On this post, some fresh ideas for changing up things in 2025, Amazon alternatives, Sezane pieces, and more ways on how to help Los Angeles.
Well 2025 isn’t starting so great. Monday I am taking a Michelle Monday (thank you Mrs Obama), as some people have been calling it, and staying off the internet. Instead of normalising the man who tried to overthrow our government, I plan on doing a walk in one of the neighborhoods of San Francisco and lunch. I encourage you to be kind to yourself that day, and do self care and happy things with good people and stay off tv and the webs.
Monday is MLK Day of service and if you can attend a community event that day! Information about such events at Golden Gate Park and others in SF that that you can help with here. More cool MLK events in SF here and I also found this great Points of Light website, that connects you with volunteer opportunities near you all year long.
Work Locally, think globally.
Someone said that in comments last week, and it has been top of mind since. We can rage and share, about the state of things, but we can instead make changes beginning in out own neighborhoods and towns. Let’s get out and be with others who are like minded. Get involved in your local town, whether in the council, or volunteering, or maybe something like a local chapter of your political party. Start a group of friends who meet monthly to have coffee, or take walks, or create, or discuss ideas?
Being with others and off of our phones is going to sustain us through this next year. Knowing we are working toward more community and doing good, will help us not feel so helpless.
Every time I take a walk, read a chapter, work in my garden, grab a coffee at a local spot, I come away feeling so much better than I would looking at my social media.
Gathering is the new social media…
I was lucky to attend another meeting of the woman’s group the Gigi’s that I mentioned in November. It was begun last year by Shana, a retired teacher who wanted to bring together women who are not ready to feel unseen, as happens with many women after midlife. It’s a misconception for us to think we are at a stage of our lives where we are shrinking in our influence. In fact many of us are just beginning to find our voices, and we now have time and motivation. Our wisdom and confidence is at our peak. This is a great time to find a group or purpose to propel us through the next decades.
Big news at our meeting was that Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, the biggest volunteer org in America, has joined Shana to brainstorm a national version of our group, so stay tuned. We heard from Shannon, and had an open discussion about what sort of community we want to create. It seems like consensus was a combination of learning (talks), volunteering, and socializing. Wouldn’t it be great if every town had such a group? In our small gathering there are women that range from the 40s and up and from all parts of the Bay Area. We enjoyed a journaling exercise and a sound bath experience. I only knew a few people, but met so many new ones.

Shannon, by the way, has an exciting new book coming in April and I have pre-ordered it. It’s about women and what inspires us and using that excitement to change your life. I love Shannon’s description, especially the ‘shoulds.’ How many of us live every day guided by what we should be doing and not what we want?
Too many women are living on autopilot. We believe we’re too old, too busy, or too inexperienced to go after what we really want. But none of that is true. Our fire starts where all of our shoulds end. And in a world that wants women to make themselves smaller and smaller until they disappear, making a conscious choice to evade your obligations and embrace your desire is a radical act.
You can preorder her book, Fired Up here.
My Pottery Barn is closing 🙁

I wrote on my Instagram that our local Pottery Barn which has been in Valley Fair mall for more than 30 years, is closing in about a week. Everything was 60% off and I got these beautiful Larkin stoneware plates and this super soft camel throw, but I was sad. The employees told me there rent was doubled. The same happened to the Burlingame store a year ago.

Someone said that PB, a Bay Area original is hoping to buy their own stores, maybe to manage these ridiculous rents by the malls. I hope that is true. The mall is now owned by a multinational conglomerate who likely doesn’t care about this store, it’s local history, and all the great home items they sell. RH and Arhaus cannot replace what PB does. I have gone there for home goods, bedding, tabletop, curtains, candles, vases and decor for decades and I think the mall is short sighted. These big corporations don’t care, and these malls are just another asset they will leverage
One thing a reader commented on my Instagram post that is so true, is that for home accessories, you need to feel, touch and see the item. It’s often those items that appeal to us that we wish to add to our tables, and rooms. It’s the things that spark joy with their color or feel, and that is hard to discern from an online photo or website, don’t you agree?
That leads me to the oft discussed homogenization of home decor that is thanks to Instagram and the like. If we don’t get to brick and mortar stores, we rely on influencers to choose things for us. The result is everyone wants to look like the top influencers, like McGee and Amber Interiors, but that is also why homes are looking all very much alike.
The problem is algorithms. These apps figure accounts we like and start serving us only similar looks. That may seem convenient, and make it easy to find accounts that appeal to us, it prevents us from seeing new and different viewpoints. We end up seeing the same over and over- and in time our own homes, and outfits look like that too.
We need to train our eye with books, old magazines, independent stores, and differing looks from the world over. The library is a good source of design books. I love watching Homeworthy to see real homes, not just perfect ones. There’s a new book about this issue called Filterworld that just came out and I am putting it on my list. It’s not just interiors – or fashion, even our music is served up and curated for us. Listen to an album lately? We need to expand our minds more in 2025, and get away from curated environments.

