Hello lovely friends. It’s that time of month again for our monthly style report with Cindy and Sarah. On this Signature Style we share our new season wishlists. I’m sharing things that are on my radar and some I am just dreaming about! Take the time before you shop this season to make a list as it will help you stay on track and buy the key pieces that will elevate your closet!
So many trends this year I like! There seems to be a lot of classics, preppy and tweed looks – think Ralph Lauren, and a kind of horsewoman aesthetic. I’ve always been a fan of plaids, and chunky sweaters layered over button-ups, worn with cords and jeans. If you have riding or cowboy boots still in the closet…those look great with these looks as does a ponytail tied with a scarf…Trenches are still in very much in as are longer coats.. If you don’t have a good one, this might be the season to grab one.
Basics have never looked more in, and you can make so many looks by layering..When you get a capsule of good pieces you can throw in the occasionally fun item like silver handbag, gold pants (like below), colored shoes, a dangly earring, or graphic t-shirt. Don’t be afraid to mix classics with whimsical pieces for personal style.
Make sure you also check out thrift and resale stores which surely will have many of these items, maybe even in cooler iterations. You can find some of those mom jeans and slouchy khakis (look in the men’s department), fair isle sweaters, fisherman knits, and even vintage Ralph Lauren pieces. Accessories too.. Hermes look scarves and brown bucket bags are a good ones to keep an eye out for as are older nice costume jewelry like hoops and chains. Currently my favorite earrings are two pairs my mom wore in the 80’s – silver and gold hoops that I treasure. While you are at it, don’t discount the guy’s closets and the men’s departments.
Some of my inspiration
I save these from Instagram and my Pinterest… Notice how people are mixing night pieces with tweeds and so on..Loafers with everything including dresses is big. Cool and cute and practical is to wrap a sweater over your jacket or blazer..as a scarf. An oversized blazer is a key piece, as are matching suits, 90’s basics, metallic or bright accessories, beaded necklaces mixed with metal, the colors of forest green, and sun gold yellows. Pick what speaks to you and put your own twist on it.

Some ideas for denim styling too..

After looking at my closet ( see last month’s closet cleanup post), these are the items I most want to add and are on my radar…
A tweed or checked blazer Madewell has a lot and this is a great one, Anthro also has this.. And J. Crew has this unusual plaid.

A blue button-up I love the shape of this one by Reiss, and there’s a more affordable classic at J. Crew also. I can do so much with this!

Lug sole loafers These Corinne loafers from Madewell..I shared on a Weekend Meandering post, and I just ordered as I didn’t see any others I liked as much!

Something in green..I’m a big fan of green tones and as green is big this year I want to get at least one pretty piece for my closet. Love the dark green of this Tuckernuck dress, and Claire V. who I just visited on my last post, has many gorgeous green bags like this crossbody.

A pair of black jeans in a straight leg.. These by Allsaints fit the bill perfectly. They can be dressed up or down..

Boot Crops to transition away from skinny...For those ladies who asked how go from wearing a skinny jean to wide leg jean without feeling like a block, (especially shorter gals like me), I suggest a boot crop jean. Often they don’t have that much boot shape, but look fresher than the skinny jeans and easy to wear.
For a 5’4 person like me, I can wear these J. Crew ones in regular for an ankle jean. You will look better showing some ankle or boot if you are on the shorter side. This pair by AG are another option to check out and on my list.

A cashmere sweater – I’m loving this with the colorblock sweater and …

….this Grandfather Cashmere Cardigan ( a Jenni Kayne dupe), in camel, grey or black…(both 25% off friends & family event) at Bloomies. Another item with so many possibilities. Love the idea of wearing this also alone no undershirt, with many necklaces..

Sneakers –these from Madewell and these from New Balance are both in contention…

Something Sherpa or shearling looking- a bag, jacket or coat.. I love this coat by J Crew. I saw someone wearing this exact look last winter with jeans and and it was sold out.. I love this tote.. the simple lines.. and this easy and cool sling from Anthro for winter!

Lastly something about these Birks in this luxe fall color I’m dying over! They’d be great for this California transitional season with jeans and sweaters.. and later, dare I say, with socks?? I haven’t gone there yet, but the kids love that look- including my college son.

A really fun account to inspire on Instagram is Krista Lavarusik who pulls together thrift finds like this $2 jacket to make stylish dupes of celebrity looks..And my all time favorite stylist Allison Bornstein who has loads of tips weekly on dressing better.

