Holiday Home Tour- Think Pink for Christmas

November 30, 2022 By kimwheeler 40 Comments

Welcome to the 2022 Holiday Home tour! I’m very excited to be part of Jenny Williamson’s Holiday Tour Week. Each day you’ll see festive rooms from different blogs to give you some ideas and inspiration. I’m sharing my pink Christmas tree that I put up in my den just for me!

If you came here from Postcards From the Ridge, welcome! I’m Kim and live in Northern California.

The list of blogs collaborating on this Christmas tour

I am neutral lover and my home is full of natural elements, lighter colors, and wood tones. I generally go the same way with our main tree and keep it natural and light.

Still, I have always thought pink Christmas trees were fun. One year, when I was small, my grandmother had one -and it was thrilling to me. Last year, when I took over the small space off the kitchen for my own personal den/office, I had a lightbulb moment thinking why not to get a small pink tree? I absolutely am so glad I did it. It was fun pulling it together and it gives me a little joy and I think of my grandma. She would have loved it.

Pink Christmas tree with mercury glass ornaments in a den.

As I am the only women in this family with three men, the main tree could never be all pink. I keep our family tree more traditional and natural, and will share that next week.

I found my pink tree at Homegoods last year. I found these pink mercury glass bulbs on a garland that are the perfect size when cut off the ribbon. The pink tweed ribbon I found last year on our annual Christmas trek to San Francisco at Neiman Marcus at surprisingly $27 for a huge spool. I also use a pink faux fur throw for the skirt, which sort of continues the glam fun feel of this tree.

The tree takes on a warmer pink, almost copper hue when lit that I love. I added this small oriental carpet pillow to my office chair that I had in the same tones.. I love this pink/sherbert orange mix.

Pink tree with silver stars

I had some Eiffel Tower ornaments that I added here and this star garland.

I also snuck in a little pink house from my dad’s vintage snow scene he had as a kid…

Since last year, I’ve noticed pink trees are becoming even more popular. There is a cute version here in two sizes, and here in many colors and options.

Other pretty pink Christmas items.. This wreath at Target.

soft pink burlap ribbon

I could not find the original ribbon, but this light burlap pink at Joann’s is a soft color look for a tree ribbon and Neiman’s has a beautiful hot pink taffeta ribbon – 25 yards for $39, which isn’t bad for a luxe ribbon.

These bulbs are pretty with a crackle finish and this is a pretty collection. Both good deals.

I love this copper and pink wrap and this ribbon for presents from Anthropologie.

And if you’re a pink lover , and can’t have a tree…why not have a rose colored stocking?

pink and a res patchwork stocking
pink and red knit stocking
pink caravan stocking

This patchwork one is adorable as is this one, and this Anthro woven knit version, and this Grand Caravan stocking I love too.

And if you just want a pop of pink and some sass, this pillow from Furbish is a hoot. I might need this in my den or by the front door. This quip is from Home Alone, if you don’t remember..Ha. I think we need a rewatch of that this year..

What do you think about pink Christmas decor?

Please be sure and pop by the next room on the tour, Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick, who I think you will love!

Don’t forget to visit each of the homes on the tour each day…

Happy Christmas Everyone!

December 24, 2014 By kimwheeler No Comments

I’ve been going as fast as I can this week. Got almost everything done except for a few little bits.

Here’s a little of the simpler variation I did on decorating this year.
I loved this herringbone ribbon so added that to the front room where we have white brown and some black. My bells from last year are mixed with my usual hodge podge and cuttings from outdoors.
Loved the trees in these wooden pots from Trader Joes this year. I bought one for this room.
Two more in my powder room.
I stole this idea from my friend Leasa and added some festive bits to the soap dish.
These vases now have the Starry String Lights from Restoration Hardware wound to the branches.
I also used the timed Restoration lights on the living room mantel.
(These are on sale right now and work great in summer around umbrellas!)
I wanted to keep it light and bright in that room which is darker.

The boyz helped with the tree.

I had some fun wrapping with this ribbon I found at Cost Plus. Wish I bought more.

I love adding little ornaments to a package and tags you make yourself.

I also made sure to do some shopping in town. As much as I like going online and to places like TJ Max, I know our small businesses can’t stay here if we don’t shop. I was surprised how many cute gifts I found at all prices when I spent some time in our cute Los Gatos downtown.

This bakery, Icing on the Cake, has so much besides their wonderful cookies and cakes. You will certainly get inspired by all the unique items that functional and also fun.

I love to see how friends decorate as well.

I was lucky to experience some Swedish hospitality at my friend Catrin’s house. Love the simple and elegant beauty of her home and Scandinavian holiday look and yes served saffron buns too!

My friend neighbor Kim and I made these door banners with moss.
Her version (above), came out the cutest.

She also has a great collection of cloche jars and they look charming all together.

Kim created a runner with this beautiful paper held down by gold wasabi tape at the edges. It came out quite glamorous and pretty with mercury glass, hydrangeas and poinsettias.

