Neutral Christmas Decor, Santana Row at the Holidays, Vintage Pins, Easy Christmas Cookies, and More

December 9, 2022 By kimwheeler 21 Comments

On this Weekend Meanderings my neutral Christmas Decor, holiday nights at Santana Row, vintage holiday pins, cute runners and napkins, an easy Christmas cookie to make and more…

Santana Row for Holiday Fun

Santana Row has been really making an effort to have fun things at the holidays and I wanted to share. This week my friend E organized us to have dinner and do their Wednesday night ‘Sip and Stroll’ where you can get drinks, walk about and see the lights and festivities. Wednesdays they have snow machines and on Tuesday nights wonderful live performances and coming the weekend of the 18th, a holiday craft fair.

We sat under the heat lamps at Left Bank and had a lively dinner and took a photo after by the big tree. It was a great way to be with friends during this holidays with low effort. Elaine and Bari are long time friends through tennis and we are lucky our husbands get on too. If you want to dress up a little and get that holiday feeling on, this is the spot! More here about all the happenings.

My friend E has a beautiful collection of vintage pins and wore one that night which brings me to this…

#Blingit

After writing this week’s Signature Style about festive outfits, I was inspired to share more of my own mom’s and grandma’s vintage pins and jewels that I have inherited and mostly sit in the drawer. I love wearing this pin of my grandma’s and the bells that my mom always had on her coat at Christmas!

I know a lot of you also have some festive holiday pins and jewelry you may only wear at a party or for the holidays. We need to get theses small treasures out all the days of December! Even wear them with a t-shirt and jeans- they look cool!

Juliet and I thought it would be fun to have a hashtag #BLINGIT on Instagram so people can share their treasures. All month, tag us with your sparkly bits and we will share them on our Stories! If you don’t Instagram, just email me and I’ll share here. Kim@northerncalstyle.com.

Also some of you have no vintage jewelry and that’s okay.. It’s fun to look for it online and at places like Goodwill and local charity shops. Online, EBay is a good source and WEISS is an American brand that made gorgeous pins and you can source beauties for good prices here.

Cute table runners and napkins

I love this runner I found at Nordstrom in Hillsdale while visiting my son last week. Very nice quality and I thought this green could work after the holidays too.

The whole line, called Heirloomed, is adorable and you can find it here.

They also had these cute cloth napkins 4 for $20 …

I filled my big wooden bowl (similar here) with some light green and pink bulbs and a few cuttings of greenery. It has been so dark lately, it’s hard to get a good photo.

I’m loving muted tones and that sort of works with the new white tree.

Last year’s look.. I had a brighter runner and added red ornaments. Also we had sunshine. It’s been pretty gloomy this month.

I’m really going slow on the whole decorating thing. Juliet and I talked about having to be in the mood to decorate on our LIVE this past Thursday on Instagram. Anyone else feel the same? We also talked about how important it is to say no to things this time of year. You don’t have to do everything you think you do, and cards and excess gifts are some of the things you may need to cut out to find more joy.. As women we put way too much on ourselves. We often do it to ourselves. Lower expectations =happier life!

Thanks to everyone who caught the chat. It was great to connect with you all. You can still watch it on Instagram here and we will do one next week before we take a little break for the holidays.

I found the gingham ribbon at Michaels this week. Michaels was CLEANED OUT of everything – and I consider this earlyish. Am I wrong? My sons will add their ornaments, each have their own boxes, when they come home.

I am not good with ribbon like some.. I kind of just jam it in there…

We did get the stockings up with command hooks and faux garland bought at the local home store Harvest. I have to remove it when the fire is on. This is the one time I miss having a mantel…Of courses Marlo has her own stocking!

Christmas Dream Drops

It’s going to be a stormy weekend here in Northern Cal, so I’m planning on doing my baking. This is one of the cookies I’m making and it’s fast, pretty and delicious. It was Sunset Magazine’s best cookie for 2011. I adapt it to remove the white chocolate chips which were unnecessary and weighed these down. This is like a mini pavlova so you want to make sure not to over bake these. They should have some give and be crisp on the outside and have chewy goodness inside that a hard meringue does not.

My dream drops at in the old kitchen, and far right photo from the original issue of Sunset. The online recipe has a new pic of them dipped in chocolate on the bottom. Recipe here.

