On this post, my personal favorites from Madewell this fall, the best tart recipe, my garden, and seeing the Downton Abbey movie.
Welcome to the weekend meander where Juliet, Elizabeth and I share what’s new, cool, and on our radars.
I got to enjoy my birthday a little longer seeing friends this week. Those kind of celebrations are the best to me. versus a big party. My friend Jane took me to lunch and gave me these lovely flowers! Aren’t they the prettiest soft fall tones?

I also got a some great books and a marble tray from friends I will share next week!
Downton Abbey
Last weekend Jackson’s fiancé, Kristin planned a Downton Abbey birthday for me. She flew up here from San Diego just so we could all go see the final film and have a birthday dinner afterwards at Left Bank in Santana Row. She and her mom got the tickets a few weeks before. She wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to make it as she is doing medical rotations, but she managed to make the flight and we had the best time.
We spotted these darling ladies dressed for the film and having a ball. They loved the attention and talking about the film at Santana Row.

Kristin wore her What is a Weekend? Downton Abbey t-shirt with a tulle shirt and looked so cute. Kristin, her mom Annette, and I all love DA and were so excited to see this final film. All the guys went too -and we ended the evening at Left Bank with a great dinner and desserts! Everyone was so sweet to me. Really one of the most fun nights ever.

I finally have a girl in the family (or will soon!) Kristin and Jackson have been dating almost 10 years. I feel lucky to have her and her family in our lives!
Have you seen the film? We thought it was beautifully done. I cried all my makeup off -which didn’t look so great at dinner. It wasn’t because the film was sad, but it was touching and bittersweet.
The September issue of UK Bazaar, (my favorite fashion magazine), is fortunately available at our local Lunardi’s grocery. The leading Downton ladies -Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael, who say they are like sisters in real life, are featured in a lovely write up and fashion spread. It’s a good issue if you are a Downton fan or you can read it online here.

My Summer Garden
Someone asked if I would show more of my garden this summer. I shared the garden beds Max built back me in spring. They have made a big difference in how things have grown this year! It’s been my best season ever for tomatoes. I did not fertilize them, but we did fill the beds with fresh compost and dirt.
I also had luck and harvested eight sweet cantaloupes! That plant I bought on a lark at Ace Hardware back in later April.

I have had so many of these small sweet cherry tomatoes. The tomatoes my dad started from Burpee seeds.

I’ve also had good luck with my figs too. I have a two year old brown turkey fig plant in front of my front yard patio. Every morning I come out and harvest 2-4 and have them with my yogurt. I think the milder July helped too. We even got rain last week.
How has your gardening been this year? I would love to know and what are your favorite things to grow. I did not have luck with cucumbers, and my zucchini took over so I took it out early in the summer to make room for tomatoes and basil. I will be growing some more kale and herbs and a few root vegetables over the winter.

Heidi’s tart!
My dear pal Heidi came to visit me this week and meet the kittens and brought me a tart that was so fantastic I had to have the recipe stat! It’s the kind of tart that is not too sweet and tastes like a European bakery made it. Both Max and I loved it. She used plums, but you can adapt it for other fruits. I will try and make one this week, but I knew I would have to share here..

