Paris When it Sizzles, a Summer Movie, and More…

August 2, 2025 By kimwheeler 74 Comments

On this post, part one of my Paris trip, how to stay cool while traveling in extreme heat, a pretty Paris apartment, and finally a real summer film to go see in theaters.

It’s our weekend meander with Juliet and Elizabeth! I’ve missed you all. I hope July was good. August is warming up here. We spent all of July being very lucky with 70 degree temps. I knew it wouldn’t last, but it sure was nice. My tomatoes are a bit behind, but my cantaloupe are doing great and I have at least 7 little melons on the way! The babies are so cute too.

I wanted to share a little of my Paris trip today. Fortunately our close friends Mosby and Erin were staying in Paris for a month while on a work sabbatical, so we got to meet up with them, and do a lot together.

It has been almost 19 years since I had been in Paris, and I’m mad I waited so long to go again! It was better than I remembered. Last time I had small boys with me too, which may have been a factor in my enjoyment!

Paris when it sizzles

The first days here were HOT – as in 98-100 degrees. There is a reason seasoned travelers don’t go to Europe in the summer- crowds and the heat with minimal AC. We had plans for Wimbledon though, and it was a perfect time to meet up with friends and do five days in Paris before. Funny I guess I’ve been lucky as most of my Europe trips have never been THAT hot. In fact most of the summer Europe travel has been cold, and even rainy. This was a big change. Add in I am now older woman who gets hot all the time, and it was a struggle the first few days with jet lag, but I rallied.

My friend Erin took this photo while we were walking to dinner.

Where we stayed…

We were lucky to stay at a lovely place in St Germaine that my friend April recommended, Relais Christine, which had excellent air conditioning. That is saying a lot as most French AC is weak at best and sometimes advertised, but undetectable!

During the hottest part of the day, we would go back to our room and sort of lay there like steaks in a meat locker. Truly! We spent the afternoons in the beautiful hotel lobby, playing cards and making a cold drink at the honor bar. The hotel always had big glass bottles of the best cold French waters to help yourself and bring back to your room by the front desk- much appreciated during the heat wave. The people could not be nicer. We loved the kind and friendly service. They were patient with our French too.

We adored the neighborhood! Our hotel was located on a teeny medieval street that led to the prettiest green filled private courtyard. We had a bottom floor room with a patio table, but it was really too hot to use most of the time. I can imagine in fall and spring it would be lovely. If I went back, I would ask for a room overlooking the courtyard as ours was a little dark with just the door window, but still very pretty, with all you need in a small space.

I would recommend Relais Christine for the easy central location. We just walked out of the courtyard to get to multiple cute neighborhoods in minutes. We also took the Metro the entire time which was just a quick five minute walk.

The hotel has a pretty breakfast space with an incredible spread. If you don’t want to eat there, many bakeries are less than a five minute walk. Right across the entrance is the Christine Cinema Club a favorite with locals, with a hip and busy small crowd all the time. So many evenings people were congregating in our little street chatting with drinks. Looked fun and if we stayed longer, we would have gone one night.

Dealing with the heat

I quickly learned to dress as light as possible and carry a paper fan I had luckily packed that was a godsend. I wore my lightest dresses and even shorts and a sleeveless blouse one day because I just needed to be cool. Many Parisians did the same.

At the airport there was a kiosk with large Evian sprays for 3 Euros. I grabbed one and bought more later at a pharmacy. These helped hugely. Every morning I would bring a light tote bag along with my small purse and carry the fan, the spray, and a bottle of water. The night before I would fill a water bottle and add an electrolyte tab and pop in the mini frig for the next day. These help with the heat and the jet lag.

I also bought a souvenir umbrella at Saint Chapelle for the sun. Just walking across the Seine just about did me in a few times. The Paris heat was oppressive and unlike any I have experienced in California. Maybe it was the humidity too. There is no shade and no breeze and the umbrella was a relief.

Museums are a sanctuary if you are in a European city because they have the best air conditioning to preserve the art. We spent the hottest day- almost 101, at the Petit Palais, a short walk from a Metro stop in the 8th (more below), which was so cool! Department stores also have AC, but nothing like the museums.

Day 1 – Get outside and walk your neighborhood

We arrived on a Sunday, which isn’t a bad day to land in Paris. Many things are closed, but people are having Sunday lunches and it’s a nice time to walk your neighborhood and get some sun and exercise, which helps so much with jet-lag. (I also avoid alcohol for a day or two.)

We were just a few blocks off the Seine, and the Latin Quarter so we changed and hit the streets. We grabbed a bite and then walked down on the lower part along the river where there was some shade. Many people were enjoying Sunday on their boats or taking a trip down the Seine.

