On this post, cool spots we discovered in the little town of Waimea on the Big Island, things to help beat the heat, some summer sale things and more..
Hope you are having a nice July Fourth weekend. We were going to go to Tahoe, but with the extreme heat, that got shelved. Actually, I was sort of relived as it is really crowded on holiday weekends and our small cabin does not cool down at night and can be quite miserable when it gets in the 80 plus which it is.
We went straight into a heat wave. I’ve been holing up inside watching Wimbledon, which I am so grateful for right now. We mostly stayed in for the fourth. Max and Griffin went kayaking in Santa Cruz early before it got hot..I can’t complain because I know how lucky we are most of the time not to suffer with these extreme temps like other parts of the nation do. Still, it’s not the norm for us to have heat so many days in a row. I can’t wait until our cool nights return.
Five Days in Hawaii

Last week Max and I did five nights in a hotel without the kids and for us west coasters it was an easy getaway. To us, every day in Hawaii feels like 3, as we get up by 5 since we are on California time. We really just do a lot of reading and swimming and eating.

When it is just the two of us, we try and stay at a resort. Last year we did the lovely Mauna Kea. This year as it is under renovation, we opted to stay at the Four Seasons at Hualalai. It was a bit of a splurge for us, but with all the hotels on the island getting bought and upgraded, they were all pretty expensive. We went in June, which doesn’t sound like it’s off season, but it is. We had a very quiet resort and left before all the families arrived for the fourth of July and through August. If you book early, you can get a better rate in June.
We stayed on the property for most of the time, except for a few dinners out. There is so much beauty in Hawaii. The birds and flowers are one of the reasons I love this island so much. Our resort was lovely.

Hawaii has many charming towns and we always make sure we get out and visit one for the day. This time we did a day trip up country to Waimea ( about 30 min drive) to go to the farmer’s market on Saturday. The market is on the Parker School grounds in Waimea. There were fruit stands, jams, wood work, coffee bags made into totes, beautiful clothes, jewelry, incredible flowers and tons more. Live music and lots of food and families enjoying the day.

Max and I bought a macademia nut cinnamon roll to share and also got a pea blossom latte. Max also brought back a macadamia tart. We can never get enough of macadamia nuts!
Afterwards, we stopped down the street at a cute open air shopping center called Parker Square.

The gems here are the Waimea Coffee Company, which has a good crowd, great coffee and a fun lawn that kids and pets can hang on. The Waimea General Store sells pretty cloth napkin sets made in Hawaii. I bought a few for gifts. There is a clothing shop called Hula Moon where I bought some cute long shorts.
Next we made a stop at Surf Camp down the street. It’s got two outposts with another in Oahu. They have a small and cool collection of clothing for guys and gals, bags ( I bought a cute straw purse), books, candles and more. They also have a coffee shop. Their goal is to be a place mainly for people who live on the island and visitors second. I think that is nice. There are cute tables to have a grilled cheese and latte on the patio and it’s sort of a small gathering spot. I bought my son the a striped t-shirt and cord shorts there that were SO soft. He loved them. Good prices too and nicely made. It’s right next to the famous Merrimans which is a fantastic spot to have a dinner (or lunch) in the Big Island.

Merrimans was the topic of conversation with Ed O’ Neil, who I met at the general store in Hualalai. He loves that place and goes for lunch. Ed is the actor who played Al Bundy on Married With Children and Jay Pritchett in Modern Family. I was just getting my breakfast yogurt and green juice from the Hualailai General Store and he was on the adjacent couch. I was the only person there and he said hey when he finished a phone call so I said, ‘Are you Ed?’ He said ‘ I sure am.’

Max and I chatted with him for a half hour. My dad is a big fan and asked if he was like his character Jay and would say absolutely. He’s funny and nice and talkative. He has a house there in Hualalai and goes often. He just finished a new Hulu series called Clipped playing the racist coach Donald Sterling of the LA Clippers basketball team.. I think it’s four part thing. You can watch the trailer here. I kept running into Ed in the five days I was there and he likes to swim in the ocean in the morning and he gets around on a moped. My dad was thrilled and I should have gotten an autograph for him. I felt kinda shy to ask.
If you are wanting more info on the beautiful Big Island, I wrote about the historic Mauna Kea hotel (under renovation), and about the newest hotels like the Rosewood and the Mauna Lani Auberge -and my tips for scoring a good rental and where to look. More information on Hualalai here.
On My Radar..beating the heat

I am really sensitive to heat and so is my pal Amy who brought these genius cooling towels to tennis this week and they are so GOOD! You wet them and keep them in their plastic containers. You can freeze them and take them out to wear around the neck during a hot walk, or tennis like I did. They are hugely helpful and if you have any days coming up where you are out in the heat all day, these will lower your temp a lot. They come in packs of four here.
I’ve been making sun tea again in the yard in the morning like my grandmother did when we were young. It’s so easy just put teabags of your choice in a big pitcher of filtered water for an hour or so, covered by a napkin or tea towel. It also can work overnight in the refrigerator. We love adding lots of fruit and this week I discovered it is particularly good with apricot and Cutie slices. I keep it in the frig all summer. One of my favorite teas is Sport Tea, which is caffeine free, is healthy and tastes a little sweet with no sweetners at all. Sometimes I’ll mix a black tea and a mint, or a green and a citrus.
