On this post pretty pools, Tory Burch summer accessories, a new technology for finding your perfect foundation, True Foods kitchen, a great shirt for dad’s, tips for staying cool in heat, and more..
How has your June been going? Well went back to cooler weather, which I can’t say I am hating. That was after a super hot day last Sunday where my poor doubles partner succumbed to the heat at tennis! Thankfully my sweet friend was okay, but she had passed out and the fire department came and paramedics took her to have more tests at the hospital. It frightened me and reminded all of us that we haven’t had much time to acclimate to the heat this year.
A few tips to stay cool in the heat
They told my friend at the hospital her potassium was lacking and so important. Not all sport drinks have a lot and the one she had been drinking, not so much. We both hydrated the day before too. Usually I have a hard time with heat. That morning I drank an EmergenC packet with some electrolytes at breakfast, ate a banana during the match and put an nuum electrolyte tablet in my water.. ( I also pack them for travel and they help hugely with jet lag, etc.) She said they recommended the Body Armor drink at the ER which has lots of potassium.. So if you’re out on a hot day look for that.

Another great tip from my friend Hang, freeze a shirt and let it melt on you. I knew our 12:30 match in 85 degree would be even hotter on a tennis court.. I’m not good with heat and get a throbbing head and palpitations. I wet a thin long sleeve shirt and rolled it up and placed in a ziplock bag in the freezer. By the second set, I put it on and it helped keep me cool..I would do this for a long walk or hike or as a spectator on a hot day. You can throw it in your bag and have it if the heat is too much. Very helpful! Anyone else have tips please share!
Two days later it was so windy here we couldn’t keep the balls in the court, so California weather continues to be wacky. I feel so badly for all those affected by the fires in Canada. We Californians have been there.
On My Radar..

I keep face spray on my desk all year long. Since the weather is getting hotter now, I really appreciate it. Just a few spritzes while I work really perks me up.. On the hottest days, I place it in the refrigerator. My latest is this spray by OSEA is filled with good for you sea minerals and comes in small size for travel as well..
I wrote a sandal post this week, and a day later spied these cuties at J.Crew. They come in white and gold and I just love how they have them displayed with all their striped bathing suit pieces!
New Technology to get the perfect shade foundation
I was at Sephora this week and tried a new technology to determine your exact skin match for all their brands. On their IPhones, the beauty advisors snap a up close pic of your skin. Did you know Sephora is a Silicon Valley start-up and tries to be on the edge of technology? I had no idea. Well, I am a convert because it worked great. I have hard to match skin with yellow undertones and redness from rosacea and sensitivity.. I wouldn’t not have thought this was the right color looking at the bottle! I now think have never had a better matched color.
I love ILIA’s Limitless Lash mascara, and I bought their Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40. I keep hearing people rave about it, and I needed a higher SPF going into summer. ILIA Skin Tint is vegan, for sensitive skin, and formulated without fragrance, a California brand made in the U.S.
This goes on beautifully and covers as well as treats the skin. I was told I am shade Formosa ST4, and they also helped me choose the Serum Concealer (both awesome), according to my skin photo, which they will now keep on my Sephora file, and can be referred back to anytime I shop! So helpful. No more swatching and going home with the wrong color.
Go into the store and do this if you can!
True Food Kitchen
This week I took a day to go to Stanford, my favorite mall. It’s a drive for me, but so nice as it’s all open air and always has the most lovely flowers. I met my friend Jeanne and we had lunch at True Foods Kitchen. I did not know it was founded by Dr Andrew Weil, who created the anti-inflammatory food pyramid! The food is excellent. They have locations all over the nation. In the Bay Area we have one in Palo Alto, and in Walnut Creek. The menu has something for everyone..
I like to try and replicate what I eat at home after and this was a good one for summer- the chopped salad. It consisted of apples, marcona almonds, jicama, dried cranberry, manchego cheese, farro, greens and champagne vinaigrette…So good.