FYI- these are a two day cookie max, so make these right before you want to share or eat them! I found the chopped up peppermint at World Market in the baking area.

I also spied at World Market and here, the vintage Betty Crocker ‘Cooky Book’ that holds all the treasured recipes our mom’s made. If you don’t have one, this spans cookies of the 20th century, trends and even world events and is chock full of good recipes and fun reading and awesome retro photos. I will never part with my mom’s edition, but may get another for the sons to each have. A cool gift idea!

Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach’s California home

Guys, the real estate market is slow now, so instead I’m sharing these new photos from Sunset of Abby and Glennon’s home that I love….

This house is my vibe, and is described as a modern Cape Cod style. I love the lightness and use of soft colors and fabrics and lots of texture. You can see more of the house here. Interior design by Kate Lester and photos by Douglas Friedman.

I want a pink rug for my bath! The bookshelves are so cool..

You can follow their designer Kate on her Instagram, which I am obsessed with and she also has a home store in So Cal here. How lovely is her mantel for the holidays? Inspiring!

ALSO…

Serena & Lily has their Winter Clearance which is up to 70% off on some things and many favorites like the gingham pjs, velvet shams and Sonoma Bath towels are the lowest I’ve ever seen them. Sale ends 12/20 if need any beautiful home things.

I did update the men’s gift list from last week as my son and I had a great day shopping at Nordstrom and he showed me some more cool things so go here if you need gifts for guys.

Sorry if this post seems light, but I had two other posts this week.. One was Signature Style with Cindy and Sarah…about holiday dressing strategies, and on Thursday I joined Annie, Cindy, Mary Ann and Kelley in Balboa, to share our hometown holiday traditions. Mine is about my town of Los Gatos and our family December must-dos.

And that is my weekend meanderings for this week. Don’t forget to stop over at Elizabeth and Juliet’s blogs to see what good things they are talking about..

Have a lovely weekend!

Holiday Home Tour- Think Pink for Christmas

November 30, 2022 By kimwheeler 40 Comments

Welcome to the 2022 Holiday Home tour! I’m very excited to be part of Jenny Williamson’s Holiday Tour Week. Each day you’ll see festive rooms from different blogs to give you some ideas and inspiration. I’m sharing my pink Christmas tree that I put up in my den just for me!

If you came here from Postcards From the Ridge, welcome! I’m Kim and live in Northern California.

The list of blogs collaborating on this Christmas tour

I am neutral lover and my home is full of natural elements, lighter colors, and wood tones. I generally go the same way with our main tree and keep it natural and light.

Still, I have always thought pink Christmas trees were fun. One year, when I was small, my grandmother had one -and it was thrilling to me. Last year, when I took over the small space off the kitchen for my own personal den/office, I had a lightbulb moment thinking why not to get a small pink tree? I absolutely am so glad I did it. It was fun pulling it together and it gives me a little joy and I think of my grandma. She would have loved it.

Pink Christmas tree with mercury glass ornaments in a den.

As I am the only women in this family with three men, the main tree could never be all pink. I keep our family tree more traditional and natural, and will share that next week.

I found my pink tree at Homegoods last year. I found these pink mercury glass bulbs on a garland that are the perfect size when cut off the ribbon. The pink tweed ribbon I found last year on our annual Christmas trek to San Francisco at Neiman Marcus at surprisingly $27 for a huge spool. I also use a pink faux fur throw for the skirt, which sort of continues the glam fun feel of this tree.

The tree takes on a warmer pink, almost copper hue when lit that I love. I added this small oriental carpet pillow to my office chair that I had in the same tones.. I love this pink/sherbert orange mix.

Pink Christmas tree with mercury glass and warm pink accents.

Pink tree with silver stars

I had some Eiffel Tower ornaments that I added here and this star garland.

I also snuck in a little pink house from my dad’s vintage snow scene he had as a kid…

Since last year, I’ve noticed pink trees are becoming even more popular. There is a cute version here in two sizes, and here in many colors and options.

Other pretty pink Christmas items.. This wreath at Target.

pink mettalic wreath from Target
soft pink burlap ribbon

I could not find the original ribbon, but this light burlap pink at Joann’s is a soft color look for a tree ribbon and Neiman’s has a beautiful hot pink taffeta ribbon – 25 yards for $39, which isn’t bad for a luxe ribbon.

