couch was.
Some people have opinions, and hate any changes, but I’m ignoring them despite the meows!!!🐱

Summerland is cutest little town off California’s Summerland is cutest little town off California’s Highway 101. So many people have never been, including myself until last week when we stopped and I fell in love!

The number one place here is the famous @godmothersbooks which had been on my list, and is a gathering spot for the community, besides two levels of the best collection of books and a cute courtyard cafe.

Next door is the @summerlandbeachcafe
and three incredible home stores- @porch_summerland, @thewellsummerland, and @botanik_summerland Botanik. There is much more, but we had to get back on the road. I need to get back there and explore more.

Pop over to the blog and read more about this hidden gem of a town, that’s deserves a stop on your next California adventure.

Thirty years ago today Max and I were married! Tim Thirty years ago today Max and I were married! Time has seemed to fly. It doesn’t seem so long ago my friends Ani and Chris told me I had to meet this guy Max. Our first date was Mrs Doubtfire! We talked until 3 am! We were pretty inseparable after that, though we were pretty opposite.
I learned to scuba dive and backpack for him -and he learned to love (okay abide) museums and Jane Austen films!
We had so much fun raising our boys. He is the best person I know and I feel so lucky.
Love you @trinidadmaxon

Today on the blog, I’m sharing the best summer sal Today on the blog, I’m sharing the best summer salad you will ever make. This is a longtime favorite from my friend Alex who is an incredible entertainer. She always makes everything California casual, and seemingly thrown together, but it tastes and looks fabulous! 😎

This salad uses the best of summer so make it soon!
The salad 🥗 is…
~Washed butter and a mix of greens (not bagged right now)
~Watermelon cubed
~Baby tomatoes halved
~3 ears of white corn (slice off uncooked and rinsed.)
~Red onion sliced
~Toasted pine nuts
~Feta cheese crumbled ( I substituted mozzarella here as my feta went bad.)
~Poppyseed dressing. Yes bottled. Sorry, but it is so good. I used Brianna’s as the original recipe calls for it.

Assemble and toss gently with the dressing. Top with pinenuts and blue corn chips crumbled are good too.

Alex’s salad is a great one to share at a gathering because it makes so much and can also be a terrific dinner with a protein added.

The full recipe on a card to save is on the blog, along with other delicious summer food ideas from five friends.
