Brocade Baby.. & Other Cool Holiday Fashions

November 24, 2019 By kimwheeler 6 Comments

I saw these J. Crew pants and memories came rushing to me of watching my mom getting dressed for dad’s holiday work parties! It was always a big thing to my mother and I loved when she dressed up. I noticed there are many darling vintage looks out for the holiday season and just had to squeeze a post in about it. I am crazy for these brocades, jacquards and other fabrics that are woven with gilt threads. At some point in my life, I want to wear something beautiful like this to a holiday party!

These jacquard pants are so 1968 I can’t stand it. My mom would have completed this look with her big crystal bracelet, teased hair (thank you Aqua Net),and frosted pale coral lipstick back then. Why not recreate that fun this holiday season with some of the cute offerings right now in the way of brocade, jacquards and other lovely pieces that give a retro feel to holiday looks? I feel like these are things you can keep and wear in many ways year after year for the holidays, New Year’s Eve and other times you want to kick it up a notch.

These cigarette pants are 30% off now with code BRRR. I love them with the sweater for a casual chic look and some big crystal earrings or..

…the whole look! With the gold top, it is the best holiday hostess look ever in my book..

This gold jacquard comes also in a strapless dress, and a pencil skirt.

This cherry blossom top is also ADORABLE and cute whether it’s paired with jeans and drop earrings like here..

Or with the pencil skirt plus a faux fur chubby in a wonderful color!

Something about this little coat I really love and this color spicy jade! What a great name. I’d wear this with jeans more than anything.

The pretty buckle detail of these J Crew sandals is so fun.

The satin slip skirt is back from the 90’s and it’s as flattering and versatile as ever. The J Crew version is on my list especially this adobe color…

The nice thing about these skirts is they can go from easy daytime to night with just the change of a top. The vintage burgundy color is also a great look. These have an elastic pull on waist and are so easy to wear. All the colors here.

They also make a full length version of this skirt and I love it with the turtleneck. Isn’t this a gorgeous color?

The cute retro vibe of this daisy jacquard skirt is another one you could wear so many ways. The zipper is everything.

Another pretty brocade skirt – love the colors!

This Anthro multi-colored mini is fun. You can wear it with a silk blouse to a sweater and always feel festive.

I’m in love with the flowers and colors on this maxi dress from Anthro.

Anthro also offers this swing dress with brocade accents. I love that they have a large amount of its dresses in petite to plus sizes.

Anthropolgie has some darling brocade heels like these with the cutest flowers..

I am in love with these two strap Mary Janes..

They also made them in the prettiest pink..

This navy and gold swing dress would flatter a lot of shapes.

How about this cute gold blouse that has the same 60’s vibe? I’d pair it with cropped pants and flats.

If you want to play it casual, but still look holiday, these gorgeous jacquard pants with tiniest sequins fit the bill. The pattern and color are TDF and this could go with a soft sweater or a simple white button up and big vintage earrings…SO PRETTY!

Trina Turk always does beautiful jacquard and this pant outfit does not disappoint with its graphic design. Top here and pants and there is even a matching clutch! Trina is always a great destination for holiday looks. My brocade clutch I adore and use year after year, is also from Trina.

Madewell has their own version of the gold holiday pant in their signature crop and high waist. It could be very chic with a boxy cashmere sweater.

Accessories are always the most fun part of holiday dressing!

These Jeffery Campbell slides look like something from Dynasty- love it!

They also come in a magical purple..

If you need a higher heel these Jeffery Campbell sandals are Vegas fabulous..

They also come in a lower heel and other pretty colors..

Anthro also has these velvet mini clutches with a pretty chain for $58 if you need a evening bag. It comes in many colors.

Everyone needs a good drop earring for the holidays and it is nice to have a few of these in your jewelry wardrobe. These are $48.

And these hoops , at $38 are a little more on the modern side..

Another wardrobe basic is the sexy, strappy evening sandal. These Jeffery Campbells (he is clearly killing it in the festive shoe category), come in black...

and gold of course…Make sure your pedicure is pretty with these!

Try mixing these looks with vintage costume pieces if you are lucky to have them. This is a great time to add a brooch to a shoulder of a jacket or a top.

This year the holiday season is shorter, so it helps to be thinking what you might need and if you shop early, and pull a look together, you may be able to use it for multiple occasions.

Have fun mixing it up and look to vintage photos for inspiration if it helps! I love these.