NO surprise this recipe is the MOST requested recipe from NYTimes and enough so that this goes along with the link….
- The Times published Marian Burros’s recipe for Plum Torte every September from 1983 until 1989, when the editors determined that enough was enough. The recipe was to be printed for the last time that year. “To counter anticipated protests,” Ms. Burros wrote a few years later, “the recipe was printed in larger type than usual with a broken-line border around it to encourage clipping.” It didn’t help. The paper was flooded with angry letters. “The appearance of the recipe, like the torte itself, is bittersweet,” wrote a reader in Tarrytown, N.Y. “Summer is leaving, fall is coming. That’s what your annual recipe is all about. Don’t be grumpy about it.” We are not! And we pledge that every year, as summer gives way to fall, we will make sure that the recipe is easily available to one and all. The original 1983 recipe called for 1 cup sugar; the 1989 version reduced that to ¾ cup. We give both options below. Here are five ways to adapt the torte.
Heidi adapted hers to be gluten free with 1/2 gf flour (Bob’s one to one), 1/4 almond flour and 1/4 corn meal. I could not tell it was as good as any regular flour tart, possibly better! The comments section is pretty fun to read too. The adapt link above tells you how to change the flour, fruit options, or add nuts and other ideas. Give this a try and I think you’ll have a lot of fans. Thank goodness baking season is coming. I’m needing it.
A few fall looks
Last week I was dreaming about back to school- aka fall clothes, warm tones, suedes, sweaters and plaids. I always love Madewell, so I made two graphics with things I’ve got on my wish list from them! They always have great basics, so look for one or two pieces to refresh and update what you own.
I’m loving this suede blazer, a bit of an investment, but a beautiful piece. Even if you just grab a pair of their aviators are SO fun in several colors, you’ll feel like you’ve got a little edge to your autumn vibe! I love the caramel colored version.
The cardigan is going strong and if you haven’t added one in the last year, this cashmere cardigan, (all on the sale) and the cashmere vest in a coffee, mink, or black are good picks. I’d layer it with a t-shirt (very 90’s) or wear alone. These darker darted barrel jeans are great wash for cooler months, and the plaid trousers are adorable! Can you see them with so much- including a sneaker and big chunky sweater? Get a blue button-up if you don’t yet have one. It’ll be a most worn piece and is flattering to almost everyone.
Both suede bags are pretty. The shoulder bag with longer strap is a more affordable version of the long strap look by Veronica Beard -and originally by Alaïa. The smaller grey satchel feels luxe and so pretty with all these fall tones. These suede penny loafers are cute -or if you don’t have a ballet flat -this leopard Mary Jane would make a look.

The weekend look has two of my favorite jackets – the quilted bomber and the green field jacket. ( I know I have a jacket problem!) The slouchy stripe pullover is my sort of California fall and winter uniform. Love the idea of it wrapped over the shoulder while wearing the black v neck shell. The darted barrel jeans come in many washes- two shown here. The nice jersey t-shirt in white- great for layering. The boat shoe is adorable with the blue shoestring. I also really dig this soft blue and white sneaker. These bags are great- the bottle green suede and the small satchel/ crossbody – both good fall updates to what you own. I added the green stone necklace. I am loving all the colored beads that are in now. I still have some in my jewelry box from ages ago and you might too.

Hopefully you’ll find one or two nice things to update what you have for fall.
Baby cat update
The kittens are getting more comfy with things. I have to say I was feeling a bit overwhelmed last week! It is hard to keep an eye on them and make sure they aren’t eating a poisonous plant – or something on the floor they shouldn’t all the time. I’ve gotten most of the house cat proofed, but they are still little mischiefs. Jackson has been over and helping when he can!

One upside of having these guys, is Max and I haven’t had time for much news. We are busy with these little buggers. Rico is very friendly and loves to work with me! It’s very sweet. Max comes home and plays even more with them in the evenings.

The little one, Alfie fell asleep with us on the couch the other night and looked so precious. They are good for the heart with the state of things.

This past week…
With Kimmel now gone, we know freedom of speech is no longer a protected right. If the president doesn’t like what you say, he’ll fire you or extort your employer to fire you. Presidents have been ridiculed by late night hosts for decades and NO ONE escaped their jokes. We are America -not Russia or North Korea.
What gives me hope is this president is deeply unpopular along with his policies. The GOP is always the loudest, but they have dwindling ranks. They are hanging on as tightly as they can, and wrecking things because they are not the future, and they know it.
This Substack- Strength in Numbers, I happened upon researching Trump’s polling numbers and it’s a great site dedicated to political commentary that is strongly fact and number based, run by a G.Elliott Morris, former journalist for the Economist. His latest article shows Americans don’t want this. Let’s stay strong, keep going and resisting. We have to stay positive. There are many demonstrations planned coming soon too.
If you missed last week’s post, I shared two days in Carmel, getting adjusted to new kittens, Michelle Dockery’s relatable and inviting home and more..
Wishing you a happy weekend,
Kim

