I did get to see the new Anthropologie with my pal Heidi this week. She was invited to the Santa Cruz opening and asked me to join. This was in a lovely old bank building and it’s a gorgeous store. The downtown area in SC could use the traffic. I hope it helps the area thrive. There are so many closed storefronts now. Still it is always a joy to walk downtown Santa Cruz. We shopped and had a nice lunch.
This is the new shop. They had a free coffee bar and gave little bouquets to customers. The store is decked in a lot of spring and resort wear and cute home items. Next week I’ll share the two t shirts I bought.
Jackson and Max went to Tahoe to try the new snowshoes we bought for the cabin and got some lovely sun and snow….
I’ve been getting over a cold, but enjoying time with my kittens. Apparently air plants aren’t poisonous to cats, so I’ve been rolling with those…
Wiggy Hindmarch’s beautiful London home on the Thames
I am crazy about the home of designer Wiggy Hindmarch on Homeworthy last week. Wiggy is a British designer who spent a large part of her life in America, and her taste is a hybrid of the two. I am crazy about the colors of this home, and have myself wondering if I can used Benjamin Moore’s Toasted Marshmallow on my walls too? It’s so good with the blue accents for some reason. Her home has a beachy English county look and I find it so pretty.

Wiggy has a clothing brand called Wiggy Kit. She sells clothes with an emphasis on versatility that can go daytime to night to beaches or school pick ups. The clothes look gorgeous and are pretty high end.
How the Estée Lauder Companies and Ronald Lauder support Trump and pushed him to take Greenland
I shared on my Instagram this week about Ronald Lauder, the heir and chair of Estée Lauder companies and how his money is used to influence (starting in 2018), Trump to acquire Greenland. Lauder has business interests in Greenland and Ukraine as well. Lauder, an 81 year old billionaire, doesn’t care about NATO either or the peaceful world America has enjoyed for 80 years with our allies. He just wants to make more money and needs us to own Greenland for that to happen. Imagine if these guys wanted to leave the world a better place??!
Particularly awful is the fact that Ronald helped get Trump elected twice. He’s a huge donor and gave $6 million to him in the last year alone. When I think of that Lauder fortune, I think of women and their loyalty to their cosmetic brands. I spent 7 years working in cosmetics. I started in Lancome, went to Lauder and then Borghese. One thing I won’t forget is how women were dedicated to their beloved beauty products. When something was discontinued, it was hugely upsetting. Most of my customers weren’t rich, in fact many didn’t have much to spend at all, but they still budgeted for their lipsticks and things, and stayed true to their brands.
My point is the Lauders are billionaires thanks to the money and loyalty of women! The irony is this man took our own dollars and used them to install the most misogynistic man on the planet, who brags he overturned our rights as women to choose. That is heinous.
What can we do? We can stop buying products from the Lauder Companies! We can share with our friends too.
I’ve done the research and they solely own all these brands they have snapped up, often to the detriment of some small companies that had previously ethical practices. (EL companies still test on animals to be able to sell in China.)
These are the brands we need to boycott. I know many of you have used products for years from them, but we can find alternatives!
Brands to consider that are clean and are not owned by the Estee Lauder companies.
A great source is Credo Beauty. I have written about them before as they have standards for ingredient safety that are higher than government standards.. They care about the packaging and treatment of animals and people in the making of products. Every brand sold meets standards. They have store in many cities ( 3 in San Francisco, 4 in LA, 2 in Chicago, 2 in Boston, New York, Portland and Seattle) If you don’t have a store nearby, the site is easy to shop and they ship free for orders over $35.
Grove Collaborative, which I have written about before and use to order household things, instead of Amazon or Target, carries clean beauty brands and skincare.
Some of other clean and independent brands I have used and like below. I will try and add more next week! I would love to hear if there are some you use and love too. If there is a Lauder brand item you are trying to replace, please share in comments. I may have ideas for you, as well as other readers! Let’s help each other make a dent in their bottom line and make better choices for us!
RMS Beauty Rose-Marie Swift was a makeup artist for over 30 years, her lightbulb moment was realizing that cosmetics could be made with better, safer ingredients. She is unwavering in her quest for innovative clean ingredients, so she launched RMS Beauty in 2009 to clean up the industry and set a higher standard. I love her tutorials and each product feels amazing that I have tried. This brand has won awards for their Radiance Locking Primer , and I like the Luminizer , Eye Brightener, the Supernatural Sunscreen and the lip pencils. Each item has a great tutorial by her you can watch.
Gucci Westman I mentioned makeup artist Gucci last week and her beautiful products that are clean and not tested on animals. The brow pencil is so good, as are the face contour sticks you can use all over.
Odacité founder Valérie Grandury began her brand following a breast cancer diagnosis. In 2009, she challenged the beauty industry, creating formulas with science and the luxury of French skincare with the green spirit of California. Odacité products are handcrafted in their own Los Angeles lab. The creamy cleanser, eye creme and Super Serum are popular and I want to try them!
Osea Inspired by her grandmother’s lifelong love of the sea, Jenefer Palmer set out to share her passion through a plant-based skin care line infused with elements of the ocean. Distraught by the harmful chemicals she found in other products, she crafts Osea formulas with safe, nourishing ingredients. I have used the Anti-Aging Body Balm, and the Ocean Cleanser and loved them. You can find all their products here. This is a mother-daughter owned California business based in Malibu California! They have a new pm retinol trio here.
Tata Harper Gorgeous line that is clean. Tata was determined to find natural products not laced with petrochemicals after a family member was diagnosed with cancer and told to lessen his toxic load. Tata applied her background in industrial engineering to develop 100% natural high-performance skincare. I have used this Waterlock Moisturizer with a clean pop up dispenser that is refillable, and the Brightening Eye Gel which has a bit of gleam for your eye in the morning. Love the metal applicator too.
Necessaire A wonderful line that my neighbor started me on. I have also given the body lotion and shower gel as gifts. The packaging is modern and pretty and they are committed to healthy products, that are vegan. They also donate 1% of all their profits to environmental charities.
Sweed I was sent Sweed’s natural eyelash serum and mascaras and like them. Sweed saves a baby sea turtle for every mascara bought. All their products are vegan and clean. I especially like the Satin Eyeliner in Golden Beetle.
Ursa Major is based in Vermont. Their Alpine Rich Creme is a moisturizer that is a barrier creme that goes a long way to hydrate winter skin. I am sensitive and it is effective and not too heavy. They also have other cool serums, moisturizers and cleansers that are forest infused with clean ingredients, and better packaging too.
Chantecaille is a gorgeous brand that is vegan, cruelty free and also gives back to many causes. Their Future Skin Foundation is a splurge, but wonderful in an easy compact. All their lovely products here.
Ilia Love their mascara! It’s won Allure’s award for best clean mascara many years. It also looks gorgeous and stays on without flaking and is off in an instant when I wash my face. Ilia products are ethical, clean, and great for sensitive people. Their Face Milk, might be a good alternative for people who want to switch from the Clinique yellow moisturizer. Weleda – Affordable and amazing. Their Skin Food handcreme keeps my hands from looking like I am the crypt keeper in winter. I go through a tube every few weeks and the best way is to put a dime size blob on the backs of your hands and rub into the cuticles also about 3xs a day and a night. This is so pure all plant based I can use it on my face when it is extremely dry at night. I also used their baby line when my kids were small and adore the Baby Calendula Face Cream for my kids and myself! Weleda is a non-profit, committed to a better earth, and are all plant based, cruelty free and natural and made on a co-op in Germany. Explore all their products here. What a great post Kim! I had not realised the Ronald Lauder connection until you posted on Instagram about it. It’s scary to think how there are all these connections beneath the surface that probably never see the light of day, Like a spider web of unlimited nastiness. I linked to that Guardian article in my comment on your Instagram post as the venality of it took my breath away. I also mentioned I stopped buying EL products years ago as they are not cruelty free and I am glad I did now. It’s something that is important to me personally so I always look for the Leaping Bunny or PETA logo. For that reason I haven’t bought L’Oreal, Garnier and a host of other brands for years when it comes to make-up, skincare and cleaning products.
I am also fighting a losing battle with my houseplants vs, kitten Mabel! She is obsessed with them so I think I will follow your example and look into airplants!
As I write this I have also just read that ICE agents detained a two year old little girl in Minnesota and took her to a detention centre in Texas along with her father. It defies belief and makes me feel quite ill. And I don’t even live in the US. I think the wee mite has been returned now to her mother but only after a court judgement forced them to!

Oh golly how is Mabel? They are so obsesses with plants. I am in the same boat and always worried about poisonous ones. Someone just told me daffodils are! I had no clue.

You may not have a choice, but it won’t hurt to let them know why we are opposed to the brand and what they are doing. I would bet so many in the hair business have no idea the evil they are doing.
Why are so many bloggers are still recommending Amazon finds and using it as a reference? Unbelievable.
I refuse to give Bezos a penny and those who are still sending money his way, are okay with their money funding support of Trump through donations and newspaper articles, that got him elected. He’s another super rat.
I have used Clinique products for over 40 years but that is stopping now. Can you recommend a good lipstick to replace Clinique? I have had issues with other brands (drugstore and more expensive) that make my lips itch. I will try out some of your suggestions for other products and I am glad that you shared this with your readers.
Robin, see how loyal women are? They made an empire on that.
If you have sensitive lips, I would try something like a cleaner brand. I also have sensitive lips and like Trish McEvoy, Chanel, Hourglass, Chantecaille, and Clarins lip things. You may need to try a few- and make sure you save the box. Most places let you return now if you have issues with a product.

Kim, thank you SO MUCH for all the research on alternative resources for skincare and makeup. I find Lauder absolutely despicable. What a hideous human being. I will begin my research for an alternative to the Jo Malone fragrance I have worn for 20 years. Oh well, it’s probably time anyway.

Good luck checking the alternatives. Get a lot of samples. Even just ask at the fragrance counter. They will hand you many. Google your specific scent saying alternative.. People online often have ideas to replace certain scents.

Looks like you had a fun time at the new Anthropologie store. Thanks for the heads up about Ronald Lauder. I have always purchased Lancome makeup products, ever since I had a makeover at The Broadway back in my early 20’s. I have purchased Jo Malone and Aerin colognes, but primarily Aerin products at Willliams Sonoma. Since it’s a collaboration I am wondering how much profit does she receive? I did some research and her company is not independent of Estée Lauder. Ronald’s net worth is estimated at 4.9 billion and Aerin’s is 1.9 billion. How much money do these billionaires need? Sickening.
I missed the Homeworthy tour of Wiggy’s home, I can’t keep up with them all anymore because they put out more than one a day it seems. So I just pick and choose the ones I want to watch, but even then I miss some goods ones that end up resurfacing months later. I will have to check out Wiggy’s tour.

Kim thank you for the list of Lauder brands. I wear minimal makeup but I’m going to go home and recheck what I do have! My lipsticks aren’t Lauder brands and I *think* my mascara is ILIA, so I might be good. I use a Northern California derm’s skin products (Prequel by Dr Samantha Ellis). I love the home decor pictures that you posted. There’s something so reassuring and cozy about British decor–it seems to unaffected and *loved*. American style decor feels too manicured these days: off the shelf; buy and then toss and update. No history. No individuality. I know the *trend* is moving away from this mindset, and I’m glad for it. Love your posts, Kim.

As to alternatives, for years I bought certain makeup items at my natural food store, from Gabriel Cosmetics, also producing the ZuZu Luxe brand. I now order directly from the company at gabrielcosmeticsinc.com.

Morning Kim! Thanks for all the tips on better choices for skin care. I have used EL for years and as my pots of moisturizers are running low, I will discontinue EL for good. Purchased Caudalie and wonder what your thoughts are on their products. I now live in AZ and need something to help offset the desert climate. I may go to OSEA as I love LA (lived there for 25 years!).

Really enjoyed your post and thank you for all the research. I was using Bobbi Brown but not any more! I will keep away from all the brands you mentioned. I do like Westman Atelier blush and used it for my daughter’s wedding as it was recommended and it is my favorite now. These billionaires in the States who are trying to force international and domestic policies for their own agendas make me so angry. I have been disgusted this week in particular with the latest comments coming from The White House about England’s troop involvement in Afghanistan. and article 5 of the NATO Agreement. To speak with such disrespect about your allies is just a real turning point. And to Canada…..the list goes on. It is appalling.

Lauder is trying to do a bottled water business and possibly other things he has there. He just received a mining contract awarded by the Ukrainian government, no doubt pressured by Trump.

I have used many of these brands over the years, and I’m still a Clinique fan, but that’s going to change as soon as the products are gone. It sickens me that I have given this billionaire money to support the evilness going on in this current administration. Praying for our country.

Great article. Thanks for bring awareness to your readers. I am happy to see that I don’t use any of the listed brands. I quite using department store cosmetics years ago because they’re overpriced and ineffective. You can get prescription solutions from your dermatologist that work and cost less.

Hi Kim, Lauder also paid Cuomo to redistrict NY state to favour GQP, which last the Dems the house. He is super corrupt, and rumoured to be in the list. He also funded anti Mandami propoganda in the recent NYC Mayorial race, was pro Cuomo (creep). Esteee Lauder group recently acquired The Ordinary. A good alternative make up brand is Jones Road, owned by Bobbi Brown.
I am so careful where I spend my money, its a real pain to shop with me. Sephora is another Trump supporter……..

I did some digging on Sephora and Open Secrets says they did not donate, however the company is owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) and the leader was at the Trump inauguration so I call BS on that. Of course they gave money to him. Def someplace to look to replace.

I had no idea about Lauder and all the other cosmetic companies he owns. No thank you. I’m glad he does not own Chanel. Have you found an eye shadow brand that meets all the good guidelines that your eyes can tolerate? I’ve used MAC, Chanel (been out for a long time) picked up NAKED 2 Urban DECAY BASICS. The consistency of the powder I think is loose and I think some of the particles gets into my eyes. Then the next morning they are red, dry eye worse, inflammation city. Have you found an eye shadow that is super good? I love Chanel lipstick, do you know of a better one?