Some of the other places to shop that aren’t Amazon. ( Thank you lovely readers)
I was so happy to hear more of you are feeling the same about not buying all we need in life from Jeff Bezos. So many great comments last week and I will continue to add more suggestions to the following week’s post and eventually make a huge list (I hope.) Please continue to share places you use instead in comments and I will keep sharing!
For those who can’t fathom dropping your reliance on Amazon, try starting small and move a few of your usual monthly purchases to a new place. Every small bit helps. You may be pleasantly surprised, like I was using Dermstore for my skincare. The delivery was fast and filled with nice samples. Let’s give other small companies and local businesses a chance.
For Book lovers..
Free library apps let you check out Kindle or audio books for free. You do not have to go into the library to get a card. The apps let you sign up with the library on line near to you. My friend Bari is a super reader and always has the next book on her list waiting for her on Libby and Hoopla is another to check out. You download them in the app store or here for Libby and here for Hoopla.
Bookshop.org links to local bookshops you choose (and 80% goes back to the bookstore.)
Indiebound.org links you to your local booksellers. ( Nothing beats browsing a real bookstore. You won’t discover things online like you will in a shop. )
Also check out your local used bookstore! Recycle Books in Campbell is full of stacks the latest top books besides loads of other classics and cool finds.
Chirp ( thank you Valeri) is a alternative to Audible. The app is free and easier to navigate than Audible. You can listen to books from $2 up and no subscription is needed!
Other Options
Target – Target has more home items and books than it does in store. I’ve been surprised at the brands and options that Target has online only. If you want to avoid the store, they can bring it to your car if you park in the lot. My nephew works at one and a huge amount of the customers are shopping this way. They just pop their trunks and he loads them up.
Hive is a great place for groceries, home staples, and personal care products that are healthy and sustainable. A great choice if you want to start making better choices for you and the earth in 2025.
Thrive is another place that focuses on healthy and organic groceries and cleaning products. They deliver and you can choose to be a member or not.
Chewy is the source for all pet needs and it delivers- which is so nice with heavy items.
Costco has so much online that is not in stores. Don’t forget to check them ! I have found some of my favorite sateen sheets there.
Uncommon Goods is a Certified B Corp and THE place to get gifts and things for the home. It focuses on small independent artisans and also uses sustainable packaging. They also give back to make a better world.
Grove Collaborative (thank you Susan) is a graet source for non-toxic cleaning and household products, vitamins, and personal care products. I also notice they highlight products that are not using plastic, which is great. You can subscribe or not, but save a fair amount and get free shipping if you have a few products delivered regularly and you can add other things randomly to that shipping package.
This weekend, I want to highlight one of my favorite retailers, CREDO Beauty.
You may recall my friend Jeanne and I discovered this wonderful shop in the Hayes Valley area of San Francisco (below). We loved that they offered clean beauty products, vetted to the highest standards. The shop was filled with gorgeous products that had to go through rigorous standards to be sold by them. They not only aspire to sell good things, but to also change industry standards. They are loud and vocal about it calling the industry ‘colossally under regulated.’

Their standards mean products sold are checked at every step, from manufacturing, to how people are treated, packaging, and how the product itself is sourced. They also joined to start a beauty container ( hard to recycle) program called PACT where you can earn Credo points by recycling. They also have a program they help called Lipstick Angels which provides makeup for patients going through cancer.
My favorites on their site are my Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara , Westman Atelier Face Contour Stick ( I love it for the eyes too), and this RMS Beauty SPF Radiance Serum with glow in medium. Check them out next time instead of Amazon and their storefronts in San Francisco are a joy too.

On My Radar…

One of my favorite California companies ClareV. has been busy helping with the fire recovery and I adore her shirt and hat that expresses love for LA and 100% of profits go to the American Red Cross.

I found this pedestal vase at Homegoods before the holidays and just brought it out and am loving it, along with this little vase from my pal Heidi. I cannot find my rattan one online, but Pottery Barn has something similar even cuter here with this plant in two sizes…

Are you familiar with the French brand Sezane? We have one coming soon to Santana Row. I took a chance and ordered this vest to transition to spring, and this necklace as I’ve been wanting more color in my wardrobe and I have nothing like it. I will report back!

Another home to be inspired by..
I know I share a lot of Homeworthy homes, but this Stockholm home by Cathy Nördstrom, is so lovely! It is very personal, bright and uplifting for a home in a part of the world that has a lot of dark this time of year. Many good ideas here for adding color to your home.
Helping LA
If you are like me and have been feeling like you want to do more for those affected by the fires in LA, there are still so many great places to give. I don’t even know how people are going to rebuild so many homes and beautiful neighborhoods. My heart breaks hearing every story. I have given to individual Go Fund Me stories all week.
LA based writer Elizabeth Holmes, who writes So Many Thoughts, asked her readers to share families who need help and she compiled a list of 20 families and their stories and links on how to help. I wish I could give to every one.
If you can give, these are groups vetted by local LA NBC Station that need more donations as of a few days ago..
California Community Foundation
L.A. Fire Department Foundation
Ventura County Community Foundation
American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles
Center for Disaster Philanthropy
If you missed last weekend’s post, it was what I did on my holiday break, loving Jimmy Carter, and Kravet x Pottery Barn collab, Amazon alternatives.
Take care and sending extra love to all the LA people,
Kim

I love watching Homeworthy. It’s a nice escape, especially now. I’m a bit older than you and have always purchased carefully and mindfully with the intention to keep my possessions for years. My home is filled with things I still love, but I’m always looking for ways to edit or freshen up what I have. That’s why I love watching Homeworthy! It doesn’t influence me. It inspires me to enjoy what I worked hard to have.
I feel the same way about fashion. I have such a nice collection of accessories (jewelry, scarves, shoes) that I purchased or were passed down to me that I can always find something to go with an outfit. I want to try to wear two statement 70s cocktail rings from my aunt more often. One is gold and topaz and the other is gold and garnet!
I think bringing back entertaining is another great way to connect with friends and share our homes.
I agree love it and so inspired by the real homes! I think homes with items you love for years and occasionally adding something fresh or changing it up, is the best way to have an authentic home that is you. It’s wonderful that you have a collection of accessories that you can pull from and change your look with! The cocktail rings sound wonderful!
I was actually going to write next week about bringing back entertaining. It’s what is missing also since the pandemic!
Thank you for giving alternatives to Amazon. And FYI, Bezos also owns Zappos, Shopbop and Whole Foods.
Shelby, Thank you for adding that. I should have mentioned those and will tackle those on next week’s post. Personally, giving up Whole Foods has been the hardest for me. I have had to go there once this year and it’s near my home and so convenient, but I have found alternatives and am shopping two smaller local stores. Sad about Zappos too.
Hi Kim,
I am lucky we have a small store that is so similar to Whole Foods, near where I live called Frazier Farms. I love I can buy my spices in bulk. They have fantastic meats and produce. I won’t miss Whole Foods at all because I have this store!
Martha
Martha I will check out Frazier Farms! I’m going to be down that way soon.. Thank you for that! I wish we had one.
We have a Frazier Farms too, I used to go to Sprouts every week but 75% of the time I now shop at FF because they have a better selection and Sprouts has gotten too expensive. I haven’t been to Whole Foods in a while, it’s a drive for me and now that Bezos owns it, not as appealing!
I use Good Eggs for groceries. They deliver and their produce is always very fresh. They are in SF Bay Area. I think they are also in New York. I like their procurement policies.
Dawn, Thank you! Have not heard of them! Will add that to the list. x
Kim, you are an angel. You have such a big heart, and I love (and relate to) your love of community. I look forward to your post every Saturday morning. Thank you. I always feel inspired after reading one of your posts.
Judy you are sweet. Thank you so much. I love this community and all of us chatting. You made my day.
Happy weekend!
Love your blog, I look forward to reading it each week! Would like to mention another source that you should check out, Grove Collaborative, a sustainable source for environmental friendly products such as cleaning supplies, organic soaps, vitamins, etc. their prices are great and they offer new products to try. I was surfing to find Mrs. meyers lavender window cleaner and found this company. I tried and LOVE their service and pricing. Please take a look! Enjoy your Monday in peace, hugs
Hi Susan. I have so many good things about Grove and will add it to my list above. Great to hear about the service and prices.
Really appreciate you adding this! Sending peace to you also! xo
I recently discovered Sezane. I purchased this sweater (link below) and love it! Their packaging is amazing. When I opened it, there was this beautiful scent which I loved. I found out they started offering it as a perfume, because so many people commented on it. So of course I had to get it. They also included a nice canvas tote, which was a lovely surprise. I will definitely be ordering from them again.
https://www.sezane.com/us/product/lyna-jumper/ecru#size-XXS
Betsy, I discovered them in Aix in Provence years ago and so excited they are coming this way. I am glad to hear it was good experience and intrigued to try this scent! I love your sweater and I wishit wasn’t sold out. Hopefully they will bring it back. It’s so pretty. x
I’ll be taking a Michelle Monday as well (love calling it that!). I’ve got several library books waiting on me, so I’m sure I’ll be happily distracted. Regarding brick & mortar stores closing, I’m so surprised to see that happening in your area since it’s so large! I’m in a city in a very small & rural state, and we’ve lost so many real stores since the Pandemic, but some before that too. As much as I appreciate shopping virtually from my couch, I do miss being able to go to a real store to see, touch, try on etc. I also like the option of being able to make returns or exchanges in person & truthfully, I usually end up buying something in -store when that happens! Anyway, not so easy to do that anymore. Have a good week & let’s all be gentle with ourselves as we prepare for what’s coming. We will need to rest when we need to & remember that we must find ways to resist without burning ourselves out. Not saying it will be easy but we can do this…
Yay Michele for taking a Michelle day! What a great day to catch up on reading or going to the library. I am with you adore the experience of a nice shop and seeing what strikes me. I think retail is changing all over sadly and it’s a combination of online shopping reliance and also how they are shaping the malls to fit a new demographic and it likely not 50 somethings like me, but younger people who want to spend on a lot designer items perhaps.
You are so right that we need to rest up for what is coming. Let’s stick together and we can come through this stronger. xo
Great article! Another alternative to Audible, and Amazon app, is Chirp. I love it. Thousands of Audible books from $2 on up to full price. The app is free and easier to navigate than Audible.
Valeri you are awesome! Have not heard of this and will add above! x
Hi Kim: I’m just thrilled that you’re encouraging whoever you can reach to shop locally and to gather in groups for sharing and discussion of….whatever. I love the idea of staying off the internet more and will certainly not be watching anything on Monday. Just an aside about skin products: I have problem skin and I’m finding that a ‘new’ brand, Prequel, ( developed by a dermatologist) is working well for me. I order it directly. I’m trying to buy less and to think two or three times before I buy.
I find your blog so uplifting–so intermittent and curated internet/social media is what I’m sticking to for right now.
Sally, Thank you! I am trying! Thank you for mentioning Prequel. I will check it out. I like you am finding if I leave something and go back to it, I often don’t need to buy it. Aw thanks and I think you are smart to limit what you read and watch in this new year! xo
Another shopping alternative is your local Ace Hardware. We have two local stores in my area and one of them even has a huge kitchen shop. They have a lot of great cleaning supplies too.
Sue great suggestion, as they are locally owned! I agree we love our Ace here for kitchen things too and the one in Truckee in Tahoe is incredible.
Hi Kim, The news that Pottery Barn in VF is closing is very sad. Like you, I can look around my home and see so many things I’ve collected over the years from the store. I know it helps my SLO store if I buy there rather than on-line so I try to do that as much as possible. When my daughter was in college, she worked at the one at a mall in Sonoma and got nice discounts for herself and her mom! I have ordered from Sezanne in France as well as visited their store when there. I find their things to be nice quality.
Thank you for all of the other things you covered. I will be ordering a baseball cap to help LA which is where my son and his family live. Blessedly, they were spared.
HI Wren! I know I have many things from them- a pewter tableside clock, a shell frame in my bath, pillow covers, that have lasted so long! How nice your daughter worked there. I’m glad you like the Sezane quality. I adore that baseball cap! I am so glad to hear your some and his family are okay.
Oh my goodness, before I realized it was a meme I was unaware of- “Michelle Monday”- gave me a very good chuckle. I will be doing that too. I have seen so much talk from the right about folks wimping out by not socializing with or supporting Trump or Trumpers and for me that is a big eye roll. Please don’t school me on what it means to be “united” and also don’t talk about virtue signalling or whatever stupid term they have devised when that is exactly what you are doing when you attack virtue signallers by telling folks what to value or how to act !!! Okay- the homogenization of everything is a big thing to me- I see it with decor, fashion and even more telling and of grave importance- beliefs! My goodness, we really need to pop off the internet and start living by gut more. I tried it much more often last year and felt more satisfied with my personal life and value system and less importantly, but still of note- my home decor and fashion choices! I don’t have awesome ideas for online shopping. I do love Ebay and “Bullseye Deals” (Target Overstock) on Ebay. We also have some local online estate auction sites which I think grew in popularity during the pandemic. But if I’m honest with a bigger family, young kids and inflation- we buy more and more essentials at retailers like Sam’s and Walmart. I know how everyone else feels about them… but I have seen improvements in quality and selection. Secondary to that- we’ll pop into a TJmaxx, Home Goods, Marshalls or even Ross for a gift or kitchen item. Still though- we prefer quality over quantity and look elsewhere for certain items. Keep your hope high and yes- socializing is key and we all need to get back to it if we want America to succeed. Be well and take good care in the weeks to come. I am trying to remain patient, calm and curious about what is to come. ❤️
Nicole, I am with you and find all that united stuff to be hypocritical after their guy never went to the Biden inaugural, nor invited he or MRs B to the white house.. I’m not even mentioning the hate and vitriol coming from his mouth nor Jan 6th. To that I say DO Better. They have another chance and so far, I’m not seeing the ‘come together’ message from the top at ALL.
I LOVE your comment here living by the gut more. Exactly this! Let’s wing it with our homes, wardrobes, and so much else.
EBay is also such a good source – and did not know about the bullseye deals. All good ideas!
Socializing will help us get through. Patience and calm will help won’t it?
Have a good weekend. xx
I did remember a few great online resources for books- Thriftbooks, Abe Books and Better World Books! They sell through Amazon, but you can buy from them directly. I firstly visit a used/new bookstore in town and I do often tack a book onto a grocery order via Target esp. around the holidays for the kids when they have so many promos, but we have reduced our spending at Target. I feel like at some point they raised their prices and reduced the quality of their merchandise and also fell into the trap of appealing to algorithms so the store never feels fresh and you can very obviously see who they are targeting with each line they carry. Anyway… I saw someone else mention hardware stores- yes- a good resource for house plants and creative decor. Harbor freight sells a lineman bag that we use instead of plastic buckets for stuff around here because plastic breaks down in the sun so easily where we live. Anyway- 2 additional cents and have a great week!
Nicole you are awesome. Thank you so much for these. You are the best! Great ideas. x
Thank you for highlighting some great Amazon alternatives. We always buy our pet supplies from Chewy. When our cat passed, I had to return some of her expensive prescription food. They credited me, told me to donate the food and then sent flowers. Unbelievable! I am a customer for life. Also huge Sézane fan. Have a few sweaters I love and recently ordered one of their bags on Vestaire (NWT) at a significant discount. Extremely happy with that purchase!
WOw no kidding! That is amazing kindness and service from a big company. I would absolutely use them. I am so sorry about your cat Laura. Glad to hear about Sezane and smart idea looking at pre-loved pieces of thiers.
Another fabulous post Kim!
Lots to think about here…and meeting up locally with a group of women sounds excellent.
I am a new member in a a women’s knitting group…we all do Yoga together and there is a retreat once a year! It is so wonderful just being in the same room chatting and knitting and exchanging patterns and ideas.
I would add second hand and thrift shops to your list of places to shop for things …we have a great assortment of local shops whose profits help support local charities.
Cheers!
Leslie
Hostess of the Humble Bungalow
HI Leslie. Thank you so much. Wow what a cool group you have! I can imagine the chat and community from it is so good for you all as well.
Thank you I will try and do a special highlighting second hand and pre-loved. I think I did last year, but it needs repeating that this is where you are going to find the quality items of the world- and I love those that help support good causes.
Happy weekend!
Hi Kim,
Michelle has her head screwed on in the right direction. Monday is a hard day for me. I’m glad I will be with one of my very best friends on Monday through Tuesday afternoon. Focusing on my card crafts will help.
“Fired Up” looks like a good read. It’s so important that women try to stay positive and upbeat especially as you advance in age and have health issues that they deal with.
I understand all to well about landlords or corporations that own shopping centers and strip centers why retailers are forced to close their retail stores. Often what happens rents can get raised double. As it was retailers can hardly show profit margins as it was. This has been going on for over 25 years, it just keeps getting worse. Sorry to hear that your Pottery Barn is forced to close. Good luck that the owners of the center will be able to fill that space. Retail is one of the most difficult businesses to successfully survive along with restaurants and flower shops.
Your pedestal vases look great in your home.
Katherine, She seems to be the only one who is thinking straight. WHY normalize this man? I truly wish every President and First Lady would blow this off. It would send a message that he and what he did are NEVER OKAY!
I am even upset with the networks acting like this is a normal inauguration.
I’m so happy to hear you will be doing something fun and uplifting with a good friend.
I knew you would have some thoughts on the retail having been in that industry. It is the truth that the small ones struggle to make a profit, and we have to visit them as much as we can. I know it’s always been a struggle and online has made it worse.
Hope you have a peaceful weekend!
xo
Kim,
I read an article, this one to be exact, https://www.alexmurrell.co.uk/articles/the-age-of-average about why everything looks the same.
The world over looks exactly the same. For years the algorithm has rewarded “influencers” for posting the SAME THING! The same kitchen, the same sorts of outfits. All which seemed so strange to me. Why do we all want to be the same?
People like me who “collect” love books and moody dark colors as well as quirky things I have collected since I was a child do not fit in the social media mold and that’s ok! I am not going to change.
I have always been and always will be drawn to preloved things, books, and things that tell a story. That said, I love to look at pottery barn, williams Sonoma and places like that for tabletop pieces and inspiration and I love to go into the stores. Sadly we live at least 1 hour from stores like that(probably good for my wallet). That is why I rely on you and Juliet to share your finds and then I head to the website!
How wonderful for you to have found such a group! It sounds great. I think go blogging like that, like minded people getting together virtually to share opinions, and things like that. As they say, Like people attract like people. We don’t all have to agree on everything but we can agree to share and listen to ideas and points of view.
One person can change the world my friend, even if it is only their world.
WOMEN are strong and they have the power to do a lot. But truth be told I have met in life and online many unkind and nasty women that although they preach about strong women banning together they are not willing to help other women. It is strange because we all bring to the table different ideas, styles and intelligence as well as life experiences, we can all be “successful” by helping one another.
That is just one of the many reasons that I am so happy that you and Juliet said YES to weekend meanderings! We have never met in person but we are together each week sharing our life and views and meeting so many interesting women along the way!
Have a wonderful weekend Kim! xoxox
Please leave political opinions out of a blog. I’m not a Trump fan, but I also don’t give a rip about MICHELLE. I read blogs for entertainment and info, not political opinions.
HI Lu, This is my blog, and I am a Michelle Obama fan. If my blog, which is my work and labor, is not to your taste, feel free to find another. I adore the former First Lady and all she has done while in office and now.