Kim, another enjoyable post! I like your Madewell picks & that blue button up may have to head my way. The kittens are precious and it’s good to hear they are a nice distraction for you. These are very hard times, indeed. My husband and I have found distraction by watching lots of BritBox & Acorn TV—I call it “crime time!” I know we are privileged to be able to have things to distract us, but I need some breaks for my own mental health. Have a good weekend and thank you for continuing to speak out.
Thanks so much Michelle. I know a blue button-up is so good. I wear mine tons.
I know things are upside down right now.
Max and I subscribe to BritBox too and I swear it is saving us! So many great series right?
If we ever run out we are sunk. I go to bed thinking about solving the crimes, and not the state of the world, so I can sleep!
Yes we have to have breaks and distractions too. xo
Kim! I’m so glad your b-day celebrations are ongoing … and those flowers are gorgeous. And Heidi’s tart!!! I cried through Downton Abbey too … and didn’t want it to end. I adore Kristin’s t-shirt … and those ladies in period dress. How fun! I’m so impressed with the cantaloupes you grew … they’re gorgeous. I’m tempted by many of these fall pieces from Madewell … you know I love those barrel jeans. And I’m seriously eyeing the suede boat shoes. Don’t you love that boat shoes are ‘back.’ Truthfully I didn’t know they were ‘out.’ Ha! As for Trump and his ilk and the latest trampling of our rights by extorting the network to cancel Kimmel … I’ve had it. But the powers that be in big tech and other major corporations as well as Republican members of Congress are determined be cowardly, rolling over to play dead. As Liz Cheney said, ‘There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.’ I hope they will all feel the full brunt of their betrayal. On a happier note, I hope you log-off and enjoy this beautiful weekend. xo
Hi Juliet! I know DA was so good… Fun night. I want Kristin’s shirt too.
I meant to mention you have barrel jeans from them! Wasn’t sure if they are the same ones or not! They look great on you.
I know I think I have to get the suede boat shoes… I mean with slouchy jeans and a sweater they are an old school fall vibe.
Yes shocking that all the billionaire tech suck ups were also at Windsor for the Trump dinner and the Royals went along and hosted all of it. I’ve hugely lost respect for them all.
God I love that Liz quote. Gotta remember that. We could use her and her integrity so much now.
I am off the phone this weekend! xo
Hi Kim,
Gorgeous kitties thanks for sharing! I love the fact they have each other too. I am always saying to my husband I can never live without animals, as you are so right, they bring so much joy and happiness just being next to you. Downton Abbey I went twice, first with my daughter and then a friend, and both times I cried my eyes out. It is so beautifully done. The red dress Mary wore and the gorgeous dog and Barrow happy at last! Bliss. I am toying with the idea of starting the series again.
Have a wonderful weekend !!
Francesca it’s so true isn’t it? I have missed having pets around! Yes more work for sure, but worth it. I think this part – the kitten phase is the most work, but short.
Aw wasn’t Downton good? I couldn’t help it. Even my husband was crying! I was thinking too of restarting it from the beginning. I know Barrow! I loved his character too…and Mary!
It’s been so many years, it would be like a new series.
Hope you have a great weekend too. xo
Hi Kim, I love your kittens! Congratulations! We have three cats, and they scratch the furniture and leave hair all over the place, but the joy they bring makes it all worthwhile, especially during these trying times. I don’t have a cat fountain. Is the one you have very loud? It’s a super cute one. I’ve tried fountains in the past, and they have been too noisy for my cats.
I really enjoy all of your posts. Thank you so much!
All the best,
Jill
Hi Jill! Aw thank you. They are worth it aren’t they? I’ve been snuggling with them every night already!
So the fountain is so good it actually makes zero noise at all. They took about 6 days to get used to it, but love it now. It has a filter in it too.
This is it at Chewy, but you can likely get it at a local pet place too…

