On this post, our two days in Carmel at the Highlands Inn, a Carmel beach hike, and what I packed, and also a peek into Juliet’s lovely new home.
Hello lovely pals. Well here we are in fall already! How did that happen? I got away mid-week to Carmel which was cool and foggy. I also got a peek at Juliet’s new home and had lunch with her and Cindy in Lafayette. More
Juliet’s new home!
Thursday I drove up to Lafayette to see her new house that is nearly done. Cindy was up there too, so joined us for lunch in the charming town. I have never been to Lafayette, but it’s Juliet’s hometown and so pretty. I loved the oak trees everywhere and the winding downtown streets with many fun outdoor restaurants and shops. Lafayette is in the East Bay, and not far from where she was previously in Orinda.

I won’t share many pics because Juliet will want to be the one to reveal it all, but here are a few snaps. It’s lovely and as expected she has chosen some beautiful things in her new place. It’s a small home, but feels very open and big. I loved the style of her house.

Cindy and Juliet looked so cute. Always fun to see what they wear. Cindy and Juliet above with me posing in her beautiful main bath and below, Juliet in her new kitchen and her future Make Mine A Spritzer world headquarters! So many pretty details to come she hasn’t yet shared. Make sure you are following her blog!

Carmel’s Highlands Inn

Now that Max is retired, we can travel a bit during the week. The kids have been bugging us to use our travel points and get more savvy like that, so we’re trying. Apparently we had Hyatt points and didn’t know it, so a few months ago Max decided to book us two nights at the historic Highlands Inn in Carmel with them.
The Highlands Inn once had an elegant reputation and was a fancy Park Hyatt. I had been to a good friend’s wedding there and Max and I had gone once overnight about 25 years ago. It was a wonderful spot to stay for a weekend near Big Sur and Carmel. The lounge overlooking the ocean was a stunner. You could have a drink in the evening near a cracking fireplace while someone played American standards on a grand piano. There was a spotting scope to catch whales go by (blue whales can be seen here), and a lovely buzz with people from far and wide in the lounge.

Sadly today that is all missing. Now it is part Hyatt and part a vacation timeshare club. What stinks is this property sits on what is one of the most gorgeous sites in the world. Every room has a million-dollar view. The rooms though are in need of serious upgrade. They are dark, with Motel 6-level bathrooms, and decks that are coming apart and seem dangerous. The floors are crooked. Much to be upgraded here, but you are charged a premium still and rates run from the $500 to $1200 a night depending on the room.

The nice fireplaces that were previously gas or log burning are now replaced with a piece of paper that flickers like a fire with a loud electric heater behind it. It was hilariously bad. They do a tacky thing where you have to get your parking pass from the time share sales guy, so everyone has to listen to a sales pitch, even if you’re a fully paying customer.
We had dinner in the lounge one night and it was not great. The big lounge is all but abandoned with photos with a QR code next to them that you can scan and buy. Feels so crass. No rugs, no piano, no music, and few people.

Pros- The people here are nice. (Well except for the housekeeping person that asked us three times that morning when we would check out.) The Hyatt bed and bedding are great. I give the breakfast a thumbs up- very good with an unbeatable view. Max had granola pancakes and I had the yogurt and fruit. They have robes in the room and a decent heated pool. Valet parking is free and actually needed on this hilly property. (It’s a climb to get around and I would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues. Many stairs and wonky paths.)

The real bummer though is to see a big company let a landmark property fall apart. That maybe makes me more mad than anything. Our stay was fine, but In Max’s words, and he isn’t picky – ‘not a premium experience.’ So don’t spend your points here – or your dollars, but maybe stop for the breakfast with a view. Let’s hope this pretty property gets some love someday soon. Sadly I am not the only one, this hotel gets ranked number 31 of 32 hotels in Carmel on Tripadvisor. That would be unacceptable to a hotel chain that cares about this beautiful property.
If you’re looking for places to stay in Carmel, we always love Bernardus, just up the road in sunny Carmel Valley. More details in this post.
Friends have also stayed and like Carmel’s La Playa Hotel, and recently the new pretty Stillwell Hotel. Both are on my list!
Carmel River State Beach Trail
Tuesday was a foggy and cool day so we took a hike before a later lunch. This trail starts at Carmel River Beach one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere and goes south towards Monastery Beach, a famous scuba diving spot.