These bulbs are pretty with a crackle finish and this is a pretty collection. Both good deals.

an assortment of soft pink bulbs for the Christmas tree

I love this copper and pink wrap and this ribbon for presents from Anthropologie.

And if you’re a pink lover , and can’t have a tree…why not have a rose colored stocking?

pink and a res patchwork stocking
pink and red knit stocking
pink caravan stocking

This patchwork one is adorable as is this one, and this Anthro woven knit version, and this Grand Caravan stocking I love too.

And if you just want a pop of pink and some sass, this pillow from Furbish is a hoot. I might need this in my den or by the front door. This quip is from Home Alone, if you don’t remember..Ha. I think we need a rewatch of that this year..

What do you think about pink Christmas decor?

Please be sure and pop by the next room on the tour, Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick, who I think you will love!

Don’t forget to visit each of the homes on the tour each day…

Monday Notes

November 27, 2017 By kimwheeler 5 Comments

How was your weekend? We had the loveliest Thanksgiving though I have to say I love the days after a lot too. It feel like a big exhale after hosting and all and no I am not ready to do Christmas yet! There was a whole week almost until December this year after Thanksgiving and I am resisting the rush to get it all up and start the Christmas crazy train.

I like the holidays as much as anyone else, but I am taking this week to detox a bit. I feel like the past month has been a little harried and of course I’ve eaten whatever I wanted the past week. I think I’m going to try to eat really fresh this week, drink a lot of herbal teas and water, and take some long walks. I’d like to try to get a little centered and find some calm by purging the house a bit and making a some plans and lists for December before plunging in.

How do you all cope/plan for the holidays? Each year I say I’m going to do a little less, but make it more meaningful. Less stuff more experiences- you know?

Did any of you get to do some tv watching this long weekend? I finally got to finish The Durells in Corfu and it was fantastic. I don’t know what I would do without Masterpiece. I highly recommend that show about an expat Brit family and their life fitting into the Greek culture in the 1930s and their quirky kids. It’s based on a true story. My other favorite is Grantchester which I am behind on and I’m hoping to start Poldark…So many good shows and I can’t stay awake for them!

You may have noticed my blog has been redesigned. I finally decided to take the plunge and switch to WordPress too. So far it seems doable, but standby as I work out some kinks! I love the design by Little Blue Deer. Seems to fit the blog’s style perfectly.

Stay tuned..tomorrow is my post about the charming town of Ojai. My new favorite spot in California!

Christmas in Paris – Birthday Lunch at Leasa’s

December 24, 2013 By kimwheeler No Comments

My tennis friends have remained close and we use each other’s birthdays as an excuse to get together through the year. Last week it was to celebrate our friend Catrin’s birthday and our dear pal Leasa kindly hosted us for lunch at her home. Getting together at someone’s home is just such a treat and really a lot more relaxed than the restaurant thing I think.

I was looking forward to seeing her house, as it was decorated with the theme, “Christmas in Paris.”

It did not disappoint!

Leasa you may remember from my post here about her wonderful Easter lunch she hosted for us earlier this year.

There was so much pretty, I didn’t know where to look first.

I love Leasa’s home and especially her dining room.

Catrin, (in the stripes) is Swedish and you may also remember her lovely Swedish-California Christmas home style from this post.

Leasa, here in her kitchen, is one of those who is just an effortless entertainer. You automatically feel at home at her house and she serves simple, but delicious food. This time we had quiches, salads and some wonderful desserts bought for Catrin.

She has given every spot in her house a little holiday flair.. She changes up her pedestal piece all the time. I love her use of silver- old and new, candles, pine comes and poinsettias here.

George, her Springer Spaniel keeps watch over the main room.

Leasa has two darling young girls. We spied the Elf on the Shelf getting in some trouble with the Smurfs. 🙂

The table was amazing!

Each of us received a sparkly Eiffel Tower ornament on our place setting to take home!

Leasa used a mix of her grandmother’s  flowered china and some newer plates, crystal and etched glasses. The combination was lovely.

The layering of all the French inspired items, faux fur as snow, mercury glass, silver, feathers, vintage ornaments and a bit of pink made it fun and girly.

We spent a lot of time oooing and ahhhing over all the details!

She also decorated the small portals to the dining room.

