Pantry Perfection – 10 Bloggers Show You How

January 23, 2020 By kimwheeler 23 Comments

Isn’t this a timely post? When I was asked back in December to join this great group I was excited as I knew it would force me to organize in the new year. Nothing gets you to pull things together like others seeing your space, so I spent the last week thinking hard about how I use this -what I need it for and where I was just wasting space. I feel a lot more streamlined now and excited about this area.

I am sharing a utility room, not a pantry per se, but more a laundry, mud and all around place for everything we need to run the household. I feel fortunate to have this space and have tried to make good use of it on the remodel. It was one of my favorite parts that came with the original house. I did a previous post on the renovation of it here. Today I’ll show you what it holds and how I decided to organize it.

Previously this space was connected to the kitchen and held extra serving pieces and also dry goods. Now that the kitchen is moved to the center of the house, it freed up a lot of space. I wanted to use it wisely. My cute step stool is from Serena & Lily and we love it. Super sturdy and useful.

I have the usual laundry pullout which is the tall drawer, a cut out for our cat box and some deep drawers. I always wanted a designated wrapping spot and I love having counter (material is Vadara, a quartz,) to work on, so I stocked the deep drawer right below it with tape, pens, tags and all that. My house paper and some black wrap are all I really use and also plain bags. I did a little video about how everyone should have a house wrap on Instagram here before the holidays.

After the holidays, and a lot of wrapping, I reorganized and restocked. This drawer holds cords and ribbon, cards, tags, pens, tapes, hole punches and various scissors. A little shopping bag keeps all the ribbon I save and reuse. Everything I need is here. I love using cord and also making my own tags and this plain woven twine and black wrap is something you can get together here.

The lower deep drawer is for more house wrap and gifts. I keep a few on hand for impromptu girlfriend birthdays when I see something cute.

Above this I use the three shelves for entertaining. I do not have a china cabinet, and as I took out most of my upper cabinets in the kitchen, I needed this for things used occasionally. My holiday pieces are in the island and can be accessed behind the barstools, but these are things I use more often like tablecloths, votives and vases. I also keep extra bottles of hand soap and guest towels for when we have people over- to pretty up the bathrooms.

This basket is holding my extra textiles I use for runners and impromptu tablecloths, and also pillow covers. Some of the things are just fabric remnants I kept from my grandma’s home and others fabrics I just adore. My latest is a handmade Hawaiian sarong from my Big Island trip that I plan to use as a table covering come summer. Isn’t it cool?

I like having the vases, here not hidden under the sink and also the votives, and battery and beeswax tea lights. Everything I need to entertain is really in one place now and it simplifies it.

The laundry has some cool fabric baskets on the floating shelf, that just look great and is also where I keep some extra towel storage. Similar basket here. The little basket is for napkins and dish towels. We use cloth only, so I do a load of napkins once or twice a week. I scored with these Tommy Bahama grey baskets. They are sturdy and go with the tones in the house. I am unable to find them anywhere on the web for you all, but Homegoods has a few here and there. In the search for the cloth baskets I found a one-woman textile studio making beautiful woven basketscalled Woven Grey. Check out her Instagram too. Her things are beautiful. Her name is Kathleen and her studio is in Oakland! I think I have to order a few for the home. Made in California and I love supporting local artisans.

I am still loving my Electrolux washer and dryer two years on.

I keep this laundry basket on the counter when it’s not in use for clean, folded items.

The two drawers under the seat are for shoes. As my husband and I are the only one to use them, we have them for ourselves. The boys tend to come in the front door and their shoes go in a big basket when they can be bothered!! Baskets on the shelves hold baseball hats and gloves.

I just switched to one of my Trina Turk pillows that matched the floor tiles and the whole area. I still need hooks to hang coats and bags here.

My drawer has my most used shoes, my cross-body, umbrella, stocking cap, baseball hat and shopping bag. These are all the things I need to grab on the way out the door.