You can start at the parking lot and check out the lagoon and wetland like Max did for turtles and birds. From there head south and take the upper trail along the homes facing the beach. Stay away from Monastery- the farther beach which has an extremely steep drop-off and powerful rip currents. People often cannot get back out even after dipping feet in, so maybe watch it from afar.

From the trail you can see the homes and the mountains, and the mission. At one point you will get to a long staircase and you can take it up to the neighborhood and wind back around to the river beach.

There are some nice homes to walk past and on the end of that path is a cross, a marker from the Portola Crespi expedition.

Of course many dogs here in Carmel!

On the way down a group of plein air painters were working on the mountains that were in the distance.

Carmel River Beach is gorgeous any time of year.

Point Lobos state park is very close to here and a stunning place to hike. If you haven’t been, you might like this post.
Pebble Beach Lunch
After our walk we decided to drive over to Pebble Beach and have lunch at the more casual spot there, The Bench. It has a view of the golf course and the ocean and good food. It also has a fun patio, but we sat inside and the views were still stunning. Many come here after a round of golf. One woman had her book and a lunch out on the patio by the firepits and it looked like a nice way to spend a cool day in Carmel. Food here is delicious. No notes. Great people watching. Some shops to peruse here too.

There is also a fancier restaurant- Stillwater, and the Tap Room here at the resort. For even more casual food, by the visitor center there is a market to grab sandwiches and Adirondack chairs and tables.

What I wore for two fall days in Carmel
Cindy and I did a post on fall clothes that I spent a lot of time on this week, so I was ready for cozy clothes. I wore a few fall things in Carmel finally like a great pair of driving mocs and this grey sweater. Rails sent it to me a while back and I was excited it was cool enough to spend the day in it. I forgot to take a photo with it on! It’s a beautiful sweater, cozy and slightly oversized.

bag/glasses/sweater/jeans(similar)
My Sezane Gary bag (linked above) was the perfect size for bopping around Carmel and out in the evening. I brought white (similar) jeans and blue jeans, both white and black Athleta tanks, and this Rowan fleece jacket (gifted to me) – perfect for Carmel and this scarf.

My tan shirt with white collar and cuffs by Rachelle Behrens is one I shared earlier this year. I think it’s the best shirt ever with two hidden buttons so your shirt never puckers. They have so many cute variations of this shorter button up which is good for 5’4 people like me. The weather made my hair crazy and I had an eye issue and wore no makeup, so not so glam, but fun!

Why you should consider a pair of driving mocs
After walking all over Carmel in a super comfy driving moccasin (size 10 left), that J.Crew sold in spring, I thought I need more of these. The moccasin look in suede is a fall classic, and when they have the driving sole on them, even better. If you don’t have a pair of driving mocs, maybe think about adding them to your fall mix. They have that instant autumn vibe and are very Carmel! I saw a few others wearing them. Below a few good ones…
Other cool things
Have you read Swan Song, Diana My Sister by Charles Spencer? It is on my next up list and this review chat about it here made me more intrigued. In the book he reveals more about her early years we don’t know about. I have read a few of Charles’ books and appreciate his voice and his viewpoint. So much of what happened is now conveniently swept under the rug.

Frances Valentine founders Elyse Aarons and Kate Spade loved Mary Tyler Moore. Now Elyse has created Frances Valentine x Mary Tyler Moore collection inspired by Mary and her looks on the show. The great thing is this collection supports the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative’s fight to end diabetic retinal disease, something Mary lived with. The collection drops 9/29, but you can preview it here and sign up to be notified !

I adore the coastal home of decorative shell artist Mel Campion in Wales! The dark lavender sectional, the soft creme walls, and other pretty details give me many ideas.
Cindy and I put out our Fall Wish Lists Signature Style posts and you can find mine here and Cindy’s here. Both of us found a lot of good pieces a to consider for your fall closet like these easy and chic pinstripe pull on pants.

By the way, Cindy is the muse for Mersea and their fall campaign. Cindy was photographed at her California home for the brand and you can find Cindy’s collection picks here! I’m ecstatic for her. She looks gorgeous and deserves it. She works so hard!

