On October’s Signature Style, Cindy and I are sharing blazers and jackets we love. Today, a few of my favorites and some of the best in stores and online!
I love all jackets, but especially a plaid blazer in fall. It says back to school, and reminds me of pouring over Seventeen Magazine as a teen and dreaming of fall outfits. I still get excited when I get fall catalogs. I don’t need much, but I always manage to get a new jacket or two every year, because well- jackets!
This catalog from Ann Mashburn came last week and the cover is so good…I want this whole look.

The classic plaid blazer
I am always saving pics with great styling and this I saved from somewhere, and love it. Happy to credit it if anyone knows the source!

But back to blazers and that fall in the air feeling. You need at least one plaid blazer in your closet. I have two. I added this one (below center) in a menswear suiting by Ba&sh last year. I had tried it at the shopping event last year, and decided later I had to have it. I knew it would be something I will hopefully wear for many years. It’s now one of my favorites.

Back to school sort of plaid blazers I love right now…
J. Crew has this double breasted number (has a matching skirt with ruffles), Banana Republic has been creating some of the nicest pieces and this Boyfriend Italian Wool Plaid is pretty and fresh in this lighter color. I also love this Reiss River Blazer

I spotted this nice plaid oversized blazer at Gap. This one you need to size down, but it’s 40% off now too. On the other end of the spectrum is this pretty Rag & Bone jacket with a sweater that zips out and is an investment, but gorgeous.

This shrunken herringbone blazer also fits the category and is a lovely classic, as is this Jac Blazer by Rails.

The basic blazer in black
We all need one of these. I love my Rag& Bone Slade Jacket I’ve had for years. It’s a Japanese wool and feels like a sweater, but is versatile for travel, and can dress up or down. It was an investment, but I wear it tons. I call it one of my best basics and throw it on with a cami or t-shirt and add a scarf if it’s cold.

Alternatively, this Alex Mill jacket comes in black, grey, or navy chalkstripes. I love Alex Mill items. Always beautiful quality.
I also found this similarly shaped, but lighter Felted Chore Jacket by Buck Mason. It comes in black, sable brown or a tan.

There is also a Quince dupe of this jacket. Reviews are mixed. If you can save for the real thing, it may be worth waiting for.
Sweater Jackets
This category has exploded as of late and there isn’t a brand that isn’t making a cardigan/jacket look. Not all are created equal. Look for nicer ones that will hold their shape. You want a higher percentage of wool or cotton in these than synthetic.
Last month I shared the Betty cardigan from Sezane that is a knit that doesn’t wrinkle and yet is soft and looks so good on. I want another I love it so much! The colors change seasonally on this perennial best seller for them.

Ba&sh Gaspard Knit Jackets are another great design. I have two colors and they add instant polish. The details on these jackets -the lovely buttons and a teeny shoulder pad, make these so much more than the usual cardigan.
By the way, I am having a shopping and styling event with Ba&sh today at Valley Fair Bloomingdales, 3-5. You can shop these sweaters and see the fall collection!

The Gaspard in brown is a good one with all the fall tones. Ba&sh also has a new double breasted version of this knit jacket called the Louman.

Similar knit jackets at J. Crew here and here, and this by Splendid, and this.
Also on my radar is this lovely London Sweater Blazer by Alex Mill. It comes in a bone, grey, or black. Hard part is what color to choose…Alex Mill pieces are always wonderful quality.

There is a similar shaped sweater by Quince, a bit more affordable, and another by Pistola, and also this cute one at Gap in a pretty grey and creme.
Chanel type blazers
I love these boucle sort of jackets with jeans or a skirt or over a dress. I splurged and bought a Meredith Jacket from Ba&sh last year. These jackets are beautifully made and may be the nicest piece in my closet.

The Meredith Jacket colors change seasonally. I love burgundy and tan for autumn, but a cream or black would be closet heroes.

Maje also has a lovely boucle jacket and this berry Tweed by Aqua is a good price and pretty color, as is the chocolate.

I hope you found a jacket to consider for your fall and winter capsule. I just adore jackets and I think they are money well spent.
If you missed last month’s Signature Style, we shared personal closet favorites that we reach for again and again.
Happy Fall !

Great ideas here! I wore jackets every day in my former work life and now that I’m retired, while some of those are just too traditional and will not work, it’s great to see modern blazers in everyday outfits I would actually wear. Jackets are the perfect third piece.
Laura I totally get that! I know nice to see them as part of daily wear since they are so flattering.
I love that third piece idea.
I have some beautiful thrifted jackets but forget to add them when getting ready. Thank you Kim for reminding me how versatile the can be! Love your posts!
Vikki I have found some great ones thrifting too! I need to add that.
Thank you! x
Hi, Kim –
You have so many lovely jackets! I am also a fan of classic jackets, and wish the shoulder seasons — when you just need a light layer — were longer where I live. They seem so short, and I don’t get to wear my favorites before the rains start.
Is that second photo with all the necklaces possibly the Madewell plaid jacket from a year or two ago? I purchased that one after you featured it. I need to wear it!
Quick reminder from the lovely city of Portland, Oregon — which is neither on fire nor war-ravaged — to all your readers to get out and march on Saturday! This could be a bigger turnout than the Women’s March!
Love that look you pinned… especially the necklaces…would love a post on jewelry looks… trying to make do with what we have,,,
Great compilation of jacket options!! Your posts are super and I read them over several times and take notes. I am fairly done with most ‘high end ‘ fashion magazines because let’s get real..maybe that is an overblown statement but fantasy shoots won’t give you serious ideas about day to day wear. I do appreciate the articles and beauty tips, however and know there is employment in these genres. I’l stick to your suggestions..
Aw thanks Donnie. That is kind of you Glad you find the blog helpful! I feel the same about fashion magazines now. Rarely are they practical about building a wardrobe anymore! x
Ba&sh is a new brand to me…do the jackets run true to size? I would typically be a medium in most, but I looked at the measurements online and I look to me a large. Would love your feedback.
Hi Sara!
It really depends on the jacket. I feel like the sweater jackets do run small but others run large is there a particular one that you liked? I have small in most of these jackets, even though I would consider myself a medium.
Kim you are so stylish…I always learn something from you. That Alex Mill number I am coveting as well now! Thanks to you! I am determined to attend one of your events soon!!