I also LOVED their sparking apricot tea, which is black tea steeped with apricots and mixed with fizzy water and a little lemonade. I will be making that for summer..and apricot season is coming. I also would love to recreate the crudité plate.
Father’s Day
I am taking my dad to lunch and a little excursion to a garden this week for Father’s Day. He always wants shorts for working in the garden and I order him sunscreen usually!
For Max, I bought him a few things at Rails. I know I talked about the women’s clothes, but they also have some really nice men’s things. I bought him this Carson shirt with a wood cut look print. He can wear on vacation, dinners out and also to work. I’m trying to get him to buy nicer pieces. Talk about a capsule wardrobe.. Max lives a very edited life! I’m trying to be more like he is. I hope he likes it.
The men’s collection at Rails can be found here. They have some great t-shirts and trunks too.
Tory Burch Summer Accessories..
While at Stanford, I popped into Tory Burch to see a few things in person. I ended up buying three things that I shared on a short video on Instagram .

I have had my eye on this crochet tote for travel and the summer. The nice thing is it can fold in half in your luggage for travel and you can use it by the pool or as a shopper/tote all summer long. I opted for the black. It also comes in pink and tan. (They already sold out online at TB, I linked to Bloomies above which still has it.) J.Crew has a very similar one a bit less.

Are you a fan of terry cloth? I adore anything terry for summer. When we were small our grandmother would make us coverups and matching towels for the pool with the most wonderful terry cloths. Any time I see it, I am transported back to the 70’s. Tory has the cutest terry tote bag and I bought the zip pouch to go in my tote and hold sun essentials. (These also come in red and green.) Echo also has a pretty terry cloth bag here for less.

Lastly, I had my eye on these Kira tweed sandals . I wanted to try them on, and they were instantly comfy, but run large. I bought a half size down. Already I wore them with a pink shirt dress and a black t-shirt dress. The tweedy material picks up the colors. They come in a leather black and white as well. For a lower price point, Steve Madden has something close.

These three things are good additions to my summer look and I know I will use them all for multiple years.. So I’m thinking they were good investments.
Pretty Pools
I can’t get enough of pretty pools photos in summer and Veranda has 48 pools to swoon at.. It was hard to choose a favorite, but I really love this below from a home in Sea Island with a gorgeous cabana.
Mom’s Demand Action Meeting
This Sunday our Mom’s Demand Action/Everytown is having its first meeting for the new Los Gatos chapter. If you live in town and are wanting to get involved in this great organization, send me a note. I’m excited there are more and more chapters of this great organization coming together and there are chapters in every state. It’s going to take all the grass-roots we can muster to change the gun laws. I feel like this is one organization that is getting things done.
This was our Signature Style week for June and Cindy and I chatted about sandals. You can read my Summer Sandal Edit here and Cindy’s Sandal post here.

If you missed last weekend’s post, I shared my June must list, tomato garden tips from my dad, a charming California home refresh, pretty slip dresses, and my new bed I just ordered.
Thanks for stopping by and happy weekend!