On my trip to Hawaii I brought my genuis BloqUV Wrap and it was nice to protect my legs, shoulders and feet when I was getting too hot. It was also nice to whip out of my purse when I was sitting at lunch or dinner and my neck or arms were getting too much sun. It’s light and has a cooling feel. It can easily go in the purse and yet can work as a shoulder wrap, a sarong, and it dries fast as it’s like swimsuit material. Hugely recommend one for hot vacations and just to carry around in your bag during the summer months!
After leaving Hawaii, I want to keep that chilled Hawaii vibe and Max recommended this album he was listening to on Spotify – Ukulele Disney by my favorite Ukulele player, Jake Shimabukuro. I am not a big Disney person to be honest, but this little collection of some of the most upbeat and charming songs sounds really great done by Jake. A perfect album to listen to this summer. You can also buy the album here if you don’t have Spotify.

I got to the newly opened J. Crew this week at Valley Fair and it’s a smaller, but lovely store. I bought this striped dress, but the blue floral is also lovely and on sale- plus another 60% off with code JULY. The stripe was marked down in store only, but I’m now wondering if that was an error.. Anyhow, these dresses are made of the softest cotton voile and feel so light even with a lining. Love the pockets too. This new store feels like the old J. Crew when Jenna was in charge. It is pretty and curated and has loads of good summer things.
Wimbledon Style
Are you enjoying the tennis outfits? Tennis dresses are back more than ever versus separates.. It’s been fun seeing what the players are wearing.
Extra pretty was the dress that was made by Wilson ( by the way, they have a new store with a tennis focus at Valley Fair), for Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk. They also made her wedding dress for her and the Wimbledon tennis dress that was a nod to the wedding dress with a sheer layer over it that is removable…. So lovely! You can buy the dress and the overlay and 20% of the proceeds go to young tennis players in Ukraine.

Next week I’ll have more on Wimbledon and spectator style…
This week in our nation..
I’ve been trying not to post much this year about politics as it has been relentless this year, and I know we all want escape sometimes from it. God knows I do. Democracy has really got me down this week and I need to vent a bit.
The Supreme Courts rulings involving the presidential immunity was awful. The president can have immunity? He is above the law? Even when inciting a riot after losing the election? We are okay with that? Then the Chevron ruling that allows polluters to pollute with less interference and oversight from the EPA.. All when we know more than ever how clean air and water affects the planet and our lifespans. WHY are we okay with this? The Supreme Court has lost us. I no longer feel the highest court is doing what is right for us all.
I was also upset hearing that this week my son’s wonderful University of Utah that we adore, dismantled all the cultural support centers in response to an anti-diversity law Republican law makers in Utah passed in January. The U went above what was asked, and closed the Women’s Center, the Black Student Center, and the LGTBQ Center while the students are away for summer. These centers are a lifeline for students who need aid, support, and community. How dare they do this just to please an ultra conservative agenda? If you can imagine, Utah has a lot of people who need these supports in very religious and white state. Those who don’t fit that mold and don’t go to BYU often end up at the U, and these centers are literally life saving. It really made me angry as I am always telling people what a gem this school is.
As women, we need to speak out more. Our rights to medical choice has already been stripped of us and the Republican Party plans to do more of it concerning birth control and infertility per their Project 2025 agenda. My grandmother and mother would be sick knowing Roe was overturned. I often think we women care too much about being people pleasers and we don’t share enough rage about this. I feel like it’s partly how we got to where we are right now. We women alone can decide the next election. We have so much more electoral power than we realize. Register here to vote and see when your state primary is.
Thanks for letting me share that here.
Other ( fluffy) things..
Serena & Lily is having their July Fourth Sale and my Salinas Rattan Side Table is marked down almost $150. I love this little table with a glass top. It’s instant pretty and California chic. My favorite towels, my Malibu Chandelier, and my Alamere dining room rug are all also on the sale. All of the sale things here.

My friend Molly’s tour is up on Homeworthy. So nice to see Molly in person and her Maine house is even more gorgeous on video. There is so much inspiration seeing what Molly did with this property when she retired from a 30 plus year career in D.C.! I adore her..
Max and I are taking the boys up to his hometown of Trinidad in a few weeks. It’s a tiny beach town up north in Humboldt county. We are renting a beach house and I am excited to have a long weekend up there in the charming town. I can’t wait to share more about it with you all.. The Mercury News had an article this week about all the windswept beaches that are up that way and Trinidad beach was the top picture. If you want a break from the heat, it’s a great summer road trip area.

Tuesday I’ll be back for July’s Signature Style with Cindy and next weekend I’ll share what I packed for the Hawaii trip.
Last weekend I wrote a postcard from the Big Island, a few bits about Hawaii, the books I read, and a couple of good things I brought with me.
Happy long weekend!

Good morning Kim!
It looks and sounds as if you had a wonderful and need break in Hawaii. Reading, eating and relaxing are my favorite way to take a break. Ed sounds charming. I will admit that I have not watched either show but have seen him in interviews. How fun to have had a chance to talk to him, I am sure that your dad was thrilled.
Speaking of your dad, how are his tomatoes? And yours?