No Kings
No Kings is a nationwide rally to get out the vote—and vote early before the mid-term elections. There will be events with places to register and also stand in support of change at the top. We need politicians not beholden to special interests, billionaires, and deep in corruption for themselves and their family. Trump is all of these things, and is so much worse this time around.
Speaking of Trump, (not a cool thing) he is using public dollars to pay for a television ad that features him urging Americans to “defeat communism,” and it also is a campaign ad for his record and what he’s done. Lots of propaganda paid for by us. How is everyone in this country not in the streets??
One thing we must work on is turnout. An estimated 89 million Americans, or about 36% of the country’s voting-eligible population, did not vote in 2024. That’s unacceptable and we have to motivate people and make it easier to vote, not harder.
Find your event for No Kings here and local events here. You can also send postcards. This week I am sending postcards for Signs of Justice. You address them and stamp them yourself, and write your own note to people who skipped the last election, but who usually vote.

If you missed last week, I shared my new dining cabinet, green fashion, and a Santana Row lunch program that helps World Central Kitchen
Have a lovely weekend,
Kim

Sounds like that hotel needs a major influx of cash! Breathtaking views though. Thanks for taking us along.
Mary Ann, Sadly so many of these corporate mergers want to suck the money out of properties. Not sure what is up with Hyatt.
What a fun filled post, kim—Always envious of your trips along the California coast! Love your style— Always the perfect looks! How fun to meet Cindy to see Juliet’s beautiful new house!!
Annie, We are so lucky to have so many incredible spots here.
I wish you were there for lunch with us too.
Maybe soon we’ll be visiting your NYC home!
Kim, we stayed there 7,or 8 years ago, also with points. It sounds like it has gone downhill since. There was still a guy on a piano in the lobby and the room was more like a time share apartment than a room. But the views are stunning.
Gray so funny you used points too. I imagine a lot of us are.
Yes I wish our room was that nice. The views cannot be beat, but you have to worry if your balcony will fail. Ours was coming apart in two places.
Sad and I hope it gets some love soon.
Kim! Omg, the Highlands Inn sounds like a disaster! It’s been about 25 years since we last stayed there. Hyatt needs to get there act together. Sounds like they are just managers of the place now. Glad to hear your honest update. You look so cute and stylish in all the pics. Love the driving Mocs and need to get a pair. How cool that you and Cindy to could meet up with Juliet! Lafayette has always been a charming little town. Enjoy your weekend. Xx
Karen sad isn’t it? Hyatt is or was such a great brand. What the heck happened?
Aw thank you. I love the mocs!
I need to get back to Lafayette and see more.
Happy weekend! xo
Like the others, I’m sad to learn of the demise of the Highlands Inn. I used to go to wine events there and arranged for a well-known former chef, Cal Stamenov, to put on a cooking class for a group of women. I also had a woman who had written a book about how to pack come do a demo for the same group. Kim, I recognize my prize (scarf) in some of the pictures. I’ve been using it tied on a purse because it’s been too hot to actually wear so far. I have always loved Carmel, been going there since a small child.
The Highlands Inn has a special place in our family story. I have a picture of my parents sitting on the porch sipping martinis soon after they were married. My father proposed at Point Lobos just below the Inn. Sorry to hear it is in such poor shape. We like the Tickle Pink next door. Very romantic and a little nostalgic. Carmel is such a special place.
I would like to try the Tickle Pink Inn (or for nostalgia, the Cypress Inn, to see the many pooch guests).
Joan the Tickled Pink is still operating next door. I adore the Cypress Inn and have been for lunch many times on the patio and in the bar. Haven’t yet stayed the night, but great for dog people. x
I live in central California but travel and spend time in many of the areas you go to. I truly appreciate the suggestions you share of where to stay, eat and visit. It’s always fun to discover something new!
Thanks so much! I’m so glad you found the blog! I love Central Cal too. x
Except for the mandatory time share spiel, I’d happily stay at The Highlands — with its view, a good bed and breakfast and nice staff (not expecting luxe). But time share ‘talks’ are intolerable (STILL remember the pain of the only one we attended 30 years ago). I visited Carmel’s The Stillwater a year ago as a treat for a younger friend and I and it was serene and well-located with an elegant breakfast buffet in their courtyard (no view, as it’s in town). You look great in the cropped Oxford and striped lightweight pants! I booked a trip to see family in Italy and take a cruise in a month, dumbly overlooking Halloween, and MORE importantly, Election Day, so we will go into our County office on 10.14 to vote in person! We marched in the last No Kings event, and the best part was making our personal signs with a “heartfelt” message of our choosing 😉
Joan I hope I don’t sound ungrateful to stay there, but for the nightly room charge cost, they need to fix the place up. Yes you can’t beat the views. The timeshare thing is unacceptable.
Stillwater looks wonderful too. Next on my list!
Aw thanks I love that shirt and the pants. Wow how fun to be in Italy for a cruise. I think that is a great time to travel. We did it two years ago end of October in the UK. Yay for doing the vote early and in person!
I’m already working on my signs for No Kings!
Love to hear more about your trip.xo
Hah — I wasn’t considering VALUE of the stay at the Highlands (ie, cost/benefit ratio)! I remember your UK trip well, as it sounded fantastic. I realized that I’d visited a couple of your destinations ~15 years ago during one of my prof husband’s sabbatical trips (York & Chatsworth House in Derbyshire with its amazing grounds).
Yes! You have to spend premium points too! Not worth it.
You visited York and Chatsworth? Aren’t they amazing? I want to go back. Maybe two of my favorite things ever. x
A dishwasher just for her shells — I may need to work that into a future novel character!
What are your thoughts on driving Mocs + socks? I’m in Portland Oregon and this is the time of year when my feet start getting cold… Believe it or not, chilblains are still a thing — I thought that was only in books by Chaucer in the 1300s, until my derm told me that’s what was happening to my chilly toes.
Anywho, I’m considering my options for fall footwear that allow for socks. Send help!
Christine I know!!
Socks plus mocs and loafers are the thing now. I’ve seen so many posts about cute socks to pair them with, so I think yes!
Gee you got to protect your feet. I saw some very cute ankle socks at the Bombas store in many styles…

Keep those toes warm! xo
How sad that Hyatt let the iconic Highlands Inn go to waste. The views and the history are incomparable.
There are so many quaint little places in Carmel by the Sea to enjoy – we honeymooned at La Playa and loved it.
Our love for Carmel and Monterey brought us to Monterey permanently. Moving at 70 years old (my husband is 74) was no easy task, especially from our dream home in SLO, but we absolutely love the Monterey peninsula.
Thanks for sharing your adventures…. they are all so fun to be a part of.
AND EVERYONE, VOTE!!!!!
Dianne I know! It is a sad thing to see with such a gorgeous property.
I still want to stay at la Playa someday.
Wow congrats on moving to lovely Monterey!
Yes we need every vote. xo
Kim It is sad that the Hyatt ruined a former lovely place..the timeshare craze or boom is past! in many properties. They languish and are dull shells of their former selves. I do not own a timeshare but a relative does and I see the neglect and reduction in appearance and ambiance. The company turns a property into a cookie cutter version of every other timeshare and then lets it go downhill. There are a few exceptions but cost the timeshare owners dearly. Things are patched up and are frozen in the era when bought such as the 60s and 70s. On another topic, I love the clothing you have picked to show us! I am formulating a short list of things to replace in my closet.
Donnie it hurts to see what they let happen there.
Yes so true about timeshares.
Good job making your list. I love starting that way. xx
Hi Kim,
Thank you for all the places to go around Carmel. We tend to stay in Big Sur and visit Carmel for the day, but one day I am going to really explore the natural world around it and get to know it much better. Yes I am looking forward to voting…how about Susan Collins and corruption charges?? It is all so despicable. Fabulous about Cindy and Mersea she looks so good!! And Juliet’s house so beautiful Happy weekend xo
Hi Francesca!
I want to stay in Big Sur one day! So much beauty along that whole coast .
That Susan Collins is something. How does she still hold office? I really hope she loses.
xo
Kim I bought Swan Song! Cannot wait to read it. Piers Morgan is not at all happy about the book. I for one, am very thankful for Charles Spencer I remember his eulogy….
Francesca I am a fan too. He’s a straight up guy. They hate that. Piers Morgan not liking it says everything. He’s horrendous.
Charles is a royal too and has money, so I feel like he wanted to get this out to tell her story. x
@Kim. Charles Spencer is not a Royal, but the Spencer family are very much the aristocrats. The spat between Piers Morgan and Charles Spencer is over some inaccuracies in the book, for which Spencer has apologised. As for the book, I think Charles Spencer should have heeded the old adage, ‘people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones’.
Shame about the Hyatt, one would expect a much higher standard. They are now adding a ‘discretionary’ 5% tip of your hotel bill automatically when you check out.
Susan I know sad about the Hyatt – and the 5%!
Okay well I know less than others being an American, but I know I don’t like Piers.
xo
Kim,
Your blog about your Carmel trip is very timely for me as my husband and I are doing a quick getaway this week to Monterey and Carmel. Now that I’ve read your blog, I think we might try lunch at The Bench as my husband is a golfer and will enjoy a visit to Pebble Beach. I can’t believe it, but I think it’s been almost 25 years since our last visit. It’s so sad that the Highlands Inn has not been kept up as it should. I was there once long ago for dinner and it was quite breathtaking. I always love walking around in Carmel. This trip we’re going to also visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium since it’s been even longer since either of us have been there. I’ve been thinking about what to wear, so enjoyed seeing your outfits. I’m hoping it’s a little cool since it’s still been so hot where I live outside of Sac. I’m so looking forward to sweater weather!
Wendy I hope the getaway was great and this was helpful. The Bench is always a winner. Yes sad about the Hyatt!!
