Pretty Neutrals with Texture for a Fresh Start, Rails Pieces, and More

January 2, 2026 By kimwheeler 51 Comments

On this post, a few of the things we did on the break, pretty neutral pillows and throws for a fresh start, a book to read now, a show to stream, and a sweater and jacket to grab before they are gone.

How were your holidays? Ours were low key and since we only had three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I felt a bit behind. I started by putting up my pink tree. I had the guys move my dining table down a bit and placed it in front of the dining room windows. It was the first time I’ve had a tree you could see from the street, and it just looked so cheery. I thought this is enough and I never put the big green tree up. The kittens enjoyed it and were pretty good about mostly napping under it.

I was a little sad not to have Griffin here. Still this was a nice year because we did less. I just made one batch of cookies. I only put up my favorite ornaments and decorations. We bought just 2-3 gifts per person (kids included) and a stocking. I didn’t exchange gifts with most pals, instead opting for coffees or lunches. It was the most low stress holiday yet and it was NICE! We did more and bought less.

I always want my kids here to decorate the tree, but this year I did it alone. On a dusky early evening, I listened to holiday tunes, drank tea, and appreciated each ornament. A holiday song from the 80’s came on and I somehow remembered a high school Christmas gathering and the gifts we bought, and a special sweater someone got me I treasured. It’s surprising the moments that can feel magical and they often aren’t when you expect them. That afternoon by myself and my cats was one of the highlights of this season.

One day I got a Christmas package in the mail and it was a boat tote from Juliet…personalized for me with a cute scarf and NCS for Northern California Style. I was so excited! I can’t wait to use it. Today on her blog, I think she’ll be sharing more about these cute totes and how she customizes them for gifts. I felt lucky to get a Juliet edition!

I made my Christmas lasagnas for my dad and us. Dad made us his wonderful cinnamon rolls, this year with Jackson helping him. We enjoyed them on Christmas day…

Kristin had a nice longer med school break, so we got to spend more time with her and Jackson. Her family is British, and invited us to have Christmas night pudding and mince pies with them! (Kristin did a great job on the pies.) We had so much fun. On NYE they celebrate London time – 4p.m. We were included in that too and Jackson helped roast chestnuts, and we had a toast and watched the New Year’s shows from the UK. Nice to get to bed earlier too.

I made this appetizer to bring. It’s a variation on my summer version of this. You spread soft cheese into a tree shape. I used two Snofrisk Dill spreadable cheese containers. The top with fresh cherry tomatoes (the Flavor Bomb ones are good right now), basil, and then drizzle with balsamic glaze and sprinkle toasted almond slices. (Trader Joe’s pre-toasted ones are great) I used a few pecans for the trunk and placed a bowl of pita chips on the tray. I wasn’t sure if this was too summery, but it turned out to be a hit.

We didn’t make it up to San Francisco until the 27th, but it was sunny and the city was uncrowded. We did lunch and shopping with Jackson and Kristin at Neiman’s.

So far The Rotunda is still going. Everyone is a popover fan. (Max!) I love this spot on top of the SF Neiman Marcus. We didn’t have reservations but got there about 30 minutes before opening and got a table. You can always eat in the bar too.

Beautiful Neiman’s windows.

While shopping I fell in love with this Rails sweater (it runs big I bought xs). I also ordered this Rails Jacket with fringe I’ve had my eye on for months, (now 30% off. I ordered small.) I will see which I like better, but I wanted to get both and see before they are gone. I love my Rails things they are so nice.

I’m leaving my tree up until Griffin is home on the 5th. Kristin’s family have told me under no terms should I remove anything Christmas until Epiphany on January 6th, so I am obeying! I don’t mind having the fairy lights on these dark days. I flip on the tree as soon as I am up, and I will be sad to part with it!

Griffin has been enjoying packing through Europe. He sent many pictures of Zermatt and skiing in the Alps. The food at the ski resorts in Italy looks amazing. No burnt hot dogs like here. Right now they are in Berlin and the NYE celebrations in the streets were nuts. He didn’t send me the photos of all the rogue fireworks until he was safely back from it! He comes home in a few days. I was so heartbroken to hear of all the young people who were caught in that fire in the bar on NYE in Switzerland. My heart goes out to those families. Griffin was not far from there.

Palate Cleanser

I was in Pottery Barn before Christmas and this neutrals collection was calling to me. I bought this floral wool pillow (left) and the sequin one (on sale now), and a boucle pillow (also on sale.) I also love this woven wool one and this throw for the sectional. I also saw this beautiful throw. Maybe it’s the color riot of the holidays, but I was ready to have a calming space again. I already put them out…

At the store…

A few of these neutral pieces from my Shop My store.

Inspiring me…

I love this California home of Georgia Howe. It’s got a lovely palette and a mix of old and new furniture styles…

I’m watching…

Max and I started The Hardacres this week. It’s on Britbox and it’s very good. It’s a tale of a working class Yorkshire family that moves from the fish docks to an expansive estate thanks to a business venture. If you can get Britbox, it’s worth the subscription. There are so many great shows I could never see them all.

I’m reading…

My neighbor Kim gave me All the Beauty in the World for Christmas and I’ve just begun the true story of a man who left his job to work at the Met after losing his brother. It’s about life and art and I’m enjoying it very much. A great one for the New Year.

Our Country

I cannot believe all that has happened in the past year to this nation under Trump. It will go one record as maybe the worst ever for human rights, and dismantling our nation’s protections, and policies, and agencies that protect us and our food, water, health and education, and so much else. As fast as they could, this administration has broken all norms and laws, and is using corruption and crypto as a side gig. We all need to be concerned and I hope more of you will consider speaking out this year, and using your voices, and platforms if you have one. This is year one of a presidency with truly evil plans that have yet to even happen.

While billionaires line up to pledge allegiance to this regime, regular citizens are fighting back. I am grateful to social media for educating us on what agencies like USAID, the FDA, the EPA, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau did, before they were dismantled and defunded. I believe we are more aware now of the protections we had and took for granted. It helps to follow and watch PBS and NPR. They seem to be the last news source that we can trust.

As we begin this new year, think of ways you can push back. Women hold the power of the purse and make 75% of all retail purchases. It’s been one year since I bought from Amazon, Target or Walmart and I don’t miss them. You don’t need to be perfect, but try to spend less at places that are supporting this regime and use small businesses when you can. Participate in a protest. I did four this year and I hope to do more in 2026. It is a hopeful feeling seeing so many others who care as much as you do about this country.

I am inspired by two good people who we lost in 2025 and who cared so much about this world- Jane Goodall and Rob Reiner. They both showed you can do great things and also speak up for what’s going on in the world at the same time.

Tiny Pricks Project

How are you all feeling after living through 2025? Are you as hopeful as I am about 2026? Next week a few of my goals for the year and other good ideas!

If you missed the last post, I shared about embracing a simpler holiday time, Christmas decor ideas, the new COS at Valley Fair and more.

I have to thank to you all for this community. Your thoughts and messages are the best.

Here’s to a better year. May 2026 be better than we expect!

Hugs to you all,

Kim

Thank you for your heartfelt comments on the year and what is happening to our country. Using your voice requires courage. People will say they do not come here for that. And you do provide so much more. But the people that protest maybe need to have their eyes opened. We are in a crisis, but some cannot see it.

What a lovely post from you today. I think 2025 left many of us feeling like you. I know myself included. Christmas was very similar to yours. I just felt the need to keep things simple in the midst of all this chaos surrounding us. I am not going to be quite about the sickness in Washington, and will use any platform I can (league of women voters, protests, etc.) to voice our disgust. It is easy to get caught up in the disparity of things , but then remember great people who have made a difference. With all of us working together, we become a powerful force. Happy New Year to you Kim! Robin.

Happy New Year! Your Christmas sounds very nice. Over the past couple of years I have found less to be more as far as calm and enjoying the decorating I have put up. Each item seems special when there isn’t so much.
Like you I am optimistic about 2026 due to the midterms. The current administration ignores the constitution and the law so midterms appear to be the only solution.
Always look forward to your posts on Saturday morning.

    Kim,
Once again, I thank you for your bold, candid (and sadly accurate) statements about the state of our “government.” It’s so reassuring to come to your blog and read your comments as well as those from your like-minded readers.
I recently came across the term “patrimonialism” in February 2025 article in The Atlantic that I found to be a fascinating and shockingly spot on description of our situation. Our beautiful democracy is not now an autocracy (which would have SOME bureaucracy and norms, even if corrupt, etc.); it is a patrimonialist state in which the leader treats it as a family business and extension of his family–precisely what we see happening here and with Putin, Orban, and others. This was a completely new term and concept to me, and I thought you might find it interesting. I hope this link will take you to the article if you want to read it, https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/02/corruption-trump-administration/681794/ (“One Word Describes Trump,” by Jonathan Rauch)
With appreciation and hopeful wishes for our mutual future…

Hi Carolyn, Thank you for your note.
Patrimonialism is new to me, but sure does fit doesn’t it? We aren’t talking nearly enough about how much that man is making for himself and his family!
Why is Jared Kuschner, not nominated for anything making trips overseas to make deals for us? It is all about personal grift.
Great article. Thank you so much. Wishing you a good 2026 too. xo

    Hi Kim,
Nice to see a post from you this morning! Sounds like you had a nice Christmas and New Year’s. Not to be a Debbie Downer but ours kinda sucked. I think my husband and I had the “Super Flu”…he came down with it two days before his Christmas break and I got it the following Monday. Since we were having Christmas brunch for my daughter and her family I had to power through. In hindsight we should have rescheduled but I had rested the couple days before that and modified the menu so it was less prep for me. Then I hurt my back coughing and after a week of hell (muscle spasms!) am finally starting to recover. Hoping to be on the mend soon, but man I am BORED.
I’ve watched Georgia Tapert’s tour a couple times, first on Schumacher 1889 and then was excited to see Homeworthy’s longer version. Watching Homeworthy Christmas tours got me more motivated and inspired because I wasn’t as into the holidays this year. I decorated mostly for the grandkids, although once everything is up I do enjoy it and my husband does too.
The bar fire in Switzerland is so tragic and preventable. So many young lives and some so badly injured. It reminded me of the Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island so very similar. How scary that Griffin was somewhat close by!
The mid-terms can’t get here fast enough, although I have a feeling Trump will attempt to do as much destruction as he can in the next 10 months. I do need to attend a protest or two soon. My neighbors still attend weekly ones (at different locations, different days) and that group has grown over the last year. For a few of my retired neighbors it’s become almost a full time job. They say they never imagined this is what they would be doing in retirement!
    Enjoy the weekend Kim!
    Linda

Linda, I am so sorry! I know so many people had the dreaded flu this year.
Holy cow you sound like you did a lot. I hope you are resting now and taking care.
I also love the Homeworthy tours for motivation! I bet the grandkids appreciate your decorations. I loved my grandmothers when I was a girl.
Oh the fires are so scary. I hope things will change after that and people will be safer.
You’re so right the retired people are upholding a lot of democracy with their advocacy now. I’m so grateful to them all!
Hugs to you and be well. x

So glad to see you back in my inbox. Great start to the New Year! I am very happy that the Rotunda Room is still going strong at the lovely Neimans. The nicest store I shopped during the holidays was the Neimans at La Cantera in San Antonio. The clerks were so nice and helpful. One even thanked me for getting out in the rain to shop with them. I will give The Hardacres a look and also the book by Patrick Bringley. Thank you so much for the recs. I agree totally with your assessment of Trump. Unbelievably bad. I wake up afraid for our country. A quote I’ll share about the New Year –“We’re on ice, the pavement dangerous and slippery. But we don’t face the elements alone.”
p.s. I will enjoy watching the home tour.

Hi Kim, Happy New Year and thanks for telling us about your Christmas holidays! We also keep everything up until 6 January. This year it was just my husband and me, since both our boys were elsewhere, but it was nice – we didn’t do a turkey, just had ‘picky plates’ all day!
I’m glad that Griffin had fun in Berlin, one of my favourite cities. The fire in Switzerland is a real tragedy, and it sounds like it could definitely have been avoided.
I guess by now you are aware of what’s happening in Venezuela – Heather Cox Richardson did a video this morning looking at the wider implications for the world, it’s a half hour long and very good. And a friend in Australia introduced me to the Instagram account of a Canadian teacher who is quite amazing at what she does. Here’s something she put out in mid-December (there’s a second part as well) which in a short time goes quite deep into the situation. https://www.instagram.com/p/DSa76SODUie/
Also, a friend of ours here in Canada blew my mind when she said this morning that Trump saw that Zelensky paused elections in Ukaine when the war started, and this could be another motivation for Trump. (Not to mention the Epstein Files, and Jack Smith’s appearance in Congress!) So I guess I’ll hold my judgement on how I feel about 2026!

Thank you about Heather and the link.

Thank you Kim for an uplifting Christmas holiday spirit at a simpler and slower pace. We also did much the same in our home and thoroughly enjoyed the casual and impromptu get togethers whether it be just meeting for coffee or viewing a heartwarming movie with friends. We are trying to enjoy quality time with friends and family instead of booking every day with an event of some kind.
As we look at our divided country and the horrifying monumental issues we are facing, we realize that we can make a difference for a better outcome. Perseverance and commitment go a long way and we need to be intentional in having our voices heard.
Thank you for your wise words, compassion and loving spirit. I thoroughly enjoy your posts and also the readers who reply. I have learned so much and appreciate the time devoted to share concerns and the hope that energizes me to attend protests and be a voice to stop this madness.
In closing, I wish all of you a New Year filled with Love, Peace, Change, and Fun and Meaningful Adventures.

On a lighter note, your holidays sounded calm & quite lovely. I go back to work on Monday & my son flies back to CA next weekend after being home for his winter break for several weeks. Happy New Year, Kim! Your holidays sound wonderfully low key and cozy. I love your pink tree, and also adore a tree in the front window. What a darling little piggie ornament. Your cheese tree appetizer is so pretty and I know it was delicious … no wonder it was a hit. I didn’t get to San Francisco this season. My mouth is watering looking at those Neiman’s popovers … yum. That Rails sweater is perfect … and the PB pillows are so you. As always I appreciate you speaking out on the horrific state of our country is embroiled in. This mornings news came as another shock, although I’m not sure why it should … it’s one thing after another. It’s no wonder more people feel like turning off the outside world and curling up at home in hopes of finding peace and solace. Or is that just me? Hi Kim,
Happy New Year! So nice to have you back and hear about your holiday happenings. I’m glad you slowed down and kept it simple this year…sounds like you had the perfect mix of family and a little fun.
We did too, it’s just three of us, with our adult son….less decorating, and just a few gifts. We enjoyed bundling up (cold morning!) and participating in a 5K, a local fundraiser for Toys For Tots and treated a struggling family we know, to a home cooked meal for Christmas. I also made a lasagna, with Cesar salad, garlic bread and chocolate brownies for them. We like to help a less fortunate family during the holidays, which always lifts our spirits.
I appreciate your efforts to keep us informed and support your views on the ills of our country…..and being hopeful about change in 2026. 💗

Cheryl, Happy New Year. Yay for you having a smaller holiday too. It feels good.
How cool you did the 5K -and the helping a family with a meal. I think that is such a kind idea.
Your dinner sounds so good. Aw thank you so much. Let’s hope things can improve! xo

How lucky are you Kim, having a Brit in the family, especially at Christmas time with yummy mince pies and plum pudding? Don’t get too invested in the Hardacres as it was not renewed for a second season, but just finished Pluribus, which was pretty good. Christmas was great here in Oz, but marred by the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. New Years Day, we held a barbie in our backyard and tried to keep talk about American politics to a minimum as my American brother in law’s defence of Trump sends my sister (naturalised American) into a state of apoplexy. Australia has its own idiot for a Prime Minister, so I can empathise with your distaste for your current government. Happy New Year.

Susan I do feel so lucky to have Kristin in our lives!
Darn I was loving the Hardacres. I will look for Pluribus.
I was thinking of you after I heard about that terrible attack. It was so sad.
Gosh family dynamics… we have the same issues. I didn’t know that about your PM too.
Sigh. Men in charge now. Heroes are far and few.
      Happy New Year. xo

    Hi Kim,
I’ve been feeling the “time thief breathing down my neck. Hence my kind of late response.,
The personalized boat tote and scarf that Juliet
    gave you was so thoughtful.
The Christmas lasagna and salad looked yummy.
Your dad’s cinnamon rolls that he and Jackson made looked very good too. Kristin mince pies is a recipe I would like to see if she shares. Bear is a Brit and he used to get them.
Your pink tree was perfect where it was. See the little one just laying so innocently under the tree. Our kitties used to do that too.
Your adorable tree cheese appetizer looked perfect, I’m sure it was very good.
Neiman Marcus is such a great store. Good to see The Rotunda is still in business. I used to have the NM popover recipe. They aren’t easy to make, you have to serve them right away.
    Beautiful pillows from Pottery Barn.
I read about and heard The Beauty In The World The Metropolitan Museum of Art And Me is a great book.
The kitties looking at the TV is the cutest. They both look like kitty boy pals.
I’m trying not to absorb too much of the Felon, it’s too upsetting. Our medical and everyone else’s will be increasing in a big way. They all get it, but do not give a flip. SAD! I feel for people that have very little and are already struggling to make ends meet. All of this will hurt our economy over all.
Happy healthy everything. I have to stay hopeful for 2026.

I didn’t know Bear is a Brit! Love that, and mince pies.
Good don’t focus on the felon. Enjoy January and Bear. Sending you big hugs.

Beautiful heartfelt post. Our Christmas felt more meaningful. Less stress. Less gifts. The time spent together was more important. 2 little grandsons 3 and 4 made for much laughter. Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room! A lot of bloggers don’t so I unfollow them and look for my people to support. The silence is complicit! 2025 what a shame our country has devolved so much but I remain hopeful that 2026 will be better. So far not the case but we must speak out and fight for our democracy. Looking forward to hearing and seeing your thoughts and posts. Happy New Year Kim ❤️

Kim! Happy 2026! I think it will be another challenging year, but I hope it can be filled with health, hope and good memories on the home front. Our holiday season was also simpler and smaller. I loved it. The magical thing was how I stepped back so much this year in many ways… at times it felt lonely or quiet or maybe a bit boring… but the things and people that have come forward or made themselves known in that time have been worth it and that became especially obvious this holiday season. I can’t make sense of where we are headed in this cou try and globally so I will continue to help in my community and focus on my family this year. I struggle with alot of existential dread and uncertainty and these times are feeding it for sure, but I will try and keep spirits high. I like your fringe and new year tiara pic. I plan to greatly reduce extraneous spending in the year to come and to frequent more of the smaller shops around for gifts, etc… We have all we need here, but a little novelty is fun and I do like to update my wardrobe here and ther and you always have great style ideas to inspire! Take good care.

Good for you. All we can do now is focus on our communities and our loved ones in these times.
I hope you can find the joy in this year and don’t let it all get you down.

Summerland is cutest little town off California’s Summerland is cutest little town off California’s Highway 101. So many people have never been, including myself until last week when we stopped and I fell in love!

The number one place here is the famous @godmothersbooks which had been on my list, and is a gathering spot for the community, besides two levels of the best collection of books and a cute courtyard cafe.

Next door is the @summerlandbeachcafe
and three incredible home stores- @porch_summerland, @thewellsummerland, and @botanik_summerland Botanik. There is much more, but we had to get back on the road. I need to get back there and explore more.

Pop over to the blog and read more about this hidden gem of a town, that’s deserves a stop on your next California adventure.

Thirty years ago today Max and I were married! Tim Thirty years ago today Max and I were married! Time has seemed to fly. It doesn’t seem so long ago my friends Ani and Chris told me I had to meet this guy Max. Our first date was Mrs Doubtfire! We talked until 3 am! We were pretty inseparable after that, though we were pretty opposite.
I learned to scuba dive and backpack for him -and he learned to love (okay abide) museums and Jane Austen films!
We had so much fun raising our boys. He is the best person I know and I feel so lucky.

Today on the blog, I’m sharing the best summer sal Today on the blog, I’m sharing the best summer salad you will ever make. This is a longtime favorite from my friend Alex who is an incredible entertainer. She always makes everything California casual, and seemingly thrown together, but it tastes and looks fabulous! 😎

This salad uses the best of summer so make it soon!
The salad 🥗 is…
~Washed butter and a mix of greens (not bagged right now)
~Watermelon cubed
~Baby tomatoes halved
~3 ears of white corn (slice off uncooked and rinsed.)
~Red onion sliced
~Toasted pine nuts
~Feta cheese crumbled ( I substituted mozzarella here as my feta went bad.)
~Poppyseed dressing. Yes bottled. Sorry, but it is so good. I used Brianna’s as the original recipe calls for it.

Assemble and toss gently with the dressing. Top with pinenuts and blue corn chips crumbled are good too.

Alex’s salad is a great one to share at a gathering because it makes so much and can also be a terrific dinner with a protein added.

The full recipe on a card to save is on the blog, along with other delicious summer food ideas from five friends.