We met our friends for a dinner at a local spot. We did come across a pretty passageway- Coeur de Commerce de Saint André. This street has been there since the early 1700’s and has original cobbles. It was one of the last small streets from before the Haussmann widening of Paris. There are many cute cafes and the most famous is Le Procope, which Benjamin Franklin, Voltaire and others dined at. It has been called the first cafe ever.

I bought a Guide to Paris from Heather who writes the Habitually Chic blog. It was helpful, along with the Paris addition of the YOLO guide I subscribe to.

That said, I realize I am not someone who searches out Michelin Star places- or even the hottest reservation. I truly prefer to see what we stumble upon. Paris has so many cafes and restaurants, Max kept saying ‘How to they all stay open and find the employees?’ I don’t know, but I love it and we came across so many great places just wandering around. I think one shouldn’t get too hung up on recommendations. Your job as a traveler is to get out there and see what you haven’t and try new things!

Cooking class- French macarons

The next day we were up and out very early for a macaron baking class Max had signed us up for with our friends. (I was a little irritated, but was a good idea to get going early on Paris time.)

Patisserie a la Carte is a great little baking school in the Montmartre area, just a quick walk off a Metro stop. The classes are in English and small. You can also do croissants, tarts, and other things. Our class was with four others from a French company (doing a team building) that were so nice. By the end of the class, we were all chatting and we did a macaron exchange with them, so we could take home all the flavors.

Our teacher was a professional patisserie chef and so good. She had tips and tricks for making your macaron perfect. We were there 2-3 hours and did the macarons from start to finish. Max and I did the rose flavor and it was the best, if I do say so myself. I would totally go back and do another class, and highly recommend it.

I did not know we were a super close walk to the Sacré-Coeur basilica. I’ve been once and it’s a must you can walk to from the class if you haven’t been!

Le Shopping…

As it was extremely hot, we jumped on the Metro back to our hotel to store the macarons in AC and had lunch at a great Italian spot on our street. After lunch we headed across the Seine to check out the newly remodeled La Samaritaine, Department Store – and get into the AC.

This historic store was closed for almost 15 years for renovations. It’s absolutely gorgeous inside. The main floor has one of the most fun French souvenir areas where I bought a few little things. The handbags area has some great small brands. It was SOLDES – or sale season and many things were 30, 40 or 50% off.

Erin was obsessed with a brand called Inoui Editions that makes scarves and bags in unique prints. We loved their totes and colorful prints. There were lots of gorgeous woven bags. There were the usual name brands, but I found one called Jerome Dreyfus and bought a cinched bag that I fell in love with. Fortunately it was also 40% off. Apparently this is a brand a lot of Parisians love.

This store is dedicated to unique and small brands and it was fun to bop around. The men even found some amazing chairs and Erin and I played in the La Double J department that has both beautiful housewares and clothes.

The jewelry area was fun and we tried on rings. I wish I had bought this one.

The top floor is stunning with a restaurant and a bar/lounge that is a great spot to relax between shopping – we all had a cold drink. I found this hibiscus tonic that seems to only exist in Paris, and is so good! The ceiling is all glass, and there are views of the city. The art and staircases are gorgeous in this store. This is a huge store which extends for a full city block and has other cafes. A must do.

Highlights- Petit Palais Museum and Saint Chapelle

The hottest day we saw the unbelievably beautiful Sainte-Chapelle early. It was stunning and beyond words beautiful. They are currently restoring some of it, but have used mirrors to hide it and you can hardly tell. The cathedral was built in the 1200’s and most of the stained glass is original. It was all removed during WWII to save it! It was recently restored again. I know I should have gotten to Notre Dame, but I was so glad we did this.

It was getting near 100 so we decided to take the Metro to the Petit Palais, which houses the City of Paris art collection. This museum is housed in another gorgeous building (and has great air conditioning.)

The museum is always free, but we paid to also see the Worth Exhibit.

Worth was an Englishman who they call the father of haute couture. The exhibit showcases his evolution of making clothes for the world’s fashionable women from the 1850’s to the 1920’s. There are 400 pieces in the collection and it’s so good. It runs until September, so see it if you are in Paris this summer!

The art collection in the Palais is excellent. In fact it may be one of my most favorite museums now. They have a great mix of sculpture and art. Don’t miss the lower floor which has the Belle Epoque era and there are incredible paintings.

Across the street is the Grand Palais. It is used as an exhibition space and is also free. We stopped over there, but as it was so hot -and the roof is all glass, we did not stay!

The Eiffel Tower

That night we went to see the Eiffel Tower light up. It was touristy, but it was hot, so why not be out and about? I had no idea that Paris stays so light, so late. We were walking around in pure daylight at nearly 10 p.m. People start setting up at the tower around then, but they don’t light the sparkly tower parts until almost 11:00 at the end of June! It was worth waiting for.