They had their vintage Christmas music albums out at Kim’s. I love it!
I know I have mine somewhere… Taking up garage space as my husband would say.
Another talented girl, my friend Meilei made me this darling painting that is in my entry.
So many people are crafty!
I also got this cute pig and toffee from another pal.
Then another very gifted friend Lori, made us amazing homemade toffee.

I like how she festooned it with sage from her herb garden! I still have the bunch hung by my pots and pans and it smells very good.

We squeezed in a batch of Ethel’s sugar cookies!! You know the ones from that old Betty Crocker cookie book? Today we may make more as they are gone already.

Last night an annual dinner was held by another friend. I loved Jen’s pretty table with real holly and pinecones and just a hint of sparkle.

Jen makes an amazing kale salad that I will share in a future post. It features those Meyer lemons that are coming up all over here in Northern California right now. Sunset Magazine has a whole lot on Meyers in the January issue.

I bought myself an early Christmas gift. Isn’t it hard when you are out shopping to be good?
You see so many deals on things.

So far I love this book, in the 5 minutes I have had to read, with it’s diverse, mainly California homes, especially Donna Dixon’s and Windsor Smith’s.
I will be at my parent’s for Christmas with my whole family for once and I am really excited.
I hope to do some nature hikes and more together time with our boys.
There are so many nice friends out there reading and leaving notes.
I’m grateful to you all for being here!
Happy holidays to you all!
Kim

Christmas Memories & More

December 20, 2013 By kimwheeler No Comments

I’m so excited.
School is finally over and today we head up to San Francisco with the family for some holiday fun.

Pears are good decor, no?

The past 2 weeks have been non-stop baking, shopping, Christmas card-writing, get-togethers and helping study for finals.
I loved it, but there was literally no time to blog and so much to chat about!

I’ve bedazzled the house as much as I can. I prefer less glitter more greens, but I did have my moments.
Loved our wreath from my son’s Boy Scout Troop.

Got the tree home. Wonderful having big boys who can help out.

Nutcrackers are present and accounted for.

The boys decorated the tree and it’s a bit, shall we say, slapdash?
I don’t have the heart to change it.
I’ve become a fan of good enough. Makes life a lot simpler.
That so wasn’t the mom I was 10 years ago. Cards and trees had to be just so.
The best part of getting older is you get wiser!

The preschool ornaments are out and that’s what matters. 🙂

I feel so blessed I cannot complain about any of the holiday busyness.

Added a few bits and bobs here and there…

Got my wrapping area all set a few weeks back.. Love having a space just for that.
The kids and I made these peppermint stars and wrapped them with some ivy and twine for gifts.
I discovered a new cookie recipe that was a hit and super easy too.
White Christmas Dream Drops won Sunsets best cookie in 2011. I see why. Recipe here.
They are like baby pavlovas…So addicting!
Please don’t judge my stained cookie sheets. I’m lazy and grateful for parchment…
My grandmother would never tolerate the look of them…I know they need elbow grease.
Looking through my recipe binder….
Is this a metaphor for my life and ADD or what? I’ve been collecting recipes for 17 years and this is what I have. I couldn’t find the right recipe to save my life.
I did have a wonderful time looking through it.
Then I opened my mom’s Betty Crocker Cookie book and jumped down that rabbit hole. What a trip. I loved this book as a kid and spent hours dreaming of making the wonderful creations.
Each page and it’s drawings are imprinted on my brain. Seriously.
I see now why my mom said no to some of the cookies I wanted to make.
These bells look like a ton of work..
We did make chocolate chip cookies so many times I never need a recipe.
We also made Ethel’s sugar cookies. I always wanted to make Mary’s instead.
I liked the name Mary a lot better than Ethel.
Mary’s were made with confectioner’s sugar, which I have never tried.
Ethel’s are  just so good though.
Anyway, I started having holiday flashbacks..Christmas songs will do that to me.
I love so many, my personal playlist has 90, but there are tons of great new songs too.
One of the clearest Christmas memories I have must have been around 1973. My grandmother came by during Christmas break and brought us a record player for my brother and I.
It was one of those housed in a suitcase like box with the speakers built in.  She also brought us two new Christmas albums.
When I think of it now, that was a fun Christmas thing for her to do.
I received this one:
That’s why I know every word on this. Wonderful collection of songs too.
Even if you are not an Elvis fan, you will love his renditions on here.
My brother Peter got this:

He ran upset to his room. I get why.
Sorry, Elvis always trumps Perry in the cool department…
And what can I say? I was a girl and older, of course Elvis should have gone to me!
I cannot help loving many of Elvis’s versions like his White Christmas and Why Can’t Every Day Be Like Christmas? That one really gets to me.
Kinda  nerdy ha?
Today, my favorites are John Lennon’s Happy Christmas and Sinatra’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Elton John’s Step Into Christmas, Sting’s Gabriel’s Message, and The Carpenter’s There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays.
My kids love the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack with the Vince Guaraldi Trio. All these just get better over time.. Oh also like the Celtic Christmas station on Pandora.
I try not to listen until 2 weeks before. Then I make everyone sick by playing my favorites and any Christmas station non-stop.
So if you are still reading…:D, what traditions and songs are you looking forward to?
Something about the holidays makes so many memories flood back to me.
Love that.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday and or break wherever you are in the world!
Kim

Still have my rain boots out, as more rain is comi Still have my rain boots out, as more rain is coming next Tuesday, but the sun is shining and it’s a Friday! ☀️( What is it about Tuesdays this year?)