Hope it works! xo
Thank you, Kim!
Sure! x
Hi Kim,
Your friend Jane has excellent taste in flowers, so pretty, lunch too. Heidi too, the tart looks delish. A perfect home baked gift with love.
The three adorable ladies all dolled up to see Downton Abby are just too sweet. Also Kristin too, and Jackson styling a new hair do, I like it on him, very cool with his shades. Kristin went all in for your birthday, she is a sweetheart. No, I have not seen the film yet. I will cry too I’m sure. A big DA fan.
Your summer garden looks so good. Lots of tomatoes, and from seeds too. The cantaloupe look great.
What the Felon continues to do is discussing. I don’t totally understand why he continues to get away with these stunts and firing people the way he is. For sure dictator comes to mind, scary stuff. Brace yourself for the next oh my to drop. It feels like we have a president from Russia.
Please have a safe and happy weekend. Just keep loving all the people that mean so much to you.
I love the two little kitties. You have to watch them all the time. You must have your hands full looking after and playing with them. They are lucky to have you both as their human parents.
Keep the pictures coming.
Hi dear Katherine! Aw I am so lucky to ahem Jane and Heidi and so many of these dear pals.
Aw thanks for noticing Jackson’s hair. Those two are always so fun to hang with.
You are going to enjoy this film so much!
You are so right, all we can do now is stay strong and spend more time with those we love- and pets!
Have a lovely weekend! xo
Oh my goodness, your little kittens are adorable and they crack me up! I am sure that they are keeping you on your toes!
My friend Helen celebrates her birthday all month, not literally, but she does things with family and friends all month long, as one should to celebrate their life. It sounds as if you have been doing the same, good for you! I hope it has been wonderful!
Your future daughter in law sounds like a wonderful woman. I love that she planned this for you.
PLEASE, share the details on your toile jacket! I love it!
Your garden has done well! Sadly we have too many deer for any garden, this year they ate my wildflowers to the ground more than once. In face I woke up one morning and there were 10 deer in the wildflower circle in the front yard, needless to say harvesting any flowers was a challenge.
Your canlope look delicious.
I was inspired by you mentioning that you were making a mood board and so I made one this week!
I love these Madewell looks! So many great pieces.
Have a wonderful weekend Kim!
xo
P.S. My bike accident was a month ago, I went off road and hit a rut and fell over. The gear shift cut my knee cap open and I fell on my shoulder. Thankfully I was bruised and bloody but not broken!
Elizabeth they are so much fun! Yes I am busy all the time with them, but enjoying it. Aw thanks! Why not celebrate your birthday for a month? Yay for her.
Oh the toile jacket was from COS a year and a half ago! I adore toile too.
Oh I am sorry about your garden. Last year mine was a bust, so I felt lucky this year. It’s always a bit of a crap shoot with the weather and such. Wow I had no idea you had so many deer!
I hope you share your mood board. I am still working on mine. They are so fun.
Oh my!! Your bike accident sounds rough. I always hate ruts. They scare me on the bike. I am glad you are doing better. Sending hugs.

I’m always so appreciative of any blogger who is “real.” Thank you for not keeping your head buried in the sand. Fluff and stuff is a distraction, but ignoring our reality is denialism or complicity. I’ve disconnected with all bloggers/vloggers who do not acknowledge reality. This is how you become R-NK. Yes, the gop is always louder than we are, that is it is more important that you use your platform to state the obvious. Going to see DA tomorrow. Great blog as usual! You are very much appreciated.
Tara thank you for saying that. I wish I could ignore what is going on, but I can’t.
Totally agree with all you say here. I wish everyone who isn’t happy would use their platform. I can’t see how we will get change by bring quiet – or complacent.
Enjoy DA! Thank you for this. xo
Tara you are kind. I know it is hard with the state of the world right now, to not mention it – at least for me.
Enjoy DA!
Thank you so much for the support! I feel the same as you. xo
Love this post and all your thoughts on things. Can’t wait to see DA! I have made that plum torte before and love it – it’s good with cherries and peaches, too. Did you see that Marian Burros, the creator of that recipe, died yesterday (Sept 20)? She was 92!!
Kim thank you! I did not know it was Marian’s recipe. Thank you for sharing this. I hope you enjoy Downton! xo
Kim! What a thoughtful way for Kristin to celebrate your birthday! I can’t believe it has been 10 years! And they are engaged? How did I miss that?
Love love love that photo of you with your new kitty in your glasses! Gorgeous!
xo

We saw Downton Abbey yesterday and really enjoyed it. And yes, I got a little teary eyed. Your birthday dinner and movie sounded so nice. Thanks for sharing Strength in Numbers. I am latching on to any hope I can find. Enjoy the kittens. They are precious.
Linda it was hard not to right? Aw thank you.
I know Strength in Numbers is a great source! We need the facts and hope.