Good for you doing the aquarium and all. So much to do and if you haven’t been for years do it all again !
I know sweater weather !! xo
Hi Kim,
Oh what a shame the property is not in good shape. The views were breathtaking, made me homesick again.
Wonderful you and Cindy went to see Juliet. How special was that. Juliet is amazing on so many levels. Fabulous taste, love her cottage. Warm and inviting.
Katherine it was so lovely to be in person with them! Wish you could have been there too.x
Kim! It was so much fun showing you and Cindy around the new house and I appreciate your kind words. As you know this has been a challenging process and it’s exciting to be nearing the end. Lunch was great too … what a shame it was so hot. Things cooled off the next day and the past two mornings have been downright chilly. So disappointed to hear your review of the Highlands Inn, once the peak of chic in Carmel. I guess Hyatt intends to rely on its fabulous location … and the views. I love everything you wore … you always get it right. Speaking of clothes, the MTM collab … so cool. And, you won’t believe this, but I sold my two pair of Todd’s driving loafers at The Real Real last year. Oof. Oh, to have them back. On the more distressing subject of our current President, did you see him swaning into the college football game today with his security detail messing with the team’s communications. I’m sure they appreciated that. I hear he’s jetting off – on our dime – to another sporting even tomorrow. What’s the deal with that? Of course he leaves before the game is over , not interested at all … just show up, make it difficult for fans to get into the stadiums and mess with their communications, then leave before half-time. Jim says his streak continues and the home team lost. Jeez. I can’t wait for the election so we can curb his out of control authoritarianism and start inching our way back to some semblance of democracy. It’s going to be a long row to hoe, but the sooner we get started the better. My how I do run on. Anyhoo. Great post as always. xoxo
Juliet seeing you ladies was so fun. I adore your charming town and you’re doing such a great job on your home. It’s the details that I adore too.
I didn’t know about the football game. Infuriating he uses so much of our tax dollars to go wherever he pleases and whenever – and make people lose.
Can’t someone throw a tomato or a shoe at the man? I mean just for a small win? I hope someone is adding up all the money and corruption spent and I hope we can get it out of him later if we are still a nation.
Yes we have So much work to do once we get back in. xo
Kim, enjoyed this post so much. I haven’t been to Highlands Inn but sad it’s reputation and standard has tine to pots. I certainly will try the The Bench, sounds like a must. You and your husband always take awesome trips and nice to read about them. Great clothes choices as usual. I particularly like the grey pin stripe slacks. I’m anxious to see Juliet’s new home. Thanks for the reminder about No King Protests coming up and totally agree we should be protesting now…
Have a good week. We need to Vote Blue!
Hi Sheila! Yes real bummer about the Inn!
The Bench is a great idea.
Thank you about the clothes. Love the pinstripe slacks too!
Yes vote blue!! x
Thank Kim for letting me know about Carmel Highland Inn, I stayed there 20+ years ago. I was thinking about going back to stay there sometimes. But if the hotel’s quality is downhill and super expensive, maybe not.
I love your blog and post. I love to read it every week to see what fashion is in season and also like to see places that you travel and “where” to eat. Thanks.
Hi Dominica, Yes sadly the quality is not there for the cost. You will get some amazing views, but that is about it. Try Ventana Inn maybe down in Big Sur or one of the in town hotels.
Aw thank you for the kind note and for being here! xo
Hi Kim, I’ve heard a lot about Carmel and it sounds like an absolutely lovely place – shame about the hotel, especially since you and Max have such wonderful memories of how it used to be.