How cute is this grouping on the buffet? Leasa’s glass lamps are so lovely too and match her chandelier.

She didn’t forget to give her entry a little Parisian touch with pillows…

…And a feather wreath.

Even her landing to the stairs was festive.

I have to admit I have serious powder room envy! Love her Noel here and her bamboo shelf is to die for!

Okay one more detail I have to gush about is her butler’s pantry. Such a brilliant idea between the kitchen and the dining room. Who couldn’t use that? Leas’s holds a wine cooler, her bar ware and a beautiful nickel sink and more storage.

Catrin petting George, who wanted some birthday cake!

As lovely as Leasa’s home is, it’s a cozy spot where dogs and kids are adored and made at home.
I love that about her. She has her priorities straight you know?

No wonder we have so much fun.

The time spent with good friends always goes too fast.

Wishing you a lovely holiday with those you love.

Thanks my friends for all the wonderful visits and comments all year.

I am truly thankful for all of you!

Merry Christmas!

Kim

Leasa also enlisted help of her friend Kimber Feece, who does styling.
Her business is Inspired by You and you can click on the name to contact her.

Merry Christmas!

December 25, 2012 By kimwheeler No Comments

Hello friends. I know I’ve been gone for a bit and I feel I’ve really dropped the ball on blogging this month. I had so many great posts ideas, but never got a second to get them out. Things were crazy with school and Christmas and then my dear mother was in the hospital for a surgery five days last week. That took priority over everything and Christmas fell by the wayside. Thankfully, she is now home and healthy and that is the greatest gift this year. Besides that, the shooting has put a little cloud on everything this season for us all. While I’m determined to do some things to make a difference, I am trying to find those special moments with my family and friends.

I realized December has been so manic I haven’t barely enjoyed my tree…or our special keepsakes! Tomorrow, I am sitting in my living room and putting my feet up.  I will take it all in.. Like my old Father Christmas, above.

The bells made for me by my talented friend Sue..

Our Christmas photos of years gone by…I love seeing photos from Christmas’s past at others homes too.

Cherished ornaments like this otter from the Monterey Bay Aquarium bought by a little boy.

I’ll get another look at all the adorable cards we have been lucky to receive.

I just love the California snowman my youngest made at school! Get it?

We wrapped the last presents today and we delivered our bags of cookies for our neighbors.

The kid’s trees came out so cute as did their peppermint pinwheels.

Made my Christmas lasagna for tomorrow too!

While we are at it, I had to show you how darling some people decorate! Look below at my friend Sue’s kitchen table..

My friend Kim’s dining room…

And my friend Leasa’s mantel…

These women so inspire me. I love how creative each one was using found and bought objects to make their homes festive and stylish.
I’m going to take a week or so to just be with my family and get offline. Before I leave, I want to share this little gift, a wonderful show about the rituals of the season. I couldn’t imagine a Christmas without watching Rick Steves’ European Christmas. If you’re a PBS viewer, you may be familiar, as it’s played a lot this time of year. Let me tell you, it warms the heart. I know it sounds corny, but I cry at the end every time. My family is crazy about it too. Watch it with those you love. It really does bring the true meaning of Christmas in focus. It’s about the traditions and not the gifts. We could all use a little more of that and a little less black Fridays in our world in my opinion. You can see it here.

Thank you so to all the readers and fellow bloggers from California and all over the world who regularly stop by this blog. I am truly grateful for your comments and notes and just for reading and being here.

I wish you all peace, joy and happiness.
xo

It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth It’s the weekend post time again with Elizabeth and Juliet. 🧡

This weekend I shared how I spiffed up the front with a few mums from the local Ace and Trader Joe’s .. Happily, these baskets I bought last year at Target are still looking good, and are available again. I link to them on the blog.
My wreath of petrified leaves bought last fall at my local @buncheslg florist seems to have survived the garage pretty well. ( Miraculously!)

I love these multicolored mums from Trader Joe’s. I missed them last year and they go fast!

Other fun things on the blog are an inspiring home book, some great pant options for fall, and a few cottages in Carmel that are for sale!

I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly P I don’t know where I saved this from, possibly Pinterest, but I’ve had it forever. I need to remind myself this quite often!