I bought some tulips for myself at Trader Joe’s last night and looking forward to a day out in SF on Saturday for Max’s birthday, which is today.❤️

More on The Weekend blog tomorrow -and Juliet @makemineaspritzer and I did a LIVE yesterday which is up on her Reels page if you missed it.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts on the gun problem in this nation. Both Juliet and I am just sick about it.
I don’t plan to shut up about it until we get some change. Our kids don’t need to live this way..
Being quiet about it isn’t helping us. So many, many good people out yesterday calling for action and demanding change and it’s giving me hope. ❤️

This Sunday there is a @momsdemand meeting nearby and if you are local I can send you the link. Leave me a comment below. I am going with my husband and anyone who wants can join. I’ll share it on stories too. 💪🏻

I did a little field trip and braved the heavy rain yesterday with my friend Elaine to visit the new @westelm in Campbell. It’s nice having a home store you can drive up to and park nearby. I bought a few new glasses for my shelves and a pretty decanter. Will share more about this new shop on my stories.

Stay cozy today. ☔️

Here we are again. More families destroyed by the Here we are again. More families destroyed by the inability of our nation to take a stand against the gun lobby, manufacturers and politicians supporting them. Little children and their teachers gone. I don’t want to hear about freedoms.. Those are faux freedoms gun culture enables.

What about the freedom to go to school and feel safe without being gunned down? The freedom to go to the grocery store, the movies, a festival or a concert, a nightclub without fear of being killed? We all are in danger in all places. States with strong gun laws are at the mercy of the states with the weakest laws, as we have no walls between us.

We don’t need to live this way. We just need to get together and stop the madness. NO OTHER first world nation lives lives this way with guns and weapons meant for war, easily had by anyone who wants them. People are afraid to vacation here. It’s only a matter of time before every one of us is touched by this unrestricted gun culture. Let’s stop being complacent. We must absolutely demand our politicians use their power to change this. The Tennessee Representative for this district sent out a holiday card with his family holding automatic weapons…like it’s some kind of joke. These are children’s lives. And what about those who are left behind losing a loved one or experiencing this horror and surviving?

This photo from @shannonrwatts - please follow her. This is a child today being brought to a reunification center for parents awaiting news. ☹️

I know some of you only want happy posts, but can we agree we aren’t doing enough here and we all need to take part?

Call and donate to your local politicians who take a stand on gun control. Know where all of them stand on guns and share it. If you can, donate to those in other states who are fighting the good fight and need the support. ❤️

I love this country and I really want change.

Well after all this weather, and so much indoor ti Well after all this weather, and so much indoor time, I’m officially sick of everything and I am ready to give the home a little refresh. Homegoods and TJMaxx have some great spring items and a promotion with items from France, Italy, etc. They can be a good source for outdoor pots, new pillows, rugs and decorative bits. It’s good time to find a ‘few’ emphasis on few, new things for the home. They carry unique items, many one offs, but you have to be a discerning shopper.. What to look for and what to avoid on this little clip.

I’ll be taking more about how to shop smart at these sort of places on the upcoming blog as well. What’s been your experience at these stores? I have had good luck and bad and I think you have to be smart about what you choose and don’t fill a home with these things.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on shopping there. More tips from my last trip there on stories and saved on shopping tips.

I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room today as my builder @mikemccloudconstruction shared it too. I still love the way it came out! I had saved many inspiration pictures of how I wanted this to look. I was lucky Mike helped me make this happen. A good builder who listens and has ideas as well, helps so much. I’m sharing some of the extra details up close.

I loved this blue sort of organic watery tile for a pool bath. I also knew I wanted an open shelf for all the pool towels so people could grab them on the way out the door. The @serenaandlily mirror definitely has that nautical almost porthole, sort of look and picked up the unfinished oak color. I used an RH pendant light and the sink is Victoria and Albert. The counter is from a slab of @vadaraquartz that I spilt and used in the laundry as well as the boy’s bath. I choose an inexpensive cement tile for this space and the connecting laundry/mud room which works with drippy pool feet! It’s been almost four years and all still looking great!

DM me if anyone wants details I left out! I thought I did a post on this, but maybe not! I need to do that with all the baths.

Hope you all have a good week and get some nature in the first day of spring!
