Today a group post with lots of ideas on how to create a more cozy bedroom for fall and winter. Whether you are having houseguests for the holidays, or just need to bring a warmer feeling to your own little sanctuary, we have some inspiration for you!
Our own bedrooms usually gets the shirt shrift when it comes to home decor. If you don’t need to do up a guest room, why not make your own bedroom more of a retreat? A few months ago, I bought this new bed that I love. I had also chosen wallpaper and a rug. Max hated the feel of the rug and the wallpaper was on backorder… Sigh, so all that is still up in the air.. I do know am going to order this Serena & Lily rug.

As of now, the bedroom looks much the same except for the bed. I had added our duvet for fall. I always keep a white coverlet over the sheets Similar coverlet on sale now .

Even though this space is in flux, I thought I could make it cozier and more inviting using what we had in the house and a few fun things I had bought lately and had on hand..
I had these new pillow covers from the UK trip and next to this mix of books and thing was my jumping off point for a room vibe..

This is what I pulled together..

I also found new nightstands a few months ago. I saw this matched pair at Homegoods. I went home and googled the brand and found them on the Bergdorf Goodman website and a few others so went back and grabbed them.
Did you know adding darker elements to an all white room can help warm it up during fall and winter? I feel like it worked in here. So did a few other things…
Elements to Cozy Up a Bedroom
- Layer on textures like faux fur, velvet, sherpa and fleece that give a good feeling.
- If the room is light, add earthy elements like chestnut browns and warm hues in the darker months.
- Punctuate with some bits of black like a pillow.
- Use plaids or tweeds in throws or pillows.
- Layer lambswool or fluffy rugs.
- A warm scented candle.
- If it’s near the holidays, add a small wreath or garland, above the bed or strung on the headboard, or wired twinkle lights.
I had fun changing my room up. Usually I just do this for guests or before my kids come home!
I know it’s a little early for the holiday decor, but I used a plain wreath I had found at Homegoods that I had planned to bring to my cabin, and popped it above the bed with just a tack! This is a cute one similar size to my wreath.
Then I used two euro shams in velvet from Pottery Barn I had bought and was saving.. I love this cognac color, but they also come in a loden green, merlot, grey, and a cobalt blue. They have an organic feel to them with a raw edge.

This also gave me the chance to add the wool pillow covers I bought in London at H&M Home. They no longer have them online, but I was excited to see CB2 has a near identical pillow from a London company Studio Anansi, also in a soft wool like mine and even better you can choose a down or alternative insert that comes with.
Then I tossed in this black pillow on my reading chair for some depth. This pillow I had bought for Griffin’s room. (He’s at college, and they end up on the floor anyway!)

Pillow is from CB2 from another year. They do have quality throw pillows and this black woven wool is so nice same size… and so is the black boucle on right, slightly smaller.

I had bought two plaid throws from Italy at Homegoods a few weeks ago. I also have always liked the unexpected mix of animal print with plaid. I don’t see them online, but this is similar.
As we don’t have a rug in here yet, I used two of our sherpa throws I use at the cabin, near the sides of the beds. It’s wonderful to step out onto these on a cold morning. I may keep them where they are on top of the rug when it comes. I love the layered rug look in the cold months. These little rugs here on sale.

I also added one of my many faux fur throws at the end of the bed.

Some good faux fur options – Click on photos for link.

A few other similar items in this post..the bedside tray and ginger jar.

I hope this post inspires you to use what you have and change up things for a warmer feel for these colder months.
I am already loving this transformation and have been sitting in this room reading with a cup of tea in the morning and a soft throw! Definitely changed the way I feel about it.

Your room looks so beautiful for Fall and Winter. You must love it!!
Thanks Mary Ann. I am enjoying it a lot more like this. Feels cozy!
I love the look of this room! You created a cozy, but fresh and beautiful space. I am inspired!
Thank you so much Janet!
You have such a good eye Kim! Love the tweaks you’ve made… really changed it up. What a find those bedside tables. Yes sheepskin rugs… a staple in NZ…. We even throw them over the car seats back home 😂.
What a gorgeous hummingbird print… inspired to find one for my home…. one of the joys living in the Bay Area seeing these jeweled birds every day.
Right, off to style daughter’s bedroom as home for long weekend… thanks for the inspo!!!!
Thanks so much Fiona! I love those rugs. They just really make everything so cozy. I didn’t know they were a NZ thing, but makes sense! I have them on my kitchen chair in Tahoe and also on a bench in my entry..Love the car idea.
I was lucky to find the print a few years ago.. I love hummers too! They are so pretty.
Have fun with your daughter’s room. I have to do this for Griffin’s too.
Kim—wow, so cozy and welcoming. Love that it has both feminine/masculine elements—so important to remember it’s our uubby’s space, too. Love the plaid/ animal mix. Enjoy this beautiful room all fall and winter!!
Thank you Carol! I know love the masculine bits too..Gves it warmth I think and with men they probably appreciate it too.

Such a cozy winter room, I love it!
Thank you! x
Hi Kim
I cannot seem to get my bedrooms in this home together, that is why I shared Colin’s! I am glad to hear someone else feels the same way. You have inspired me to do better! I don’t change them up with the seasons, I am too lazy or cheap, I am not sure which! Always love seeing your home it is just perfection in my opinion!!
Well, they are not what we see everyday and so easy to push them off right? I’m trying to have a little more fun with these and now I’ll get Griffin’s cozier…You always inspire me Cindy!
Kim! First of all I just love your new bed. You must be so thrilled with it. It’s frustrating about the wallpaper and rug … but it will all come together soon enough. In the meantime, you’ve created a warm, cozy sanctuary. And on a today like today how great to grab a book and curl up?! xo
Could you share where you did find the hummingbird print in your bedroom? Room looks great.
Hi Barbara! Thanks so much. I have had that hummer print a long time. I can’t remember where I bought it, but there are similar ones here you can buy in a set or individually.. https://rstyle.me/+qutxM12QecyIgPHV00KiMQ
I will keep searching and see if I can find more. xo