Kim! I’ve never heard the idea of freezing a shirt and letting it “melt” on you! So smart! I also need to buy some of those tablets to have… for jet lag! Some great ideas kim! I’m so glad to hear your friend is okay!
I have used that technology at Sephora! It does work! I went in thinking I knew exactly what I wanted and walked out with something completely different, but I love it! I think it finds the best brand and shade for your skin type?
Loved your sandal post!!
Xo
Thanks Annie! I know the frozen shirt is good.. Also I could not travel without the electrolytes. They help me so much!
Mine was was just color. Maybe they have another thing I missed? They are ahead of everyone with ways to get you the best item for you, which is pretty nice. xo
Thanks for the info about Moms Demand Action. I just connected with the Austin TX group.
Becky that is great! They are doing so much good work.
Kim, your blog has the most helpful advice of any blog out there! I will head over to Sephora. It’s time for the perfect match, especially as the seasons change and the depth of facial color changes a bit with pigment. I also fully agree on True Food Kitchen, there is one in the Country Club Plaza here in KCMO and the food is wonderful! Cheers!
Hi Erica, Thank you! I know that color matching is very cool. Glad to hear you have one in KC! I hope we get more of them.
Have a great week!
Good morning, Kim, Thanks for the tips on keeping cool. I haven’t needed them yet on the Central Coast but they could have helped in Cambodia where the “real feel temp” was 120 recently. Good reminder about Moms Demand Action. Sadly, there’s no organization in SLO but I will join when there is! Trying not to be tempted by buying anything new right now but thanks for sharing your picks. Happy Father’s Day to your dad and hus.
Hi Wren, Wow Cambodia sounds warm! You definitely can use those tablets for travel in those cases..
Maybe there will be one soon in SLO. You would think they would as it’s such a large area?
Happy weekend ! xo
Lots going on in your week and you make it look easy!
I love the casual chic vibe with the Tori Butch crochet bag and the sandals…so summery.
We have rain here this morning and I hope it helps with the forest fires….hope that meeting goes well and that a large group of moms can be the powerful collective that will initiate change needed to the gun laws.
Take care,
Leslie
Hostess of the Humble Bungalow
Hi Leslie, Gosh I am hoping you all will get some relief from the fires.I really feel for you all. Just unbelievable.
I know I am hoping this grassroots movement can make some change in this nation. xo
always a good read Kim! Thanks for the tip on the potassium water. My husband is always low on potassium so this will help him bring that number up. Have a great weekend!
Thanks so much Holly. Yes and the Body Armor seems to be the one with the highest potassium! Happy weekend. xx
Love your blog, I live nearby and we are about the same age, lots in common!
We’re heading down to Santa Barbara for the week and it’s barely going to hit the 70s, what is happening?! But as a gardener I won’t complain, the rain has transformed the entire state! I did buy the 5 gallon tomato plants instead of starting my own this year knowing we wouldn’t have our normal heat.
My summer tips: Wanted to say I really love the COOLA Makeup Setting Spray SPF, you spray it right over your makeup and it’s very refreshing so I don’t hesitate to apply it.
Also, just bought the new Dyson AirStraight and as a person with 2c curly hair that frizzes this is a game changer. Worth every penny to me (I figure I’ve spent more on serums, sprays, dryers over the years that haven’t even worked!)
Thanks xoxo
Also, I hope to meet you at one of the Moms Demand Action meetings soon 👍
I hope so too!
Hi Valetta!
I love that we have things in common and you are nearby. Santa Barbara! Enjoy and hoping you get some sun. I know this year is unlike the norm isn’t it? Good idea putting your tomatoes in containers. I think that was so smart as we aren’t getting the ground warmth we usually would! My dad says we need warm nights to really get things going…and that isn’t happening.
I am looking today for the COOLA Spray! That sounds great.
I have a Dyson.. Do not have curly, but for those who do, how great. You are so right the cost may be worth it versus all the products needed!
Thank you for the tips and have a good trip! xo
Kim! I need to get to Sephora for a skin match … how brilliant! As for freezing t-shirts it’s a great idea, but reminds me of childhood prank we played on the neighbor boys who mercilessly teased us. We froze their underwear on neighborhood trip to Yosemite. They were so mad! But seriously, what a scare for your tennis buddy. And all of you. So glad she’s ok. And the current weather is much more conducive to outdoor activities. I love those Tory totes and the Rails shirt you got for Max. I’m going to show it to Jim and introduce him to the brand. I’m ready to swoon over some pools … and hope that pool weather arrives for us soon. Not too hot, or too cold, but just right. Glad to know your town’s Mom’s Demand Action is full speed ahead. Happy weekend. xo
Juliet you have to give this technology for the color matching a try. OMG that’s funny about the boys and their underwear! I need all the details.
Yes scary about the heat and figure we would play on the only hot day we have had so far.. I much prefer this cool weather.
I like the shorts you picked for Jim! xo
Kim,
It sounds like a busy week! And crazy weather. It is unseasonably cool here and I am soaking it up. I am not a huge fan of humidity.
Thank God your friend is ok! Potassium is very important for our bodies. Thank you for sharing your electrolytes and supplements.
Your Tory picks are beautiful! I am sure you look fabulous! The bag is perfect for travel and the shoes look like they would be very comfy.
I had no idea Rails had mens clothing. I already purchased Bill a few linen pieces for Fathers day but I am off to check rails too.
I do not wear foundation but you have me intrigued with the perfect match using phone technology. So interesting. I started using a green vitamin e cream from Amazon at night and my skin is so soft. Fruit if the Earth is the brand, I believe Katie recommended it and as I said it is great.
I am sure that your dad will enjoy his Fathers day with you! How are your and your dads tomatoes I have 1 on my plant and 10 yellow flowers. I am using all of your suggestions and hoping for a bumper crop! I will keep you posted.
Beautiful pools!
Have a wonderful weekend Kim. I hope that you have a break from the wind and enjoy some summer weather.
xoElizabeth
Hoping our cool weather lasts a while. I had no idea how important potassium was…
Yes check out Rails! It’s great for guys too.
I will look up that cream Katie suggested!
So far our tomatoes are getting a bit taller. I have barely watered them. I do have some blossoms like you. My dad says don’t despair and we will have plenty of warm weather for them in July!
Happy weekend Elizabeth! xo
Thanks for the hot weather tips. I usually buy Essentia water, it does have electrolytes but I will have to compare it to the UnderArmor water. Sometimes my husband will mix Vitamin water with the Essentia. About 10 years ago he fainted while riding the exercise bike. Thank goodness he was at home! His doctor ran some tests on him they found a small hole in his heart (super common) but didn’t require any treatment other than taking a baby aspirin a day. He was probably just dehydrated. I had a case of heat exhaustion years ago so I am very cautious about being outside when it’s hot. I got a super bad headache and felt dizzy. I looked up the symptoms and I had most of them. Started drinking a lot water and Vitamin Water. It took about 24 hours to recover. I think my morning coffee contributed to it so be careful of caffeinated drinks! Age is a factor too unfortunately.
I love True Food and go there whenever I am at the mall with my friend. My husband likes it too. I have ordered that salad quite a few times with chicken in it. My newest favorite is the Ancient Grains Bowl. 😋
I have the same bed as yours only the posts have a little different carving. I like the new upholstered one you picked out. I found a bed at Pottery Barn and the style almost matches my Armoire. I ordered a wood swatch to see how close it is. I already have an upholstered bed in the other bedroom so decided to stick with wood since my nightstand and dresser are different I don’t want 4 completely different pieces!
Have a good weekend!
Linda
A good investment!
You made me laugh as I used that line first with my father as I wanted some CHARLES JORDAN boots!
He informed me an investment only goes up in value and the boots would go down!I still use that line to this DAY!It sounds good and who knows maybe they will go up in value as time marches on!
I hope your tennis partner is on the mend.
Xxx
Hi Kim! Such great tips on how to handle hot weather. I wish we would get some hot weather here in Maine, so I could use them, haha! Glad your friend (and you!) are okay. That must have been scary when she passed out. Love your Torch Burch finds! I love your casual California chic style!
Hi Kim,
Wow lots of information you shared.
I’m so glad your tennis gal pal is okay, passing out must have freaked you out. What a scary thing to witness. I’m so glad she is okay and you too. It sounds like you know how to take care of yourself with intense heat. I appreciate all you had to share.
How wonderful you have found a perfect foundation that is so well suited for your complexion and skin type. Leave it to technology.
We have a few locations, True Food is awesome. It’s always packed, not easy to get into. The Chopped Salad is so yummy, funny we both order the same salad. Dr. Andrew Weil and Sam Fox and maybe another partner started True Food. They have been very successful. Restaurants are one of the most difficult businesses to run.
How sweet that your grandmother made you matching coverups and towels in terry cloth. What a wonderful memory. Your grandmother sounds like she was “Wonder Woman,” from what you have shared in the past.
Happy Father’s Day to Ray and Max. Knowing you, they will be loved on in a very special Kim way.
xox 💗
Hi Kim, I’m very behind on blog reading due to a few of busy weeks and getting ready for our trip to Germany on Sunday – we are going to Berlin, then taking a ‘bike and barge cruise’. Looking at the weather forecast I will definitely need your cooling tips. We actually have these cloths that you wet, wring out, then can drape around your neck – the material is kind of like those Swedish cleaning cloths if you know them, only thinner.
That salad sounds wonderful – please put the recipe in a future post if you do manage to replicate it!
I’m pretty sure that Sephora is a French brand, but nevertheless – what a great idea! I’ll have to see if they have that capability in our stores here.
My husband actually has more clothing and shoes than I do – mostly I think because he wore unform for so long that he didn’t really wear his clothes out! Hope Max has a great Father’s Day, I’m sure he will love the shirt!