A Scottish vlogger that I follow is on honeymoon in northern California right now and is having an amazing time – she has put out some shorts, and maybe she’ll do a full vlog when she gets back. I know that they went to Carmel. She is from my hometown, and her sister also does vlogs, but from Edinburgh – they are Jess Harris and Jen Harris if you are interested in checking them out.
I’m in no way a fan of Piers Morgan, but the thing in the book that he was mad about is something that should never have slipped through, and Spencer was right to apologise. However, I do agree with the comment above about people in glass houses …!
Hi Patricia!Yes too bad about the hotel. I hope you can get to Carmel one day.
Don’t you love travel vlogs? Some people are so talented at making them. I am going to check these sisters out now. Thank you SO much! I bet they see things in Carmel that we miss.
Seems like the people of the UK are against Charles and I know less than you all. I follow him on Instagram and he always seems like such a good caring brother to me and a nice guy. I read his book about boarding school, so I know he is about calling out some of these systems. I will read with caution. xo
Kim, as always a lovely travel post but so sorry your hotel was not up to a good standard. Unsafe balconies are not a good look for such a famous hotel brand! Love all your outfits but especially the recommendation for a shorter shirt. As a 5ft 1in lady myself I always appreciate pointers for us slightly more vertically challenged people!
I have mixed feelings about Charles Spencer. He once said he couldn’t imagine how anyone could make money out of a dead relative’s story but here he is doing exactly that. I wonder if him and Harry have a close relationship as they do seem to share similar attitudes. But mostly I just wish Diana’s memory could be left in peace.
xx
Hi Lesley! I know it was shocking about the hotel.
It truly is hard to find the right balance being more petite right? I feel like so many clothes are made for those who are 5’7!! More of us are below 5’4 and I wish the world would realize that.
Ugh gosh feeling are mixed on Charles aren’t they? I want to think he’s trying to get her story out, but you might be right too.
xo
Hi, I’m so glad you guys got to go see Juliette’s place. It looks wonderful. I know she’s so excited to get moved in and we are all so excited to wait and see the pictures when she does. !! we stayed at the Highlands Inn gosh 30 years ago, so it’s sad. It’s gone downhill so badly. Even though you say your hair looks bad. I think you still look cute. I loved all your outfits.! isn’t it crazy how much cooler it is when you get down to Carmel versus being back in Los Gatos and the valley?
I too, wanna read Spencer‘s book about Diana. It’s on my list.
Glad to see you had a great weekend in Carmel.
Martha, It was lovely! I am excited to see your place too.
Yup sadly they let this beautiful property fall apart. It’s like putting bandaids on instead of caring for it.
Aw thanks so much martha. hope you had a great week x
It is very rare that you use that kind of language in your descriptions, so I can only imagine your disappointment, especially at those price points. I totally agree with your comments on using taxpayer funds under the guise of a “public service announcement” when it is so clearly evident that this is a partisan ad. There will be a reckoning for Trump as the truth always makes itself known.
I know. I hate to bash on anything. My hope is they will take care of this beautiful property and not treat it like a cheap motel. Clearly they are extracting money instead of investing it in this property. I hate to see it.
Yes the ad should be rejected by the networks. People need to rise up and call this out.
I hope he has to pay back every damn penny one day. x
I’m embarrassing Kate to the comments. We got engaged in the beach in Carmel then went straight to the Highlands Inn to celebrate with champagne. So this is sad to read. We were married one year later at La Playa Hotel which was lovely and still is even after a big revamp.
Karen really sad about the Inn! I love that you got engaged in Carmel. SO romantic.
La Playa has done a great job and revamped. Looks lovely. x