The weather has been brutal here and it is only July. I hope that you see some relief soon. I don’t mind the heat during the day but I cannot sleep when it is too hot. Stay inside and enjoy Wimbledon. Love the tennis dresses you shared.
Looking forward to seeing more of Max’s hometown! It should like a great weekend away with your kids.
Molly was a natural on Homeworthy and her house it so beautiful. It is fun to see the layout and to hear the stories of each collection and why she built the house and rooms the way that she did.
Vent all you want about the state of the nation, hopefully it will encourage others to vote. These are scary times, and the entire world seems to be on edge. We really need to “clean house” but that its’t going to happen anytime soon.
Have a wonderful ay Kim!
xo
It’s so fun to read about your Hawaii trip—how lovely to be able to visit there (fairly) easily! We’ve been to Maui, Oahu, & Kauai but not the Big Island so I hope we’ll make it there one day. Thank you for talking about what’s happening in our country. It’s beyond despicable what the Supreme Court conservative justices have done. I guess they are doing exactly what they’ve been bought & paid to do, but it’s still horrible. It’s incredibly important for all of us who want democracy to survive to vote in November. How sad to have had to “celebrate” this most recent 4th of July knowing what they’ve done. We broke away from a king for many reasons. It’s just exhausting what we’ve been dealing with the past 8 years (& really, since Nixon). Sorry—getting off my soapbox now. It’s just that this matters so much.
Your instinct to keep your political thoughts to yourself is correct. Please heed it. There are enough political websites to turn to without having to have a lovely post on travel and fashion disrupted by political views. I appreciate that you have them, I just don’t want to know them. And yes, I know I have a choice not to read your blog.. I didn’t want to have to make that choice .
Sue, This is how I operate the blog. When times feel desperate, I will discuss and share.
Sorry if you don’t want to know my views. Now you do.
Maybe you can do better too.
I agree with Sue. However, if you must air your views, why not talk about the horrible debate performance by Biden and how the media has gaslit the American public for years. Our country is in great peril because the world is watching, many of whom would like to see America perish. Our problems are way greater than those you mentioned.
Jeanine, I have to say if there is any gaslighting, it’s been by the Republican party pretending to be pro-family and pro-life, while allowing hate and guns to proliferate in this nation. Caring for our fellow man, and the water and air they breathe, isn’t their concern. How about women’s healthcare and kid’s lunches? So many real consequences for us on a fake platform of family and Christ. None of their actions have been Christian or charitable.
Our nation is in peril because republicans have sold their souls to worship a fake god called Trump.
Kim, Enraged Kim is my favourite Kim! Seriously though, I think you’ve been fairly restrained recently, but now is the time to bring out the big guns (metaphorically of course). And for a Republican to talk about gaslighting is really the last straw. The lies just keep on coming! It is difficult to talk about these things with people who you think of as friends, so I commend you for using your blog in this way. By now everyone that reads here should know that, as well as the lovely clothes and beautiful homes, you will not stop talking about the state of your country and the danger to your democracy (and, let’s be honest, to the rest of the world too). And I’m so heartened to see that most of your readers commenting here agree with you. I’ll be honest with you, as an outsider I don’t know if I trust Americans to do the right thing in this election; I very much hope to be proved wrong.
Patricia I am cracking up! I am really fired up though about these things and it has gotten to me the last week with all these events I just had to share. Agree the lies by the Republicans and the upholding of a felon and the flipping back to support him after Jan 6! How can anyone support them or have faith in them?
I feel fortunate to have such a great group of women reading here that are so eloquent and sharp! They inspire me too and give me hope. These last day of the two elections in UK and France are hopeful! x
By the way Kim, if you don’t already, have a look at Joyce Vance’s Substack called Civil Discourse – she does an amazing job at explaining legal matters and right now is digging into Project 2025.
Okay looking it up now! Thank you! x
Thank you for speaking out about the very real, and very scary truths of the current Republican Party. There is no longer a genuine and respectful “political differences” situation. It is now OK vote for old guy #1 and hit restart in 4 years or vote for old guy #2 who wants (in his own words) to be a dictator. If anyone disagrees, research Project 25. It is time for us to stop worrying about being polite or offending people and get real.
Sandy I could not agree more. Biden is currently our president and I know what life is like.
He may not be perfect, but things are running fine and he is working for more gun control, women’s choice, better schools and college tuition help, infrastructure and more good for us all.
The 2025 Project is beyond frightening.
Damn straight. We all need to get real. If the Republican agenda doesn’t affect you now, it will soon.
Couldn’t disagree with this sentiment more, though you have a right to your opinion, of course.
After 9 years of this careening train-wreck called Trumpism we need to wake up to democracy on the precipice.
I admire Kim for courage to speak out, regularly.
The fact that even suggesting a convicted criminal can be on a US Presidential ticket is “political” and not existential highlights the current peril we face.
So here’s a reading recommendation for everyone here: “ON TYRANNY” by Timothy Snyder. Will take less than an hour and I think will be revelatory.
Keep it up, Kim, love your blog, ALL of it.
I agree Valletta, Snyder’s book is a must read.
Thank you Valetta. Getting the ‘On Tyranny’ book now.
You are awesome. xo
Kim,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the frightening and despicable actions of today. A few people commented to me this week that they hope this will not be our last celebration of independence. Keep encouraging people to vote – it does matter!
Of the many things I love about your blog, I also appreciate that you dont stick your head in the sand or shy away from calling out all things wrong with the state of our country right now. You get the facts out there and point out responsible parties and what to do as an individual-no matter how much of a hopeless case it seems sometimes. Thank you for that!
Thank you Catherine. I just was feeling scared as an American this week- and worried. I think it was warranted. Thanks for the support!! xo
Hi Kim,
I love your blog and always look forward to reading your posts. I sincerely hope that your posts will continue to be a lovely little escape from all of the problems in this world.
Kathy
Hi Kathy, Thank you. I hope things improve in this world and I think it’s okay to occasionally remind us we need to be actively working on this.
I agree women should speak out more and make their feelings known. I don’t believe the federal government should be dictating what we can and cannot do with our bodies. It should be up to individual states and what their people want as far as abortion and other women’s health issues certainly liberal California would be different than conservative South Carolina and as you have said many times diversity is good. So let’s be tolerant of each others thoughts and desires..
Judy, Following your logic, you are saying that the federal government should not dictate choice, but state SHOULD dictate? What makes you so sure the women of red states want their choices taken away?? Is that tolerant?
If you are for women having choice and tolerance, then the logic would be that each person decide what is right for themselves, and their beliefs correct? Not a choice made for one by a government.
That is what is happening in places like Texas where women are losing choice and it is having catastrophic consequences for women in high risk pregnanacies who can’t get care. They have no choice. The doctors are at risk losing their jobs by helping them. Women are suffering sepsis and some losing their fertility, and often near death and have to leave the state for help. That is not choice, it’s extremism creeping into healthcare.
Kim, I love your blog and always look forward to your posts. As a fellow Californian, I especially appreciate your love of our wonderful state. And like you, I am scared for our Democracy. I agree with you that as women, we have much more power than we realize, and I hope and pray we stand up and exercise that power at the polls. Please keep sharing your thoughts and opinions. We have to speak out and allow each other that space.
Judy
Judy, Thank you. You are so right about women holding the most power in this nation! We need to take control this election, as things are going off the rails and we need to right this nation. We can do it.
Hoping more women get in power too. We need their voices and their intuitiveness and their empathy for the human condition. We make great leaders. x
Hi Kim,
Just a few words of support. I love hearing about your travels, family, lifestyle, and home.
I also appreciate that you are a well rounded woman with thoughts on politics, climate change, women’s health, and the safety of those who are not just white, middle class, straight folks.
Your blog is a reflection of all of that. I hope you always share your thoughts with us.
Lisa you are so kind. You made my day. Thank you. x
Your trip looks amazing! Hoping to get to Hawaii one of these days. So inspirational! We are big Jake fans too and have even seen him in concert. Definitely go if you ever have the chance. And I always appreciate people’s points of view – even if I don’t agree – but in this case couldn’t agree more. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Laura! I hope you get to Hawaii too. We were lucky to catch Jake in Hawaii a few years ago when he had a surprise concert at the Mauna Lani. I’ve been a fan ever since.
Thank you so much.x
Kim,
I look forward to your blog, each and every week. I love your sense of style and always enjoy reading about your shopping excursions, as well as your clothing, jewelry, and accessories recommendations. You are an inspiration!
That said, I, too, encourage you to continue to share with your readers your concerns regarding the assault on our democracy. These are scary times and it’s important to stay informed and, most of all, VOTE this fall. Our country’s future depends on it (and I don’t think I’m being hyperbolic)!!!
Maureen, Thank you! Really appreciate that so much. You’re so right, we need every one of us to vote!
Thank you for speaking out….I absolutely agree that women must be more assertive
and start rallying our support for issues that are so vital to our future. I’m sure some of your readers will not be happy with your opinion, but I’d like to step up and say “Hooray” for you.
Thank you Gail so much! x
What a great trip to the Big Island. I so much enjoy reading about your travels.
You have every right to speak to your mind on our political situation. Women together can make an impact sharing our concerns and voting. It’s disgusting how the Supreme Court has stripped away so many rights. The courts needs to be revamped! I may not see this occur but it must be done.
Don’t know much about Trinidad but will look forward to your experience there. Have a good weekend. Thanks for your interesting and fun blog.
Hi Sheila, Thank you.. The court is frightening and I cannot even believe how we got here. Who nows what else is coming if we don’t speak up, step out, and get active?
Will report back on Trinidad soon! xo
Kim—I always look forward to reading your blog. You are charming and funny and offer abundant detail. But what I love most is that you tell the truth, acknowledging that no cute striped cotton dress will provide adequate comfort if we allow democracy to fail. Please please keep speaking out.
Gosh thank you Deborah. So nice of you… and I love this comment! I could not agree more. x
Kim,
I never respond or leaves replys to the blogs I follow, but I must applaud you for thoughtful and sometimes controversial comments regarding this tumultuous time we are living in. Thank you for your bravery, compassion and empathy as you speak up for our rights.
I appreciate that you do not bend your beliefs for the comfort of others!
Gina
Gina, Thank you for that. I don’t know what impact my thoughts have, but I really love that so many feel the same. It gives me hope!
Hi Kim,
Thank you for standing up for democracy and women’s rights. It’s been a dreadful week. I look at the recent election in England and wish we could have that sense of optimism about the future. I have zero faith or respect for the Supreme Court now and l also think Biden is in trouble and l for one think we must stop Trump getting elected. The debate was unbelievably depressing. Frightening times.
Love Wimbledon. Hope Sinner and Graff win .
Francesca, It really was the worst week in many ways. The UK has given me some hope with their election and the French getting together to prevent the right from taking control was also good!
The fact that Trump is even allowed to run, to have a platform and be a candidate makes me beyond angry after what he did. I blame the media also for normalizing the guy- aka his poll numbers, etc. Are they for real? He should be NO WHERE near the White House again after how he has behaved.
I love Sinner and Gauff too!
x
Dear Kim –
Please add my voice to those who appreciate your courage in speaking out and expressing your opinions. Not that I don’t love to hear about fashion, travel, and home comforts, but it is tough to tear my brain away from political issues at this time. I am very concerned about the current state of the country and the world. Those of us who are mothers are likely extra worried about the future, as we should be. We cannot stand by and allow a convicted felon and sex offender with his radical hate agenda to run our country and continue to revoke our rights. Have the less liberal readers actually read Project 2025? Here’s a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_2025.
I would like to know what more I can do to stop this madness beyond voting and encouraging others to vote. I am wearing my 2017 Women’s March t-shirt, but just writing to you is giving me goosebumps of dread.
Thank you for all you do. I very much look forward to your postings each week.
Hi Julia! It’s been rough hasn’t it?
I agree as a women and mothers we need to be extra fired up. Thank you for sharing the Project 2025, which is scary as hell and need to be on every space pplastered so people can see what the plan is.
I still have my March shirt too. We need another!
I would think what helps the most is speaking out, giving money, phone banking, letter writing… I plan to do more of it all in the next few months.
Thank you for being here! xo
I love reading about my favorite place to visit , the Kona coast. I am getting the ice towels for my family , who play lots of tennis when we are in Hawaii, and get so hot. It will be a fun surprise. 🙂 And I am getting the BloqUV wrap for myself, really does look perfect to cover shoulders from the sun.
Thank you for speaking up! I think many are aware of what is going on, but there are many who’s head is in the sand. I always wonder about social media influencers who only post rosy things, do they not see what is happening? I think project 2025 will affect even those (women) in ways they do not even anticipate.
Elizabeth isn’t the Kona coast magical? Those towels are so good and you will LOVE the BloqUV shawl! So good for summer.
Thank you! I do think social media influencers won’t say anything for fear of losing followers. I will take that risk.
It’s hard to pretend like everything is always perfect when life as we have come to know it is changing here in America. Our freedoms are going away, and we may wake up one day and it will be too late like you say. If we could all used our platforms, what a huge impact that would be!
Dear Kim: thank you for expressing your views on our current politics. I agree with you 100%. I also agree with your other readers that On Tyranny is a very sobering read. My cousin kept extra copies at his house so he could hand them out to friends and family. I am in complete dismay about our Supreme Court, the dismantling of groups that support equal rights and the far-right leanings in Europe.
On a lighter note, I’ve loved hearing about your stay on Big Island. I really want to go back and visit–we’ve been visiting Maui for quite a while and it’s wonderful too, but I do miss Big Island. Thanks for all your tips on cooling and SPF–we’ve had triple digits up here in Petaluma. Stay cool and keep the faith, baby!
Thanks so much Sally! I just ordered On Tyranny ! Looks like Europe is getting wise to the far-right and they are getting shut down. Let’s hope we can do the same.
I love the Big Island so much. Hope you get to go soon.
Take care and stay cool in Petaluma. it’s just terribly hot! x
Hi Kim,
Aww, beautiful Hawaii! Sounds like you had a wonderful time. How fun to talk with Ed; loved him as Bundy. I will look forward to your post on Trinidad. It’s one of our fave towns to visit. I’m sure Max has been to the Beachcomber Cafe. Love going there for lunch and I usually by a bottle of their Larrupin Sauce to bring home. As you know, Kim, I always appreciate and applaud your views on your blog. Everyone needs to be more than concerned about the democracy of this country. It’s clear to me which candidate is for democracy, and which one wants to aggressively take away our rights. I’m off now to listen to Ukelele Disney on Spotify!
Hi Karen, Ed was a crack-up and a real down to earth guy! So cool you now about Trinidad. it’s really a special spot. I adore Beachcomber Cafe too. Can’t wait to go there and the gallery where I find the best pottery! Of course Larrupin is on my list!
Thanks Karen and enjoy chilling out to the Ukulele!
Hi Kim!
I, too, love your blog. I think it is very well rounded with home, travel and fashion. I especially appreciate that you speak out about the state of world around us. I’m glad your comments today were so well received. On a lighter note–I live in your area and hope I run into you in downtown Los Gatos one of these days!
Donna thank you for that! I hope so too.. Please say hi if you see me. Maybe we need to do coffee?!
Hi Kim,
I read your blog every week and am chiming in to say that I greatly appreciate your comments on our politics, recommendations for reads to stay informed and encouraging women to speak up. I am frankly terrified of the direction we seem to be heading in our country, and have given up hope of our Supreme Court doing the right thing for our country. But women can vote to fight for our rights. I cannot understand the argument that states should be in charge of reproductive rights instead of the federal government. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Women should be in charge of their OWN reproductive rights always. I have a niece in Arkansas and I can tell you she is devastated with the direction her state has gone post Roe v. Wade being reversed. I have friends in Arizona and family in Texas that are appalled. This is not how our country should be working. Leaving it up to the states means that the conservative states will take away rights from women, minorities, LBGTQIA. I think people who say they don’t like to read politics on lifestyle blogs are really saying they don’t like to be reminded of their blantant bias of people not like them. Sorry for the rant. It just makes me very upset. I also love reading about your travels, fashion and home. Your blog is refreshing and real. Keep it coming.
Hi Kim — First of all, thank you for sharing my Homeworthy tour! What a surprise! You are wonderful! Sounds like you had a relaxing getaway to Hawaii. I have never been! It is quite the trek from Maine… Just ordered the floral J Crew dress. It doesn’t really get hot here, but I can wear it with a jeans jacket or white shirt. I love the blue floral pattern, of course! Good for you for speaking up about the state of our country right now. I got push back one time for just mentioning that I enjoyed Michelle Obama’s second book –which was all about empowering young women, appreciating others, and valuing yourself. What a state we are in… Enjoying Wimbledon as I write! Have a wonderful week!
KIm, support again to you for speaking up on what’s at stake for
our political situation. Don’t stop, more women need to understand
what’s at stake for them and if they want a future where men
are deciding our choices and dictating it. I could go on a rant
but will say this instead. Our choices are being taken away and decided
by someone who doesn’t even know me or my circumstances. Choice
is all inclusive, when and how I want children, my health care options
if I miscarry and you sentence me to die instead of getting medical help,
choice of how and if I worship, choice of who I can love, choice of basic freedoms
for all and not strip our learning institutions of our history and differences,
hoping to erase the reality. You may not agree, that’s your choice but not
yours to chose for me.
Loved the pictures of Hawaii, haven’t been in a long time so nice to relive it!
Keep up the wonderful blog. Its 114 today in Arizona, the pool is like
bath water.🥵
Y
Agree 100%!
I suggested ON TYRANNY and I also want to suggest HOW DEMOCRACIES DIE by Levitsky and Ziblatt, an amazing audible version also.
I’ve listened/read it 4 times now, really nails what is happening now and how we can work on fixing it!
Oh, and I’ll keep an eye out for you in LG and environs, too! Maybe a margarita!
Thanks for the recommendations, Valletta. These books are available at my library and I will be picking them up! We cannot remain silent at this important time in history.
Kim, as you know, I too am a frequent traveller to the Big Island and I love the photos and trip report. I always go to the Saturday Waimea Farmer’s market for the produce, the crafts and the whole vibe however I spend most of my time with my head under water. The Big Island has much of the best snorkeling in the islands.
Mostly I am writing in support of your sharing your political views. It is brave of you, as you may well lose subscribers who think differently. That said, the stakes are high and we must show up, speak out and vote. Our democracy and our children’s future depend upon it. Thank you and much aloha.
Hi Kim, You’ve managed to cover a favorite subject of mine, Hawaii, with the brutal truth of what is happening politically. Thank you for bravely stating your views on so many important topics. We are in a scary time. I just borrowed the book On Tyranny to read after it was mentioned. The blog is obviously yours to write what you chose so don’t be intimidated by people who don’t like the views you express.
Hi Kim,
Here’s another person supporting your right to sharing your opinion, to stating the FACTS, and for having a clear and level headed approach when you do share your thoughts. Which I agree with 100% BTW. I just heard on NPR that in one state ( I don’t remember which) the librarians, as a way to protect themselves from the Orwellian laws being passed regarding book bans etc, are having parents sign permission slips in order for their children to use the library. With different options of access. Can you imagine?? The library is the one place I always felt free and safe and totally myself. And now the ultra conservative #$@%&* are trying to take away that right from the public, too.I’m appalled and frightened for the future, for my daughters, and for the nation in general. Then there are the world issues and it’s all too much to absorb sometimes. But I’m trying not to bury my head in the sand.
Hawaii looks magical, as always. You and Max stay at some lovely places. I’m glad that you got to go and relax and enjoy the soft air there! I was listening to “Hawaiian” music on Spotify the other day, to get into an island mood! It’s not the same somehow, but will have to do for now!
Remember I mentioned those towels last time we met for lunch? I’m glad you have a couple to keep you cool now, I can’t imagine playing tennis in this hot weather. That is one thing I always hated about the sport, being in full sun for the duration of the game. Ugh. I just can’t! But I really appreciated the cute tennis dresses and skirts when I played! Haha.
Glad you’re back and hope to see you soon. It’s a little cooler over here today by the coast.
Xo Heidi
Hi Kim,
It was so peaceful and tranquil for me to see the pics and traveled along with you on the Main Island. We stayed most of the very little free time we had in Kawaii because that is where we purchased our two week time share back in 1980 something. We have been to Maui only once I think, and never been to the big island. We love the whole laid back vibe of Hawaii. It’s simply a magical environment, the flowers and nature the ocean was the best place at the time to decompress and get reacquainted with one another. The shopping you did was fun. You must had been all smiles when your son loved the clothes you brought home for him. When you find a fabulous fabric it becomes the only piece of clothing you want to live in.
I have never heard of Trinidad it looks like heaven on earth. Max was fortunate to grow up surrounded by nature and so much beauty. Have a wonderful time away as a family. Sharing with the guys his roots are so important. These memories will stick with them forever. Life is about the experience. That stays in our hearts forever and ever.
Kim, as you know I throughly enjoy your content of your blog. You add so much to my life and I know it does not magically just happen. You put your heart and soul into everything you say and it shows. I always found sometimes taking pictures (I take lots too) can take away from the moment. You seem to juggle it so well.
YOU are the best. I truly feel my life has been enormously ENRICHED because you are an authentic person and in this day of lies and the horrid state of affairs our country is in. YOU are refreshing.
YOU bring hope to me that not everyone can’t see the forest for the trees and your head is not disconnected from your body tells me that sanity still exists in everything we are facing in our country that honesty and FIGHTING for the right choice and saving our democracy will win.
I read all about Project 2025 this week and it scared the hell out of me. In many ways it was no surprise. The hidden agenda and deceit seems to be the norm of these terrifying people. They want you to feel you have no control and instill fear based thinking. To just think that a women’s rights are taken away from the control of her own body and can put her life at stake is criminal. To think that “tfg” who is a convicted
34 Felon is allowed to have his name on the ballot and has given even the right to have a platform on TV is so wrong. Policies need to be seriously looked at, and change needs to happen.
YOU are right on in everything you shared and responses back to some that see things so differently. We all have a voice and it should be heard.
Thank you for being such a solid, confident woman of strength. You continue to add to my life. Thank you for being my authentic friend.
Hopefully you can escape and enjoy your love and passion for tennis and I know from your past shares you find your happy place in Wimbledon. I bet knowing you, your the fashionista on your tennis court. Maybe someday you can get one of your gal pals to take some pics of you in action.
Sending you some smiles and hope for the weekend. I’ve got your back all the way.
Hi!
Love your posts!! Quick question….is the Serena and Lily blue dining room rug you have comfortable on the feet? Is it comfy enough to have in a family room?!!
Thanks!
Laura it is a bit more of a jute feeling sort of rug. It’s durable, and great for the dining space, but if you are looking for soft, you are better off with an all wool one I think!
Kim, I too appreciate your continuing to speak out. I was awake from 4:00 a.m. on ruminating about these things, as I am many mornings. I fear for the country my daughter, son-in-law and dear grandchildren may be facing. The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 is so odious even Trump is now trying to distance himself from it, but it’s hard to deny his imprint upon it, when it was orchestrated by his former personnel and allies with the intent to codify Trumpism in its ugliest forms.
Kevin Roberts, the president of the Heritage Foundation, recently stated that we are in “the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.” Mark Robinson, the current Republican nominee for governor of NC, is on video stating to a church audience regarding their opponents (“wicked people” and those standing against “conservatives”), “Some folks need killing! It’s time for somebody to say it.”
Do they talk about this stuff on conservative news networks? Do people like these exemplify the morals and values of Americans?
Hello Kim,
Thank you for speaking out on current events. Silence at this time is dangerous. I reread ON TYRANNY by Timothy Snyder and found his twenty lessons more poignant than my first reading. Lesson 19: Be a Patriot. The last sentence reminds us, “A patriot says that it could happen here, but that we will stop it.” And so keep up the good fight. I am marching beside you sister.
xoxo – Holly
Very hopeful Holly, thank you!
I, too, am an optimist.
Hi Holly, Thank you. I agree. Just downloaded the book. I know we have to stay strong right? Let’s not be quiet about what is happening! xo
The beach at Max’s home town looks like heaven on earth. From some comments I read on random instagram posts I think there are many women in the US who agree with women’s rights being stripped away. How?? It’s the dark ages. I hope for all your sakes the situations change.
Rita, It is such a darling town!
It’s difficult to believe all women are not fired up and marching in the streets over our rights to our own medical choices about our bodies being removed.
We truly have gone back to a darker age and when they promise they are coming for contraception and also infertility treatments, I do believe them. They made this happen and they want more.
Thank you Rita!x
So many interesting topics in this post. I enjoyed reading about your Hawaii trip and the photos were fun. Ed O’Neill–serendipity. I also was very interested in the California beaches not as well known. I think I would like to see them. As for what’s happening in our country, I am on the same page as you. Thank you for your thoughts.
Linda, Thanks so much.. You would love our up north beaches! They are so lovely. I’ll share more when I go. I know kinda fun about Ed.
Thanks for your support! x
I found time to watch the Homeworthy video of Molly in Maine. Delightful! Thank you for sharing. She is so impressive.
Isn’t she? Adore her!
Hi Kim, On the topic of the BloqUV Wrap, it is a pink color or lavender as the Amazon link says? In your picture, it looks more pink and that is my color preference for color coordinating. It looks like it would be great for sun protection on my next trip. So sad how the U is handling the office closures. I am glad my daughter is not attending there anymore. Thank you for your work. I enjoy the inspiration. And thank you for speaking out on the politics side of things. We are not talking about all of these issues enough together for fear of offending each other. I wish if we don’t agree on these topics, we could lead with curiosity and kindness for each other instead of vitriol and spite. Ugh, a challenge for us all including me and my own family. It is astonishing what is going on in our country and how we can just seem to tolerate it all like it is no big deal. It took guts to call all of this out and I appreciate you doing so.
Hi mine is pink, but it looks like they may be out of it. The lavender is a different shade. I searched the internet and they are out of the pink anyplace they sell it.
Isn’t it sad about the U? I just cannot believe it and I am very angry with the college and have let them know.
I have the same issues as you with my family. Some of them have been sucked in by Fox news and other things and are basically brainwashed. It’s awful and scary. It’s hard for me to understand my family members being okay with some of these horrible people and the laws they have and plan to pass! We just have to speak out more. We are way too passive about all that is happening.
Thanks so much for your comment too!
Kim,
Your blog is one of my top reads! I appreciate that you include important reflections about the state of politics. We are in a frightening time right now. The recent Supreme Court decisions combined with the Biden situation are absolutely terrifying. I will vote for whoever the Democrats put on the ticket. Anyone is better that the fascist and felonious Trump.
Kudos to you for not shying away from unpleasant reality!
Hi Kim, my apologies for being late to get here. Quite honestly I’m overwhelmed by a lot of things and feeling very depressed. The heat, life in general and the horror show that continues to develop around us related to the upcoming election and Supreme Court decisions that make a mockery of the Republican party’s outrage (during the reign of a more progressive court) over ‘legislating from the bench.’ Hypocrisy is the least of the evils facing us and it’s a very dark and scary time. Thank you for speaking out, you always express yourself beautifully and I hope that we have a massive election turnout in November. The more voters who turn out the more likely we’ll defeat the tyrannical manic and his cult who’s menacing our country. On a happier note, its look like you had a lovely getaway. We stayed at the Four Seasons for my 50th birthday … seems like so long ago … and loved it. I can’t believe you’ve become BFF’s with Ed O’Neil. Modern Family is one of my favorite shows and his character is the best. It’s awesome to know he’s every bit as cool as he appears. I think I’m going to order those towels … sure could have used them this past week and I’ll be better prepared when the next heatwave comes our way. Hopefully not anytime soon. I’m going to go back up the article about Trinidad area beaches. I’m not at all familiar and it seems like a fun area to explore. Hope you have a great week! xo
I love it when you share your thoughts – ALL of them – politics too! Sometimes I feel like I am the only person who is so angry at and fearful of the Republican agenda. Speaking of gaslighting: this week the media has focused on Biden and whether or not he is “fit” for office, (seriously like every half hour it has been mentioned on any news program I listen to) while completely ignoring the new evidence that a judge released on the Epstein case. Trump is all over Epstein’s phone log, asking him to book massages with underage girls. Please wake up, republicans, and educate yourselves on this horrible person. Is this truly the best republicans can do??
Jenny, I know and it’s been making me so angry. It seems the everyone is bullying Biden to step down and yet ignoring the fact the other candidate is so heinous and a threat to all of us and Democracy… Why aren’t those allegations on the front page of every paper???
As women we can’t take our right to vote for granted. Vote like it’s your last chance before it is.
Representative Glenn Grothman (R-WI) said yesterday that if Trump wins reelection, the U.S. should work its way back to 1960, before “the angry feminist movement…took the purpose out of the man’s life.”
I guess the anti vaxxers who were screaming “bodily autonomy!” believe women don’t have that same right? Being old isn’t against the law but defrauding business associates, falsifying business records, misuing campaign funds, fomenting an insurrection and sexually assaulting someone is. If Trump was running against a sack of potatoes, I’d still vote for the potatoes.
Barb, It boggles the mind. They do not want to be told to have a vaccine, but are okay with women in red states having theirs taken away and decided by politicians, not the women and her dr? What the what?
Yes I do not see how the man has appeal to anyone after what he did in office, not to mention all the other..
Hello Kim, I am now a BIG fan of yours. I don’t like to read too deeply into these comments because it usually is so superficial, about the rugs, things, bags, etc. You have thrown yourself into the deep end, which I applaud. We took women’s rights for granted for so long, not knowing that it would be taken away. States rights vs Federal rights? The supreme court is no longer about Justice. The scales of Justice is broken and will never be rebalanced for a very long time. We are heading toward the Hand Maid’s Tale. Church and State. Gaslighting. This is Facism. I write to Congress, Senate, and to the President, often. They need to hear it directly from their constituents. Voting all the way down the ballot, down to State and City Council, Judges, Attorneys General, School Boards. Thank you Kim for speaking about your convictions. You are brave to do it and my hero! The haters will hate. But we all need to be rowing in the same direction, the majority of us, if we want to preserve our republic and democracy for our children and grandchildren.
Tara, Thank you for this! Really means so much. I feel the same and it’s such a scary time, I really don’t know how we all aren’t marching in the streets. I feel like each week, more frightening things happen. Thank you for what you are doing too. I know a lot of us are working behind the scenes, writing letters, texting people and donating. Let’s think positive and stay strong.
We have to believe Americans can defeat this man and his horrific party. No one wants to be living Project 2025!