Next time I’ll share more of Paris and some thoughts on French women beauty and fashion- and the summer looks I saw there. I will tell you all about London and Wimbledon – oh and what I bought!

I hope to move all this travel stuff to a Substack where it will be easy to locate.

A great summer film !

Finally a woman centered film, directed and starring Kristin Scott Thomas. My Mother’s Wedding has echos of her early film Four Weddings and a Funeral. You also have to go to a theatre- which is fantastic. I just hope I can find one near me!

Other Good Things…

Have you seen the Homeworthy tour of a Paris apartment by an American florist? It’s utterly charming and so is she. I watch this and dream of having such a place.

Juliet shared her vacation outfits and there are a lot of pretty things and Elizabeth made a delicious dark chocolate caramelized almond bark!

This week in Democracy

It’s been a summer hasn’t it? I just realized it was a year ago we were coming back from our family vacation in Humboldt and we heard the news that Harris would run as President. I still remember bring so hopeful. This woman had so much to offer and such a great plans. I STILL have my Harris sign on my front yard and I have no plans to remove it. Luckily it’s become one with the decomposed granite, so it’s pretty permanent now.

I cannot list all the bad that has happened under this administration. Just three things that I will mention this week.

I did make a video on my Loud Daughters Instagram account about Trump’s gold airplane that he is gifting to himself and taking with him, at a cost of nearly a billion of taxpayer’s money. He never got permission, and just announced it’s coming with him. Meanwhile, will we sit like chumps paying the 938 million estimated bill that is using our rescinded funds that once went to American programs like Medicaid, SNAP, National Parks, and so much else -so he can fly off in a gold jet? Then there is the 200 million gold ballroom for the White House. All the while we are just beginning to see the results of Medicaid cuts. We closed 5 Planned Parenthoods this week in Northern Cal, that served the needy in so many ways. The Center for Pubic Broadcasting will fold too. What in the Gilded Age is this BS?

This week Trump’s EPA repealed the EPA’s finding that climate change affects the planet and our health. This proclamation kept us safe by regulating greenhouse gases and emissions. This allows polluters and large corporations to pollute with no penalties. This endangers our health, our children, our planet in so many aspects, it’s hard to fathom.

Lastly maybe most importantly, the Gaza crisis has become so bad. It’s time Americans admit our complicity in this starvation. We have given Israel aid with no strings amounting to more than 10 million dollars of US Taxpayer dollars a day.The world is sitting by and letting this happen. So many who have starved to death are babies.

Is there something that you are doing to stay sane – or maybe feel like you are making a difference? I’m not sure I am even helping with this news anymore, but I also don’t want to bury my head. That said, we can only take so much. Take care of yourselves and try and find joy in the small things this summer.

On the last blog I shared how to pack a carry-on for an overseas trip, a few good things on my radar for travel, Pamela Anderson in UK Bazaar, and more!

Wishing you a super weekend and thanks for being here!

Love this blog! I went to Paris in June with my daughter and 2 young granddaughters. I agree – it was extremely hot and lacks air conditioning. We loved eating at the outdoor sitting area at all the lovely restaurants. One thing the little girls loved was the mist machines that lightly spray over diners to cool them off. We saw all the usual touristy things – Eiffel Tower, went to mass in Notre Dame cathedral, boat cruises on the Seine, you name it. Of course we shopped! Having young children with us made us see many things through their eyes. My oldest granddaughter teared up when we stood in the front about 25 feet from the Mona Lisa. We did not use the Metro but instead arranged for limo service to some highlights and to the airport. We have wonderful memories.

Hi Lyn! Thank you so much. I do love all the outdoor cafes too! We didn’t get lucky to find misters.
How great you got to mass at Notre Dame. That is on my list! I bet having the young girls with you was a fun way to see Paris. Aw this is something they will always treasure. How wonderful you could do it together. Thank you for sharing! x

Kim, welcome home! It is so nice to be back together meandering.
Paris is always fabulous but in the summer the crowds and the heat do get to you. For 8 years of the over 40 years I have been going to Paris, I went in summer for 4-6 weeks, at a time. Lucky for me I stayed with friends who had the most amazing apartment across from Invalides. They are the parents of my friend and French teacher and they wanted me to see the Paris that the tourists didn’t see so they would make little lists of adventures, walks and museums, etc for me to see. I have so many happy memories of my time with Claude and Marguerite, and the things I learned from them and the adventures that we had.

I could not agree with you more, do not rely on the lists other people make, those are the “highlights” there is so much more to Paris than the Louvre, Notre Dame, La Tour Eiffel, not that they are not amazing!
Throw away your guide book, put on your walking shoes and walk, peak your head in a church, small courtyard, museum, etc. Stop at the little boutiques, local markets, Bouquinistes along the Seine, go swim in the piscine, enjoy an aperitif on your local cafe, etc. And get on the train and leave Paris for the day, visit Geverny, Chantilly, Versailles, there are so many amazing and beautiful places a train away from the crowds!
On a side note, one of the best times to go to Paris in my opinion is late Fall, early December.
Sorry for the “rant.” I think your trip looked wonderful, Sainte Chapel is stunning and Samaratine is breathtaking. I shopped there many times before they closed. Looking forward to going back on my next trip. I cannot wait to see your bag and to see what other souvenirs your brought home. What was your favorite place that you ate, did you have any eclair?
The Worth exhibit looks AMAZING! Tell me more!
Now that you have taken a macaron class will we be seeing more of these delectable treats coming from your kitchen? Speaking of, your canelope are so cute! How do you keep the animals from eating them?
That Homeworthy home tour is so beautiful, she is the owner of Floret. I love the story of how they found the apartment.
HAve a wonderful weekend Kim, stay cool! It is HOT here too and truth be told I am whiny and so over it. LOL.
    xo

Elizabeth, I had no idea you are such a Paris pro. Maybe you need to lead a tour group? I would sign up! How wonderful you got to go so many times. I would love to stay there for an extended time. I had a lot of treats- and giant macarons! My favorite dinner was at a brasserie! Everything was so good.
Stay cool too. Great to be back with you ladies. xo

Welcome back, Kim! I have missed you. 🙂 How did it get to be August? Yesterday, I belatedly started a summer to do list: (1) attend an outdoor concert! (2) grab some deli sandwiches and have a picnic at a park we haven’t visited before! (3) well.. I’m just getting started! Have been doing well at reading outside in the shade of the backyard with a glass of iced tea mid-afternoon, if not too hot.
It is you-know-who’s goal to overwhelm us to the point of complacency, and I am not willing to be silent! Today is the Rage Against the Regime national day of action, organized by 50101. Hubs and I will be heading to downtown Portland to march and chant and wave our signs. By continuing to show up, continuing to boycott, at least it feels like we’re doing something. I have also started volunteering one day at week at a local food pantry, assembling free food boxes for neighbors in need. My representatives are like-minded. If you know of more things we can be doing, I trust you will let us know!

I missed the Rage day! I don’t know how. I look forward to seeing people in action. We need more of this. I follow 50101 too.
You and your husband are awesome! Thank you for getting out there. Also helping the food pantry. What a good way right now to feel like you are making a difference.
I’m hoping we have more of these protests and will share. xo

Awesome Paris trip. I was there in 1923 and never have enough of Paris. Will keep your hotel in mind for my next visit…The Petite Palais is a great museum.
Never been there in the heat but once in February and so cold.
I so enjoy Homeworthy on utube and saw Sandra’s Paris apt…what a beautiful place— so tasteful and a dream apt.
Yes our political situation is unbearable and so depressing—something must be done—how does he continue to get away with such outrageous acts? It’s unbelievable!

I know what would be better weather? Maybe fall and spring?
      Wasn’t her Paris apartment dreamy?

Loved your photos and tips for Paris stay! Beautifully written.
Was quite disappointed, however, in your political observations. No party is perfect because no people are perfect. There is a real conflict of vision in our country as to what is the best way to move forward in a positive direction. It is obvious that hatred for a man has clouded all logical objective thinking.

    • kimwheeler says

      August 2, 2025 at 9:05 am

Judy thank you. I am sorry my views disturb you.

      This is what I believe…

Our moms and dads and sick friends and kids deserve healthcare before a billion dollar jet and 200 million dollar gold ballroom.

People who have lived here and toiled to make our country better don’t deserve to put in concentration camps and tortured.

Cancer research and science should come before handing back Jan 6th insurrectionists families millions.

Poor women should be able to get contraception and healthcare before billionaires get enough back in their taxes to buy an extra yacht.

A innocent man does not need the Epstein list redacted before releasing it.

I believe empathy is a virtue and I see none of it in Trump or this administration.
Thank you for listening. x Kim

If you don’t agree I am sorry, but this is what I hold dear and I cannot abide what is happening.

Hi thanks for sharing your thoughts. I can’t believe that there are so many people that think Trump is doing good for our country. The one thing I have noticed is they don’t have any things to support their agenda. Why do they believe it’s ok to spend millions on gold rooms and airplanes?

          August 2, 2025 at 12:33 pm

Patricia same here. I haven’t heard a thing about what he’s doing for the average American, but I sure have heard a lot about what he’s doing for the billionaires and corporations. The oil, coal and gas industry along with the chemical and gun industry are really happy too. Says so much.

Kim, agree 100 percent. Please, let’s continue these discussions. It helps me to feel like at least we have some sort of a voice. I still continue to believe that the good people in this country will win, but it won’t be quick or easy.

Hi Lisa, and thank you for this note. I am always a believer that good will win out in the end. I agree with you right now things seem unclear and I feel like we have a struggle on our hands with so many complicit in this current administration and also business leaders and media supporting it too. How can we take back our nation and the humanity and goodness we once were so proud of?
Just hearing from you all here helps me know we have so many who care… xo

Judy, Trump is not moving the country in a positive direction at all. And he is the one who rules with hatred. As a matter of fact, recently he said that he hates Democrats. What kind of a president admits openly to hating a large portion of the country?
He has taken healthcare always from millions of people; taken food from hungry children; taken Medicaid away from elderly and disabled people, including children. Nursing homes will close due to this; rural hospitals will close; public radio has been taken from rural communities; he is giving millions so that large corporations such as CoreCivic can run American Concentration Camps; he has also given ICE free rein to snatch immigrants from the streets without due process, and without identification, and wearing masks; and he has added trillions to our national deficit. I could go on and on about the immorality of this man, including the fact that he is a convicted felon and looks to pardon an awful woman who attacked and abused children, but I’ll just stop here. So, yeah, I’d say there’s a “conflict of vision in our country,” and as far as I’m concerned, you’re on the wrong side of history.

Welcome back! I always enjoy your travel reports so I’m loving today’s post. I’ve been to Paris twice (the last time was 9 years ago!), once in March, so it was cold, and then at the end of July. We rented an apartment that had AC, which we were glad to have, but the weather during our trip was actually not bad at all. I feel for you & all others who were there during the heatwave! I live in AR, so it’s been awful here most of July—heat indexes on multiple days over 100 degrees, but this weekend we are getting a break & it’s only going to be in the 80’s! I’m on my deck right now, enjoying the reprieve.

As for the news & the orange monster, it’s absolutely terrible. I’m so disappointed & disgusted by all the people who are letting this happen (meaning the maga and republicans who are so power hungry that they no longer care about democracy). You’re so right that we have to try to find a balance between keeping up with what’s happening but also monitoring our own mental health. My escape is reading. Thank goodness for books.

Michelle, Totally agree! Books have been a sanctuary where the news and all that can’t get to me and I can escape. We need it now so much!
You are so right the weather can be cold too in summer! You never know. I bet March is a good time to go.
I feel for you all with this unrelenting heat this summer. Enjoy the lower temps!

I think you hit the nail on the head about power. They say that is what has driven JDVance and Rubio and others… Lost their souls to power and money to the demise of our nation and all of us. Hugs to you.

So excited to see your post this morning! Love love love Paris, haven’t been in many years. Saving your post and will start planning a trip for next year!
It certainly feels like the Epstein saga is exposing cracks in the MAGA coalition. And he is “technically” a lame duck so we need to keep pressure on our elected Reps and Senators, inundate them with calls, emails and SHOW UP to town halls! Thankfully we are in a sea of blue but our D reps need to pressure their R colleagues. When the Rs feel more pressure and fear from their constituents than they do from Trump then the fever will break. 🤞That’s why this next year and a half is so important.
After firing the BLS head and moving the nuclear subs near Russia, we are closing in on a dangerous time. He *will* pardon Ghislaine Maxwell if he feels she will throw him under the bus. And then we are in new territory. Be prepared. Do Not Obey in Advance.

Hi Valetta! Yay for planning a Paris trip !
I totally agree that the Dems need to work harder on their Republican colleagues. Someone else- maybe it was Heather Cox Richardson, says that the pressure from the voters will be the thing that gets the R congress to change. So far the town halls have been massive and a huge push back to this administration just 6 months in. Let’s keep the momentum going.
The pardoning of that woman could be his undoing- but then what his supporters have grown to ‘reframe’ in their minds knows no bounds, so who knows. Good points! Thank you so much. xo

    Hello Kim,
Welcome home! Beautiful Paris pictures and review of what you did thank you! Going to look into that hotel when l go next, it’s been a while. Saint Chapelle is my all time favorite that and the Musee Rodin and the Musee d’orsay. My brother used to teach at the Sorbonne and then bless his heart, would take us to his favorite places and restaurants’ so l always think of him rushing around pointing things out. Gorgeous city but l hear you about the heat and the jet lag!

Hi Francesca! Oh I think the hotel is so worth it. I can see why Sant Chapelle is a favorite. I need to get to the Musee Rodin. I was at the d’Orsey so long ago. I need to go back.
Wow how wonderful to have a brother who taught at the Sorbonne! That must have been great seeing Paris with him. I always dreamed of going to the Sorbonne for school when I was young.
Yes I am a big baby about jet lag and heat…still Loved it! x

Hi Kim, Nice to be able to read you on Saturday morning again! Your trip to Paris reinforces what I am already planning for the spring. I am going for pleasure but might also have to see if I can wrap up my sister’s estate. She lived in Paris for 30+ years and was married to a Frenchman who predeceased her by a couple of years. It’s tricky getting things done not only by me but also by my brother in law’s brother. Can you believe that I got to drive through the Eiffel tour in 2022?! Seeing your picture of the lawn, I started doubting that but I have a picture which shows it. Sorry it was so hot for you and I will be taking a chance in the spring also. Some years I have been there when all the tulips are blooming but some years, the plane trees haven’t even leafed out yet. Would love to be able to take only a carry-on but that would be a feat!

I forgot you used to be able to drive through! I guess it was like that the last time I went.
Spring seems to be the time to go right? So true that weather can be so hard to predict! Still you must go and enjoy. xo

Hi Kim! So happy to read Meanderings while I sip my cuppa this morning. Thank you for the lovely Paris pics and info. The last time I was in Paris was October of 2014. The weather was cool with some rainy days, but it was a beautiful time to visit. It’s hard to manage hot temps with little to no AC. I am escaping the vile news by reading, painting and watching good series on BritBox and PBS. I love Kristen Scott Thomas and I’m looking forward to viewing her new film. Xo Karen

Good for you for escaping – and painting! We have BritBox too and I swear it’s life affirming. There is nothing on that service that lets me down! Worth every penny.
I can’t wait to see this film too. xo

Kim! It’s so good to be back with you and Elizabeth on Saturday’s. I look forward to all the good things you’ll share that will keep me entertained for the day. The Paris portion of your trip … wow! Just gorgeous photos and amazing adventures. I’m so impressed how you persevered through that dreadful heatwave making the best of it and looking cool as a cucumber in your cute outfits. I wish I could jump on a plane and hop over there now and do every single thing you did. Looking forward to part two of your adventures. Especially the full scoop on Wimbledon! I’m beyond excited for the My Mother’s Wedding movie … and appreciate the heads up. KST is wonderful … and Four Weddings is probably my favorite movie of all time. That reminds me, have you seen the Pam Anderson Liam Neeson news … I love this for both of them. As for the state of our country and world, it’s to depressing – and shocking – to dwell on. That stupid plane, the vulgar redecoration of the Oval and now this gargantuan ballroom. Is the White House now Trump Hotel? And now Ghislaine Maxwell being moved to a Club Fed and perhaps on her way toward a pardon and redemption. WTF. I guess those issues pale in comparison to the real harm being done to the most vulnerable people of our country, and the world and I just hope the Democrats can get out of their own way and put up a fight and prevail in the mid-terms. Otherwise I’m afraid to think of what will happen … everyday I wake up and think, how can it get worse. But it does. Alright, well, that was a bummer … back to the good stuff. Your time in Paris, beautiful photos and wonderful recommendations for expanding our horizons through travel. xoxo

The weather, the colors etc. That said,I love how you made it work for you and you managed to look so chic regardless! Also jealous even though you were hot;) Now I want to go to your favorite museum! Never been! I am a little mad you didn’t buy that turquoise ring! Ha!
I can’t add on much as the others already haven’t , but I will say two things. 1) thanks for ALL of your tips, without ads! Extremely generous 2) thanks for your sense of humanity, spoken calmly, and intelligently .

    Hi Kim,
It’s so nice to have you back home. I throughly enjoyed everything you had to share about your holidays. I especially enjoyed all the pictures you took, I felt as though I was right there with you. The museums are outstanding. The heat must had worn you out, so smart to have a fan and carry water. Knowing you’re not crazy about the heat I think you were a real trouper. Especially dealing with it when you are older than you were 20 years ago. How wonderful your close friends were in Paris and you got to share fun times together.
Kim, I’m trying not to absorb all the horrid things that the 34 Felon Monster is doing. All of it disturbs my peace of mind. I’m with you on EVERYTHING you said. The Gaza situation is deeply upsetting to see. No food and seeing them passing due to starvation is heart wrenching. Our community Fry’s are asking us to donate to SNAP that is what we are doing. To take away all the services to people in need is hateful and downright mean. We just gave more $$$ support to our local PBS a few weeks ago. I hope they will not be forced to shut down. YAY, good for you keeping up your Harris sign. I listened to her interview and mentioned her new book out. I think it’s called 107 days. She is so good, it was a breath of fresh air to listen to a solid, together smart woman. A true professional. Do you want me to forward that to you? I was on the fence about it, so I decided not to. Maybe needing “time out” from everything. Let me know.
To keep my sanity in 115+ heat staying in with AC. The big thing I’m working on is cleaning out my clothes closet. I’m part way there, the hard part will be letting go of most of all my handbags.
I have all my overflow of more clothes yet to tackle in the casita. Many people will be thrilled to have my treasures, and that makes letting go of these things much easier for me. Even after doing a major clean out I still have too much. I now live in total “comfort and ease” in more ways than one.

    • kimwheeler says

      August 6, 2025 at 2:19 pm

Thanks so much Katherine. Was so fun, even though hot as hell. Next time hopefully in cooler months!
This is so good of you to help the community with SNAP and PBS. That said I am mad the individuals are now taking care of what the government should be…but is instead giving breaks to the ultra wealthy- and corporations.
I can’t wait to read the Harris book and yes I saw the interview too. It almost hurts more to hear from such a sold human with so much heart and intelligence, knowing what we could have had.

I’ve been worried about you in the heat!! Glad you can distract yourself with a good closet clean out. I’m about to do that more too. I hear you about the handbags and feel the same. They are extra special. Yes knowing that someone else is going to love them helps.
Big hugs to you and stay cool down there !! xo

Welcome home and merci for this wonderful post. I am quite a Francophile and go to Paris almost every year but never in the summer. I don’t do heat well but when it is unavoidable I soak a cotton scarf and wrap it around my neck. I rewet as necessary.
Your hotel is one of my favorites. Great location and very atmospheric. I am very jealous that you got to see that Worth exhibit. Such craftsmanship! I like your take on seeing Paris. Walk, explore and don’t overplan. I Lao took an excellent soufflé making class last fall which was a highlight of my trip. Next time, macarons!
Lastly, thank you for continuing to take a stand against the home grown gilded fascism we are living under. May kindness and equality prevail one day.

Hi Kim, this is Patricia near Ottawa in Canada (I noticed a couple of other Patricias in the comments!). So nice to have you back again, I really enjoyed this post. My eyes zeroed in right away on your new bag and I’m so glad that you linked it. Unfortunately it’s out of my budget, but I think it’s just gorgeous. Enjoy wearing it!
We haven’t been to Paris since 2010 – I think I remember seeing the Samaritaine building (by the Seine?) with scaffolding around it. It looks simply beautiful inside, I’d love to see it in person.
I am reading so many newsletters (The Bulwark, Status Kuo, Katie Couric and many more) and it just gets worse and worse. I simply don’t understand how anyone can observe what is going on in this administration and not immediately know just how corrupt and wrong it all is. Even at this distance it’s all very stressful – I hope that writing about your travels etc. helps you to unwind and stay on an even keel. I’m looking forward to your Substack!

Hi dear Patricia! How lucky am I to have so many Patricia friends? I see you all with your emails and know who is commenting, even though it’s not visible to the blog readers!

Oh gosh the bag was 500 Euros when I was there and then an additional 40% off so I went for it as I had a little savings for something nice. I see now it is full price- and more expensive. I wonder if that is a tariff addition now?

I am reading some of those great newsletters too. I will check out Status Kuo! Will get working on my Substack.

Thank you for caring up there in Canada. I hope you know most Americans are horrified about Trump’s words on Canadians and his 51st state garbage. I’m so sad it affects you all too with his insane tariffs that are off and on. I hope Canada continues to be a strong leader of so much that is good in the world. xo

Yes, have a read of Status Kuo – the writer Jay Kuo wrote or co-wrote the musical that is based on George Takai’s story of internment during the Second World War, and right now he has a new show on at the Edinburgh Festival. He is also a single dad to two very young kids (he is gay), and on Saturdays his newletter is all about the crazy memes and videos that have gone out during the week; many of them are very funny!

Kim, you gave me so much to check into this time from your recent stay in Paris… that wonderful store ✅, a return visit to Saint Chapelle , complete with lunch at the corner bistro across the street…solo this time✅, and the Relais Christine . Now I know that brand so was not overwhelmed by the cost. When I am in Paris again for a short stay, I looked into L’Abbaye St Germain suggested by Beeta of “Mon Petit Four” . Beautiful decor and has a small private garden patio as well. With € to CAD , it’s surprisingly affordable for 3 nights, when compared to the Red Carnation Montague on the Gardens in Bloomsbury that I usually visit. Prices have crept up in London, so Paris instead felt like a reasonable trade! I’ll just stay, after my overnight flight, in LHR terminal 5 once landing from western Canada , and go onward to Paris! I understand your timing , especially to include Wimbledon, but I truly suggest next time April in Paris …just like the song …or late September into October. Much better weather and fewer tourists. There’s the abundant spring gardens in April , and a crispness in the air in October. On my agenda while in Paris, is a few hours one- on -one cooking class with someone also well known to Beeta, who is an amazing cook herself. Very excited! And I am more inclined to to use my limited time on this special memory than shopping. Although, I may just find Samaritaine for a look around. I see that the gorgeous Worth exhibit will be over Sept 7 , unfortunately for me. Exquisite clothing.
Keep up your persistence against the continuous awfulness by the current administration. I just gag thinking about that man and his band of nitwits. Seems we 🇨🇦 are again in for a fight with ridiculously higher tariffs…based on what ! ? this time. There’s the theory here that when many more people in America start realizing the rising costs to themselves ( in so many ways) , surely common sense will begin to prevail. Mid terms are not so far off after all.

How fun meeting up with friends, and being open to just letting Paris unfold as you discover new spots to lunch, and sightsee. The hotel looked beautiful, too! I enjoyed the read very much, and as several other fans mentioned….greatly appreciate the ease of reading your well written blog without those annoying pop ups and ads that clutter some blogs. Your garden is growing well too, love the melons.

Reality check on what’s really going on around her Reality check on what’s really going on around here! I’m so excited I am finally getting a Crate & Barrel atmoire/chest I’ve been looking at for three years. 🤯

In order to make it all work, we had to move everything around like Jenga and hope it fits. I’m liking having this older chest in my office and the chairs back where Griffin’s couch was.
Some people have opinions, and hate any changes, but I’m ignoring them despite the meows!!!🐱
Have you ever been to a Firmdale Hotel? On the wee Have you ever been to a Firmdale Hotel? On the weekend blog, I’m sharing a gorgeous design book by the proprietress and designer, @kitkempdesignthread and her style.
She’s got her own dreamy hotels, rugs, wallpapers and more. Kit’s a genius of mixing color and pattern without fear, and adding in craft art pieces that give it all a wow factor.

A few pieces of hers, like pillows -plus things to add to your house with a similar look and feel are on the blog.
If you want some fresh inspiration, it’s all on this post.

Summerland is cutest little town off California’s Summerland is cutest little town off California’s Highway 101. So many people have never been, including myself until last week when we stopped and I fell in love!

The number one place here is the famous @godmothersbooks which had been on my list, and is a gathering spot for the community, besides two levels of the best collection of books and a cute courtyard cafe.

Next door is the @summerlandbeachcafe
and three incredible home stores- @porch_summerland, @thewellsummerland, and @botanik_summerland Botanik. There is much more, but we had to get back on the road. I need to get back there and explore more.

Pop over to the blog and read more about this hidden gem of a town, that’s deserves a stop on your next California adventure.

Thirty years ago today Max and I were married! Tim Thirty years ago today Max and I were married! Time has seemed to fly. It doesn’t seem so long ago my friends Ani and Chris told me I had to meet this guy Max. Our first date was Mrs Doubtfire! We talked until 3 am! We were pretty inseparable after that, though we were pretty opposite.
I learned to scuba dive and backpack for him -and he learned to love (okay abide) museums and Jane Austen films!
We had so much fun raising our boys. He is the best person I know and I feel so lucky.
Love you @trinidadmaxon
Did you know Venice’s Abbott Kinney Boulevard is a Did you know Venice’s Abbott Kinney Boulevard is an experimental spot for new retail and shops? We spent a few hours there last Saturday with our son Jackson who’s recently moved to LA. There’s so many fun concept stores and new brands to discover!
I bought a handbag for fall from an adorable brand @ciao__lucia and Jackson loved the shirts and pants @cookman.usa. We loved @ourplace with bright cookware and kitchen equipment.
More details about my bag -and the cool brands on the weekend blog.

I am grateful she was part of our lives. May her memory inspire more folks to be even half of who she was.

Maybe jewelry is our gateway to an updated fall lo Maybe jewelry is our gateway to an updated fall look? Today on the blog, Cindy and I are sharing the trends, styling ideas, and some of the coolest pieces we have found in the jewelry space- and yes some of these pieces have an 80’s feel.

Dig in the drawer, wear what you own, and mix it up. ✨Some ideas for that too on August’s Signature Style.

Today on the blog, I’m sharing the best summer sal Today on the blog, I’m sharing the best summer salad you will ever make. This is a longtime favorite from my friend Alex who is an incredible entertainer. She always makes everything California casual, and seemingly thrown together, but it tastes and looks fabulous! 😎

This salad uses the best of summer so make it soon!
The salad 🥗 is…
~Washed butter and a mix of greens (not bagged right now)
~Watermelon cubed
~Baby tomatoes halved
~3 ears of white corn (slice off uncooked and rinsed.)
~Red onion sliced
~Toasted pine nuts
~Feta cheese crumbled ( I substituted mozzarella here as my feta went bad.)
~Poppyseed dressing. Yes bottled. Sorry, but it is so good. I used Brianna’s as the original recipe calls for it.

Assemble and toss gently with the dressing. Top with pinenuts and blue corn chips crumbled are good too.

Alex’s salad is a great one to share at a gathering because it makes so much and can also be a terrific dinner with a protein added.

The full recipe on a card to save is on the blog, along with other delicious summer food ideas from five friends.