Kim

A Sneak Peek at Trina Turk Fall

October 15, 2018 By kimwheeler 10 Comments

I have always loved Back to School shopping and fall. Something about the change in the air, the crisp colorful  leaves, and the holidays coming make me excited for plaids, soft sweaters and autumn colors. It’s also that time of year when I try to add a few cool new pieces to my wardrobe, so I am excited to be part of Trina Turk’s fall shopping party next Wednesday, October 24, 10-1 in Burlingame. I especially love the fall event which comes at the perfect time for holidays and other special celebrations- and cooler weather. Yay!

I am looking forward to seeing some of you there. Suzanne Bell, my partner in this, is also a Bay Area native and a super stylist- check out her blog- Ask Suzanne Bell. Together we will help you shop and pull together looks for you and find what looks great, plus you’ll get 20% off on your purchase and the boutique will have light nibbles and some drinks while you shop. It’s always a lot of fun for everyone.

Last week Suzanne and I pre-shopped the new collection and played dress up. We spent almost 3 hours there and had a blast finding so many chic things. Below are our most loved of this collection.  I am always proud to collaborate with Trina Turk as she’s a California designer, a Northern Cal native gal like Suzanne and I, and many of her clothes are made in California. Her clothes are beautifully constructed, with elegant details and they are the kind of pieces you can collect over the years and go back to year after year and still adore. I have collected a few treasures each year and still wear all of them.  Come and see the clothes in person if you can and bring a friend and have lunch on Burlingame Avenue, one of my favorite places. Now on with the show…

Wraps and ponchos are perfect for California fall weather and we loved the two on the top blog pic, which we wore wrapped, but you can wear them down as ponchos. So versatile and cozy.

Suzanne’s was a beautiful soft deep blue and I choose the plaid with my khaki. I’m ready for my cameo on Outlander now. (Is anyone else obsessed with that show?)

Speaking of plaid let’s go with that theme for a minute…

April Update

April 16, 2018 By kimwheeler 10 Comments

Hello Friends!

Sorry I have been absent for most of this month. Things were moving along fine and life happened as it has a way of doing. I found out I needed a surgery for a fibroid at the beginning of the month. All went fine thankfully and then a week later my dear Grandma Jody passed away.

Grandma was almost 101 and so precious to me. We were lucky to spend every Thursday together. She got the flu however in December and never really walked again or ate after that. Though it was expected, it has still felt so final as I have always had her in  my life.  I never expected to have my grandmother still at age 52, and my dad still have his mother at 78. While I know were lucky, I still wish we had more time. We are planning her memorial and I think I am going to encourage everyone to wear pink, her favorite color and have pink fuchsias in the church that she loved. We have been reminiscing this week with all the stories she told about her life. More about my grandma on this post about her long life. I know a lot of you have followed my posts about her and were so kind. She loved to hear the comments.

Before all this Max and I had a four day trip to Hawaii planned. I wasn’t sure we were going to make it with everything that happened, but we did.  My youngest son Griffin was with his school music group on a trip to Spain and Jackson was back at college. It was the first time Max and I did a real vacation -not just a weekend, without the kids for almost 20 years! It was relaxing and low-key, which was just what I needed.

Some snaps from The Big Island. More about our trip on an upcoming post…

When I got back I took my dad for Moh’s surgery all day on Saturday. Fortunately he is doing okay, but what an ordeal for all the people doing it and boy seeing that will make you commit to regular sunscreen! Most of the patients were men with spots on their scalps or faces or ears, though a woman had hers on the front of her leg. It’s an all day thing and I got to know everyone else in the waiting room pretty well!

After returning from our mini-break (that’s a cute Brit word), I wanted to share about this week’s Trina Turk event in Burlingame. Last month’s had to be postponed as both Suzanne and myself were under the weather. Please come this Thursday if you live in the area. I absolutely love this beautiful boutique. Trina is my favorite California designer and I always find something special there.

During the event where you can get 20% off your items! Suzanne, who writes Ask Suzanne Bell and is so stylish and fun, and will be my partner to help anyone who wants pull together some looks for spring events or just wants to find a few things to update the spring and summer wardrobe. As I’ve said before, downtown Burlingame is my favorite little downtown to shop in the whole Bay Area. There are rows of outdoor restaurants for an alfresco lunch with a friend and a large mix of unique boutiques and shops. Last month Suzanne and I went up there to preview what is in store for spring which you can read about here. Since then they have gotten even more in store, so pop by and check out the Trina Turk website to get a look. The store though has more than the website, including some lovely shoes and bags and resort wear, so it’s worth a trip.

Hope to see some of you there. It is the most fun time.  I adore the clothes and I always like to support California girl Trina who is originally  from San Jose and designs and makes almost all her clothes in our state. Gotta love that.

Trina Turk Spring 2018

March 17, 2018 By kimwheeler 8 Comments

All of you who read this blog regularly know I am so fortunate to occasionally be asked to do an event in collaboration with California designer Trina Turk. Trina has the most lovely clothing and her beautiful modernist boutique in Burlingame is probably my most favorite spot to shop. I love the people there and I always find something unique to add to the cherished pieces of my closet. I am a bit of a collector when it comes to her things.

This coming Thursday I am honored to host a special spring shopping and styling event at the boutique in Burlingame. The time is 10:30-1, and anyone who pops in will get 20% off of all regular merchandise. I am also excited because I am doing this in conjunction with Suzanne Bell, a very stylish local blogger.

Suzanne writes AskSuzanneBell where she shares all the cool places she shops as well as great finds and terrific style ideas. I have been following her a long time on Instagram and found so many cute things thanks to her great eye. She’s also a local realtor with her husband and a mom and is a lot of fun. Come join us! We will have refreshments and Suzanne and myself will be on hand to help you find a special piece that is just right for you or for an upcoming event or holiday you may have on the calendar.

A few weeks ago Suzanne and I went up to the Trina store in Burlingame and see the latest collection. We had a ball trying things on and taking photos. One thing about the Trina store is the longer you are there, the more you find. Some things that you have to try on before you see how good they look and feel. I love that they get many many collections throughout a season, so there is always something new in store. Trina creates her own fabrics, which makes her clothes so different from many others and they are designed and mostly made in California. When you go to a Trina Turk Boutique you’ll find bags, shoes, jewelry, sunglasses, resort wear and so many other cool pieces she chooses to compliment the clothes. That is why it is an old school boutique experience to me and rare to find now a days. You have to visit even if you cannot get to our event!

Here is a just a small preview of what is now in store at Trina Turk…

Some beautiful floral silks right now with hand painted design. I am in love with these!

The Cattleya dress is even more beautiful in person. This is a stretch silk! The wrap belt was added.

A great pairing here!

Some great sandals, hats and totes for your next getaway!

The lunchbag clutches are fun.

Another great floral in the Amando dress and cool bag. A nice wedding guest look or dinner out dress.

These chambray wrap Odette pants are so comfy and the tank is darling too.

Suzanne loved this Boho dress with gold accents with gold slides.

More vacation essentials.

The Arboretum dress was perfect for Easter and upcoming holidays.

The Springey dress felt great on in silk georgette and is another great getaway dress.

Suzanne, helped by Dana the store manager looked adorable in the Tamika top and palazzo pant!

In the same fabric I loved the Bonita dress which also comes in a dark navy with this floral. This dress looks great on everyone with it’s neckline and sleeves.

I also thought Suzanne looked great in this Anissa stripe and floral dress which could go from pool to cocktails.

This Cayson dress is super casual, but stylish and would be a summer go-to for me.

Another look at the Odette pant which looked great with the Bree top which is the same as the dress above.

I also like the ease of this Kaiko dress in the snapdragon color. So easy to throw on with cute sandals or put the sleeves down and add a boot in cooler weather. It reminds me so much of a early 70s dress my mom had.

Again resort wear… They have you covered from beautifully made suits to gorgeous coverups you never want to take off

How pretty is the Seavees in Trina’s latest floral design??

Pop on over to Suzanne’s blog to see more of our shopping day and get to know her!

You can also follow the Burlingame Trina Turk Boutique on their Instagram and Trina’s own Instagram here!

Style Yourself-Make A Cool Piece Work Many Ways

January 26, 2018 By kimwheeler 32 Comments

Are you having enough fun with your clothes?? Lot’s of serious stuff in the world going on, but in an effort to lighten things I’ve tried a littler harder to add some fun and funk with my wardrobe.  I came across this cool Anthropologie sweatshirt and got so inspired I thought I’d talk about upping your style game and a adding a more pizazz to your everyday look.

Don’t we all get locked into a look at a certain age? You find what works for you, what feels good and stick with it. It’s rare to see women of my age -50s, experiment with fashion much. There are the standouts like my friend Elizabeth, who always inspires me and also Cindy who epitomizes chic. (I love their style series with stylish women too- on both of their blogs now). Yet many of us, especially in California, stick to jeans, sweaters and boots in the winter. I rarely see friends in dresses. The one effort I see across the board is usually some kind plastered nails, which looks dated to me, and a designer bag.  Rarely do they experiment with the clothes and accessories. Why not? If you try to create a lab in your closet and use all the pieces of your wardrobe you will actually buy less and look more chic.

As Gilda Radnor once said…

This would be a lot of us, especially during winter no? I myself included have been wearing a very comfy uniform of track pants and a down vest most days which feels good, but I looks sad after wearing it so much. I am dealing with a few things, one being the care of my grandma in hospice. Days have been very dark, winter has been cold. I am ready for some lightness.

My first thought about the sweatshirt above was am I too old for this? Then is it too expensive $98 for what it is- a sweatshirt? For me it was a coup de coeur or love at first sight. I knew I could wear this a million ways so the cost would be pennies per wear. I also couldn’t wait to wear it- a sure sign something is right.

So how to style it many ways? When you get a sweatshirt like this- the norm is to wear it casually, but the way to make it current is actually wear it with dressier clothes. When you wear dressy with dressy you can tend to look staid and casual with casual you can look sloppy.

To look not old, and be more current and stylish -wear high with low. Wear your diamond bracelet (if you’re lucky to have one) with elastic bands on your wrist, wear a skirt with a graphic T-shirt, wear sneakers with dressier pants and dresses, and wear heels with more distressed jeans and sweats. Try to wear faux furs, sequins, clutches, dangly earrings and other evening accoutrement peppered into your daytime look. Wear a cocktail ring during the day, and so on!. This all works if it’s done in a measured way- a little here and there, but do be adventurous. Don’t worry so much if something looks right. You just have to do it and you’ll get braver as you step out of your comfort zone. The best part is you can create your own look and you don’t need to shop a lot. Find something of quality you love and be like a European and wear it a zillion different ways with what you already own.

A few ways to style a standout piece like my sweatshirt below using some of my other favorites. Please forgive the sad camera work done by moi. I just haven’t mastered the timer cam thing. I just needed to show a few ways to style what you have, especially right now when we all revert to wearing Michelin Man looks!

The sweatshirt with my favorite Trina Turk jacket, white jeans, a cashmere sweater wrapped around the hips, tall sneakers (these are Vince grey flannel and I love them) and my grandma’s vintage ear clips in purple stones- something I’d usually only wear at night, with messy hair in a ponytail. Aren’t these the coolest earrings? Seems a shame they sit in a drawer all the time. Why not trot out fancy things in the day?

A preppy look here layered with a white button-up, flared jeans (these are McGuire from L.A.), white sneakers, tortoiseshell looking J. Crew hoop earrings and an old camel coat I’ve had for a decade.

Add a fun faux fur you have over this sporty look and you’ll have another way to wear your evening wrap you bought for the holidays. This purple number is by Sanctuary and I bought it for parties, but how cute and New York looking is this for a cold day? So much more fun than the usual.

Here it is a longer dress coat and I love that look too. The dressy coat and sneakers are exactly the kind of yin-yang I am talking about and these Stan Smith’s have been uber comfy!

This may be my favorite look- with my Trina Turk trench, distressed boyfriend jeans and suede pumps plus YSL pearl drops I have had for 35 years. I only wore these for night. How much more fun wearing them daytime and why not instead of having them languish in the drawer? I love this coat to pieces. I was waiting for it to go on sale and there are still some on their site. It’s tweed covered in a waterproof material. It has a 1960s Courreges vibe to me and I am nuts about the buttons and trim details.

I am forcing myself to wear white jeans all year long as they always look cool and this look has a horsey or equestrian vibe with a square scarf (another treasure from a friend -a LuLu Guinness silk scarf from the 90s) knotted around the neck, a camoflage jacket, tan booties and pearl earrings. I call this look retro sloane ranger ala California. What do you think?

The easiest look and likely one I will wear the most is the mix of the sweatshirt with a navy blazer, my favorite Frame jeans, these ancient wedge leopard pumps and some new hoops with tassels I bought a J.Crew. Easy!