Lastly the two small drawers, above the cat box opening, hold extra keys, batteries, rubber bands, flashlights and other junk drawer usuals.

Thank you for letting me share my little space with you. I can’t wait to get some ideas on making my food pantry pretty too as it needs a reboot just about now! Pop over to these lovely blogs and see what they are doing in the new year in their pantries.

House Update & Spring Finds

March 28, 2019 By kimwheeler 19 Comments

On the main street by my house!

Hey friends how’s spring in your neck of the woods? Hmm, I feel like I’ve talked a lot about the weather this year haven’t I? Finally, we had some gorgeous weather last week with flowers and California poppies blooming everywhere. It was in the 70’s and I even got my sandals out, but here we are again back to the wet and cold! What the heck? I have booties and my anorak with my eyelet blouse on today because I refuse to go back to winter. I’m doing some spring here dammit. This is California!

Finally the house remodel seems to be making progress. I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Only problem now is a lot of the pressure rests on me to make choices and be firm about them, not always my strength. I have been obsessing on lights the last week or so. We chose all the outdoor ones and next came the main rooms (see the previous post), and now the bathrooms- the lights and mirror thing. I knew tile was going to a lot of choices, but I hadn’t given lights etc that much thought- thus my descent into mirror and lighting madness in the past week. After researching all the options on the planet, (seriously), I went with Restoration Hardware for most of the lights which seem to be very affordable for the quality, given what is out there. RH mirrors are also fab though very expensive and so I am still figuring that out. I’m not spending $1,000 or more per mirror.

One of the issues with my bathrooms is that they don’t have enough room for side lighting and a mirror over both sinks. A serious bummer as that is the most flattering light. Anyhow, after getting over that I found some options to the usual strip lighting that is over the top of mirrors and can look dated. A more contemporary option, like above, is a sconce that is hung slightly over the mirror- or a hanging pendant. For the boy’s bath I chose a RH hanging pendant that is pretty cool. That will work for them as they don’t need serious lighting like I do. You people over 45 know what I mean..

RH’s Utilitaire Pendant.
This cool wood Kieran Walnut Mirror is a Lamp’s Plus find.

I like their pendants with these mirrors or a black steel rimmed one..Still deciding.

For our bath, I want a simple rectangle mirror with a gold or silver border. The fixtures in there are polished nickel and for lighting above the mirror, I love this double sconce for its wrench detail which is a different version of the boy’s pendants. This comes in nickel or a burnished brass, both pretty.

I also chose a small flush mount chandelier from RH Child to give the bath a little fancy and to contrast my modern Victoria & Albert IOS tub.. Who knew RH Child had such cool stuff and more a bit more affordable. It is just the bathroom. Also, what does that say about me?? I still have little girl taste? I AM trying to stay young. 😀

Hoping it all comes together.

I’ve done so much overthinking in the past two weeks- kitchen and dining lights, cabinet styles, wood tones, and tiles. I think I actually lost weight from it all and I began having hot flashes again like 40 times a day. I sleep barely at all. Last night we had a huge storm and my cats headed to my bed with all the noise and my older cat, Hobbes decided he needed to spoon with me. GAH. Talk about sweaty. My husband asks why I don’t kick them off, but how can I? He’s so old now. Anyhow, this is why I am the definition of haggard lately…and craving every carb possible..

On that note, I did get out for a spite of retail therapy. Gosh there are so many lovely things for spring and I am ready to bust out the pretty blouses and slides and pack away the sweaters. We are planning a college tour trip with the high school junior to So Cal, so California’s weather better shape up by then! Here’s to more sun ahead and a few things on the radar I thought you might like in case you have a spring jaunt coming.

I can never have enough floral or blue and how cute is this J Crew popover blouse for Spring?

I think I may have to get a pair of these new Birks with the silver buckles and metallic blue. They also have a rose and gold version which is so cute. I love these with white jeans and casual dresses.

In the pink theme, I saw this darling bag -perfect for a holidays for evenings out or for summer days! It comes in a natural too for $69 at Nordys.

I am dying to get this beach tunic for So Cal. I would wear this with cropped jeans as well as by the pool.

While we are thinking spring break, I’d like to see how J. Crew’s reissue of this 1993 underwire suit fits. It’s a pretty plaid and it has proper coverage on the backside too. It sure looks cute here…And they have a long shirt dress to match it that can be worn as a coverup too! How chic would that be?

And check out this fun tote for travel at Anthropolgie from a Danish company.

And how about this fedora with the leopard trim band? That would be a chic vacation hat!

I’ll end with these Cora slides which are TDF!

Okay well back to reality and stay tuned -another blog post is on the way to share a gorgeous California themed book with you all. We are almost to the weekend!

Kim

The Weather and My Remodel Update

February 9, 2019 By kimwheeler 7 Comments

I’m over both the cold weather and my remodel! What is up with this dreary weather? Here in California we have had some extreme cold weather and though it’s nothing compared to the polar vortex, we even had snow this week in our town of Los Gatos, see above. So far this has been the darkest, wettest and coldest (god the wind chill!) winter I can remember in a long time. I feel like Laura Ingalls Wilder in the Long Winter.. Okay a bit of an exaggeration, but what a good book to reread about now don’t you think?

Speaking of reading I just finished the best book, A Well Behaved Woman based on the life of Alva Vanderbilt. I highly recommend it- such a good read about a woman who was ahead of her time. Inspiration and escape are really helpful during these cold months.

Two other discoveries- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which I am streaming an episode of every night and oat milk lattes from Cafe Dio in Los Gatos or Manresa Bread – the new one in Campbell has some great breakfast and lunch. I cannot believe how good they are and I think oat milk is best substitute to milk yet. Though I should be drinking water. Tennis has been cancelled so much and that is my thing. Comfort food and soups are all I want now.

I’m just about ready to be out of our rental too. The rental house is nice, but cold. I feel like the heater is running non-stop. I’m either freezing or dried out like a piece of jerky. Interior doors have swollen and do not close – and my smoke alarms have been going off because of the extreme humidity. I found black mold in one of the bathrooms. This is not normal at all here as we are usually very dry in winter! Today I woke with a sore throat and I haven’t had a cold in some years. Hopefully it’ll all be worth it for this…

Current state of affairs…

Framing is done, roof is ready to go on and windows and skylights will finally go in this week if weather permits. I’m excited for the framed Marvin windows as they are modern and thin profile. I think they will give it some architectural style to a house with otherwise simple elements.

The Home Reno Has Begun!

July 12, 2018 By kimwheeler 13 Comments

How is your summer going? We were away on vacation and last week, two days after we got home, we moved into a rental house while we renovate for the next 6 months. It had been ten years since we have moved and I had forgotten how much work there is. GAH! I’m still recovering. My son Jackson and I were saying that moving should be required for everyone every decade as it really makes you evaluate what the heck you own and are living with, you know? Moving requires you to acknowledge and touch just about every darn item you possess and even those squirreled away in a closet or garage. It’s a big wake-up call. I thought I had been good about purging in the past few years, but clearly not at all.  My family especially got on me about the amount of pillows and books I own. I love my books, but yes we will be cleaning out more before moving back. The days before the move we took 3 huge loads to donation. It made me really feel guilty about how much ‘stuff’ we acquired. We all vowed to have less.

The house in its true state in the process of packing.. Mr. Cat none too happy.

Empty and sad looking! I loved these built-ins, but they prevented me from using that space in any other way. This- our largest room, was also seldom used as it was blocked by the fireplace wall and not easy to walk into.

The narrow front room below was also the entry point to the house and our tv/family room. We squeezed into here once a couch and chair were in and never really all fit for a movie or game night.

I have shared before about the reno plan, but its actually been an almost 2 year process, where we intended to just do the kitchen, then realized how much we could actually improve the flow of the house. We figured while we were at it, why not do it and also make the whole living space work better? That also grew to include the master bedroom, which will be enlarged by taking over a fourth bedroom that is seldom used.

I bought some tulips for myself at Trader Joe’s last night and looking forward to a day out in SF on Saturday for Max’s birthday, which is today.❤️

More on The Weekend blog tomorrow -and Juliet @makemineaspritzer and I did a LIVE yesterday which is up on her Reels page if you missed it.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts on the gun problem in this nation. Both Juliet and I am just sick about it.
I don’t plan to shut up about it until we get some change. Our kids don’t need to live this way..
Being quiet about it isn’t helping us. So many, many good people out yesterday calling for action and demanding change and it’s giving me hope. ❤️

This Sunday there is a @momsdemand meeting nearby and if you are local I can send you the link. Leave me a comment below. I am going with my husband and anyone who wants can join. I’ll share it on stories too. 💪🏻

Here we are again. More families destroyed by the Here we are again. More families destroyed by the inability of our nation to take a stand against the gun lobby, manufacturers and politicians supporting them. Little children and their teachers gone. I don’t want to hear about freedoms.. Those are faux freedoms gun culture enables.

What about the freedom to go to school and feel safe without being gunned down? The freedom to go to the grocery store, the movies, a festival or a concert, a nightclub without fear of being killed? We all are in danger in all places. States with strong gun laws are at the mercy of the states with the weakest laws, as we have no walls between us.

We don’t need to live this way. We just need to get together and stop the madness. NO OTHER first world nation lives lives this way with guns and weapons meant for war, easily had by anyone who wants them. People are afraid to vacation here. It’s only a matter of time before every one of us is touched by this unrestricted gun culture. Let’s stop being complacent. We must absolutely demand our politicians use their power to change this. The Tennessee Representative for this district sent out a holiday card with his family holding automatic weapons…like it’s some kind of joke. These are children’s lives. And what about those who are left behind losing a loved one or experiencing this horror and surviving?

This photo from @shannonrwatts - please follow her. This is a child today being brought to a reunification center for parents awaiting news. ☹️

I love this country and I really want change.

Well after all this weather, and so much indoor ti Well after all this weather, and so much indoor time, I’m officially sick of everything and I am ready to give the home a little refresh. Homegoods and TJMaxx have some great spring items and a promotion with items from France, Italy, etc. They can be a good source for outdoor pots, new pillows, rugs and decorative bits. It’s good time to find a ‘few’ emphasis on few, new things for the home. They carry unique items, many one offs, but you have to be a discerning shopper.. What to look for and what to avoid on this little clip.

I’ll be taking more about how to shop smart at these sort of places on the upcoming blog as well. What’s been your experience at these stores? I have had good luck and bad and I think you have to be smart about what you choose and don’t fill a home with these things.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on shopping there. More tips from my last trip there on stories and saved on shopping tips.

I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room today as my builder @mikemccloudconstruction shared it too. I still love the way it came out! I had saved many inspiration pictures of how I wanted this to look. I was lucky Mike helped me make this happen. A good builder who listens and has ideas as well, helps so much. I’m sharing some of the extra details up close.

I loved this blue sort of organic watery tile for a pool bath. I also knew I wanted an open shelf for all the pool towels so people could grab them on the way out the door. The @serenaandlily mirror definitely has that nautical almost porthole, sort of look and picked up the unfinished oak color. I used an RH pendant light and the sink is Victoria and Albert. The counter is from a slab of @vadaraquartz that I spilt and used in the laundry as well as the boy’s bath. I choose an inexpensive cement tile for this space and the connecting laundry/mud room which works with drippy pool feet! It’s been almost four years and all still looking great!

DM me if anyone wants details I left out! I thought I did a post on this, but maybe not! I need to do that with all the baths.

Hope you all have a good week and get some nature in the first day of spring!