Maybe you can find a blog that loves MELANIA! I think they still sell her, ‘I really don’t care’ jacket still in case you need a reminder of what kind of person she is. I also hear her $200 glamour shots book is needing more buyers. FYI.
I love you,Kim! Your blog is my favorite. Monday is reserved for a nature walk, contemplation of MLK and a quiet dinner with friends. I’m all about Michelle Monday.
And thank you for your writing. Politics matter.
Deby, You are sweet. Thank you.
Your Monday sounds wonderful. I love every part of that!
With all due respect, Lu … have you ever heard the old adage, if you don’t have anything nice to say, keep your mouth shut? Kim’s blog is essentially her home on the web. Would you walk into her home – or any other friend’s home – and tell what they can or cannot discuss. I doubt it. But if you do, I doubt you are a welcome guest. Your comment is extremely rude and ill mannered. Here’s the thing, and it’s very simple, if you don’t like what you see move along.
Love ya Juliet! x
Wow, rude much. Take a breath. I had just read Elizabeth’s comment re women being rude online a and IRL, scroll down and here you are.
Rita xo
You must be a new reader because Kim has been very vocal about her political beliefs for a long time. There are plenty of other blogs out there.
Thank you again Kim for such a pleasurable and informative read. So much good stuff in one post.. I so appreciate the time you put in to create and share relevant, thought provoking and inspiring topics!
I’m definitely doing a Michelle Monday.. we have a choice where we direct our energies and time in life. The next 4 years I will be mindful of this.
Wishing you a restorative long weekend! X
Happy New Year Kim,
What a great post. Fortunately it’s easy for me to take a Michelle Monday, I’m in Brittany where we don’t have a TV, and the radio is intermittent. I’ll be thinking of you all on Monday though when I walk along the beach.
This year is the 250th Anniversary of Jane Austen, I’m re-reading her books, they’re incredibly inspiring even at this time distance. I’ve just started Sense and Sensibility (for about the tenth time!)
And I love the rattan vases! Sad to hear about Pottery Barn, it’s such a treat for us when we visit the US, I hope some branches remain.
Take care
Jude xxx
Hi Jude! Beautiful Brittany without television sounds wonderful.Enjoy your beach walks. I did not know that this is the 250th Anniversary of Jane Austen! I think that is a great reason to reread her books and watch the films. My first Jane book was Persuasion. I read it when I was in my 20s and it is still one of my favorites! I love the BBC Pride and Prejudice so much too. I know fingers crossed for PB! xo
Why would one participate in Michelle Monday or avoid shopping on Amazon/Whole Foods? This type of behavior displays the same vindictiveness of Trump. But if it makes you feel better – go for it!
Sylvia, it’s called trying to find peace during trying times, and voting with your wallet. And, yes, it does make me feel better too. Thanks for your permission!
Dear Sylvia, Maybe we don’t want to see an assaulter and hater of women who tried to overthrow our nation, and an all around NASTY human take the highest office in our land? I can imagine a day instead, being with nature and being good to ourselves would be healing.
BUT if it makes you feel good supporting that man – and Jeff Bezos, who needs more $ for his ego and his monopoly on all we buy- GO FOR IT!
I have also started looking for sources that are alternates to Amazon. This need took hold near the end of last year, and with the exception of only two items, I have found alternate sources. My first priority is to shop locally, so I can support my independent merchants. If I have to shop at a larger store, we have a Target in town, so I know local people are benefiting from my purchases, as Target is one of our larger employers.
I have many concerns about Amazon, but one of them is that when they become the only place to buy some merchandise, Bezos can decide what he wants to carry, and it may not be what we want.
Lois That is great news that you were able to do this! I agree shopping locally is the best thing we can do, before going online. I love that you consider even your local Target because as you say, they are employing local folks.
You are totally right that the more we depend solely on Amazon, the more he can choose what we get- and when. When he crushes the competition, we will no longer have those options. We hurt ourselves by removing our other options.
Hi Kim,
I’m new to your blog as of a few weeks, and your current and last blogs blew me away–largely because I’m in COMPLETE agreement with everything you’re saying about algorithms turning us into clones, the disgrace (and grief) of corporate monoliths causing fabulous stores like Pottery Barn to close, disgust with the networks for normalizing everything about Trump (and news outlets rushing to kiss his you-know-what), the wisdom of Michelle Obama, the grace of Jimmy Carter, the enormous potential of thinking globally but acting locally, etc., etc. But I’m also appreciative of all the non-Amazon sources, both online and in Northern California, that you’re sharing. I washed my hands of supporting Jeff Bezos’ attempt to monopolize the world some time ago.
I’m probably 15 or 20 years older than you are, but you are speaking to the choir here! You go, Girl…you’ve got guts in saying it like you feel and not mincing words. This is, after all, YOUR blog, and you should be free to speak your mind. Those who don’t like it can find other sources, as you’ve told them point blank.