Our mindset is everything and I was inadvertently raised to worry about things. My mom was one of 8 kids and her mother warned them about the dangers of everything to keep them all alive in her mind. I think that was seeped in my dear mom’s bones and passed onto us.. by no fault of hers.

My brain defaults to that and I have worked hard to stop that sort of internal monologue.

Remember worrying never kept anyone safer. We don’t care more about someone by being a worrier. We just need to expect good things will happen.

Being a person who is always worrying is not good for those around you either. It hurts your family and their own feelings of security. The more I realize this, the more I feel the need to reassure, not stress and trust all will work out… and might even be fantastic!

Hope you all have a Happy Friday - and trust things will work out!

I’ll be back tomorrow with the weekend post!

I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to re I have this quote in my closet! It is smart to remember we may already have what we think we need to look great.

Right now the season is changing and I - like everybody else, am super excited for fall clothes, adding new things to my closet, and refreshing my look.

Hold off though. Before we buy anything or get ‘influenced’ from people like myself, we have to first look at what we have.

I am constantly reminded that the best dressed people have less clothes and wear great pieces on repeat!

Get in your closet and you may see you already have that perfect fall sweater or the ballet flat that’s everywhere!! The truth is your pieces may be cooler than the new offerings that are out there- and no one else will have them.

Make this a goal to go to your closet before you buy for fall and I promise you’ll shop smarter and get what you really love and need.

Have a beautiful Friday!! Here’s to sweater days soon. 🍂

I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I jus I haven’t posted many house photos lately. I just realized yesterday how very much I’m enjoying being at home especially now windows wide-open and the beautiful weather. We couldn’t be more lucky here in California when the weather is as it is now. 🧡

My tomatoes finally turned red and my new fig plant that I added to the front yard in spring already has figs on it! Marlo is enjoying the sunshine and fresh air too. She’s nearly 18 years old.

Nothing better than this late summer early fall…Still the goodies of summer and the promise of fun things in fall without all the heat.

If you didn’t read my weekend post there’s a wonderful inspiring story I shared about getting together with your neighbors and creating small micro neighborhoods…. and how the French love this time of year for socializing again too.. Lots to look forward to!

Have a beautiful day.

The best part about fashion right now is there really are no rules and we just had to find what works for us and our lifestyle and our bodies!

What do you do when it’s rainy and cool in Tahoe What do you do when it’s rainy and cool in Tahoe? Well someone asked me today and actually there is a lot to do and it’s one of the best times to go!

Last weekend it was a cool 48 degrees and it felt like November even though it was Labor Day weekend. We enjoyed some sun and breezes so being layers!

You can pack a lot in the two days with great hikes and walks..and food! Two good hikes- one at Ward Creek, another at Sugar Pine Point.. are perfect for now! Have some lunch by the river @riverranchlodge, take a walk on the lake and a drive on 89, end it by playing games and have a cozy dinner in with pot pies from Tahoe House bakery. ( SO good!)

Tahoe when it’s shoulder season is the best kept secret. Though normally Labor Day would be hot here. Make some plans to enjoy the fall here! 🍂

Here’s to an early fall! I added a few autumn touches to our tiny cabin while I was there..

Yes I snapped that 🐻 bear! He was crossing the road. This is their season to bulk up so you leave no food in your cars..

I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to I can’t let this date go by without a tribute to Princess Diana, my original style idol. I recently found this book my dear mother bought me way back in the 80’s. Tucked inside was this torn page from American @vogue about this new girl’s style….Oh if they only knew what this young woman would be to the world. …

She was so much more than what she wore. She was a real life princess in her heart as well as title- touching so many lives. Who didn’t she care about or show kindness towards? She had it in her heart and that radiated in her face.

These are a few photos that are my favorites and a few that show her fun personality that always shines through.. 🩷 Of course everything she wore is back in style again like this vest - the caps, the blazers, and floral prints.

This day makes me hugely sad.
If it wasn’t for the nasty British press ( who are still horrific), and paparazzi she would be here.

The weekend post with Juliet and Elizabeth is up. The weekend post with Juliet and Elizabeth is up. I have my 40th reunion this weekend so I’ve got what to wear to a reunion, an excellent book on rethinking how we age by the chic @annagmurphy , and the story of how San Francisco’s Nordstrom changed the city and its unlikely success story.

It’s all on the blog!

Stop on by our blogs- links as always, in our bios or stories:
