Weekend Meanderings- Travel Edition!

July 22, 2022 By kimwheeler 25 Comments

It’s time for our Weekend Meanderings with Elizabeth and Juliet. I hope your week has been good. This weekend I am away at the Haven Conference , so I thought this would be a good time to share all my best travel themed posts..

First I want to share a beautiful book Resort Fashion, that was a gift from my friend Erin who loves travel too. It’s vintage from 2007, but a wonderful book filled with gorgeous photography from Toni Frissel, Louise Dahl-Wolfe and others. There are sections on stripes, all white and color, and other themes and it’s probably one of the loveliest photography books I’ve ever had… You can still find it on this link and here.

This is my most popular post ever, What to pack for Carmel and Monterey. I try and update it every few months.

This was the last Signature Style on Travel, and what to pack and how to do it.

This edition of weekend Meanderings had what I pack for Hawaii..

This post was How to Bring a Hawaiian Vibe to Your Home..

This was one of my all time favorite posts –Traveling Abroad With Children .. I think it’s a wonderful idea. We did it and loved it. Some of my tips and photos of the trips we have done over the years with my sons in Europe are on this and I’m so glad we started them out traveling young. Grif below in London!

This was my post on our 25th Wedding Anniversary trip to Bora Bora …

And lastly, written right before the pandemic, A Week in London. London is my most favorite city in the world!

I’ll be back to my usual weekend posts next week… Please stop by Elizabeth and Juliet’s blogs and see what’s on their minds this week..

Signature Style- Resort Wear and What to Pack for Hawaii

June 10, 2021 By kimwheeler 20 Comments

Hello it’s that fun time where I get to join up with the stylish Cindy Hattersley and Sarah London for a Signature Style Post. This month we are talking resort wear.. and just in time as we in the states are finally beginning to safely venture out a bit for summer vacations. As I write this, we just came back from our first holiday in a year and a half with the family in Hawaii. I have a lot to share, but hope you’ll find some of it helpful!

In Hawaii, resort wear is extremely casual, and even in the nicest resorts, I’ve never worn a heeled sandal. The best part about a Hawaiian vacation is the ease. I spend most days in a swimsuit, with air-dried hair, and rarely put on makeup except a little lipgloss and mascara to go to dinner. I find I always pack too much for Hawaii. When I’m there I never want to fuss with jewelry, heels and blowdryers.

Enjoying a mango ice tea on my first day in Hawaii.

To avoid overpacking I remember a little tip from my mother. She would always say buy a few new things before you leave and you won’t mind repeating them on the trip. You should bring things that can do double duty like a dress as a coverup and silky shorts that you can dress up or wear with a tank for daytime. Pack shoes that work for more than one outfit and wear your heavy ones, like sneakers on the plane. I know there are those people flying in long dresses and flip-flops, but they just look dumb when the plane temp goes arctic. I wear layers and strip some off when I land.

Most importantly-you need a swimsuit that fits and feels good on. If you are struggling with this as most of us, read my recent post on bathing suits and body image for some inspiration and good choices. I noticed on this trip, a lot of women choosing the new one-shoulder look and it’s flattering for so many body types. It looks good on the curvy gals as well as those with leaner proportions. J. Crew is hands down my favorite retailer for quality, choice and fit. This is the suit I wore the whole Hawaii trip..

They also have these other pretty one shoulder options. Summersalt also has a popular one that comes in more sizes and color variations.

Another look that is chic and I saw all over Hawaii, is the long sleeve top with a bikini bottom. This is usually a rash guard own top, often with UPF built in. This look is appealing and for someone like me who can find a good bikini bottom, but not a supportive bikini top I like, you can wear comfy sport bra under the rash guard for more support. This look is stylish and is smart as we get so much sun damage on areas like the back and shoulders.

Everything But Water has this cute look in white and black..

There are also choice by Cover, below, in the scalloped top or a bit longer top in regular – also in black and white. They sell the hipster bikini bottoms too. Everything by this great line, including skirts, full suits and leggings have UPF 50 here. Also more on their own website. All Cover items are made in California! I love that. Do you know a recent study showed that 50% of all UVA exposure occurs in the shade, so your the beach umbrella isn’t enough.

I love the look paired with a hat. I just bought this straw hat from Banana and they have a similar one now..

My favorite coverups are always the white ones and I always find new ones while traveling. A few pictures of me in coverups last week.. one with my oldest Jackson.. I think I have too many, but I love them and use them as tops if they are short and dresses if they are longer.

Other white coverups are this cutie by Tommy Bahama. It can also double as an out to dinner dress.

This Melissa Odabash coverup is in many colors and so feminine.

I also really like this gauze offering at Anthropologie in a few colors..

So what else to pack? Well, this year it’s all about the new longer and more feminine shorts! I needed some so bought a few new ones for this vacation. They seem to be a fresh look and I loved the dressy versions out now. I like that packing them meant I could have options for daytime treks and also evenings too. I added three pairs this year to my closet.

Banana Republic has a new look and I found two beautiful made pairs there- this linen blend short in a fresh yellow.. Sorry for the wrinkles on my flat lay, but they are linen, and even the store display shows them like that. If you love linen you have to get past the wrinkles. (People in Europe don’t even iron their linen, just smooth it and flat dry. It’s bad for the fibers to iron and starch.)

The black ruffled top is a new versatile tank I love from Cinq a Sept. It is so popular and such a flattering staple, they carry it year round at Neiman’s. It was a bit of a splurge, but my friend Jeanne wears hers all the time and it’s even lovelier in person with a side stripe of grosgrain. It’s beautifully made, light and doesn’t wrinkle. I also wore it on the plane on the way over. The scalloped sweatshirt is by Frame and my Perry Bombe cross-body bag by Tory Burch I take on all my trips. The ribbon espadrille slides (above) are Tory Burch. Black sandals are a few seasons past, but something similar here.

I also bought these Banana Republic Flyweight shorts (above and below),made of recycled materials. They are travel perfect as they don’t wrinkle, are temperature regulating and have UPF 50! I wore them on a hot day out to do some sightseeing and also dressed them up with the tank at night with some pretty necklaces and sandals. ( love the necklaces from Ippolita)

While in Hawaii this Twin Palms raw edge linen jacket caught my eye at Tommy Bahama. I have needed a light jacket and I wore it with the some my new higher waist shorts and a soft linen tank I’m in love with on the plane ride back. The Leaf Jacquard Scarf was a find at Tommy B’s when I was buying the jacket and it was great for a wrap in the evening as well as warmth on the plane. (Can you tell I hate being cold?) I loved the Hawaiian vibe of the scarf too.

Paige jean shorts and Tory comfy Miller Cloud sandals.

During this trip I discovered Tommy Bahama. It’s not usually on my radar, as we don’t have one near me. They have some very cute summer dresses in linen if you want a resort ready dress. Don’t forget about them as a great vacation resource. We went to their fun restaurant on the Big Island and the shop is right below it.

This darling ruffled linen Tommy Bahama dress comes in 7 colors and is the softest linen. I also loved the look and feel of this linen blend dress in 11 colors which can go off the shoulders or not.

Their Raffia tote can go from the beach to evenings out.

A resort look that was new for me was a pair of fun track pants from Anthro and a strapless top. This is a modern evening look and I will use the pants so much with white t’s etc. ( They also come in a cute tan and navy.) The strapless tube top was a little out of my normal comfort zone, but I thought why not? The top warranted a pant or something longer for evening dinner out to me. They were long for me, but they were cuffed when I bought them and I left them like that. This tube top matched the bees on the pants perfectly. I added longer earrings and a woven clutch I’ve owned forever. The tube top comes in a lot of fun colors and can be a great look under a white blazer.

Not the best pic, but the guys weren’t into waiting for photos on vacation.

Another fun and flattering look on most everyone for the vacation bound is a one shoulder top. I have this Isabelle Marant I wore on this trip and always take it on holidays.

It’s no longer available, but Rails has a darling white version with a puff sleeve I want and the cutest paper bag shorts. I love this look! I think a one shouldered top is made for resort wear- daytime or nights out. A lot of people wonder if you need a strapless bra with these one shoulder tops. So far I’ve just worn a regular bra and tucked the strap for the other in the bra band.. It works.

I wore slides most of the time in Hawaii and packed my favorite leather sneakers for the plane. I just love these trainers from Banana that are light and comfy and sporty cute.

Other sandals that are resort worthy.. Can you tell I love the new modern look of these comfy slides? I couldn’t choose so I just put them all on here.

These Seychelles Puffy Woven Slides in a zillion colors, Seychelles Low Key Slides, Kaanas Patterned Slides, Vince Sueded Buckle Espadrille, Silent D Woven Slide (in black and khaki), Beek Pigeon Slides, The Day Crossover Sandal from Everlane, The Dayna Lugsole Slide Sandal from Madewell, Pacific Leather Thong ( 3 colors) from J.Crew, Frances Valentine Gardenia Sandal, Tory Burch Miller Cloud in Spark, Tory Rope Slides.

I hope there is a vacation or a holiday you are planning in your future. I’ll share some more of my Big Island getaway soon.

Now please stop over to Cindy Hattersley and Sarah London’s wonderful blogs to see what they have for you in resort wear ideas for your vacation plans!

Happy Summer!

Getaways -The Mauna Lani Hotel in The Big Island

February 25, 2016 By kimwheeler 15 Comments

Last week it was winter break for our kids at school and we decided to make a trek to one of my favorite spots on the planet, The Big Island of Hawaii. Regular readers of this blog know how much I love this place and it’s beauty. In fact I had to control myself from over Instagramming while I was there. There’s just so much gorgeousness. I’ve been to Hawaii in June (our usual time) and in April for Easter, and this was our first time in February. Even thought it was high season by their standards, it never feels crowded in the Big Island or where we love to stay, The Mauna Lani.

What keeps bringing us back to The Mauna Lani is the serene and understated elegance that just seems to permeate the whole resort. It’s modern and pretty, but has an old school Hawaiian vibe about it. To me that means wonderful Big Island people- the same employees have there since my boys were small and remember us, though it’s often years between visits.

It also shows in their huge commitment to historic preservation of the Hawaii culture as the 30 ocean-front acres are set amid historic Hawaiian fishing ponds.  A cultural center where you can learn ukulele or weave a pretty basket, as well as an historic cottage for storytelling and music makes you feel part of true Hawaii and not a big hotel’s phony version of it.

The minute I walk through the entrance there is ukulele music gently wafting on air and the smell of tropical flowers hits me. I’m relaxed before I can even think about it!

Right before I left on this trip coincidentally I was contacted by the Mauna Lani to share about special rates they have beginning March 1. When they heard I was traveling there they invited me to experience dinner with my family at the legendary Canoe House with their newest Chef de Cuisine. Who could refuse? So today I’ll share all the good things about this hidden gem of a resort. Just don’t tell too many people! I want it to stay that way.

First thing in the morning, my favorite thing is to grab some Kona coffee or a coconut latte at the Mountain Thunder Roasting Company in the lobby and then take an early morning beach walk with my husband while the kids sleep in.  This is the northern facing beach on the property near the bungalows and has the best turtle sighting and is a pretty walk or jog. There’s a path to the Fairmont Orchid which is about a ten minute walk along the beach here. You can also take a one of the beach cruiser bikes over there and have  lunch or to the Mauna Lani Shops and restaurants which are about a five minute drive or ten minutes by bike.

After that we usually have buffet breakfast overlooking the fishponds and beach. Love this outdoor seat to all the birds and flowers. It’s a wonderful way to begin the day.

Since there are two beaches we sometimes walk through the historic fishponds. On this day we came across someone playing guitar. It’s such a inspiring spot.
On this side of the resort, there is fantastic snorkeling in a secluded cove and Mauna Lani Sea Adventures where you can rent standup paddle boards, kayaks, canoes, surf or learn to scuba, take a night dive or a catamaran sail. My guys were loving the snorkeling and saw so many beautiful fish. They spent a lot of time standup paddle boarding too.
The beach here also has a little restaurant if you want lunch with a view

We loved the little cat who has a special spot to nap at the lifeguard station here!

After lunch we like to go back to the pool at the hotel which is very large and never feels crowded. We have never once felt the need to save a chair at the pool or the beach and I was happy that it was the same during the busier high season in February. Everyone loves the afternoon popsicles they hand out at the pool!
There are also 3 jacuzzis- one for the small ones with little spurting fountains. There’s the Ocean Grill here too which serves cocktails, lunch, dinner and snacks from 11- 8:30. The view cannot be beat and it’s a perfect place to watch the sunset.

I also am partial to the front beach of the resort as it has beautiful trees, hammocks and cabanas to duck into and read or watch sailboats float by. There’s a nice reef here for beginning snorkelers and paddle boarders. It’s also where the green turtles or Honu like to sun themselves. You have to be careful not to step on one as they sometimes blend in with the lava rocks!

This little point is probably my favorite spot…

Great tide pooling out here as well. The boys love it.
This to me is the most paradise part of the resort and the most relaxing!
My youngest just couldn’t get enough of the hammocks.
The view from our ocean front corner room was wonderful too.
I see why some people never left their rooms!
Most evenings there is live hula and music in the hotel’s center.
Our last two nights were the best. First, we had dinner at The Canoe House which is located right on the properties oceanfront and is all about fresh and sustainable ingredients. Chef Alan Nagun is the new Chef de Cuisine and focuses on using the farm to table as his suppliers are all nearby small farmers. He himself is a Big Island native as are many of the longtime team here and they work together so well to showcase the best of food, drink and a dining experience you won’t forget.
Our view from the table right before sunset of the torch lighter.

I think this picture says it all. Probably the prettiest sunset and view we’ve ever had at dinner!

Cocktails did not disappoint! I love a flower in my drink. They have many house specialty drinks and a terrific wine list. David Morimoto the manager, has worked in Napa and has brought his knowledge of wines to the table so to speak here.

It was hard to choose what to order.

Everyone takes photos at sunset and on the bridge into the restaurant as it’s exquisitely picturesque.

Max had the wok tossed lobster, a new creation by the chef and it was AMAZING! I want to have it again. Yes I ate some of his..Okay a lot of his!

I had the macadamia encrusted mahi mahi. Was wonderful with pineapple relish.

I can’t eat enough macadamia items when I’m in Hawaii.

My boys had filet mignon and were in heaven.

Desserts were pretty as well as yummy with a kit kat bar like creation that we all wanted more of and a bread pudding to die for!
There was even a special pineapple drink too! Max ordered it and I just posed with it. I think I had the perfect Hawaiian dinner ensemble with my Trina Turk fringed short outfit and my grandma’s vintage coral color beads which I think were from a Hawaiian trip in the late 1960’s she took.
If you plan to go to The Canoe House, make a reservation as this is a very popular destination for visitors from all over the island. There’s live slack guitar music every night and there is also a special Captain’s Table where chef Alan offers a blind tasting menu Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. He uses 85% of Big Island ingredients paired with his personal wine choices!  The restaurant is closed on Sundays. I think this is probably one of those experiences you want to savor at the end of your trip as it’s an evening you’ll remember for a long time. I know we did.
As if The Canoe House wasn’t enough, we were fortunate that our last night coincided with Twilight at Kalahuipua’a, Talk Story Under a Full Moon- the Mauna Lani’s evening of storytelling and entertainment held monthly on the Saturday closest to the full moon rise at the Eva Parker Woods cottage lawn. Historian Danny Akaka shares Hawaiian legends and lore and there is a musical guest. Everyone brings a chair or a blanket and some even had dinner and settle in for a night under the moon. This particular night we were so lucky as the guest was none other than Jake Shimabukuro, who is one of the most famous and innovative ukulele players in the world. We had no idea how talented he was. He plays the ukulele unlike you’ve ever heard it before from celtic music to Jackson Five and even Queen along with Hawaiian songs.
Right after Jake began playing people were oohing and suddenly the whole audience saw that whales were going crazy flipping and splashing not far off the beach. There were several of them and they wouldn’t stop. At one point Jake jokingly said he’d just play background music as we were all mesmerized. The evening could not have been more magical. I highly recommend going to this special night if you are at the resort during the full moon Saturday. You’ll never forget the stories, fun and maybe you’ll see whales too. Pretty romantic!
One more thing I learned about the Mauna Lani and have to pass along.. They are a Green Resort and generate the most solar power of any resort in the world and were named top Eco-Friendly Beach Resort by Conde’ Nast Traveler. They received an award from Golf Magazine as one of the ten Golf resorts that were leaders in environmental stewardship. Love that! They also have a turtle program where they raise them from babies and set them free on July 4 each year. If you happen to be in The Big Island, that is the day they swim them out to sea and help educate the public about these beautiful creatures. How cool to do that! It’s on my list.
Click on this link to the resort where they have a beautiful video playing that really shows the whole expanse of this beautiful property.

Next up on the blog, I’ll share my other favorite spot on the Big Island..It was hard to leave the resort, but we did make it out to some cool places.  Then I’ll tell you what to pack and what to bring home from a Big Island getaway.

Thanks for coming along!

Kim

The weekend post is up with chat about the trendin The weekend post is up with chat about the trending colors for 2023 in home decor and fashion.. Did you love the 80’s? If so this is perhaps a more sophisticated version with sherbet tones and bits of magenta, greens and navy. Here I added a bit of these Easter tones to the coffee table with a grass cloth box, one of my books and a candle. I think the best way to update things is to add touches to the home and closet that appeal to you and mix them in with neutrals..
What do you think of these colors? I think they’re fun. Some clothing pieces bring me back to my Esprit loving days. It could be fun to add a shirt, shoe or bag in these tones and I selected a handful to consider..

I have to share a snippet of just some of the wisd I have to share a snippet of just some of the wisdom that was Martin Luther King. He will always be one of my biggest heroes and ten years ago I wrote a small post highlighting some of his very meaningful words and quotes that we could all use as a life guide. Link to the post in my bio and more on my stories.

Do you know he is the only American to have a holiday for him that hasn’t been a president? He also had a low approval rating when he died. That has changed. Now people around the world use his teachings of living in peace and the fight for justice as a model we can strive for. I find his words so very needed in a world that is polarized more than ever. ❤️