I hope you’ll make your own wish lists and see if it helps you make better shopping choices for your closet.
I’d love to hear what is on your list and what trends this season are you liking or not? Any other items that are on your radar I may have overlooked? Let’s hear please!
…And don’t forget to pop over to see what Cindy and Sarah have on their wish lists…
Thanks for being here!

You always inspire me! I wish I could wear those lug sole loafers with my bunion. I am sure I cannot. I agree those are the best I have seen. That color block sweater from Bloomingdales is to die for and I normally do not like color block anything. I agree with your comment about those of us who are shorter look better with a little ankle showing…excellent point. I have a jacket from IBU that was gifted several years ago that is very similar to that fuzzy J Crew one. Everyone always asks about it. Great post as always!
Just timeless! Each and every choice is ageless and chic! Your style is impeccable Kim. I would definitely try on most if it, probably swap light denim for dark, black for tan.. but otherwise spot in styling for your new season.
Dark denim is good and hard to find now!! Thanks Sarah loved your post too. xx
I have the Corrine loafers on order in the dried maple color. It’s back ordered until the end of October! Tried the Madewell Bradley loafer in black. Cute shoe, but not for someone with narrow ankles. I was a bit shocked at how heavy the lug soles are! I then found a Naturalizer Adaline loafer with a lug sole made of a much lighter material. They’re perhaps a little less “edgy” but maybe more appropriate for a 68-year-old? 😉
Love your ideas, Kim!
Me too Sarah!! Love the dried maple color.. I was torn and got the black. Good to know about the other loafer. Our madewell is being remodeled now so I can’t try anything. I will look up the Naturalizer loafer too. They actually have some cute things…nicely made. Thanks so much xo
Sarah,
The Naturalizer loafer is nice! I am also in my 60s and small boned with tiny ankles. 🙂
Thanks Dolly!
Great Great post Kim! I am going bonkers for GREEN too! A green pair of corduroys, a green athleta wrap and hopefully more green. One of my favorite colors and pretty greens are not always available!
Love the colorblock sweater too. I could rock camel that way!
Now I gotta go and search my closet for a pair of old straight leg jeans – I did buy flares last year. Just no mom jeans….
Gray I love the greens right now! Green cords would be awesome. Isn’t the sweater adorable? Good luck in the closet.
Kim, I love your style. Classic, timeless … but modern and fun. I’m dying over those Berks too … and, yes, I’d wear sock with them because I have cold cold feet! Well, maybe at not out in public. But never say never. Needless to say, I want everything here … one on Cindy’s post too … but I’m heeding your advice, taking note of what’s in my closet, what gaps need to be filled, etc. And, guess what, I need everything!!! Love this series so much. Now I just need Jim to go out of town while the packages roll in. xoxo
Thanks Juliet! You’re very kind. I do love classics- and a few fun things thrown in. Socks with Birks in the house for sure..Not sure how I’ll look outside, but maybe I need to try. I know I’m trying not buy less..but need a few things!
Now I am absolutely craving some sherpa, a jacket, those Birks, all of the above;)
Me too Lisa! xx
Beautiful Style!
Thanks so much!
I’ve always liked the Ralph Lauren look, being more of a traditionalist myself. Good to know the oversized blazers are still in since I bought one last year but haven’t had much opportunity to wear. I have some Cole Hahn loafers with a small lug sole. They must be 20 years old but I’m glad I kept them! Thanks for the looks. I’ll pass on green which is NOT my friend but is a perfect color for fall.
Wren I always love RL!! Good for you getting the oversized blazer.. The Cole Haans will also perfect! I love that you still have them. They are some beautifully made shoes. xo
p.s. Kim, I just got this post today, Oct. 6 but realize you sent it the 4th and some of the comments are from the 4th. Why the lag time, I wonder?
Wren thanks for letting me know.. This should have gone out yesterday morning! Let me investigate. xo
I remember those shoes from the 1980’s!
The loafers they were very uncomfortable for me!
Will be interested to know what you think!
The plaid blazers takes me back too!!
I’m old!
Well it’s a step in the right direction if they can get women out of leggings and gym pants somehow I donot see it happening here in California but hopefully I’m Wrong!!!!
I like the three quarter length jacket with jeans.
You must Dress for You and Nobody else!
Xoxo
Yes I am hoping they are better now!! You’re right a lot of these are pretty 80’s vibe aren’t they? Yes better than leggings all this.. Good advice as always. xoxo
Not sure how I missed this post! I love classics! My style to a t! White blouse, t-shirts, tween, houndstooth, plaid jackets and blazers, etc. Thanks for the inspiration Kim!