Try hoops with a sweatshirt. I am loving this sparkly pair from J. Crew too. The tassel ones are no longer available online, but you may catch them in the clearance section at J.Crew.

Lastly, anything looks good with a trench over it and I paired it with some jeans I cut myself cuffed, and some white vintage 1970 Trifari earrings from my grandma. My usual thing would be to always wear my little diamond studs for day, but white earrings in winter is unexpected and make the wording on the top pop. Way cooler.

Love to know your thoughts? More posts like this? Are they lame? I am not a good model, but I love fashion posts and it seems better than just photographing the clothes on a flat surface, no? Keep tuned for the closet and bath, cosmetics essentials posts coming.

Anyway, Happy Friday. The days are getting longer friends. In California it is staying light at 6p.m. so it is giving me hope spring is coming soon and more flowers!!

I did a little field trip and braved the heavy rain yesterday with my friend Elaine to visit the new @westelm in Campbell. It’s nice having a home store you can drive up to and park nearby. I bought a few new glasses for my shelves and a pretty decanter. Will share more about this new shop on my stories.

What about the freedom to go to school and feel safe without being gunned down? The freedom to go to the grocery store, the movies, a festival or a concert, a nightclub without fear of being killed? We all are in danger in all places. States with strong gun laws are at the mercy of the states with the weakest laws, as we have no walls between us.

Well after all this weather, and so much indoor ti Well after all this weather, and so much indoor time, I’m officially sick of everything and I am ready to give the home a little refresh. Homegoods and TJMaxx have some great spring items and a promotion with items from France, Italy, etc. They can be a good source for outdoor pots, new pillows, rugs and decorative bits. It’s good time to find a ‘few’ emphasis on few, new things for the home. They carry unique items, many one offs, but you have to be a discerning shopper.. What to look for and what to avoid on this little clip.

I’ll be taking more about how to shop smart at these sort of places on the upcoming blog as well. What’s been your experience at these stores? I have had good luck and bad and I think you have to be smart about what you choose and don’t fill a home with these things.

I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room I thought I’d reshare our pool bath/powder room today as my builder @mikemccloudconstruction shared it too. I still love the way it came out! I had saved many inspiration pictures of how I wanted this to look. I was lucky Mike helped me make this happen. A good builder who listens and has ideas as well, helps so much. I’m sharing some of the extra details up close.

I loved this blue sort of organic watery tile for a pool bath. I also knew I wanted an open shelf for all the pool towels so people could grab them on the way out the door. The @serenaandlily mirror definitely has that nautical almost porthole, sort of look and picked up the unfinished oak color. I used an RH pendant light and the sink is Victoria and Albert. The counter is from a slab of @vadaraquartz that I spilt and used in the laundry as well as the boy’s bath. I choose an inexpensive cement tile for this space and the connecting laundry/mud room which works with drippy pool feet! It’s been almost four years and all still looking great!

DM me if anyone wants details I left out! I thought I did a post on this, but maybe not! I need to do that with all the baths.

Hope you all have a good week and get some nature in the first day of spring!

It was so good to be in the sun and and warmth -with snow capped California mountains as a backdrop. We went in the beginning part of the tournament which we always do, and got to see Andy Murray, Sabalenka, Zverev, Raducanu, and so many fantastic other players. We basically eat, slept and breathe tennis for two days straight and we loved it! You can still catch play on the @tennischannel 🎾

I will share another Reel of all the stylish people.. Something about tennis brings out the sharpest dressers and there was excellent people watching.

If you love tennis, this is a bucket list tournament. They call the fifth slam and it’s getting crazy popular so plan a year ahead of you want to go. We reserved our hotel that was walking distance a year ago. More tips on my BNP post that I update each year.

I separated the sectional and sort of like it apar I separated the sectional and sort of like it apart. This RH couch is a LOT of maintenance and can look pretty deflated after a weekend of hanging out. In hindsight, I’d buy a couch that does not require so much fluffing and cushion alternating. I snapped this pic because it was one of the times I had the pillows looking nice on it. You also need a lot of pillows to not get swallowed up by it. I call it the great white.

The local RH actually has a cleaning team that steams and fluffs their couch and I’ve seen them before the shop opens. I found it hard to get reviews on this couch before buying because RH does not have them online and if you notice they don’t do social media… so I’m just putting it out there. I will share what I love here, but I think it helps to be transparent about what is a disappointment too.