Wow! Lots of research here. Well done. But, oh no! I have recently started using The Ordinary’s Natural Moisturizing Factors for a daytime moisturizer and really like it for winter dryness. I will definitely need to keep looking! My daughter is also into Deciem/The Ordinary so I will share this post with her. So sneaky to hide under so many umbrellas, isn’t it? We have to keep fighting them and hitting them in the wallet. Perhaps it’s the only language they understand. Kim, I’m disappointed – to put it mildly – to learn of Lauder’s support for Trump, particularly the latest nonsensical aggression toward Greenland. I’ve been partial to Clinique since I was a teen … as you say, we stay loyal. Other their moisture surge product there are no Lauder owned products in my bathroom, thank goodness. I’ve been meaning to do a makeup refresh with someone at our local Blue Mercury and see that they carry the RMS brand. I’m also interested in trying Merit and Victoria Beckham and a brief search suggests their hands are clean. I hope so. Anyway, what’s happening in Minnesota is heartbreaking and it’s impossible to accept this is happening in our country. And some people are ok with it. On a pleasanter note, I’m now a fan of Wiggy … what a great name. I took a look through her website and she does have wonderful pieces … definitely higher end, but fabulous. Can’t wait to view her home tour this afternoon. Thanks for being so vigilant and keeping us on our toes. xo

I would expect the same thorough investigation into Anthropologie as you have done into Lauder etc. You are championing a business that sources clothing from china and India. Where do you draw your line?
I am not championing it at all. I was invited to an opening by my friend and it is a local new store, so I went. I personally don’t buy much from Anthropologie because it is skewing younger and their own brand quality hasn’t been good. Their own in house brand won’t disclose their supply chain details, after previously being a B Corp, which isn’t ever good. I do occasionally buy something there, but if you noticed I am not recommending it and I am happy to address it on another post.
Also, Anthropologie is not using their money to put a misogynistic psychopath in power, nor invade another nation with a billions built on the dollars of women. Their giving record shows democratic donations from GoodUnite Us and other places.
The ethics of retailers while very important, isn’t my first concern right now. Let’s focus on the our nation and the destruction of the peace and the dissolving of the world order right now that Lauder had a HUGE part in.
I am a fan of Jane Iredale cosmetics for mineral face powder as well as eye shadows , and often purchase at a local esthetics studio nearby. Lise Watier is a Canadian brand that I use for skin care…lovely and purchased at our local Shoppers Drug , where I accumulate loyalty points. Both brands can be found on line.
At 75, there’s definitely some chin sagging, but happily few lines. Some of your readers might like to explore.

WOW — I had no idea of the breadth of the Lauder empire and patriarch Ronald’s political power — thank you for this valuable info, Kim. For me, it is much more difficult to kiss Amazon goodbye, living in a small town in the middle of a low population state, but I can and do look for alternative sources. For beauty products, I mostly use Indie stuff, tho I’ve stayed loyal to one old Bumble and Bumble hair product that I can find a sub for! I’ll just second that I like the Ilia mascara a lot. I use it over a Chanel eyelash base (a great product for wimpy Asian lashes). One natural makeup line I’ve used for 10+ years is Jane Iredale, which many dermatologists recommend: very clean, easy to use products. I use their powder foundation, loose powder, powder blushes and several lip glosses. This is truly down market, but I have happily used the Maybelline eye pencil for 45 years, and for the past year, the Maybelline SuperStay Ink Crayon lipstick, after my previous lip crayon (liner and lip color in one) was discontinued. I have oily eyelids, and the Maybelline pencil is the only one I’ve found that will stay on as a smudged line all day (I put a bit of powder over it).

The new Anthropologie is beautiful, I love when they use old buildings. There is one in Philly in an old bank and it is so cool. They always have some fun pieces for house and wardrobe.

I know little about air plants, except they look like succulents that you can place anywhere and they need occasional bit of watering or a good soaking every month. I found I can sustain them for years! Nice alternative to plastics- and they clean the air.

I am at the one year mark for no Bezos (zero Amazon; cancelled Wash Post subscription), no Target, Walmart, etc (I love shopping locally!) and have not purchased any Under Armor clothing since their idiot CEO endorsed Trump back in 2016. I am actively looking for more ways to make an economic impact….and I send these kind of updates around to all of my friends. I know not everyone can make this work, and that’s okay. If everyone just did one small thing, it would make a real difference. This administration cannot be shamed, but they definitely react to economic incentives.

Thank you for all the great suggestions! I did purchase two Trinny London eyeshadows, e.l.f. Mascara and Weleda baby face cream. I’m excited to try the new eyeshadows, and recently refreshed my makeup so the timing was perfect.

I’ve had to pull back from reading much of the current news, as it’s just too heartbreaking to hear over and over how brutal and dangerous the Trump thugs have become….in the name of democracy.