Hi Kim…a friend, originally from the UK , booked the date with me for the Downton Abbey movie a couple of months ago. Tickets for the matinee , at seniors rates , easy to acquire. Very well done. CBC is showing the original drama every weekday afternoon…so it’s recorded for later viewing. Chopped up with ads , but that’s the joy of recording their programmes. Impressive veggie garden you and Max have … friends and neighbours have been sharing their grape tomatoes…so roasting and making sauces for pasta. I added a bit of cottage cheese to one batch to make a creamier version. I look forward to baking this fall and have always made a version of the plum tart ( 1/2 sized spring form pan) …peaches with blueberries works well too. I made a lemon , blueberry , and yoghurt cake for company the other night…yummy and healthy. I love my Pinterest files…so easy to find recipes…with so many categories now! I agree with being hooked on British mysteries…Apple + tv is my one subscription…and the next season of Slow Horses is coming this week. A tad brutal, but writing is good. PBS still going strong from Washington state , so Sunday night is great viewing. I subscribe to keep it going, as well as having the ability to stream on my I pad . Shocking recent news , but happily there are diversions to keep us balanced. Hang in there, Kim.
Hi Catherine!!
How are you? How nice to do this with a friend! I love that you can catch the original too. I would love to start from the beginning again it’s been so long, I’ve forgotten lot of it.
I wish I could share some grape tomatoes with you too. Great idea roasting them! I love the cottage cheese idea… and the peaches and blueberries idea.
Oh yogurt cake. Wow. Pinterest is a great idea.
Agree about Slow Horses. Looking forward to it. Thanks for supporting PBS too!
Take care. xo