Thanks!
Hi Carolyn, Aw I’m so glad you found me and the blog. Ugh I feel the same about the news outlets… and sad they are normalizing it all.
Good for getting off Amazon. I wish I had done it earlier!
I so appreciate the support here and so nice to hear so many feel the same.
Thank you SO much for this!
Hi Kim, thank you always for these very informative posts, even if I’m outside the US. It inspires me to search out similar shops in my country. Your tablescapes are always beautiful and calm (if that makes sense) that’s the feeling I have looking at it.
In my experience houses Often aren’t trend. They break decorating rules and don’t follow trends . They are comfortable and imperfect. I just finished a creative academy course with Rita Konig who is a fabulous decorator- she says you always want something to be a little “off” in a room-it’s what gives the room soul. I so agree with the algorithms on Instagram leading right to the same thing time after time. I just have to believe in my own taste and go in my own direction when it comes to decorating it makes me sad that stores are closing down. I love to go in and take a look at things even if I can’t afford them. I love to hold them and take a look so that when I see something at HomeGoods or when I’m traveling, I know if it’s a good deal if it’s something I’m going to want.. thanks for your blog!
Hi Kim,
Love reading your work thank you! We are back home now after being evacuated due to the LA fires and we very nearly lost our house so it’s such a giant relief and a gift to be home. I won’t be watching Monday:l think the man is repulsive and l am not giving up my previous time. Equally l am not going to waste energy on his policies: l disagree with all of his thinking, and my heart goes out to those true professionals in foreign policy, education, defense,to name a few, whose work will suffer due to his presidency. I worry about my son in the AF having such a leader.
Love your thinking Kim and love that necklace !! Take care xo
Francesca, I am so glad you all are okay. I am so sorry and can’t imagine the stress..
I think of your son and all who are serving. The appointment of Pete H yesterday was another blow to our forces. Keeping you guys in my thoughts..xo
I plan to watch the tv all day Monday, this is an historic and entertaining event. I really enjoy your blog but don’t agree with your politics and wish you could refrain from imposing your thoughts about the new administration on others. And, I don’t plan to stop shopping at Amazon!
Jill, I don’t plan on refraining about anything I think matters.
So FYI.
You may keep on enriching Bezos. It’s a free country.
Happy weekend, Kim. As usual you express yourself so beautifully on so many topics. I’ve been on a new/social media break for the entire year (all 18 days of it) and will be sitting out Monday as well. Quite honestly, I’m in fear of what the day and following days will bring but I know living in fear is unhealthy and unproductive. Your women’s group sounds wonderful, and if I lived nearby I’d be there. I was surprised to hear about your PB closing. Your SoBay shopping centers always feel more vibrant than ours and our PB is going strong. At least I think it is, but we’ve been plagued by ridiculous retail rent increases and favorite stores closing too. We have one spot downtown that raised the rent on a wonderful local brand store to the point the owner could not afford it only to see the space sit empty for going on six months now. I remember when RH was a cute sort of upscale hardware/home goods store in Marin County. It certainly has evolve in an odd way. That said, I have pieces from them that I love but the overall feel of their stores – and ridiculous huge annual catalogues – is sterile and boring. I love color which can still be found at Pottery Barn. I want to read Filterworld, it’s ironic how the expansion of our reach through social media has narrowed our vision. I much prefer a hardcover book or magazine for inspiration and even though I was a fan of Pinterest, I find that once I’ve pinned something I rarely go back to reference it again. It’s disconcerting how much our world has changed – it feels very dramatic and rapid – and I feel more than a little lost and untethered. On a happier note, I do love Sezand and it’s exciting that you’ll have a local store. I hope we get one too. Of course, I read something recently that resonated with me … I don’t lack things to wear, I lack places to wear them! But, that is NOT your issue, my friend … you out there moving and shaking and looking fabulous while you’re at it. Have the best weekend! xo
Super post, Kim. Inspirational, informative & helpful. We can get through these next 4 years with a little help from our friends. Enjoy your unplugged Monday, I will too!!
My most recent effort to avoid Amazon is with my floss. I’ve recently discovered Cocofloss, and I order from them directly now, rather than thru Amazon. Cocofloss has several different products, but my husband and I have been using the floss for several months now. The floss itself is made from recycled plastic, and what I really like is that you can just order refill rolls and insert them into the package, rather than purchasing a new floss container every time.
I see CVS carries it too!
Lisa I am crazy about that floss. I will buy it direct! I don’t think any other one compares. Love the refills.
Thank you so much.
Hi, Kim —
Another great post, and great comments from your readers! Plus I loved your response to the woman who didn’t want to hear about politics, and read it out loud to my husband. ♥️
Your women’s group sounds amazing! I would love to have something like that in my area and look forward to hearing more about it. I had book club at my house this week with a few neighborhood women. It felt so good just to have an evening of socializing and sharing our thoughts!
Love that the CLIMATE is causing the orange guy to reduce his inauguration celebration! I intend to avoid the news on Monday, and perhaps for four years thereafter! My sister has been on a news fast since the election. However, Rachel Maddow will have a nightly broadcast on MSNBC for the first 100 days, which will at least be honest reporting…
Yesterday, a Peoples’ March was to be held downtown, so I dug out my pussy hat from 8 years ago and Dean and I headed that way. Unfortunately they announced it was a rally v. a march. It was unorganized and there didn’t seem much point to “preaching to the choir”, v. spreading the word by marching through downtown Portland. I am planning to participate in a march on Monday with Don’t Shoot PDX, a group started by a woman who lost her nephew to random gun violence.
Recently I needed to reorder a Maelove face serum, and instead of using Amazon I found that it was cheaper on the company website, even including shipping! That felt great. Reminding Dean not to use Amazon for every little thing is a bigger project (haha), but I am working on it/him. Every little bit helps!
Keep up the great work!
xo
Aw thanks so much Julia! I still get people each week telling me what I should be doing on my own blog…?!
I love book groups. SO good now for us. Yes wasn’t that just the earth getting back at him? But no it’s all a hoax..Wow great you guys participated in thee march/ rally. We had one too and I didn’t even know it. After you said that I dug deep and got my pink pussy hat out too. I’ve been wearing it and feeling I am resisting in my own small way! Thanks for the reminder. Also so cool you found that on the website! We should all try that. xoxo
Kim, thank you so much for all the information and effort you’ve put into your blog and this great post with all these wonderful subsection. I’ve read your blog for quite a few years now, and while I am older by quite a few years than you, I truly appreciate your insight and opinions. I will take a Michelle Day as well tomorrow, thanks for the heads up on that concept. I knew she wasn’t attending, but I hadn’t heard the idea of all of us joining her offline!! I’m totally on board with finding ways to escape from the Amazon world and have been working on that for a while, mostly just by going directly to the website of whoever makes the product I want to buy and purchasing directly from them, if possible. Even better, if I can find the product in a local store, that’s my first choice for a purchase. I still love to have a real book in my hands when I read, so I purchase a lot of books, either from our local used bookstore or I go online to my local bookstore and order from them directly. They call and let me know it’s ready and I pick it up on my next visit to town, or if really necessary, it can be mailed to me. Pottery Barn is one of my faves and I would be so sad if we lost the one in nearby Marin County. I love all the suggestions here, and thank you again for sharing your wisdom.
Gail, I am glad you took a Michelle day too. I was on a hike and after at lunch a whole table of women were talking about Michelle and doing the same, so it seems she inspired many to tune out and not give attention to that circus. I just added your suggestion of buying from the vendor on next week’s post! Great idea.
Thank you Gail and take care! xo
What a great post Kim! No way would I watch Trump’s inauguration and will take a break from the television tomorrow and if I do go on the internet is to check on my eBay sales or watch a home tour or two. I woke up early this morning, probably thinking about how much things will change in this administration. My husband the optimist, reminded me this morning we can only worry about things that are in our control. However that begins with small things we can do such as not buying on Amazon. I have never been a huge Amazon shopper. Sometimes I may only buy every 6-8 weeks. Some of my neighbors have Amazon show up almost every day. Right before we moved back in the house after our remodel I purchased some items I needed but also bought quite a bit at The Container Store. I hope they stay in business. I found that Target has the same book prices as Amazon and sometimes other discounts on top of that. They also pack books better than anyone else, I have seen reviews on Amazon where people have complained their books arrived damaged. If I do buy at Barnes and Noble, I prefer to do it in person for the same reason.
How sad about your Pottery Barn closing. Landlords are getting so greedy! It seems to a common theme sadly. We need to do what we can to keep some of these brick and mortar stores going.
It’s been so heartbreaking watching all of the LA fire coverage. I know someone who lost her home in the Palisades. She and her husband were getting ready to board a cruise when her daughter called her. They decided to go anyway since they had no place to stay at home. I can’t even imagine. At least her daughter found their safe and an intact Le Creuset pan. I made a donation to World Central Kitchen and happy to see so many people stepping up to help. Except our president elect is threatening to withhold aid? Critizing our firefighters? My husband says as did yours recently, it’s just noise to distract from something else. I think personally he is just hard wired to be an ass and wants all the publicity whether it’s positive or negative.
On that note, I hope you have a nice weekend. Bracing for more Santa Ana winds this week. Hopefully not as bad as the last ones.
Linda
I forgot to mention I shop at Vitacost quite a bit for supplements and some groceries, they have better prices on some food items and offer discounts quite often. They do have a minimum of $49 for free shipping though.
Linda, I agree with you hubs about what we can do. And by the way, Amazon books I have ordered always arrived damaged.
I am so very sorry for your friend who lost her home. So terrible. Wow those Le Cruesets! I also gave to WCK! They are amazing and have helped so much.
I agree about Trump… He just wants to cause misery it seems. Take care Linda and be safe with the winds..
Thank you so much!! Awesome post!