Hi Kim — It sounds like you had a fabulous birthday celebration! Your garden looks amazing. I can’t believe you grew those cantaloupes! Love your fall Madewell choices. I am thinking about my fall wardrobe too. I will definitely give the plum cake a try!
Hi Molly! Aw I can’t believe I grew those cantaloupes either. LOL. Try the plum cake. xo
Wow quite an informative post! Looks like you had a fabulous birthday celebration! Definitely want to see the final DA movie. My husband will cry too, it doesn’t take much… he does it way more often than I. I would love to do raised beds after my husband retires, you had quite some success this year. Your kitchens are so cute, we had cats growing up but then my mom finally came home with a dog one day. I never had a dog as an adult until I was 40. We have been dogless for over 3 years now but I would love to get another, however there are a lot of work and responsibility. But they do make life better. ❤️
Great Fall clothing round up! I recently read the Barn Coat is very popular this season. Banana Republic was having a sale (through today I believe) and I had my eye on one but when I went to purchase a few days ago they were already sold out of every size! I ended up purchasing a sweater instead.
I was so upset about Kimmel, my husband and I looked forward to watching his monologue on YouTube every night before bed. It was the one thing keeping us sane. Jimmy said nothing bad about Charlie Kirk, his comments were directed at Trump and MAGA and because our president is so thin skinned he made sure he was gone. I’m not surprised though, it was no secret that there was no love lost between the two. I quite often watch The View, but mostly just the hot topics the first 15 minutes or so unless there is someone on that I really care to see. Apparently they have not discussed CK on the show so you know they are fearful for their jobs. What a sad state of affairs. I hope ABC loses a ton of money, so. many people are cancelling Hulu, Disney and ESPN.
Try and have a good week!
Linda
Hi Linda, I think you would love the raised beds. Aw I haven’t had a dog since I was a kid. Still might get one! Always have had cats though. It’s true they are all work, but they do give so much love to the home.
BR is a great place to get a barn coat. Darn I hate the sales like that. I’d check back. I missed that sale and they do have great sweaters.
Ugh so awful and Jimmy. I am glad he is back after public outcry!! We need to do the same to Trump.
Have a great week too. xo
Hi Kim, I’m glad to hear you’re still enjoying birthday fun and surprises. Also so glad to read above that CBC is playing the Downton Abbey series in the afternoons – I’ve added it to my PVR list. The plum tart you mentioned sounds delicious. Sounds like your kitties are excellent for your mental health!
Patricia thank you! Yes the kitties are good for me! Enjoy the Downton too. xo
Hi, Kim —
Great varied post, as usual! I am falling hard for barrel jeans. And I am going to have to make that tart! It has nearly 20,000 five-star reviews on the New York Times cooking.
I read that the Royals pumped up trump for the purpose of flattering him prior to his meeting with PM Starmer, hoping trump may be swayed to offer more support for Ukraine. I am mostly avoiding the news beyond the NYT and PBS NewsHour, so I don’t know if that tactic worked or not.
Another recommendation I’ve seen is to write to the advertisers on your local Sinclair news broadcast and let them know you will be boycotting their products until Jimmy Kimmel is back on the air. We certainly have “Strength in Numbers”, based on the link you posted to that terrific website. The current disapproval rating gives me a bit of hope for the midterms. Husband and I are also considering moving to Canada (I have citizenship), but it’s hard to move farther from the offspring, even if they are now adults! 🙁
Hi Julia! They are so cute aren’t they? You are likely right about the royals and I know they wanted to persuade Trump to keep supporting Ukraine. This week at the UN he really said some terrible things after they were so kind to him. PBS is my go to also.
I think so many of us would love to move if we could. Canada is such a great place with lovely people. Yet so hard to leave family. I couldn’t do that either.
xo
Hi Kim. Just returned from my European holiday and wanted to say thank you. It was only through your blog I knew about the Worth exhibition in Paris. We managed to get tickets and thoroughly enjoyed it, some of the dresses (especially the 1936 gown) would not look out of place these days. Unfortunately, did not manage to get any shopping done, so I left Paris without the bag you had bought – but, was able to pick up a similar style in Longchamp. Saw the DA movie and have watched the series, but, not to be a grinch, always felt it was a bit of a poor ripoff of Upstairs Downstairs (which seems very dated now). Preferred Gosford park, the movie, to Downton Abbey. I try not to get involved in American politics. My sister (a naturalised American) loathes the current administration, but her hubbie (and his family) love Trump – needless to say, family get together (when they are in Oz) can be very spiky. As for the Royal Family, they would have wined and dined your President at the behest of the UK govt, just as the Queen was forced to meet and greet the former head of the IRA.
Hi Susan! Oh I am so glad you for to the Worth show! I know I loved those gowns too.
Yay for the Longchamp bag. I would have loved to get one of those. A good choice.
Oh yes I would love to watch the Upstairs Downstairs and you are right. Fellows absolutely got that idea from that show!
Oh it’s so hard when family has political differences. I have the same and it is hard. I am sure you are right about the Royals.
Poor Kate.
So glad you had a good trip! xo
Oh gosh Kim kitties! We had our last but we do have a pup that will probably always be a pup, so I can identify with your issues!! I have been eyeing that Madewell blazer and thinking about pulling the trigger as well!
Hi Kim
I love some of the Madewell items. I am somewhat disappointed (ok, meaning I won’t buy) in their leather jackets as they are not lined! I hope it is okay to write about a jacket that I recently picked up at Nordstrom – it is by Mango and the style, color and details would be at home with a much more expensive brand. The difference is that it is a pleather (vegan leather). But for $100.00, it is lined! Mango is building brick and mortars in the Bay Area and I am looking forward to seeing this brand in person other than the small selection at Nordstrom Still love Madewell for non-leather clothing and accessories.
Susan of course! Much appreciate your feedback! I will look for it.
Mango really has some nicely designed things.I have a few Mango things I have had forever. They used to have a store in SF Centre a few years back.
Yes Madewell has to work on a few things. I would like to see less synthetic sweaters too from them. Good design, we just have to see what will last from them. xo
